World's most frustrating feeling: having multiple ideas and character designs but despite working on the thing for nearly 5 YEARS still being nowhere close to having a coherent plot 💀

Not knowing who the writer is in the Weird West Cabaret is so good because at first you're like "Wow this character is a really shallow and outdated racist stereotype, the writer is probably old and out-of-touch at best and straight-up racist as the worst" and then you're like "hmm this gay character could be read as problematic and predatory... but it's also possible that his story is a criticism of gay people having to repress their sexuality, and the character is so fun and camp, and whilst this might be for cheap homophobic comic relief, it could also have been written as a celebration of gay sexuality! I wonder how writer intended it..." and then you're like "OH so these people are literally trapped in this play and the writer is forcing them to act this out and wiping their memories?! That's so fucked up who would do something like that?"
And then you find out that the writers are a white gay man from the equivalent of 18th century England, and what was once a group of death-worshipping cultists who are now a mega corporation who travelled to a dimension where they weren't welcome in what can pretty easily be read as a colonisation metaphor.
And all of these people are slowly losing their humanity due to being trapped in robotic bodies.
And then you're like "Oh okay. That makes sense."

Whomst?
I've read the book three times now, but I'm never prepared for the Buffalo Bill cameo.
His appearance is abrupt:
It was up at the Wee Fleet that Buffalo Bill stuck that night in 1904. His show was touring Britain in a train of American-type stock. With it the G.&.S.W. took great pains. Two 0-6-0 engines from Ayr shed, 316 and 318, were provided, with two good men, Tom Barry on the first one and Andrew Watt on the second. These stayed with the train during its tour of Ayrshire. For the extra heavy grades south of Girvan, No. 9 from that shed, one of Smellie's 0-6-0's rebuilt with domed boiler, was turned out, and two Girvan stalwarts, Driver John McKnight and Fireman Andrew Bowman, banked them through to New Luce. The Ayr engines turned home from Stranraer. The next move was to Dumfries. The Caledonian, very scornful of those puny Sou'West engines, sent down one of their 0-8-0s from Motherwell shed, with a Motherwell driver. Andrew McKenzie of Stranraer acted as conductor. Now they were repairing the Wee Fleet viaduct at the time, and a man was stationed there to give a caution signal to all trains, as the gradient falls steeply to the viaduct in both directions. Evidently the sight of Buffalo Bill bearing down on him in the darkness was too much for the watchman's nerves, for instead of giving them a green lamp he gave a red, and stopped the procession on the viaduct. So they only got half-way up the succeeding 1 in 76 when they stuck, and had to divide their train, taking it up to Loch Skerrow in two portions. If Buffalo Bill could have seen the country in which he stuck he might well have imagined himself back in the Black Hills of Dakota.

I'm stuck at home and already in pain so I guess it's time for:
Absolute Zero Wednesday!
Last week's first episode suggested that I would get everything I expect and want from a melancholic story directed by New Siwaj, so I am going into episode 2 pretty confident.
- That little breakfast scene between the teens is adorable! "Where's your boyfriend, being so nice?/ Where is your boyfriend, being so cute?" I am not immune to young love being sappy.
- This is going to be a Hands Show and I am so, SO here for that.
- I am so happy to see that Ongsa's parents have welcomed Suansoon in their family, really. Also I knew the casting was stellar but it's always a pleasure to see Um Apasiri!! (Tom Phollawat too)
- teen!Ongsa is really far too chill with being followed like that by a whole grown man, even if I agree with him that sad adult!Soon does not look very threatening.
- on that subject, Teng Kanist's sad eyes and soft voice are incredible. I always expect excellent criers from any New's production, but I am so taken by adult!Soon and the way he exudes melancholy, it's not even funny
- Sine Inthira!! (*˘︶˘*).。.:*♡
- Ongsa's friend group seems perfectly darling, even if Ohm is risking his life a few times in there, and I am happy that we'll get to see a bit more of them.
- Ah. None of the softness could make me ignore what was to come, and the come back of the ticket situation to finish the episode was a nice and expected (if painful) thrill.
Overall, that second episode was as beautiful as the first one. The visuals are still a delight and the pacing is still working perfectly for me.
Ongsa's crush on adult!Suansoon is absolutely adorable, baby boy truly likes them soft and sad uh. The way he pretends to need tutoring right after we're being told he's good at physics?? throw me back to my 17th year lol (never had more interest and better grades in physics than the year I had a crush on the research assistant and his pink sweaters xd)
I also like how obviously Suansoon's affection for Ongsa bleeds out of him, in the way he looks at and interacts with the boy he fell in love with and who will become the man he shares his life with. He is in such a tender and painful place when he time travels: he just went through the loss of a major mentor figure in his life, and he is now losing the love of his life. I can see why he would go with the flow when given that strange opportunity to spend some more time with Ongsa, even if it's the one from ten years ago (after all, it is the same person, the same smiling and caring person he loves in his present, the one he will love in his past).
Things are going to become really serious 'time shenanigans' wise next week! Of course I read the synopsis so i have some ideas, but I can't wait to see how Suansoon is going to impact his own future and how this is going to play out for the four of them.

Me: *on a tipsy ramble trying to explain the Namek Saga to my long suffering girlfriend* So the reason they went there was to bring back everybody killed by Vegeta, most particularly Piccolo, Yamcha, Tien, and Chaotzu, but now! Piccolo is back so Kami is alive but they have to use Shenron’s wish to bring back everyone FREEZA killed, and then they have to use PORUNGA’s remaining wish to move everybody but Goku and Freeza to Earth.
Bast: okay
Me: Which means now not only are Yamcha and Tien fucked for another year, Chaotzu is probably fucked forever because Grand Elder is just gonna die again soon and VEGETA is ON EARTH threatening everyone like a dork AND—
Bast:
Me: KRILLEN IS DEAD.
Bast: Krillen is dead a lot, isn’t he.
Me: HE’S DEAD AGAIN.
Bast:
Me: SO YEAH.
Anyway there’s no punchline I just love Bast she puts up with this shit.

Elves, as Gimli had learned early in the Fellowship's travels when Legolas had devoured a cluster of baneberries to the horror of everyone except for the curious Hobbits, who had barely been stopped in time from following his example (after which everyone had been treated to a lecture on the benefits and perils of wild plants by Aragorn, the bulk of which was still burned into Gimli's brain even now) could safely eat almost anything that nature grew. Legolas had spent the next three days of their journey quizzing Aragorn on the limitations of non-elven digestion, and now considered himself something of an expert on mortal-safe foraging habits.
Bit from the next chapter of my current WIP. I need somebody who’s better at comedy than me to actually write the story behind this, because I want to read it but I don’t want to write it. Please, LotR fandom, I offer it to you freely. Someone who isn’t me write this fic, I implore you.

Ridi, oh sweetest Ridi, I finished it.
When S said those three words, I couldn’t imagine R’s heart rate in that moment.
By the by, I had to annotate every book and every album you mentioned in this work. How do you choose what books R likes best or would read?
(And yes! Ridi actually means laugh! in Italian. It’s like an imperative form. If you put Sor in front of it - SORRIDI - it means smile!)
hi omg!! thank you so much bab im so glad you liked it!! :-) also ridi...sorridi...gorgeous i LOVE that omg xx
for choosing r's books--i may have missed one here but i think the three i mention are middlemarch, a single man and crash! some of these were for more specific reasons than others--middlemarch by george eliot was picked because the line from the title the son and heir of nothing in particular, from the smiths' song how soon is now, is a reference to a line in middlemarch: “to be born the son of a middlemarch manufacturer, and inevitable heir to nothing in particular." so while that one wasnt necessarily picked for its relation to what i imagine r's tastes to be, i threw it in for a fun little reference :-) jg ballard's crash is just a pretty insane (and controversial at its time) book i feel like r would pick out of curiosity even if he doesnt end up enjoying it, and isherwood's a single man is pretty sad book about a gay man dealing with the grief of losing his partner which. well r doesnt know much about that yet but he will innit xx anyway i did not mean to ramble sorry!! but thank you for your sweet ask :-) mwah!!

Sometimes I forget a lot of fgo writing is just “it had to be this way because it had to be this way” with no proper explanation. This game’s backstory is held together by twigs and gluesticks.

Me: posts something from Midnight Mass
Mutuals: Ok, HEAR ME OUT
#BUT I LOVE IT#i love feeling like i have impact on the world even on such a small fairly insignificant scale#and i love you guys#anyway my opinion is:#flanagan is still better in his og stuff than doing adaptations#he has a fairly good grasp of building relationships between characters BUT he seems to struggle with the stories themselves.#he builds and builds this grand idea but then his endings go out with a fizzle not a boom#don't get me wrong the series was entertaining but the actors were a huge part of it they really worked their asses off#if not the charm of hamish linklater and the charisma of everyone else it would fall a bit flat#and of course you gotta let your actors do their thing but the story shouldn't rely on them to be good#i feel like flanagan loves references and patterns too much to the point where he becomes drunk on the concepts and the plot suffers.#which i can understand bc i also love patterns BUT#when you're creating a tv series you can't lose the forest for the trees#(i didn't mind the monologues tho! that's not where the problem lies surprisingly.#it's more the way they're written and how the story is - it's supposed to be deep and it is but it loses the depth when it's overexplained.#sometimes you wish something was withheld from you as the viewer.#like the moment of silence when riley goes out at night and sees the world differently. i really like that moment of stillness#where everything he could have said was felt rather than explained.#so there's that)#i also wish he was more daring#because in the end everything was very simple and explainable. all the reasons all the relationship dynamics.#i personally would push for more ambiguity. more moments of uncertainty and madness#it was all very constrainted. despite there being a literal winged vampiric creature hanging around.#which btw was underutilized. OR could have been eliminated altogether. that would have been interesting.
