I am working on a video about Nintendo’s lgbtq characters. Of course when it comes to splatoon, there’s a certain duo that comes to mind, off the hook.

The problem I’ve been having is that it seems a lot of the information, wether that be the English/japanese bits of dialogue, interviews and other bits of lore, seems to be completely scattered around.

Considering you describe yourself as the “CEO of splatoon lore” I was wondering if you could help me compile any bits and pieces of those two gay cephalopods.

i think the ask box is a good place for this, i'm not as hardcore of a shipper as other people are (more of a worldbuilding enjoyer), but i know there is so much and I don't wanna dig for all of it. I'll share a few off the top of my head. pearlina fans reading this, please feel free to share anything else in the replies/reblogs. 1. Pearl interview from Octotune: its on my mind since i just brought it up in a previous ask I think the artwork in this interview has the strongest implication that pearl and marina live together. genuinely i think this is one of the gayest things there is in canon like theres hearts in that LOVE letter thats directed towards pearl COME ON (i consider it canon as its drawn by seita inoue, who handles splatoon's art direction and a lot of lore/worldbuilding). you can read it here

3. Marina's tagline on Splatoon Base calls her a 恋する乙女 "young lady in love". the word for 'to love' (恋する) is specifically romantic.

4. Off the Hook didn't fight against each other in the s2 final splatfest like the Squid Sisters did because they're on such good terms with each other.

I’ve heard people saying that since the final fest for the last game was a showdown between the Squid Sisters, this time it was bound to be between Off the Hook.

Nogami: I think that’s probably the obvious conclusion, but the development team don’t actually want those two to attack one another. Since the Squid Sisters have their own talents and abilities, even though they are a duo they are also kind of rivals, so we thought we would pit them against each other. Off the Hook, though, are much more of a unit and on good terms with one another, so we didn’t want to force them to fight.

5. Marina has a photo of pearl as her desktop wallpaper. the framing of the photo very much looks romantic and intimate. there is no heterosexual explanation for this

Now that we have confirmation (sorta) that Willow is pan and Hunter is bi, I think the owl house may just be the gayest show ever.

There are literally so many queer characters it exceeds tumblr’s photo limit!!

There’s also Darius and Alador who are shown to like each other in the finale (or at least Darius does), and the titan who is implied to to be genderqueer in some way.

I cannot believe this is a Disney show.

“Okay,” Eddie says, eyes so beautifully brown and dark Buck is reminded of soil after it rains, and when he breathes he swears he can almost catch the sweet smell of petrichor, “maybe just a normal smiling one?”

Buck nods, a little unsure of what to do with his hands and arms and body when Eddie swings an arm over Buck’s shoulders, pulling him close. It’s automatic, really, for Buck to snake his around Eddie’s waist, the pads of his fingers pressing into skin where Eddie’s shirt has pulled up. He can see his blush, rosy pink and speckled across his face, and he ducks his head, smiling softly as he pulls his bottom lip between his teeth.

His head quickly snaps up realizing he hadn’t actually smiled at the camera, but he almost wishes he hadn’t looked at all. The screen is still frozen on their last picture; Buck looking down, blushing and bashful, and Eddie looking at him with the sweetest smile Buck has ever seen on his best friend.

Eddie is looking at him like he’s in love with Buck too.

“I um — I messed up the last picture,” Buck stutters out as a loading screen appears, letting them know their pictures are printing.

“Did you?” Eddie frowns as he looks towards the camera. “I’m sure it’s fine.”

“One more round?” Buck asks hopefully, still intertwined around Eddie. 

He doesn’t want to let go. He wants to hold onto Eddie for as long as he can. He wants to live in this moment and exist in this space where he and Eddie are the only thing that matters. Where Buck can pretend that their stars and planets have aligned in perfect orbit.

“Sure,” Eddie says, eyes twinkling with amusement.

They both lean forward, bumping into each other as they fumble to press the button. Eddie’s forehead hits Buck’s ear and they both kind of half collapse into each other laughing. Buck’s not even sure they’ve managed to start the camera at all. They’re more entangled now and so so close as they sit back up. Both of Buck’s hands are resting on Eddie’s waist, while one of Eddie’s hands lightly grips Buck’s neck. Their laughter quietly dies off as baby blue meets honey brown. Buck tilts his chin slightly up, gaze immediately falling to Eddie’s lips. Eddie’s thumb dips beneath his sweater, sweeping over his skin soothingly.

Buck watches as Eddie’s lips part and his heart beats so hard against his ribcage he’s pretty sure it’s fit to burst any second now just so it can bury itself in the one place it’s always belonged. 

Before he can think to do anything else Eddie’s grip on him tightens for a brief moment and suddenly Eddie is kissing him. It’s a soft, sweet thing, their lips pressing together as their noses brush.

what was it like as a gaylor before 2016?

What an appropriate question on the 10 year anniversary of the kaylor public launch at the VSFS 2013 :) As it's quite a subjective question, prepare for my gaylor/kaylor origin story 😉

I've been a more committed Taylor fan since Red came out in 2012, but because I'm in the UK a lot of the public media buzz about her has passed me by (except for the headlines about her and Harry, that was definitely a big story over here). In spring 2013 the article about her and Dianna exploded on the internet and, despite it obviously being retracted, it perked my ears up because 1. I was also a big glee fan at the time, and 2. it seemed to offer an explanation to why I found her music so relatable having just had my heart broken by a girl and all her genderless breakup songs fit that situation so well. So, I did a bit of research and quickly realised that, if she was in fact with Dianna, it would have been at the same time that she was supposedly dating Harry, as well as that Kennedy guy. No public acknowledgement of any queerness (like ever) so it was very clear to me from the start that, if she is dating women, she is doing it very much in secret. Not a great inspiration for fairly newly out me (23 at the time), so I filed that information and moved on with just her music. Didn't really think about it again until over a year later when a guy in a club decided to bully me and my then gf with the sentence 'Are you a real couple or just bffs like Taylor Swift and that model chick?' Yep, my kaylor origin story is a straight man harassing me in a nightclub. What are the odds, right? 🤭

So, because that remark somehow stuck with me (and I had no idea who that ' model chick' even was) I googled it, expecting to find something similar to the Dianna situation and my jaw hit the floor when I got pages and pages of photos of Taylor and Karlie walking the streets of NYC holding hands, smiling at each other with the biggest heart eyes. It genuinely changed my life. It may sound totally stupid and out of proportion, given that they didn't acknowledge it as a relationship (which I'm aware was doing no favours to lesbian visibility), but it did something to me to see the girl whose music I'd danced to in my bedroom when I was 16 so happily in love with another girl. I'd never seen that sort of love between two women, either in fiction or in real life, and it felt like she'd reached across the miles dividing us to tell me that it's possible, and that if she could find it (even in hiding), I could, too. And somehow it didn't matter to me what they were calling it, I could see what it was and it was everything to me. But I only had a few months to enjoy it before kissgate ruined it and of course the tabloids printed words like 'affair' and ‘scandal' and by March the next year we had Calvin Harris, then Hiddleswift, and then Joe. But at the same time, we got 1989 and rep with some of the gayest music ever written. And I found a great community of fellow queer people on here in those years that seemed to enjoy watching them and seeing their lives in the lyrics as much as I did. I’ve dipped in and out of the online space for years, lurking when there were more kind people around and disappearing when the hate got worse. It was fun to watch it all unfold in real time with people, I’m impressed that people still become new kaylors these days when there is no real time interaction and the hate from the general fanbase towards Karlie is still high since 2018. I don’t think I would be a gaylor today if I hadn’t witnessed their love in front of everybody’s eyes in that year, that really made me resilient to setbacks because I’m just so irretrievably in love with their love story. I’ve seen how Taylor lashes out when she’s cornered and scared (like she did after kiss gate) and sometimes we’re the collateral damage of that. And as much as that sucks it just shows that she’s incredibly protective of her little bubble of happiness and the more you poke the bear the more savage she’ll be in her retaliation. Do I wish she didn’t throw her most loyal supporters off a cliff every time she needs a straight excuse? Of course! But have I also hurt people I care about to protect my loved ones? Yes. So I can’t really judge. I can just take a walk when it gets too much, and wait for the soft shit to pull me back in.

So, to summarise, being a gaylor has always (and will always) have highs and lows, the public narrative is never for us, only the music is. But that's ok with me, I've learned to tune the noise out and enjoy the music, reminding myself that those songs were inspired by one of the greatest love stories I've ever accidently stumbled upon.

'What have you been up to lately, Bunny?' you ask, 'have you been writing a lot?'

No, sweet blog reader I have not. What I have been doing is making pixelated gay people who fell in love in one video game fall in love in another video game. Namely, The Sims 4. For SO MANY HOURS. Let me tell you all about it.

So obviously I have the boys, Ryan and Dylan, plus their best friend and roommate Kaitlyn, and their cat, Schrödinger.

Kaitlyn and Schrödinger have a very... special relationship.

Kaitlyn's a C-lister learning the entertainment industry, but her secret dream is to be a street performer. Dylan works in tech and Ryan is a painter. They all cook together and the cat helps by phasing into the cabinet somehow. Kaitlyn has somehow broken more stereos than any person ever to live, but luckily Dylan is really good with that sort of thing (and sinks, and showers, and toilets, and refrigerators...).

I keep wanting to call Dylan and Ryan boyfriends but they're actually fiancés, ever since Ryan accidentally made a flirty comment to a bartender at Hazakura Lounge in Wakaba and Dylan got a 12 hour sad mood about it (intensely in character, honestly). Ryan then sort of panic-proposed when he was trying to cheer Dylan up (also in character IMO). Maybe not the most romantic story, but, hey, they've been madly in love since that whole werewolf debacle, it's not like it wouldn't have happened eventually.

Sometimes they kiss in this game like they did in that other game (without actually touching). Oh well, at least it looks cute in the mirror.

They don't really seem like big wedding guys to me (and weddings are perpetually broken in The Sims 4 anyway) so they'll probably just elope at some point, but I thought I'd send them on a little getaway to the gayest place in The Sims universe, Sylvan Glade! Used the 'build anywhere' cheat to place some amenities so they could camp there, undisturbed, for a few days (people keep trying to talk to them on dates other places and Ryan, with his Lone Wolf trait, really does not like strangers).

Started out with a nice campfire, feeling a little familiar...

Then things got a bit...

... heated.

Um. Anyway...

Definitely no funny business happening here.

While they were gone, Kaitlyn worked on her miming hobby. Just kidding, she's playing with a lump of clay that our weird neighbor Constance left at our house. The clay was just temporarily invisible for some reason. This game is very stable. She made a clay bunny for the house in honor of me, their benevolent deity! :3

Dylan and Ryan kept living their best gay lives by the rainbow waterfall, with their hot pink canopy bed (doesn't everyone take one of those when they go camping?). They had a couple of cookouts, did some fishing, did some... other stuff... and took these photos.
