Seduced to the Dark Side

The word 'seduce' was always so jarring in the original Star Wars trilogy. My siblings and I used to laugh our heads off imagining Palpatine slowly raising his black robes to expose his pale boney ankle Victorian Lady-styles and this being what convinces Vader to join him.

The Acolyte doesn't ever use the word 'seduce'. Osha says, "That's the path to the dark side". It's Star Wars canon now that they had to start describing it as 'seduced to the dark side' because of Osha and Qimir

I LOVE the fact that Osha and Qimir have haunted the narrative for THOUSANDS of years, causing the Jedi in 9+ movies/shows to be like « Careful, a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away a bad guy got the girl by tilting his head and speaking softly and making her soup and telling her it was okay to have feelings. He even went swimming...(lowers voice to a whisper) naked. Be afraid, be very afraid. Try to resist »

I talked about the Lantern list (a ranking of people who to this day refuse lantern offers) and having Billy Batson be number 1, and have Captain Marvel be number 2.

This would naturally attract the attention of Lantern Cores everywhere (like what do you mean they received offers from multiple lanterns multiple times), the space community (why does the Terra City of Fawcette have dominating spots) as well as the JL (Cap, why are you outclassed by a civilian from your own city).

I also fully believe Lois Lane is on the same boat as Billy Batson when it comes to Lantern offers. One does not jump off buildings or sneak into war zones without a great deal of will power and induce a great deal of fear. Lois Lane is definitely in the top 10.

Coincidentally, in the top 50, you will find Cat Grant, Vic Sage and surprisingly Vicki Vale (if she can make BATMAN shudder and be wary of her, she can make anyone fear her).

So it’s been accepted that journalists have a lot of will power, a lot of rage and can put the fear of god into you. Clark is not bitter that he’s not on the list, no sire. Never mind that Jimmy Olsen is in the Top 100.

Batman might want to study this phenomenon.

But anyways. One does not stay at the top without ridiculous numbers. As the only top 10 ers on earth, they have grown used to random rings trying to get them on space politics quests or whatnot.

So now imagine this: Lois Lane and Billy collab on a project. While they are speaking, random rings start to show up. Instinctively, both swat them away like flies while maintaining eye contact. They don’t realise what they are doing. Clark is having an aneurism.

At some point, they both realise that the other is swatting the rings away with the same nonchalance as the other. They immediately understand what’s up. The shit eating grin they both had made a bunch of yellow rings swarm around them.

Billy gets asked on why he doesn’t want to join the Green lanterns? Billy says it’s because he hates cops. Lois nods.

Hal cries himself to sleep that night.

Bonus:

Batman stalking a civilian named Batson who for some reason is number one in the Lanterns List, with an alarming amount of yellows.

Batman finds a black hair, blue eyes, orphan child.

Batman: Alfred call the guy

The tribe’s opinion of you generally fell into one of three categories:

The Armorer, who tolerated you.

And those who saw you as a harmless oddity who was welcome to stay so long as she continued minding the children — which had turned into therapy from day one, no matter how much anyone tried to pretend it was babysitting. All of the Foundlings lost family during the fall of the Empire. You weren’t encouraging them to draw pictures of their loved ones just because you couldn't come up with anything else better to do.

Problem was, if the grownups didn’t change their approach to childrearing soon (maybe let’s worry a little less about Breha perfecting her Rising Phoenix technique and focus more on managing her anger instead), in a few years’ time the Covert was going to have a passel of dysregulated adolescents on its hands, and in a few years after that, everyone in the Outer Rim would be failing to fend off an entire generation of behavior disordered Mandalorians. 

These were concerns you shared with The Manda’lor (you made a point of intoning it as a proper noun whenever you both were alone, just to annoy him), who quietly arranged for D-5 to drill a small hole in the tribe’s communal barrel of fuel. It took a week to replenish the supply, giving you time to sneak in some basic coping skill lessons between Rising Phoenix 101. By week’s end, Breha failed her flight test and remembered to take three deep breaths before she started throwing blunt objects. And when those blunt objects turned out to be grav charges, everyone started taking the nanny a little more seriously. 

(And if teaching Zones of Regulations to the Mandalorians was how you left your mark on the universe, then you’d die happy.)

Anidala courtly love: The Queen of the galaxy and her dark knight

When people ask how Padme fell for Anakin I believe they forget both of them were quite lonely people before meeting as adults, gifted kids selected from childhood, Padme for her political skill, Anakin for his strenght in the force to help their community and the galaxy, without much of a life of their own. Still both of them were raised to become bigger people than themselves, to sacrifice for their community to bring justice to the galaxy.

They were grateful for their opportunities but they also felt empty, Anakin missed his mother and feared for her life while Padme longed to have a family of her own but her work took most of her time and she knew she was needed.

They meet as many fairytales begin, with Padme as a child Queen trying to rescue her castle from evil while child/slave Anakin longed to become her knight in shinning armor to help her and her people despite the dangers to himself.

Together they stopped the plans of the dark sorcerer who planned to take over the kingdom, Palpatine, not knowing he would take revenge on them at the right time.

Padme already loved Anakin as a friend before they meet again as adults and she started to notice him not just as a friend but also as a man who was gifted as her but also lonely and longing for love, Anakin risked his life to save her planet without asking anything, he did it because they were friends, he could not lie to her to save his life, he doesn´t like it when people lie to him either and his personality makes this harsh for him, he is too transparent, he has the honesty of the soldier/of the warrior not the guiles of the politicians, he told her he could not live without her and he was honest, for a policitician used to listen to skilled liars trying to woo her 24/7, this can be quite attractive and then they shared a force bond.

They were modeled after the old courtly love where the lady is like a Queen to her knight , the lady becomes their inspiration for the hero to keep fighting the good fight.

Palpatine twisted that, he used their love agaisnt each other, Padme and Anakin started to lie to each other and doubt about their loyalties, the war took a toll on Anakin and his wounds from slavery and his mother´s death never were addresed, Padme could see this fear growing in Anakin but had her own duties trying to start a movement to stop her old mentor from becoming Emperor, she thoguht she was going to have more time. This conflict between them was born from Palpatine´s machinations and their weakness for each other was the cherry on top for their fall but their love was real from the beggining.

Both of them end up dying, that was Palpatine´s revenge, he killed Anakin spiritually, slaving him to his throne to use his power while Padme died from the sadness of her lover´s betrayal and the fall of the republic but in the center of their fall lied Palpatine´s own downfal as their children grew up to take down his kingdom and free their father.

Star wars is a fairytale that touches realistic and scific narratives and it´s great to see those old themes being brought again to tell stories.

accidentally'ed sifo as a form vi user. not in the 'all form vi users died in the geonosis arena' but in the 'exar kun used form vi' way. in the 'this is the bitchiest lightsaber form' way. the 'hybrid style of previous forms minus form ii' way.

Sifo-Dyas fights astonishingly dirty. I don’t know if it’s a reaction or learned behaviour from growing up with Dooku, but he deeply enjoys getting inside someone’s guard and heading straight for them, using his lightsaber more as a tool to play keep-away with his opponent’s. Dedication to a single form? Nope. He chooses opening moves from Soresu’s suite of self-defence if he’s actually engaging in prolonged combat. If he wants it over as fast as possible, then he’s just going to settle into one of Shii-Cho’s simple opening stances and kick straight up and out at the underside of your ’saber hand at the first opportunity. Do not fight this man when there is sand about. It will end up in your eyes.

Once upon a time

Everyone knows once upon a time, but did you know that countless cultures have their variation of how classic stories begin, and one one from Welsh is, "A long time ago," similar to a few others from other cultures that go, "A long long time ago."

But, some, like Lithuanian go: "Beyond nine seas, beyond nine lagoons," similar to the Czech, "Beyond seven mountain ranges, beyond seven rivers."

These are some variations from Arab texts: This happened or maybe it did not. The time is long past and much is forgot.

There was or there was not—is anything sure or certain but the greatness of Allah?—a king so powerful that man and Djinn bowed before him.

This is how many Hausa tales are begun “A story, a story. Let it go, let it come.”

And of course, we have one that is a combination and modern invention that has become part of media culture and storied greatness: "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away." <3

These are just some. But it's been among the most wonderful part of my research before I began putting down the first words for Tales of Tremaine. But the art of storytelling is one of the most human things there is. It's central to us, and it has passed long and far by tongue and time over lands and through cultures. Some beginnings are so similar to each other, some not so much.

But then you see the threads between them in the stories, the themes, tropes, archetypes, motifs. But the traditions span the world. They are old. They are cool. And they are beautiful.

And storytelling is one of the gifts that connects us all, like music, and other arts.
