Something I think is extremely interesting thematically when it comes to connecting what Downfall and the ideas it tackled to the overarching narrative of campaign three is that the things Downfall made a point to showcase of Aeor—Cassida, Hallis, the visual of an aeormaton proposing to her partner, the specific and intentional decision to shed light on a far from insignificant amount of the population being civilians or refugees—is that it plays in perfect parallel across from what is happening (and, really, has been happening) to the ruidusborn on Exandria in present.

Bear with me for a moment. Aeor is ultimately a city that was collectively punished for the decisions of its leadership. We could (and, judging by the amount of discourse around this particular topic already, probably will) argue about what the Gods’ motivation for all of this was—whether it be that they could not, in the end, bear to kill their siblings or that they were terrified at the prospect of mortality—for me it is a very healthy dose of both—but for this I am much more interested in the latter. They were scared. That, really, is the driving force behind both this arc and their role in c3 as a whole.

Why I point this out is: It is far more interesting to me, especially as we go back to Bells Hells this week, to dissect the Gods and their decisions not purely on sympathetic motivation alone but as beings in the highest seat of power in the highest social class in Exandria.

So, having established that the Gods (in relation to mortals) are more a higher social class than anything we could compare to our real life understanding of divinity and that Aeor was eviscerated largely because of their fear—what is the difference between those innocents in Aeor caught in the trappings of their autocratic government leadership and a divine war on the ground, and those of the ruidusborn being manipulated both by Ludinus and by the very thing that inspired such visceral fear in the Gods to start with. I would argue very little.

I think of Cassida, doing what she genuinely thought was right and good and would save people, her son, and the object of her worship—and how that did not matter enough to any of them to spare her because of the fear they held at the very concept of mortality. I think of Liliana and Imogen, one of which we know begged for the gods to help her or send her a sign for years on years, and how every single one of their largest struggles could have been avoided had the gods loved them, their supposed children, as much as they feared what they could be. I think of how the thing that did save Imogen, in the end, was a woman who herself existed in direct defiance of the gods will. I think of that young boy, sixteen years old, that Laudna exalted on Ruidus.

I think it’s completely fair to judge Aeor’s overall society as deeply corrupt—it was!—but its leadership and police force are not a reflection of every one of its citizens. Similarly, it is fair to judge the Ruby Vanguard as corrupt—it is!—but its multiple heads of leadership and even the god-eater further are not a reflection of every one of its members.

Notably, and what I think the Hells will latch onto, this did not matter to the Gods. It did not matter that Cassida was trying to help. She was still too much of a risk. Will it matter, what Imogen does? Will it matter, if that young boy is in the blast radius when they decide to take no further chances?

I’ve seen a lot of people say that the Hells will side with the gods and I don’t think I agree. Especially as Imogen has been scolded and villainized over and over for daring to try and save her mother—who herself has been seen by some as an irredeemable evil in spite of her drive being the exact same—her family—but when it’s the Gods it’s justified? When it’s the Gods, it’s sympathetic? Too sympathetic to criticize further than “they’re family”?

I obviously do not think the Gods should die or be eaten or what have you, and I certainly don’t agree with Ludinus (though I find him much more compelling than just a variation of hubris wizard), but when talking about the Gods in Aeor and in present it isn’t really at all about their motivation or their family. It can’t be. Too many people, including our active protagonists, lives have been effected for it to be as cut and dry as “they’re family”. These are your children. They are your family, too.

Noticing that TV and film will often have a character either have had an abortion in the past that isn't showcased on screen (and just used as part of the character's ~fucked up and twisted backstory~) OR contemplate getting an abortion in the present day but not to through with it. I'm glad I'm old enough to see how much the world has progressed. As awful as things have been, I think the progress is easy to forget.

When I was in high school, I tried really hard to get into cosplay (I tried, and I tried, but I am not a good seamstress). Most of my failed attempts were crossplays. Back in those days, cosplay.com was popular, and it had a huge, beautiful forum of people sharing tutorials and tips and advice. Regarding crossplay, binding was, of course, a common topic. I, along with many others, used to put on a sports bra and then wrap Ace bandages as tightly as I could around my chest. It achieved a good effect—I once spent a weekend at a con with my chest bound like this all day long, but eventually, people started realizing this was dangerous. So then the suggested thing to do was to wear adjustable back braces over your chest. I personally never tried that, mostly because I didn't want to shell out $30 or so for one, but also because I was skeptical about how dangerous my Ace bandages actually were.

After the back braces came binders. I remember there was one site where you could buy them—they were expensive—and another where you could get on a waiting list to receive a free one. I remember thinking it was unethical that cosplayers were signing up for those because the donors obviously intended the binders for trans people. Those were the only options I remember (keep in mind, cosplay.com was the only resource I was using). I gave up on cosplay, eventually, partly because I was so bad at sewing, but mostly because I felt I was too ugly to participate. And then the cosplay.com forums got shut down and archived permanently, so that community was lost.

But my husband and I are going to an anime themed drag show later this year, and we figured some audience members would probably be in cosplay. We decided it would be fun (and easy) to dress up as Light and L in handcuffs. I have a fairly large chest, so, on a whim, I looked up binders, and I bought one from a reputable site for a reasonable price and there wasn't a waiting list...from research to purchase, I spent under 30 mins buying this binder.

I'm not trans, and I won't pretend I know how it feels to be trans, but it made me really happy that I could find and buy a binder so easily. Regardless of why they're doing it, I hope no one ever has to bind their chest with Ace bandages or back braces ever again.

I feel like I'm the only one that thinks the Lost Cities wouldn't be homophobic

Like I absolutely understand that the matchmaking system is built upon genetics and having children and so it seems logical that elves would only like hetero couples

but 1. As humans we have technically already figured out a way for two women to reproduce with each other so there's a very good chance elves have too

2. Shannon emphasizes constantly that the Lost Cities have different prejudices from the Forbidden Cities and the reason they think of themselves as so much better than humans is because they don't have all the issues that humans do so to add homophobia would take away from that entire message

3. Because of immortality many elves never get married or even apply to the match the only thing in the Lost Cities that is seen as scandalous is marrying and having children with someone who's not on your match list

4. the fact that many elves don't have children or get married (and as far as I'm aware aren't judged for it) I don't think the having children aspect is actually as important as some people think it is

5. all these same things apply to trans people I think there's a very good chance that when an elf is trans they just tell their parents and transition literally right after they come out (which could be right after their out of the womb considering they can talk immediately) because gender has no standing on what ability an elf will manifest

Bonus, I also think the elves being pro-life because of inception dates (I've only seen this a couple times but still) is also not something that would actually happen I think the elves almost definitely have 100% affective contraceptive so they literally don't have children until they want to and they most likely count by inception date 1. because they can easily tell what day it is because of the weird belly button thing and 2. because elvin biology and/or development is clearly different from humans considering they talk from birth and so it's more accurate to count from the inception date

On that point I want to once again emphasize that elves don't have the same norms and culture that humans do they have entirely different ways of living and don't have the same discrimination or prejudices that humans do and it defeats the point to say they do

Honestly I think the main reason there aren't any queer people in kotlc is because Shannon just like hasn't thought to add them

I'm on a 3 day first aid course for my job and while I didn't exactly expect it to be chill given the subject matter, I like learning things and thought it would be nice to do something a little different to my regular shifts. literally 10 minutes in one of the attendees is interrogating the course leader about the phrasing of one of the questions, because it says gender and she thinks it should say sex. because she "doesn't believe in any of this gender nonsense" 💀
