YALL, idk if I’m dumb or something and everyone else alr knows this, but those random words at the beginning of Cardigan?? They’re a comparaison of Augustine and Betty!!

Vintage Tee- Betty. Shes “old” or “the old” girlfriend, yet James still “uses” her and acknowledges her.

Brand New Phone- Augustine. She’s brand new, and a phone, basically a shiny little plaything for James.

High heels on cobblestone- this one is just an explanation. James was walking home on broken COBBLESTONE, while Betty was probably wearing HIGH HEELS to the dance he saw her dancing at. Augustine “ruins” this little moment thing.

Sequin smile- Augustine. Her smile is sparkly, again new, perfect, with layers to it. She’s trying to get James, and get him to stay. She wants to stand out.

Black Lipstick- Betty. What’s black a color for? Mourning. She’s mourning the old relationship. She’s also who James sees as more serious, and of course the black lipstick mouth would be more serious than the sequined mouth!

Sensual- Augustine. We don’t hear James, or even Augustine for that matter, talk about their relationship as anything more than desire. Just plan desire. Desperate longing. And sex. It’s hinted at that it’s happened, and probably a fair bit. Why else would a teenage boy cheat? And it’s Augustine’s first time, which only ingrains that sensual idea more.

Politics- Betty. Again, with that “serious” business. Politics are also KNOWN for being messy on the inside, presentable on the outside, which is how I think James saw Betty. Politics deal with a lot of shady stuff, and trickery, which sums up James pretty well.

Yeah ok tell me if I’m dumb or something but idk I like this theory a lot lol.

okay so uh. i keep seeing stuff about the folklore love triangle, but I'm clearly a little new to being a swiftie, and rather than just google it, i was wondering if you'd like to explain it for me 😅 if not, that's totally fine too though.

Hey Kazzy! So from my understanding James (Betty) was in love with Betty (cardigan) for some time but saw her dancing with some other guy once and thought she didn’t love him anymore so he hooked up with Augustine (august) for a Summer but ended up regretting it and wanting to apologize to Betty and get back together. Poor Augustine actually got feelings for James but was left behind
