Port Talbot
From Submarine by Joe Dunthorne
Port Talbot by night is GCSE maths as it ought to be taught; an equation with glitz - pipes run through the air unsupported, kinked at wacky angles just for the fun of it; rows of giant, bracketed smokestacks, wrapped in ladders, scaffold, long division; there are billowing yellow flames, dense blue flames, and sometimes, on a good day, a flame of toxic green. X equals one of the thousands of orange carbon lights that cling to every structure: the points of a line graph awaiting connection. There are tall, thin towers, dirty at the top like chewed-on pencils. […]
My parents like to blame Port Talbot for a number of local problems: leukaemia, lymphoma, asthma, eczema, brain tumours, and the lack of investment in Swansea city centre. There is a stretch of houses between the motorway and the steelworks that Dad calls ‘Melanoma Way’.
I used to say: I do not believe in scenery. This is still true but I would send postcards home of Port Talbot by Night.

forever obsessed with dynamics between vampires, specifically that of a maker and fledgling, as a way to explore abuse. the creation of a vampire itself can so easily be a literalization of the lasting impacts of trauma and also much more simply the ways a perpetrator might shape their victim’s very identity. the extremes of isolation in the way that the new vampire, in most narratives, must cut all ties to their mortal life, or else go through an elaborate charade to maintain the facade of humanity, while forever still being removed from it. and the sheer dependence and vulnerability of being in an entirely new state of being, wholly uncertain of what it entails, and relying on another person to define… everything.
#or just the moral dilemmas#rewatching amc interview is kind of making me insane#that moment in episode two when louis is looking for a sort of assurance in the fact that lestat may actually have some good in him#look at how he cares about music look at the simple wondrous things that can bring him joy#and then the immediate dread when the opera performance turns out to be imperfect because he knows how lestat will react to *that*#I think there’s also something really interesting in the highlighting of lestat upbraids the less skilled singer before killing him#(slowly)#but also I will wait to watch more before I articulate my thoughts#vampires#interview with the vampire#amc interview with the vampire#i ramble sometimes#I do still find the lestat and claudia film and novel dynamic by far the most compelling for how she tries to usurp him but almost to be him#but I’m enjoying this#I’m very curious if I will like show claudia more on rewatch#the movie always resonated most with me (sue me lol) because there seemed to be more simultaneous fondness and attachment even at the end

okay so:
the year is 2021. the month is june. the new season of hermitcraft, season 8, has just started, and everything is great! the hermits are all messing around, having fun, building insane things within the first week of the server being active, and generally having a good time. everyone's collected themselves into little factions, pranking each other, and it's all the fun, lighthearted, mostly-vanilla content hermitcraft is known for.
and then the split between minecraft versions 1.18 and 1.19 is announced. the delay of new terrain, and especially of new mobs like the warden, considerably disrupt several of the hermits' plans. but it's fine, they'll figure something out, they're professionals, and it mostly goes unnoticed.
about two weeks later, on november 9th, grian turns to mumbo jumbo in one of his episodes, and asks the famous question that would seal hermitcraft season 8's fate:
"mumbo, is the moon... big?"
suddenly, the fans panic. they search back through videos and streams, and realize that the moon had been abnormally large and stuck in a full-moon phase since october 30th. the Moon Big event has begun.
this is where the roleplay really starts. once the moon's size has been brought up, the hermits start a weird combination of scrambling to figure out why the moon's growing, and how to stop it- but also of ignoring it, hoping it won't be a problem, hoping someone else will deal with it. the moon keeps getting bigger, more hermits start realizing it's going on, and a creeping sense of dread starts to grow. but it's fine. it's fine, right? they do little plotlines like this all the time. they'll figure something out, the moon will go back to normal, and we'll laugh about it when this is all over. it's fine.
and then, blocks start flying away. just floating up out of the ground, and falling right back down! like for a moment, a square meter chunk of dirt has decided it's a ballerina and leaped out of the ground! but it's fine, right? the blocks are coming back. no lasting harm is done. they're going to fix it all... right?
the moon gets bigger. it's growing every day- local hermit weirdguy joe hills measures it every stream. the blocks start flying higher. gravity starts getting... weird, with players getting the slow falling effect at random, and being lifted off of the earth themselves. the players form cults and rituals and whatnot to try and appease the moon, convince it to leave them alone, making plans to escape. nothing works. things keep getting worse, and the moon keeps getting bigger. but it'll be fine. these storylines never leave lasting harm, or at least they never have before. they'll be fine.
and then the blocks stop coming back, just floating into the sky forever. the players have the slow falling effect more than they don't now. the moon is now so big it's visible even during the day, and fills the entire sky at night. they start planning their escapes in earnest, and say their goodbyes. some hermits jump into a void hole in the overworld (it was the centerpiece of their village). some flee to the End, some to the nether, some just fly with elytras and hope they can get far enough away in time. one brave hermit, tango, flies himself to the moon in a futile attempt to blow the whole thing up before it can crash.
but in the end, the moon crashes into the server, and everything they'd built was destroyed. and the whole time, there'd been nothing any of them could've done. season eight was over, a full six months before anyone had expected it to end, and season nine wouldn't start until about three months later. and im still not okay about it.
(here's a cool animatic of the moon's crash! honestly i dont think you need too much hermitcraft knowledge to get the gist)
(also the moon crash happened on the day before my birthday lmao.)
….
holy shit
#ok ok let me see if i have the timeline correctly:#1) s8 begins in June and so does the new update announcement#2) months go by with no issue (that they’re aware of)#3) it’s in November when they realize the moon has been growing#4) does the moon crash in January???#but gawddam#that is one apocalypse story if I’ve heard of one#also fitting bc i think it was 2021 where we were getting a LOT of asteroid/moon fall movies#idk what was in the air (possibly the pandemic that led to unforced isolation & ppl coped with apocalypse stories)#and somehow that bled through to a Minecraft server???? somehow?????#wild#this also reminds me of an apocalypse movie i watched with a friend called ‘3 Días’#very good movie btw#highly recommend (it is a Spanish only film which i don’t think will be an issue bc subtitles)#anyway#asks#smp 101 with gumy#hermitcraft edition!

RIP Teri Garr (December 11, 1944-October 29, 2024)
Known for Young Frankenstein, Tootsie, and Friends, she was also the brightest spot in Star Trek's otherwise lackluster backdoor pilot of a Season Two finale, Assignment: Earth, as Roberta Lincoln. (After all, we know Kirk has a fondness for Lincolns.)
#star trek#star trek tos#teri garr#roberta lincoln#jim kirk#spock#captain kirk#gary seven#assignment: earth#this might be my least watched episode of trek#it's very dull and makes the tos characters look stupid just to make gary seven look better#too bad they couldn't give him a personality#rip teri garr#garr was definitely the only reason to watch that episode other than the cat#i might have to watch it again in her honour#she's very good and also young frankenstein is a formative film

I really like how Donnie and Mikey having the shortest mask tails makes so much sense in regard to them being an inventor and an artist/cook respectively. If their mask tails were longer, it could be dangerous and/or get in the way of what they were trying to do.
Meanwhile Raph is large enough that his longer mask tails wouldn’t be easily used against him in fighting or sparring, plus the longer tails definitely make for a more standard hero/ninja look which would make him lean into it more.
Leo likes long mask tails because he can flip them.
#rottmnt#rise donnie#rise mikey#rise raph#rise leo#rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles#rottmnt headcanons#this is also how I see their hair going in any human au for the most part#since Leo straight up wears one of those long nightcaps for sleeping I think he just likes the feeling so he’d definitely have longer hair#donnie’s I see as constantly put up and not very long#Mikey’s I see as the shortest#though I love Raph with a buzz cut I also love him with longer braids too#but yeah Leo likes his mask tails long I personally think for three reasons#1) they look good with his stripes and help him stand out#2) he can hit people with them and annoy them#3) he wants to emulate popular characters he sees in film and other media and the standard popular mean girls absolutely count#adding on for Donnie too I think he’d just be annoyed by long hair#Mikey I see as keeping his hair short and natural but putting lots of accessories in it

Ravenous is Haunted
Within the lore of Ravenous, eating people causes you to “absorb [their] spirit,” but what does that mean in practice?
Ives mentions that eating someone brave gives you a surge of bravery, which is exactly how Boyd goes from too scared to move to single-handedly capturing the enemy command. The spirit of his fellow soldiers and specifically his commanding officer compel him to do it. But we know that this personality shift is not permanent, it abates. However, I believe that there are other more subtle influences that remain.
There’s a whole collection of things Boyd, Ives, and Hart do and say that mirror the actions and words of the people they’ve eaten…
The protectiveness that Boyd shows towards the Fort Spencer crew after Ives arrives as colonel is a new trait for him and highly reminiscent of Reich’s protectiveness towards Toffler. From the moment he’s stuck with Ives at the fort, Boyd also immediately decides to murder him, the thing that Reich died furious at him for not doing, and never strays from this mission at all. Boyd and Ives both headbutt each other in their final fight, a Knox fighting move, and Boyd also attempts to strangle Ives at one point, which is Reich’s. Another example that I like is when Hart says to the chickens he’s feeding “run away! run for your lives!” which is what Toffler died doing. These are all small moments in isolation, but together they form a compelling picture.
For another thing, you have Boyd mentioning to Hart near the end the “nightmares” he’s “still” having about Reich, Cleaves, and Knox. These aren’t just random trauma nightmares, they are specifically about the three people of the Fort Spencer crew that he’s eaten. And, considering how strongly Hart reacts to the mention of this, he is likely experiencing the same thing. Since it is canon that they have actually ABSORBED these people by eating them, I don’t think it’s a stretch at all to call this a haunting.
Put these together and you have the people who have been eaten haunting the cannibal characters at night and maintaining at least some sway over them by day, often without them even realizing it… Fun stuff!
As far as Ives goes, I think that he is less affected by this phenomenon than Boyd and Hart are. He’s been eating people for much longer than they have, he has no moral compass whatsoever, and he has a very strong personality, so he’s not gonna let a little haunting get to him. That being said, who knows what quirks of his personality we might be able to attribute to people he’s eaten in the past if we knew more about them? I also think that his assumption that he is unaffected by the people he eats is a part of his downfall, and I’ll explain that in a moment.
The last thing I want to talk about is the bell because that’s what REALLY gets me mmmmmmmmmmm… SO! During Boyd’s fight with Ives, there’s a moment where Ives has fled the room they were fighting in and Boyd doesn’t know where he is, so he’s checking behind all these random doors and not finding him when he hears a bell ringing in the courtyard. He goes out and sees the ringing bell but no one near it. Instead of going towards it where he knows Ives is likely waiting for him though, he walks towards the barn, as if in a daze. When he enters, he sees the bear trap and gets an “Aha!” look on his face.
Now, who do we know who is associated with both that bell and a bear trap? It’s Reich! He is the only person we ever see ring that bell and (in a deleted scene) he uses bear traps as target practice, shooting at them to snap them shut while Boyd watches. So, at the very least, we can say that Reich indirectly inspires Boyd in that course of action.
BUT, because I am me, I’d like to take it a step further by proposing that, since Reich is haunting both Boyd AND Ives, he influences Ives to ring the bell (with Ives not consciously thinking anything more of about than “this will surely get Boyd’s attention >:)”) and then influences Boyd to walk over to the barn instead of immediately continuing the fight so he can show him how to end it once and for all. Boyd asked Reich to “tell me what to do,” and Reich answered him!
I did also write a fic about this concept a few years ago if anyone is interested!
#ravenous 1999#hopefully this will reach everyone who expressed interest in this idea!#i am TRULY obsessed with it… this is my exclusive reading of the film now#i’m not claiming it’s 100% canon - but it’s also not subjective to me#Ravenous Ghosts REAL!!!!!!!#i also do like the idea that the eaten people can manifest in people’s nightmares individually or come all together to Yell At Them#depending on the circumstances… depending on the vibes…#but yeah tldr: Reich’s ghost rang the bell… to me…#oh ALSO if you’re gonna read the fic - please watch the deleted scenes first#it does NOT make sense without them#particularly without the extended Slauson scenes which i still think should have been in the final film#which imply that Slauson absolutely knows that Boyd Did A Survival Cannibalism#and very possibly believes that the rest of the Fort Spencer crew WERE murdered#but pressures Boyd to cover it all up for the sake of the economy (which is also to Slauson’s own benefit)#and uses the cannibalism thing to blackmail him#it’s sooooooooo good#but yeah… honestly leave it to me to publish a fic that makes zero sense unless you’ve seen four deleted scenes#AND are aware of my highly specific Ghost Analysis…#iconic - truly

Each time I start a project I'm allowing myself one "LOOK! I'M CREATING!" post to get it out of my system. I've had so much nervous excited antsy energy with all the TDTEBU news that it's gotten me to revitalize projects that have been collecting dust for over 4 years!
#not to inspire false hope but it's been a very very very very very long time since i've been so excited for something of my own creation and#been able to see it so clearly so! i hope you will enjoy when it's finished#it's very low stakes and silly but it's a good outlet to expell all of this antsy energy because the anticipation for this film has made a#WRECK OUT OF ME#lt#not bad for a guy that never took a lesson in his life!#also shoutout if you remember what this is originally... now that i know how to properly storyboard it's gonna be so much better

Good Omens season 2 referencing Powell & Pressburger films
Crowley's angel hair is modeled after Kim Hunter's hair as June in A Matter of Life and Death (1946).
Maggie's shop is called The Small Back Room in reference to 1949's The Small Back Room.
The red ballet shoes on the door of Give Me Coffee or Give Me Death are a nod to The Red Shoes (1948). (Note : the klaxons sounding in Heaven at the end of episode 1 are said to be a nod to the alarm bells in The Other World in A Matter of Life and Death. Personally, I don't think they sound at all alike; they are only similar in both being alarms. Plus, it's an audio reference, which I don't have the skill or patience to include here. But it's there!)
In The Small Back Room, Maggie has a poster for the film Stairway to Heaven displayed. A Matter of Life and Death was released under this title in the US.
The tartan hills welcoming Aziraphale to Scotland are a reference to the tartan hills welcoming Joan to Scotland in I Know Where I'm Going! (1945). And of course, the third episode is itself titled "I Know Where I'm Going."
Jim drops the book My Best Games of Chess, 1924-1937, by Alexander Alekhine, onto a table in the bookshop repeatedly as he is discovering how gravity works. This book is featured prominently in A Matter of Life and Death.
When Aziraphale enters The Resurrectionist pub in Edinburgh, I Know Where I'm Going! is playing on both televisions (I'm pretty sure I found the right scene to match this screenshot). You can also make out the name 'Pressburger' on one of the posters in this screenshot, but we'll get to that later. . .
The family name on the mausoleum where Aziraphale and Crowley hide out with Elspeth and Wee Morag is Archers. It's never clearly seen in the show, but it can be seen in this BTS photo of the model used for Crowley's embiggening. The Archers was the name of Powell and Pressburger's production company. The interior of the tomb and the urns outside the full-size set also reference the Archers, and Powell & Pressburger individually.
In Mr. Arnold's record shop, one of the posters on the wall is for a UK music tour; either the band or the tour is titled Met By Moonlight. This is referencing Ill Met By Moonlight (1957), the final film Powell & Pressburger made together. (I personally think this one is a reach, as the title of the film is a line from A Midsummer Night's Dream and thus not really clockable to the outside viewer as a direct Archers reference, but apparently the intent was there so we're counting it!)
The Pressburger posters are more clearly visible during the Gabriel and Beelzebub rendezvous scene in The Resurrectionists pub. We can see they advertise 'Pressburger Scottish Lager,' which is of course a nod to Emeric Pressburger himself. (Unclear if Michael Powell has his own label that we just don't get a clear view of. . .)
-- -- -- -- --
I clocked a couple of these myself, but they are all referenced in the X-Ray trivia on the Prime Video player. Would love to know if anyone has clocked anymore that aren't divulged. . .
#as a side note : please watch a matter of life and death#it is exquisite as a film and also very relevant to gomens interests#it's on youtube!#good omens#powell and pressburger#the archers#a matter of life and death#the small back room#the red shoes#i know where i'm going#ill met by moonlight

Yeah honestly I didn't mind the ratfish even though I disagreed with 90% of his takes, I just wish we could have had some payoff of seeing the cast react to him and I kinda don't get why they didn't do that. It felt like a weird choice
#game changer#i also feel like stakes would have felt higher if there was some consequence for the ratfish being discovered#like theyd lose a power or something? idk#it just kinda felt like it was 'the cast + some random guy who decides who wins or loses based on nothing'#which to be fair game changer does similar stuff all the time#but most of the time we get to see the casts reactions to that revelation and thats what makes it fun#idk. honestly part 1 was very good and i liked parts of the finale#but ive come to expect more from dropout#it just felt unsatisfying#some sort of scheduling/filming conflict or something maybe? but the ratfish was reacting to the cast in real time#maybe for some reason he had to film remotely in a different city and thats why he couldnt be there?#but still then why wouldnt you have him zoom in for a reveal or something#i just dont get it tbh#game changer spoilers

okay, okay, yes, me and my wife. but also this is a deeply clever and horrifying premise. like "i live in your house" and it becomes true. because he lives in your head, and he is living there. He is in your house even if he isn't.
and you spend the whole time thinking- if its in her head, it will get better once someone else is there- her wife, a loved one who has been expressing concern for her wellbeing.
And then she arrives, and invites him in. And it ends with "do you hear that" and an unbothered "yes".
HORRIFYING. well shot, well written, well composed, well acted.
#smosh#amanda lehan canto#👌#really good! also the cinematography and use of very bold and bright colors for patricks character vs the muted dreary tones for valerie#and when valerie is outside the lighting is normal which almost makes it worse bc she should be safe. but.#anyway! lovely piece. everyone involved did a GREAT job.#also domestic amangela (at the cost of amanda's character absolutely losing her mind/sense of safety with presumably no one on her side)#angela giarratana#patrick mcdonald#i live in your house#the pacing is interesting but. potentially thats just the nature of it being a short film? hm.
