It's funny how Biden started the year being known as Sleepy Joe the Alzheimer's candidate and now he's the most mentally fit octogenarian in a race against Crime Clown who Can't Finish a Sentence and Farts In His Sleep and Brain Worm Mercury Poisoning Nepobaby.
Well, "funny" isn't the right word exactly. It's actually something between schadenfreude and existential dread for the future of humanity, but I don't know if there's even a word for that feeling. Any Germans in the notes?

“I have an eerie feeling that America will soon taste the same ashes that Rome did as it burned to the ground.”

Someday I will write 90s Amerus fic. That day isn’t now (biggest writing block rn), but someday. Many of the 90s fics in the English fandom are too incorrect in my opinion when it comes to historical contexts — and I know why, but it is 😄 grating

Read any good books since your last update about your recent reading?
Yes, although I forget when I last shared the books I've been reading, so hopefully I don't repeat anything.
I know that I've repeated this book because I've mentioned it several times over the past couple of weeks, but I can't help but remind everyone again about Steve Coll's excellent new book, The Achilles Trap: Saddam Hussein, the C.I.A., and the Origins of America's Invasion of Iraq (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO). It's definitely the best book I've read so far this year, and it's one of the better books I've read in the past 10 years.
Other recent books that I've read and would recommend checking out:
•Radiant: The Life and Line of Keith Haring (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Brad Gooch
•The Far Land: 200 Years of Murder, Mania, and Mutiny in the South Pacific (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Brandon Presser
•UFO: The Inside Story of the U.S. Government's Search for Alien Life Here -- and Out There (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Garrett M. Graff Garrett Graff has quickly become one of those authors who I go out of my way to immediately pick up his latest books because he's so well-connected and I ALWAYS learn fascinating things from his books. I don't know if there's a writer/journalist today who has better access to the American defense establishment or proven to be more capable of shining a light on many of the most secretive aspects of the United States government.
•"Uncool and Incorrect" in Chile: The Nixon Administration and the Downfall of Salvador Allende (BOOK | KINDLE) by Stephen M. Streeter
•Life After Power: Seven Presidents and Their Search for Purpose Beyond the White House (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Jared Cohen
•The Liberation of Paris: How Eisenhower, de Gaulle, and von Choltitz Saved the City of Light (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Jean Edward Smith
•Unruly: The Ridiculous History of England's Kings and Queens (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by David Mitchell
•The Rise and Fall of a Palestinian Dynasty: The Husaynis, 1700-1948 (BOOK) by Ilan Pappe
•In the Houses of Their Dead: The Lincolns, the Booths, and the Spirits (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Terry Alford
•Kingdoms of Faith: A New History of Islamic Spain (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Brian A. Catlos
•Borgata: Rise of Empire: A History of the American Mafia, Volume 1 of the Borgata Trilogy (BOOK | KINDLE) by Louis Ferrante
•Soldier of Destiny: Slavery, Secession, and the Redemption of Ulysses S. Grant (BOOK | KINDLE) by John Reeves
•His Final Battle: The Last Months of Franklin Roosevelt (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Joseph Lelyveld
•Charlie Chaplin vs. America: When Art, Sex, and Politics Collided (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Scott Eyman

I s2g I am going to maim anyone who tells me I should still vote for Biden in the next election because ~the alternative is worse~. I am never showing a fucking ounce of support for him, I will not fucking vote for him, nothing can be said that would convince me that fucking genocide joe is any better than a republican, and I will not be fucking guilted for refusing to have more blood on my hands. “no possibility for a ceasefire” when thousands of children are being fucking maimed and murdered. when entire families are being wiped out and thousands are being forcibly displaced and having their lives and livelihoods stripped away. these deaths are not somehow more acceptable or justified because they’re being overseen by a democratic president. I hope your conscience eats away at you forever if you bear witness to what is happening in Gaza and still vote for him. death to milquetoast liberals and death to this fucking country.

Me, an American, researching the fall of the Roman Republic and noticing some... parallels:
Tumblr media
Image description: a gif from what looks like a 90s anime film, showing a woman leaning in to look at a computer and seeing that it is glitching and repeating itself. She looks at it wide-eyed in concern and fascination.
#original#american politics#rome#roman empire#really Rome fell multiple times in a way. I feel like the Roman Republic dissolving and becoming an Empire is a kind of fall.#listen. i want the state to dissolve as much as the next guy but we have got to get on this community organizing and defense business ASAP#because when empires fall it often ends most poorly for the folks who are already the most in need of help#and that is the extent of my modern knowledge. my ancient-world knowledge tells me now is a good time to invest in#horse-mounted combat.#so i guess i should learn more about the gun debate as it pertains to Black liberation bc i only ever hear the white side of the gun debate#and I'm not saying that Erik Killmonger was RIGHT i am just saying that he was actually probably right and there is a reason that the film#had him strangle an old woman and burn the sacred flower grove after becoming King of Wakanda and the reason is that otherwise he is#just the hero of the film.#and we can't have a marvel film that isn't painfully centrist and we can't have a marvel film that changes the social landscape of the#shared universe#anyway i do still think mounted combat sounds rad as hell but it is possibly outdated lol#also i heard this great limestone recipe for building GREAT BIG DOMES#which seemed important to Rome. their domes outlasted their shitty government anyway.#if anyone shows up claiming to be the next Caesar kill him immediately. but watch out. he has a nephew who will HUNT YOU DOWN LIKE DOGS#that was an octavian caesar joke. he was julius Caesar's great nephew and (posthumously) adopted son#and also the single scariest bitch in roman history. if this was Heathers he'd be the red one. and also Veronica would die halfway thru#because you DO NOT WANT TO FUCK WITH OCTAVIUS CAESAR
