In honour of the episode “Greg” releasing 8yrs ago I must say Steven Universe cooked so hard with Pearl and her whole struggle of loving Rose but her choosing Greg instead.
Pearl stayed there for her for millennia she tried her best to be there for Rose and impress her and it was all for nothing. Instead, she fell in love with a human that only existed for a minuscule part of her lifetime.
What do you do after that? How do you even recover? And then what do you do when all that’s left of the person you loved the most is her son?
Pearl choosing to stay and raise Steven despite the heartbreak is such a pure show of love. She loved Rose so much, she knew how much she wanted that life and she respected it bc she loved her.
Goddammit it’s so good so good.

Greg Bryk was in episode 25 of Podcast141, co-hosted by Marwen Heni, Mars Lipowski, and Jim Boeven, to talk about his acting career in general, but also and mostly his role as Joseph Seed in Far Cry 5.
Since he’s already shared a lot of anecdotes in interviews and live videos on Instagram, I thought I wouldn’t learn anything new... but I did, so here’s a summary of what he said about his experience playing the Father.
We knew that the dev team (he specifically mentioned Dan Hay and Drew Holmes) had struggled to find the “right” actor for the role, but what I don’t remember ever hearing before is that, after two years of unsuccessful search, the project was almost cancelled for this reason!
Thankfully, that was when Greg Bryk auditioned. He had already said the script they gave him (and that he thought was “amazing”) was what became Joseph’s monologue in the mission “We Must Be Strong”, but he gave more details about what was originally in it. In this early version of his backstory, Joseph was 23 years old and working two jobs to support his family. One night, exhausted, he fell asleep on the couch as his pregnant wife went out to get ice cream. He was then awoken by a knock on the door, told she had been in an accident, and taken to the hospital. The rest of the story is what he says in Far Cry 5: when he arrives, his wife is dead, their premature daughter is “stuffed with tubes”, he hears God’s calling, and understands he has to make this sacrifice.
So he got the role, and when they called him again to record a sermon (my guess is it was this one, but I’m just speculating), he saw what the game looked like and thought everything and everyone was “incredible”. Over time, as they got to know him, they even changed the character and partly rewrote the Father specifically for him.
The team was also very accommodating. For example, the scenes are usually shot in the huge performance capture studio, but for the Heralds’ eulogies, which are much more intimate, they built a small room so he felt like he actually had something around him instead of a big, empty space.
A day before the game came out, the cutscenes were already available online and he watched some of them. He was very impressed by the last eulogy (or, as he calls it, “snot monologue”) in particular because of how “vivid” and “human” it felt. It brought tears to his eyes and he recalls his wife was “blown away”; it was “special”.
As for the fans, he thinks they’ve been very supportive and welcoming. Some have told him they felt heard and seen by Joseph, and he believes it’s because he’s a character who loves people for who they are. At this point, he and the co-hosts agreed that being an actor was a gift because it gives an opportunity to make people’s lives better, especially in video games because there’s a unique connection that doesn’t really exist in movies or TV series.
Marwen Heni mentioned that, while most villains want you to hate them, Joseph, on the contrary, wanted you to reflect and think that he might be right. Greg Bryk admitted that he believed everything he said, especially about family and technology. Sometimes, people are isolated or only have online connections, so having someone tell them, “I see you and I love you for what you are” is powerful. In his opinion, this message resonated with a lot of players because it’s a simple truth and we all want to be part of a family.
Joseph doesn’t control his followers with fear, Marwen Heni commented, but with devotion, and that too makes him compelling. As he was playing Far Cry 5, he started questioning whether or not he (as the Deputy) was right for opposing the Father, which is something Greg Bryk says he saw a lot in comments. He believes there’s “an intimacy to the relationship” between Joseph and the player, a “seduction” in the sense that we all want to belong. He’s humbled by the impact his work had on people.
When asked if he would be open to reprising the role, this time, he answered, “Absolutely”. In fact, and this is news to me, he revealed there were discussions about turning Far Cry into a TV show, and the different games would have been standalone seasons. That said, he added that, at a certain point, it’s necessary to let characters go and that he was grateful for what he had already experienced playing the Father.
Marwen Heni then asked if Joseph, who is very complex, was entirely fictional or if it was Greg talking through him. He answered his characters are always him, to a degree, because he wants to connect with the material so he never lies and can work from things that matter to him. He never judges them and tries to think about what he wants to express through them. He’s interested in their humanity and what motivates them. “We’re all broken,” he said. “Some are much more broken than others, and sometimes those broken pieces are very sharp and jagged, and they lash out.”
He also revealed he had “very specific rituals” to help him become a character and then let them go. He mentioned a few prayers that one of his friends, who is a Wiccan, taught him. In fact, and all the co-hosts agreed, it can be very hard to “disconnect” from a character sometimes because actors aren’t just pretending; they’re using real emotions.
He had already said his son Dempsey had done the mocap for John and Jacob in the Collapse DLC and that he felt carrying Ethan’s body in New Dawn was a way for him to honor his “boy”, his dead dog Lucky, since he deeply regretted that he couldn’t be there to take him to the veterinarian the day he passed. What I didn’t know, however, is that it was Greg himself who had asked if Joseph could carry Ethan, and the team made it happen. He also explained that, when it was time to play this scene, he tried to imagine what it would be like to actually lose his son.
But who is Greg Bryk’s favorite Far Cry villain? Well, when he auditioned and started researching the franchise, he was interested in Vaas because of Michael Mando’s performance. He still doesn’t know him personally but has a friend who worked with him and who spoke about “how electrifying his talent was”. There’s something “unhinged” and “primal” to him as a performer; he’s a “wild” and “special” actor.
Finally, when told he was born to play Joseph, he confessed he felt he was indeed “called” to play this part but wants to give credit to Dan Hay, Drew Holmes, and Jean-Sébastien Décant for creating such a “terrifyingly human” antagonist in the first place.

Notes from the Taskmaster 16x10 recording
The last two episode recordings I went to, I meant to make comprehensive notes when I got home afterwards that I would be able to look back at and post when the episode aired. I did not, in fact, end up doing that. So this time I was determined to have lots of notes, and made them on the go in the breaks in recording. However. They were made in a rush and I never went back through them to pad them out (you'd really think I would have learned by now). So instead of just having to rely on my memory, I ended up with an almost coded list of words and phrases that it's taken me pretty much 2 weeks to sit down and decipher lol. So with that said:
the pre-episode Greg-Alex entertainment was Greg getting Alex to sing a song about a recent news story to the tune of a song suggested by the audience - in this case it was Trump's lawsuit (the one in May 2023 since there are...a few) to the tune of Wuthering Heights
Alex really went for the whole live thing, and was constantly referring to it throughout the episode
when the contestants came onstage, I obviously first saw Sam in his bright colours and blond hair
we were right on the back balcony and my first impression from that distance was that he kinda looked like Jamie Laing lol
Greg made a passing comment about how he's been dressing in grey but I was completely taken by surprise when the vt rolled and he looked completely different!
I had assumed he'd actually buzzed his hair and didn't realise it was a wig until the ep aired
Sue made comments throughout the episode about how Sam looked like Dahmer
Lucy's prize task story, unsurprisingly, went on for ages and included a whole story about the holiday they went on that I tragically cannot remember
I was so glad they didn't cut 'untaffled' because I looked through my notes before again before watching the episode and couldn't for the life of me remember what she'd said
Greg's said that his immediate response to naked Alex in the prize task was that he was 'smooth like an eel'
After Julian's prize task there was a discussion about how people wanted to be buried, and at one point (I wish I could remember the conversation leading up to this) either Greg or Alex said they would be buried 'together forever in the Victoria monument'
There was a whole long debate about whether Sam intended to use nature as part of his doughnut task, and whether the bird toppling Ms Doughnut to her death should be counted
Greg told Sam to 'convince me to give you 3 points'
Sam went on talking about how amazing nature is and how we're all connected and at one point said 'consider the statistics.....3000' (I'm 99% sure this is what he said and I didn't just forget the rest of the quote)
Julian's exercise name was absolutely not a one-off, to the point they started running a 'cunt count' for the episode
Sue talked about how she had recently had an ADHD diagnosis, and that she kept viewing tasks holistically rather than paying attention to the details. This was specifically in relation to the exercise where she just did the same thing 4 times
I'm not sure if we saw the full extended version of Hotel Taskmaster, but we definitely saw a cut that included more than the aired version (though tbh I think they do that for most tasks and I just noticed this one bc we got the extended version)
We got an 'I put it to you' from Greg that Alex-as-Qrs looked genuinely cool
Lucy described Alex as having 'tight metallic buns' which Greg later referred to as his 'robot arse'
I cannot stress how much of a breakdown Susan had in the studio about the forks and marbles - you get a glimpse in the episode but that was nothing!
Susan also took AGES to do her throw in the live task - she kept on being about to throw before being interrupted, or saying her arms were too short, or that she needed a wee, or having a fit of giggles, and the longer it went the worse it got lol
Greg and Alex also had a go at it, and Sue wanted another go without the pressure. Greg and Sue got the ball in but Alex didn't
Don't ask me to remember the context, but at one point during the record, Greg told a story about someone he knew (whose name he said he would tell the others backstage) who would have sex in a cow mask and would demand 'LOOK AT ME!!!'. Anyway that was referred back to a few times in the ep
When Sam was given the trophy he just stood near-motionless with it for what felt like ages before we got to the hugs and everything
And now we enter the magical world of ~what on earth was this note referring to~ where I just hope someone else who was there (@politicalprocrastinator how's your memory?) sees this and can fill me in on what I've forgotten:
At some point around the prize / first task I wrote 'correct dog guess'. Whose dog? What was being guessed? Absolutely no idea
At some point there was a joke about the 'former Prime Minister', I think the idea being that by the time the episode aired we'd inevitably have a new PM? but I honestly can't remember
Someone called someone else submissive in a way notable enough for me to have written 'submissive' as a one-word bullet point, but not notable enough for me to actually remember
And now three bullet points which I will present in their original form:
Birthday
Bum hole in back
Get in bath

(TMI: It never ceases to amaze me what is possible in this game without poses. It gives me the feeling that it's 'real', if you know what I mean? If I'd set it all up with poses and staged everything, I wouldn't have that much fun as watching them coming up with their own stuff. I never have the feeling I'm actually 'writing' this story. I just tell it. In the upcoming episodes there is so much happening that started months and years ago and back then I didn't know why it happened and I didn't have a proper explanation, but some days I see future scenes and episodes and then I'm so surprised - and then it all makes sense all out of sudden. Like it has already happened so often. With Greg and Jack, for example. Or I would have never been able to bring Jack and Kiyoshi together again if I actually had to 'make it up'. I knew they are together as adults, but I never saw a way back for them - until it happened naturally. It's utterly stunning to be able to experience this in my old age, you have no idea. And that's the reason why I'm so obsessed with them, it's still exciting and thrilling for me whenever I log in to watch them. ö.ö)

Taskmaster Recording Report
This will be a long post and it has spoilers, so proceed with caution. More after the cut.
I will put in two different sections, what happened on warm-up and between takes and what they cut from the episode and I remember. WARM UP
Greg told people to stop sending sexy DMs because he would disappoint all the ladies/some guys.
He introduced Alex who came to the stage and hugged Greg's...knees?
Greg told the audience Alex was a master and could mimic any animal doing a dance style. He did a guinea pig first and it was the cutest thing, then a wolf (there is a picture of this that was used on a press release) and then a lion. When Greg asked about a dance style I yelled SAMBA with all my strength and then I saw Alex trying to samba as a lion. It was amazing.
Mark Olver asked who came from furthest to watch it and I raised my hand and said Brazil and he said BULLSHIT, you didn't come here just for that. I then explained I also was going to see Tim Key in Cardiff the next day and he was like "Oh..she did came here just for that then"
Again British people can't understand my name so I was referred as "Brazil" for the rest of the afternoon
I was also questioned about how do I watch the show and I quickly replied Youtube .
He made me list my favorite contestants to see if I could stay in the country. I tried to think which contestants were on the YouTube series uploaded. I then said Bob Mortimer, Mike Wozniak and Mark Watson (Alex smiled a bit when I said his name). Olver went " I can't believe someone in Brazil was watching the Woz fart a pile"
When I was telling I am from Brazil Alex waved at me and I was sure he knew who I was because long story short a bunch of friends really made me feel special and got me a signed book by Alex and he knew I was going to be there after travelling for 14+ hours.
At that point Greg said "Did you come for me???" and I pathetically went YES Y ES YES. He waved at me and IDK till today how I survived this.
They joked about a guy being first row and not being a fan,Mark asked who he had to fuck to get those seat and greg was pointing to himself.
They said we were clapping at the wrong places and that would confuse Alex and Greg
After the recording when I got back to London randomly meet Asim Chaudhry on Leceister Square. He was so sweet. We chatted a bit , I talked about how Sandman was big here, and that he had Brazilian fans and he got very excited and telling his mates about it
STUDIO
Sue got a massive round of applause. I think she and Julian got the big whoops from the crowd
The prize task was so much longer. Lucy went for ages talking about the ghost of the dog, and Greg kept asking questions. I knew most of it would be cut, but Greg kept mentioning during the episode and made me question how they would edit the references. They are bloody genius those editors.
Sam's Pinocchio made quite the impression, and Greg had a lot of fun with it. They talk about Pinocchio's penis, there was questions if it grew too with the lies. And Greg kept saying Pinocchio during the recording.
Sue's monkey orgy story was longer too.
When they showed Sam getting super closer to Alex, Greg mentioned Alex was very uncomfortable with touch and to prove that he got really touchy. BTW guys the amount of hand touches, and whispers behind the cards...they are insane
After the team task they were basically talking about how kinky it was, and Greg joked about Alex tied up , hogtie style and that he enjoyed. This was the thing I was most excited and I hope they put on the outtakes because I know how the fandom will be mental about it.
Greg is...MAGNETIC! Like the man demands attention and is very hard to not be looking at him. I kept looking at them at the studio and mostly ignored the tasks because I knew that I could see them later.
The live task took ages to set up and to reset after every round, Greg even joked we would spend the night there. It was more or less 3 hours of taping.
Greg interacted with us a lot because they had to reset the seesaw all the time, At one point he asked us to go "oooooh" that was show in the episode but he asked Alex using those words "Do you want the audience to oooh you while you pull it out slowly for me?" and he said with such a voice that...if I were a dude I would have a boner.
There was a point when Alex had to explain the outcome and he got it wrong and the audience corrected him to Greg's delight, he was very giggly. Sue got quite mad at Alex and the chains.
I guess it was this. At least that is what I took from my notes.

i have also recently been thinking phil would be a perfect taskmaster contestant-
1) he loves puzzles and to be assigned A Task
2) he would vibe well with finding ways to define the tasks outside of the first level of meaning
3) he would be so bad at the physical challenges
4) he would have a lot of biting the non-existent glue lid moments
ALL OF THIS IS HOWEVER IRRELEVANT! the most important reason he should be on TM is that:
5) he is *exactly* the Taskmasters Type (impish twink with an unpredictably absurdist sense of humor) (see: sam campbell, mike wozniak, mae martin) and i think it would be amazing to see him flirt five points out of an absolutely captivated Greg Davies each and every prize task.
phil is a guy who Loves being put in a situation
(if phil is on taskmaster we need a Live Dan Reaction for it please please im on my knees)
categorizing mike wozniak as an impish twink is probably the funniest thing i've ever read and you are so right for it
phil's prize tasks would be incredible because he'd find something stupidly sentimental and absolutely win the audience's hearts over it, whilst the very next episode he's tasked with taking the most embarrassing photo and it's just a screenshot of his eating glue youtube video with 1.4 million views
phil's casual delivery whilst saying wild things is my favourite and i'd love to watch his earnesty break alex horne. greg would get a kick out of how tall he is while being so clumsy.
11/10 i need to see it

Fictional characters that definitely deserved better
Tumblr media
💪Jen Walters (She-Hulk: Attorney at law)💪
She-Hulk is one of those shows I enjoyed because of the vibes, no surprise that a bunch of dudebros were doing their usual hate on the MCU crap again, especially going after this show.
I like how the show made Jennifer relatable and likable from the start, Tatiana did such a amazingly performance as the titular character along with matching her sassiness and wit like she have in the comics.
The possibilities of She-Hulk season 2 are slim to none, but I still have hope of Jen coming back in the future.
Tumblr media
🛩️Andy Demayo (Steven Universe)🛩️
Even though he was kinda rude in his debut episode, but honestly, you would be confused and angry too if you see a bunch of strangers in your barn.
Besides Greg and the residents at Beach City, he rarely calls out Steven's dangerously daily lifestyle with the gems and shows that he cares about his recently known nephew.
After Gem harvest, he resolved the bittered distance and continue visiting his family, even showing at Garnet's wedding.
It was kind of a waste that Future didn't give him anything important to add, he would connect and helped Steven's dilemma with the fear of change, similar to his.
Also a hilarious fun fact, Andy's VA is Carl from Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
Tumblr media
🐁Splinter (TMNT 2012)🐁
Honestly one of the most tragic characters in the show, from a broken man who lost everything, to a loving and protecting father who found a new lease on life, along with a family that care for each other to the very end.
He can be strict but he does care about his family and would die fighting for them, he literally died to save them and would do it again if he have to.
Hoon Lee's electrifying portrayal speaks for itself and the critical juncture of his past that parallels him and Shredder is another reason why the show is underrated.
I hate the backlash that this character has been getting and that people are labeling him as a bad father but he's not, the show literally has moments of him caring and protecting his family from danger.
Tumblr media
🕸️Miles Morales (Spider-Man)🕸️
Without a doubt, Miles is one of the best Spider-Man characters of all. Pretty disgusting that people are using with the whole Miles Morales is Miles Morales crap to hate on a character that brings a new meaning for a iconic role model for kids.
Into and Across the Spider-verse done a outstanding job, making Miles's personal journey and growth so emotional and inspiring.
Sucks that the third film is going to take a long time to premiere, but at least the PS4 games also give him justice and continues shining Miles.
Miles Morales will forever be one of the best Spider-man, it just sucks that some people won't accept him continuously, but in some way at least there's some people who actually respect him as a character, knowing that he is in forever will be Spider-Man and that makes it him amazing.
Tumblr media
📋Lois Lane (My Adventures with Superman)📋
My Adventures with Superman is a show that should be talked about especially on how well written it is, the show adapted Lois very well, along with her budding romance with Clark.
I literally hated how Lois gets treated like garbage by a certain amount of people after the whole secret identity thing, the show does prove that Lois is flawed and complex in a good way, making her likable and relatable, she makes mistakes but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing, everyone does.
The latest episode of season 2 really proves that Lois is a good character, showing her empathetic past and complicated relationship with her dad.
Also, Alice Lee's fun performance as the character is just top notch, whether she's happy or sad, she just nails Lois's character without a doubt.

🧬Morty Smith (Rick and Morty)🧬
This boy has been through enough, with neglectful parents, a sister that does care about him but is focused on her own life, Rick cares sometimes, but can be a real jerk. Morty is more you can be his own person the truth is some things can be holding him back, mostly his grandfather.
I'm glad that Rick is trying to change for the better, I remember I hated the way he treated Morty thoughout the seasons whether using verbal or physical abuse, it also sucks when he tried to do something good yet the universe basically just throws it back at him like a giant middle finger.
I'm glad that the later seasons proves that Morty could be a badass and he can handle himself, but I hope when the new season drops, they find a way to handle his trauma because he deserves a hug.
Tumblr media
🎳Wade Whipple (The Sonic franchise)🎳
The Sonic films are underrated but it's problem is that it gets dunked on, especially thanks to a so-called outside of the box thinker.
But unlike the other live action films with bland and boring human characters, the human characters in Sonic are actually likable and memorable, among them is Wade Whipple.
I really don't think he's one of the worst characters in Sonic, honestly his sister and dad deserves to be on that list.
Honestly people hate him just because he have more screen time than Knuckles but one, because it's a TV show budget and Knuckles is in the show, they are acting like he never was in the show.
Two, at least it added layers and flaws that made him even more relatable and serves a purpose to Knuckles's journey.
Like with Tom and Maddie with Sonic, his friendship with Knuckles is another core example of why Knuckles work and his actor, Adam Pally's performance was great too.
Tumblr media
🔪Sam Carpenter (Scream 5 and 6)🔪
Sam is another character that deserves more attention and respect than before, partially thanks to her actress.
Aside her rough past and learning the dark truth about her family, Sam cares about the people she loves and isn't afraid to fight for them, even fighting her own personal demons just to do so.
Melissa Barrera is a underrated actress, though Her performance in part 5 was good, I think she was just basically outperformed by everyone else, and it didn't help that she was getting bullied and criticize by bunch of toxic fans.
Scream 6 gave Sam justice and proves that she's a badass final girl, especially thanks to the crew and cast of the films who care and was there for her but thanks to a certain company that fire her for doing the right thing, what's the point of even watching Scream 7 without her and the core four but the good thing is at least it gave her and Sam a bittersweet ending.
Tumblr media
🐝Chloe Bourgeois (Miraculous Ladybug)🐝
This one is a completely personal rant, I used to be a fan Miraculous. But after watching the season 3 finale, I feel like the magic of the show just basically disappeared, and seasons 4 and 5 was a huge sign that the show fully gone off the rails.
I remember hating Chloe in the first season and I'm pretty sure everyone else felt the same feeling too, but season 2 actually did the the most surprising thing, actually gave her some character development.
It might be baby steps but still development, she might have been spoiled and selfish sometimes but they actually do show that she has flaws.
Malediktator was one of the best episodes of season 2, they were able to showcase Chloe's vulnerability and it prove that she can change and still be a useful ally like the other miraculous holders.
She protected her friend from getting akumatized again, she almost got Mayura's miraculous, and heck, She literally defied Hawkmoth's control, unlike the other akumatized victims, that is basically spells hero-worthy.
But of course as always, Thomas is just too spiteful and that thinks that Chloe is not just worthy and replaced her with a bland, forgettable and useless character who only exists just because she is "better" than Chloe.
It's honestly just pathetic that her corrupt father who spoils her and the literal villain of the show, who done some horrible and awful things get a redemption arc, but a literal misunderstood child doesn't, it just proves that the writer's room just don't even know how to handle character development nor redemption arcs.
It's even more sad that the film actually treats Chloe better than the show does.
The truth is whether do you like or don't like Chloe, it's possible that she can change, it's just that Thomas is the actual problem of the show, I hope one day somehow Chloe might actually get a actual chance to shine as a character again but maybe in the future it could still could happen.

My Top 10 Young Justice Ships
Hey y’all! Here’s a new little series I’m doing, where I give you my top ships from series that I’m a fan of! I’ll drop a poll sometime soon of which fandom you want me to do next! @imsparky2002 @artzychic27
1. SPITFIRE. Forever and always. Wally and Artemis were such an amazing couple, and the ending of season 2 will always make me cry like a baby. They complimented each other so well and balanced one another out. Don’t get me wrong, I like Artemis’ new BF, he seems nice, but…he’s not Wally…
2. Blue13. We may not get to see much of them, but damn it they made Jaime and Traci’s dynamic so cute and I wanted to see more!!! They had this easy rapport that was so sweet and funny! (Also we were ROBBED when they didn’t show us Jaime reacting to Traci taking part in the Dr. Fate deal. I mean, how similar is that situation to him being put on mode?!)
3. Zetaflash. I. Love. These. Two. And I hate that Greg wasn’t allowed to confirm them in the show. (Though I respect the hell out of him for the fact that he made Atlantis as queer as possible in rumored retaliation. 😂) I just loved the exchanges they had in the episodes they were shown, and I’m a sucker for the Straight Man-Zany One dynamic.
4. Kaldur+Wyynde. These two may have been unexpected, but damn if they weren’t beautiful. I love how Wyynde supports Kaldur but also worries for him and tries to get him to slow down a bit before he burns out. Love these two!
5. Forager Squared. Cuteness personified. 10/10. Every moment these two were together was adorable. 🥰 🥰🥰
6. La’Gaan and his partners. Not only do I love the polyamory representation, they have such a wholesome dynamic, and La’Gaan deserved happiness! (Screw you, I’ve always liked him.)
7. WonderStatic. Cassie and Virgil have such a fun dynamic and I loved the hints he had a crush on her. She deserves better after the crap Tim pulled.
8. Zatanna+Rocket. Don’t judge me. They have an awesome dynamic and give off kickass Gf vibes.
9. Gardita. They were sweet together and really seemed happy. Wish they had stayed together.
10. Supermartian. They were adorable in Season 1, and I was happy to see them married at the end of Season 4, but all that mess significantly downgraded them for me.
Leave your thoughts in the comments and reblogs!

Has a future contestant revealed themselves?
I love how amazing Taskmaster fans are at sleuthing things, I just had to share this post.
Fans of Inside No. 9 might remember an episode a few years ago where Steve Pemberton played a crossword setter with the name of Sphinx, and to promote it, the Guardian ran the crossword from the episode under that name on the day it aired. Well today, Sphinx is back in the Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/crosswords/cryptic/29186) and the people over at crossword blog Fifteensquared (https://www.fifteensquared.net/2023/09/27/guardian-cryptic-29186-by-sphinx/) have noticed that if you solve it, you can find a hidden message in the letters that spells out GREG PLEASE GIVE STEVE ALL FIVE POINTS. So could Steve Pemberton be taking part in a future series? Perhaps a task for 'create a hidden message. Best hidden message wins?

I mean this in the best way but watching your slow mental breakdown about crazy ex girlfriend is very entertaining
ok listen. pov you see me, in bed after a long day (crying, stress etc etc), i am finding ways to soothe myself. so what do i do? i go back to my hyperfixations of old i.e. crazy ex girlfriend.
it was an AMAZING show like COME ON there was so much positive representation of so many issues and not even in like a braggy way, they were just people living their lives and rebecca bunch?? oh my god don't even get me STARTED on her she represents me at my darkest times, she makes me feel like i deserve a happy ending, a good life, she makes me feel like i can be BETTER. like oh my god her arc of falling to pieces and then picking herself up again and then slowly stabilising is just so REAL to me and satisfying to watch, her self loathing and then self confidence, her fury, her sadness, her happiness, her strength like oh my goddddd
And ALSO!!! IT'S A GOD DAMN MUSICAL!! An amazing one at that!! it just is so clever and hilarious and witty and real and heart wrenching (to this day i have not managed to watch the very last episode cause i'll never stop crying, it's not a sad ending it just makes me emotional). the main cast is like well-fleshed out, they each get their moment and i genuinely love all of them
crazy ex girlfriend is a wonderful story about a woman who doesn't move to west covina, california to chase her ex boyfriend please watch it
(josh chan frustrates me, i would've loved her to be with greg but i understand why that couldn't happen, NATHANIEL MY BELOVEDDD)
thank you for enabling the rant this has been very enjoyable

I don't know where to start pointing out things I liked from Over the Garden Wall, so I'm going to tell a few, starting from episode 9 and a bit of 10 because I'm like that so obviously there's spoilers
First, the way things start to make sense in Episode 9, it's amazing. The token at the intro is a train and, appart from the obvious, train related things are almost everywhere. Wirt's costume cape being from a train conductor, the train model on top of his bedroom table, the ost having a train leitmotiv. Even the lantern! All an omen to when they almost get run over by the train.
Also on episode 9, you can see Quincy Endicott's tombstone when they hide behind it. (It's pretty close to another one, so I can just guess is Margueritte's Grey)
The cementery being called: Eternal Garden, and they go Over that wall.
Also when it's explained that Greg is an elephant and why he had the pockets full of candy. That he stole a rock for his brother, and that was part of the reason he still had hope.
But in the end is Wirt the first one to awake and save his brother

Succession for the fandom ask! 💙
my favorite female character: shiv!!!
my favorite male character: roman forever
my favorite book/season/etc: probably season 2, it was when i really started loving the show.
my favorite episode (if its a tv show): this is always a difficult question. i love all the season finales. "nobody is ever missing" and "this is not for tears" are probably my favorite two finales, but they're all amazing. other episodes stand out as well, like "austerlitz", "prague", "hunting", "too much birthday", "argestes" etc. etc. the whole fucking show.
my favorite cast member: i love so many of them. maybe brian cox.
my favorite ship: hmm i don't know if i have one. i like plenty of the relationships, i just don't know if i have a favorite.
a character I’d die defending: none of them, they all suck. and yet all of them too. i think the fandom sometimes was pretty misogynistic toward shiv, and i'd defend her from that, if i ever allowed myself to pay attention to the succession fandom beyond my own bubble. i also think logan is sometimes misunderstood or underappreciated as a character.
a character I just can’t sympathize with: i can sympathize with all of them, but i'm still gonna say i don't like greg.
a character I grew to love: i had a hard time liking any of the characters at first, which of course makes sense as they're all horrible people. but i grew to love almost all of them.
my anti otp: i don't have any.

The 1999 Mystery Men movie is now free on YouTube, I guess because Universal finally realized that if no one paid to see it when it came out and so no one remembers it, no one is going to pay $3 to rent it.
Which is a shame (for the people who made the movie, who gives a shit about Universal), because it's good. Based loosely on the Flaming Carrot / Mysterymen indie comics of the 1980s (I'm only familiar Cerberus the Aardvark, which the same company published around the same time), it is meta superhero parody in the style of Gunn's Suicide Squad / Peacemaker, just 20 years before any mainstream American audience would give a crap.
Tumblr media
This is a universe where there is one real superhero, who is so effective that crime is basically non-existent, so that the sole superhero himself is getting bored. When he comes up with a scheme to give himself something to do, it goes badly, unleashing a notorious supervillain on Champion City. When the Mystery Men, obnoxious wannabe heroes with virtually no powers, try to help, they typically fail, but so badly this time that now they are the city's only hope. Will they put petty grievances aside and learn to work together before Cassanova Frankenstein destroys the entire city?
Well, of course they will. It's a superhero movie. The point is watching fun wacky characters bounce off each-other for 2 hours, and this certainly delivers on that. The cast is a who's-who of 1999 charisma, with notable turns by Geoffrey Rush as the scene-chewing, disco-themed Frankenstein, Wes Studi doing Batman if Batman was doing Yoda, and Tom Waits as a benevolent mad scientist with a grandma fetish. Paul Reubens doing a lisp and Kel Mitchell in blonde Sisqo hair are especially fun as a team within a team, farting and getting naked on their path to victory.
Tumblr media
Ben Stiller is the lead, playing a typical Ben Stiller-is-the-lead character, the kind of well-intentioned but self-absorbed incompetent that is charming when Ben Stiller plays him in movies, but everyone would despise in real life. And if you are a person who also isn't a fan of him doing this in movies, you'll also not like it, here. I like Ben Stiller doing this, but Roy here really is a useless pain in the ass until the very end.
There are lots of Gunn-type sitcom jokes about superhero tropes and general goofiness, and similar tonal shifts between slapstick comedy and people being slowly melted. Fans of The Boys will enjoy Greg Kinnear as a G-rated Homelander, complete with product placement on his costume.
Tumblr media
It is about 20 minutes too long at 2 hours, and has way too many annoying closeup 90s fight scenes with mediocre choreography. More scenes of just the cast improving should have replaced a lot of this, because this is what the movie is really about. And there is some amazing 1998 CG that is used well, but man. It looks like what it is, certainly.
Props on someone greenlighting a superhero parody movie in a world where the only things to make fun of were the Schumacher Batman movies (Blade, the first "real" Marvel movie, came out the same year as Mystery Men). But it is obvious that only hardcore comic book nerds were going to connect with this, and there were not enough of them, outside of the big mainline "event" comic speculator market of the 90s, to make up for a $68 million budget.
This was made specifically for a movie-going public that has fallen in love with good superhero movies, then gotten sick of them, and appreciates someone making fun of them in a smart way. That is a thing we barely have now, in 2024. Mystery Men the big budget movie really is a thing that was just 20+ years ahead of its time. Watching it feels like watching an episode of Peacemaker that is intentionally aping the style and production design of Batman Forever. I suppose it is worth seeing, just for that.
Also the 90s Hollywood cameos. Dane Cook shows up, unfortunately. No, he isn't funny. He is a "superhero" who burns people with a waffle iron. I realize that may sound funny, but believe me, it isn't when Dane Cook does it.
See for yourself. That scene is in the original Smashmouth video for "All Star". Because that song being from the Mystery Men soundtrack before Shrek is literally all most people know about this movie.
youtube
And that's not fair to it. Go watch it.
