My review of The Empire Strips Back: A Burlesque Parody

So I went to a star wars burlesque show. Admittedly I have nothing to compare it to as I'd never been to a burlesque show before, but I had SO much fun. Like. I was hoarse from cheering the whole time and my sides were sore from laughter. So I'd totally recommend it based on the experience I had.

The highlights for me:

The opening act: To the tune of Need You Tonight by INXS. A dancer rides in on a Tauntaun (Like. Not animatronic, it was controlled by a person? But there may have been animatronics involved. Admittedly I was not looking at the Tauntaun closely 😅) She's in full Hoth winter gear. She takes everything off piece by piece, starting with her hat and goggles, climbs down and does a slow strip tease while periodically interacting with the Tauntaun (petting it, rubbing noses with it, etc.) At one point she turns her back to the audience and 'flashes' the Tauntaun, causing it to make an AWOOGA type reaction and then it falls over dead. She proceeds to finish the strip tease til it's just bra and panties. She seductively saunters over to the Tauntaun, sits down at it's belly, REACHES IN and pulls out like. a bundle of felt entrails 🤣 Covers her torso with it, yanks off the bra and tosses it aside. SONG OVER LIGHTS OUT CURTAIN CLOSE. I mean I was all in when she started dancing, but that was like OH this is BURLESQUE it's sexy AND funny.

My favorite act was a dancer in full Jedi robes, with a light saber, dancing and using the light saber to 'cut' pieces of her robes off.

My husbands favorite was a dancer dressed as Luke washing a land speeder to the tune of Star Ships by Nicki Minaj. The dance started with her in the land speeder, then climbing out, getting a bowl and sponge, washing it, and eventually she ended up on the hood of the speeder and dumped the water all over herself

(interestingly enough, my friend also saw the show with her husband on a different night, and his favorite was the land speeder car wash too. Either a straight guy thing or she and I just married very similar men 🤣)

All the dancers were women except for a male dancer dressed as Han Solo. He did a strip tease to Smooth Criminal. He did an amazing job. Lots of jerk off motions and michael jackson crotch grabs. It started with him stumbling out of the frozen carbonite and ended with him in a thong.

There were imperial soldiers but they had nothing on under their robes, Storm troopers in mostly fishnets with very little armor (it came off when Darth Vader joined them on stage) a very seductive and slow dance with two twi'leks removing each other's clothes. Leia doing a slow seductive dance in her robes and then a faster raunchy strip tease that ended with R2D2 shooting money out onto her (notably there was not a slave Leia number, though I have seen photos of it at other performances in the past). Han and Chewie doing a dance together that disappointingly did not result in any clothing removed but it had very homoeroticism of buddy comedies vibes (Chewie tops, apparently). C3P0 on a rotating platform as Jawas stripped off allll the plating (dancer was in a skin suit that had circuit-looking twinkly flashing lights on all the seductive parts once all the plating was removed). Boba Fett stripping to Welcome to the Jungle and finishing by shooting a T-shirt canon.

And the whole thing was emceed by a guy dressed as Lando and he was SO funny. Like stand up comedy in between acts. great stuff

No ACTUAL nudity, but like. It got pretty close. Pasties and thongs galore.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something but the dancers were talented (I don't know much about dancing but I could definitely see signs that they were ballet trained) the costumes were incredible, the props and lighting were high quality, the jokes were hilarious and raunchy, and everyone had a great time. The theater was packed and the ushers got to carry light sabers. Also the merch was chefs kiss. We got the Wookie-rotica magazine which is like. Classic 70s playboy but with star wars. There are fake ads and everything.

So basically. Idk go to this show if it's on in your city??? I think there might be different performers in different cities and the acts might be different. But wow it was so good

Last night, at the Boston opening night for The Empire Strips Back (Star Wars burlesque, naturally), I took a moment to look around, trying to remember if I'd been in this theater before.

Then it hits me: the last time I was in the Huntington Theater, Carrie Fisher was doing her one-woman show, Wishful Drinking. At a key point in the show, she goes into a monologue about an actor's dignity and fandom and that's when the Princess Leia blow-up doll comes down from the ceiling.

So now, there's nothing for it, except to swear a vow that I shall never enter the Huntington Theater unless the performance contains both sex and Star Wars.

Went to see The Empire Strips back with my friend the other day and had a blast! It was literally the best time I've had in a long time.
