Ooh, Lily, what did you think of the Bikeriders soundtrack? Being a music expert I'm sure you've heard most of the songs before, but I wasn't familiar with any and now I'm listening nonstop. What other songs would you add to a playlist?
Hello, Lee! 💝 That is so kind of you to send me this message and that you remembered my degree 😅🥰🤭
I really liked the soundtrack — in fact, I googled it right after watching the movie because I haven't known all of the songs either!
I am very glad they used the songs by The Shangri-Las because they suit the vibe so so much and after all their most popular song is about a motorbike driver 🛵
If I was in the charge of making this soundtrack, I'd consider adding these tunes: ➡ "You Should Have Seen The Way He Looked At Me" by The Dixie Cups (the scene with Benny and Kathy, hello???) ➡ "He's a Rebel" or "Heartbreaker" by The Crystals ➡ "Johnny Cool" by Peggy March ➡ "Devil's Gotten Into My Baby" by Devotions ➡ "He's a Doll" by The Honeys ➡ "S.P.C.L.G. (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Little Girls" by Betty Everett & The Society Girls (gives me a vibe of the female bikers or something) ➡ "I Wanna Be a Winner" by Vickie & The Van Dykes ➡ "My Boyfriend's Back" by The Angels
There are probably even more amazing songs but those are the ones I had on the top of my mind 🥰🌈

cruel summer
genre: fluff, angst au: non-idol au warnings: none word count: 0.5k pairing: gn!reader x lee minho song: cruel summer by taylor swift mini series: cruel summer // august // betty // cardigan // the 1 a/n: the reader in this is not the same reader as betty or cardigan. this reader is minho’s summer friend.
DEVILS ROLL THE DICE, ANGELS ROLL THEIR EYES.
The soda can lands against the door of the vending machine with a thunk. When you bend down to grab it, you ask Minho again, “You sure you don't want anything? I can pay for you, you know.”
As expected, he replies, “I’m good. Pier or beach?”
“Pier.”
You walk side-by-side with him and take special care to not look at him. You’re not supposed to look at him. Not even when the sunset is in your eyes, when there’s nowhere else to turn your head. You’re just friends. Friends don’t look at each other the way you look at him.
You keep your gaze steady on the wooden planks. You feel every bump and whorl under your sneakers. Through the slats, you watch the tides lap at the sand, desperate to make it farther than the dark border painted on by their predecessors. It would be so easy if friendship had an easily discernible line. At least you would know if you were toeing it. Instead, you have to rely on instincts and hope that you’re on the safe side. The right side. But the more time you spend with Minho, the more you want to leap over the blurry gray area and into definitive love.
“What are you thinking about?”
“Nothing,” you say too quickly. When he snorts, you admit, “You.”
“Me?”
It’s only one syllable, but you hear his amusement curling around it like smoke. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, but Minho has always been good at luring you to the flames. You’ll make a joke, he’ll laugh at it, you’ll take another step into forbidden territory.
“Yeah,” you reply. You lean against the metal railing and finally crack open your can of soda. “Why are you always chewing bubble gum?”
He chuckles and shoves his hands into the pockets of his jeans to search for his pack of gum. Another question you could have asked: “Why do you insist on wearing jeans in the summer?”
“I’m not chewing gum right now,” he says. “I don’t know. Gives my mouth something to do, I guess. Want one?”
While you shake your head, he takes one for himself. With the same amusement in his voice, he says, “I bet you’re just jealous ‘cause you can’t blow bubbles.”
“That’s not true.”
“I’ve never seen you do it before. Do it now.”
He doesn’t know about the smoke in his voice and its effects on you. You feel it tugging at your wrists and almost take a stick of gum. Instead, you catch yourself in time and lamely answer, “I should drink my soda before it goes flat.”
“Knew it. Watch this.”
Like he commands, you watch with tamed envy as the pink bubble between his lips gradually expands. It would be so easy to make the wrong choice right now, to kiss the other side bubble and pray that he doesn’t pull away when it pops.
So, so easy.
WHAT DOESN’T KILL ME MAKES ME WANT YOU MORE.

OC Interviews
I was tagged by @corvosattano to do this fun lil game with some ocs!! Thank you!! Here you will find some info you probably don't need to know about Bianca, Anabel, Nonia, and Carmine!!
Name: Bianca Andretti
Nickname: Bee (given to her by Holland in Nice Guys verse, given to her by Bennett in all other), BB/Bibi (stands for “Better Barbie,” given to her by Ken in her Barbie verse)
Gender: Girl
Star Sign: Pisces sun, Cancer Moon and Rising
Height: 5’1
Orientation: Bi
Nationality/Ethnicity: From US with Italian and Mexican heritage.
Fave Fruit: Bananas. Especially in combination with strawberry.
Fave Season: Spring!! When all the winter is going away, new green grass and plants begin to grow back, baby animals being born…new beginnings!!
Fave Flower: Lily of the valley and bluebells!!
Fave Scent: Normal smells that normal people like I'd say vanilla, lemon, and lavender. Weirdo smells that Bianca loves would be fuel (gasoline, racing, diesel), the smell of mechanic (iykyk), and antiseptic.
Coffee, Tea, or HC: None!! Bianca is an energy drink person.
Average Hours of Sleep: While working as a nurse, Bianca can get anywhere from 12 to 3 hours of sleep, depending on her shifts. When she stops working in some verses, I'd say like averaging on 9.
Dog or Cat Person: Bianca likes all animals, but she's more of a dog person. Something about the stereotypical loyalty of a dog. And I'm toying with the idea of giving her, Holland, and Holly a dog in the Nice Guys Verse!!
Dream Trip: Japan!! She loves the culture, legitimately and not in a weeaboo way, and while she can take a trip to Little Tokyo any time, it's certainly not the same.
Favourite Fictional Character: Ironically, Barbie. That's why she dyed her hair blonde in the first place!! That's also why it's exceptionally funny that she has a Barbie verse in which Ken refers to her as “Better Barbie.”
Number of Blankets They Sleep With: Usually just one, unless she's absolutely freezing. Or if her partner wants a second one.
Random Fact: It's ambiguous to the audience, the characters, and to me whether or not Bianca actually has family in the mafia. It's kind of a running joke. I like to keep it a mystery to even myself. The answer is probably no, but she may lie about it for kicks. If she is lying…
Name: Anabel Lee
Nickname: Bel, Queen of the Hells, The Devil's Bride
Gender: Girl
Star Sign: Aquarius sun, Cancer moon, Sagittarius rising
Height: 5’1
Orientation: Bi
Nationality/Ethnicity: Tiefling?? If that's what an ethnicity is in BG3 LMAOOO
Fave Fruit: She will go so crazy for some cherries.
Fave Season: Summer!! It's warm, it's free, it's the time of year to wear revealing clothing!!
Fave Flower: Spider lilies! I'm sure there are more exotic flowers in the DnD world, but of this world she'd love spider lilies.
Fave Scent: Cherry, smoke, apple cinnamon, and Raphael's perfume.
Coffee, Tea, or HC: Tea, although she doesn't drink it too often.
Average Hours of Sleep: While adventuring around Faerun it was probably like 6 or less, but now with Raph she sleeps as much as she wants. 12+ if she so chooses.
Dog or Cat Person: Both, but cats slightly more. They fit her vibe more.
Dream Trip: I don't know about every location in the Forgotten Realms (still learning lol) but she definitely wants to explore every horrible inch of the Hells with Raphael.
Favourite Fictional Character: I don't know what kind of fictional characters are in DnD, but I think she'd love Betty Boop in our world.
Number of Blankets They Sleep With: None. It's hot in Hell, and you've seen how they sleep in this game. No blankets like weirdos.
Random Fact: In her original verse, Anabel was an angel that got kicked out of heaven because she was so annoying, and the piercings she has are shards of her halo.
Name: Nonia Fonzarelli
Nickname: Buttercup (Reese's peanut buttercup, get it??), Fonzie, Nonnie (she hates this one)
Gender: Girl
Star Sign: Cancer sun, Pisces moon and rising
Height: 5’1
Orientation: Bi
Nationality/Ethnicity: From US with Italian/Indigenous/Mexican heritage
Fave Fruit: Limes and lemons. Give her citrus any day. Give her a Corona and she will drink it with the lime then eat the lime.
Fave Season: Summer!! Racing season is at its peak, it’s warm, there’s a lot of fun to be had in summer.
Fave Flower: Buttercup, daffodil, and anything yellow.
Fave Scent: Leather, cigarette smoke, Reese’s cologne, fuel (gasoline, diesel, racing), the smell of mechanic (iykyk)
Coffee, Tea, or HC: Coffee if she has to choose, but she'd rather not have a hot drink.
Average Hours of Sleep: About 7 to 10.
Dog or Cat Person: Dogs!! They just fit her personality and she has always loved them. I kind of want her and Reese to adopt a mixed breed herding dog when they're ready.
Dream Trip: A Route 66 roadtrip!! All the sightseeing, all the driving…it will be so fun!! (I would know I've been on one)
Favourite Fictional Character: Tweety Bird!! She's a huge Loony Tunes fan, and Tweety has been her favorite since childhood.
Number of Blankets They Sleep With: One or two, and she always needs separate ones from her partner or she’ll take it. Reese doesn't really like Blankets anyway so he's okay with it.
Random Fact: Nonia doesn't just love driving cars, she also loves riding dirtbikes!! She always used to with her dad before her parents moved back to New Jersey.
Name: Carmine Ferrari
Nickname: Carm
Gender: Man
Star Sign: Sagittarius sun, Leo moon, Virgo rising
Height: 6'1
Orientation: Bi
Nationality/Ethnicity: From Canada living in Italy with mixed Italian heritage
Fave Fruit: Oranges!! Give that boy an orange and he will be so happy.
Fave Season: Fall!! A transition to another season, it can be cool or warm, and it's spooky season!!
Fave Flower: Moon flowers!! He didn't know what they were until Fiona showed him and now they're his favorite.
Fave Scent: Lavender, rosemary, chamomile, antiseptic, Fiona's perfume
Coffee, Tea, or HC: Coffee and hot chocolate!! But to be fair, the way he makes coffee is basically hot chocolate anyway...
Average Hours of Sleep: As a med student, it was rare and very short bursts of sleep. Now with a degree and a job, he's working to where he can get at least 8 hours.
Dog or Cat Person: He was one of those "on the fence" people until he met Hewie, now he's team dog all the way.
Dream Trip: Taking Fiona back to his home in Canada. It's not very exciting, but it's pretty different from life in Italy and England she's used to.
Favourite Fictional Character: I want to be very silly and say Jill Valentine. He's a Capcom (fan) character so making him have a Capcom fav is funny, especially since Fiona resembles RE5 Jill and that Haunting Ground was scraps of RE4.
Number of Blankets They Sleep With: Just one, and Fiona tends to steal it, but he doesn't mind
Random Fact: Collects old anatomy books and posters. Fiona thinks it's a bit creepy, but he really finds them interesting.

Trivia and reference Cuphead Comics season 1:
Against Elder Kettle's warnings, the brothers enter the Devil's Casino and begin playing craps.
• It is possible to refer to The Cuphead Show season 3 episode 11,, The Devil and Ms. Chalice" when Cuphead mindlessly ran to the casino like it tempted him and Chalice and Mugman chase after him to stop him.
Cuphead seems to be based on Mickey Mouse and Mugman seems to be based on Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
Elder Kettle may based on the character Mr. Coffeepot from the 1935 Van Beuren cartoon Picnic Panic. Both characters even have cup-like children that they care for.
King Dice is heavily based on Cab Calloway, a famous American jazz singer who notably appeared Betty Boop cartoons with his songs.
• he was the Devil's right-hand man in the game, while in The Cuphead Show he was the Devil's number one
The Devil's design is based on the devil from "Hell's Bells", a short from Silly Symphonies.
• He bears similarities to is Ursula from The Little Mermaid. He strikes deals with people just as Ursula strikes deals with merfolks. (Why do they keep contracts? They probably kicked his ass) Also, he said "Poor unfortunately soul" is referencing to Ursula's song "Poor Unfortunate Souls"
• He is inspired by Hades from Hercules. That's explain his quote "Going once... Going twice.".
• When the Devil is defeated by Cuphead and Mugman, he said "I hate cups" It's referencing to The Cuphead Show.
• In the finale fight, Devil call Henchman is referencing to the Cuphead Show, where starring Henchman, the Devil's assistant.
Legendary Chalice has a habit of being captured by the ghosts in mausoleums everytime. Shan Lee, Werner Werman and Goopy Le Grande telling their about mausoleums and powers named Super Arts.
• Why did they know? Because Goopy has hallucinations when he saw her. Shan Lee was curious about her. And Werner intends to kill her, but misses.
While many believe the names of the Root Pack are "Moe Tato", "Weepy", and "Psycarrot", these are unofficial names created by fans. But now they named their "Sal Spudder", "Ollie Bulb" and "Chauncey Chantenay".
The Root Pack may have been inspired by other anthropomorphic vegetables from cartoons such as The Tears of an Onion (1938) and The Fresh Vegetable Mystery (1939).
• In The Cuphead Show season 1 episode 7 "Root Pack", they are the main antagonists, because they sneak into Elder Kettle's shack, while Cuphead and Mugman have to look after his garden and then they eaten the shack's soil when the two cups catch them.
His name, Goopy Le Grande, means Goopy The Great in Italian.
• "Le Grande" is also a pun on "El Grande" (Spanish for "The Big") and "Le Grand" (French for "The Big").
Goopy Le Grande's design are homages to the Slime, a common enemy and the mascot of Dragon Quest, and cartoons such as Ub Iwer's Balloon Land.
• Cuphead call him Rocky Balboa is referencing to Rocky Balboa, the main character from Rocky starring Sylvester Stallone.
Hilda Berg is connected to Betty Boop and Pearl from Steven Universe.
Her name is a pun on the Hindenburg, an infamous German zeppelin known for its destruction at New Jersey field in 1937.
• Hilda Berg makes an appearance in The Cuphead show season 2 epidoes 2 , "Charmed & Dangerous", where she as cameo. Whereas in Cuphead (my version), she knows them. Plus she knows astrology.
Cagney Carnation is tribute to famous animated flora from the 1932 Disney Silly Symphony cartoon Flowers and Trees through the 1930s and beyond. His first name came from the famous 1930s film star James Cagney.
• Cagney reminds of Flowey the Flower from game Undertale.
Cagney's idle animation in his first phase is a direct reference to the dancing style of a ghost in the 1930 Talkartoon "Swing You Sinner!"
Ribby and Croaks are based on Ryu and Ken from the Street Fighter series
Their color schemes may also have been inspired by the Frog and Toad children's stories by Arnold Lobel.
Ribby and Croaks may have been inspired by the Battletoads.
• Ribby and Croaks are supporting and recurring characters in The Cuphead Show!. They were originally boxing champions, but their mother disapproved of it, since she hate to see her sons boxing each other. So that's why they wearing suits.
• They are the main antagonists in The Cuphead Show episode 3 " Ribby and Croaks". The funny thing is that they fight each other.
Djimmi is based off the Genie from the 1992 Disney film, Aladdin. Actually, some scenes (in my version) refer to Aladdin. For example, "I can't believe it. I'm losing to a cups". Also, Cuphead call him Robbie Williams, who voiced Gienie ( RIP Robbie Williams)
• Many also compare Djimmi to Patrick Star from SpongeBob SquarePants due to his facial expressions and shape.
The pipe in Djimmi's mouth is a mixture of the Calabash pipe (used by Sherlock Holmes portrayed by Basil Rathbone) and the Corncob pipe (commonly used by Popeye the Sailor in all of his cartoons).
Djimmi falls in love with Shan Lee. At first they're friends, but later they're couples.
Shan Lee is daughter of sun goddess. That means she is demigoddess. She prayed to the gods in a Chinese words.
She is inspired by fighting woman in fighter games such as Chun Li from Street Fighter or Li Mei from Mortal Kombat
• Her appearance resembles female Monk from Diablo 3.
Cuphead call her " Tigress". It doesn't bother her because:
• It symbolises bravery and strength, the tiger is known as the king of the beasts throughout Chinese culture.
• It's referencing to Tigress from Kung Fu Panda.
Her phase 2 with pose references to disney movie 1998 Mulan, where Mulan fighting Shan Yu.
Beppi's name is a reference to Tito Beppi, a clown portrayed by Lon Chaney in the 1928 film Laugh, Clown, Laugh.
• He reminds of Pennywise, the main antagonists of Stephen King's novel and Horror movie ,,It"
He said ,,Why so serious? " is refence to Dark Knight, when Joker say same.
Beppi is a homage to Fleischer's iconic character Koko the Clown of the Betty Boop cartoons and 1930s animation
Baroness Von Bon Bon seems to be inspired by the French queen Marie Antoinette. This is indicated by her utilization of her cake castle in her final phase, referencing the phrase "Let them eat cake".
Her name, Bon Bon, is used in various languages (like French or many Balkan countries) for candy.
She throws her head at Cuphead and Mugman could be a reference to The Queen Of Hearts in Alice In Wonderland. The Queen's popular quote is "Off with his/her head!"
• In The Cuphead Show season 2 episode 5 "Sweet Temptation" Baroness is main antagonist. Why? Because she is an evil, psychol and murderous individual that turns children who break her rules into candy so she can eat them. But in Cuphead ( my version) she is an sweet, beautiful, loving and a little aggressive and dramatic, who she is Ruler of Sugarland and Cuphead falls in love with her.
Baroness is inspired by Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time.
• In The Cuphead Show, She very coincidentally resembles Mommy Long Legs from Poppy Playtime, as they both initially claim to help the protagonists but end up trying to kill them in the end.
Grim Matchstick was named after Grim Natwick, a legendary animator notable for his designing of Fleischer's Betty Boop and Disney's Snow White, with his stutter also being a direct reference to Natwick.
Grim's personality matches that of the Dragon from The Reluctant Dragon, as both characters are wanting to prove that they are friendly and yearn to gain acceptance into society among their peers.
• He also bears a resemblance to Taro from The 7th Voyage of Sinbad which is one of the creatures animated via stop-motion by Ray Harryhausen.
• Grim's facial structure, complete with a pointed muzzle, bears a small resemblance to that of Maleficent's dragon form the 1959 Disney film, Sleeping Beauty.
• He also bears a physical resemblance to Grimm from Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders.
His final, three-headed form is presumably based off of King Ghidorah from the Godzilla or the Hydra, a three-headed dragon from Greek mythology
Cuphead call him "Wawel Dragon". It's a famous dragon in Polish legend.
Grim have son.
• In The Cuphead Show Grim Matchstick is shown to have a child, implying that he might have a wife. Season 1 Episode 10 " Dangerous Mugman" Grim save his child from Porkrind ( How cute!)
Wally Warbles is inspired by the giant roc in Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor
• Wally's name may be a reference to Walter Lantz, founder of Walter Lantz Productions and creator of Woody Woodpecker.
• Wally looks similar to the buzzards from the 1931 Silly Symphony cartoon The Cat's Out.
The vehicle that his son, Willy, uses has a similar appearance and model to Bowser Junior's clown car.
Penelope Peaowl's song " I don't want to miss a thing " is refence to Aerosmith, rock band who they singing that song.
Final phase her showtime, she resembles Harpy, a half-woman and half-bird from Greek mythology.
In knockout, her boa choking her is similar boa constrictor - a species of snake from the constrictor family, one of the representatives of the boa subfamily.
Cuphead jokingly says that she and Rumor are lesbians. They really aren't.
Werner Werman is inspired Mortimer Mouse from the 1936 Disney short Mickey's Rival.
Due to the nature of the battle and inclusion of Katzenwagen, Werner's boss fight is a reference to the iconic Tom and Jerry cartoons.
• Werner's screaming similar to the iconic screams of Tom
• In The Cuphead Show Season 2 Episode 10 " Rats All Folks!" is most likely a parody of Tom & Jerry. ( Wener Werman is the main antagonist in the episode . Also he is small)
Werner's colour scheme, the shape of his muzzle, and his habit of constructing machines make him similar to Wile E. Coyote from Looney Tunes.
He also seems to be very similar to Vladimir from Nickelodeon's My Life as Teenage Robot, as they're both villainous rats with heavy accents (German for Werner, and Russian for Vladimir), and they attack their foes by using various weapons and automatons (Werner using his own soup-can tank, and Vladimir using Jenny, albeit only in his debut episode).
Werner speaks German accent.
Captain Brineybeard is a direct reference to Bluto from Popeye.
Brineybeard lost his legs by Cala Maria ( Sea Gorgon) to save his daughter ( in my version)
• In The Cuphead Show season 2 episode 3 "A High Seas Adventure! " he as stone by Cala Maria lost his legs by Mugman ( by accident)
• He is madly in love with her ( Yup. He is simp)
Brineybeard's song ,"Yo, Ho, Ho (And a Bottle of Rum)" is refence to Treasure Island, where pirates singing that song.
Cala Maria was human, and she have job as archaeologist ( reference to Lara Croft from Tomb Raider), and then she was possessed by spirit and transformed to giant monster aka Sea Gorgon ( or Sea Beast in The Cuphead Show) referencing to Enchatress (June Moone), super villain from DC Comics.
• Luckey, she was back to normal by Dr Kahl.
Her have last name "Neptune", that reference to Neptune ( Poseidon), god of sea.
Her level name is incredibly similar to that of a level in the game Crash Bandicoot: Twinsanity, named High Sea Hi-Jinks.
She is most likely inspired by Ariel from Disney's The Little Mermaid, as evident to being both mermaids
• Her skin color is similar to that of Ursula from The Little Mermaid.
• Her electrocution is similar to the former's death, as when she is killed, her skeleton is also seen. Additionally, the eels helping her may be referencing Flotsam and Jetsam, two eels who act as Ursula's henchmen.
Cala Maria's second form is based on the infamous Gorgon Medusa from Greek mythology.
• The fact that this is an air battle against might be inspired by the battle with Medusa in chapter 9 of Kid Icarus: Uprising.
• Her floating head form in the final phase is a reference to Medusa being decapitated by Perseus in Greek mythology, which has also been referenced in other video games featuring Medusa, such as the Medusa Head, a recurring enemy and boss in the Castlevania series.
When transforming into her third phase, her body turns to stone and her arms fall off, making it resemble the famous statue, Venus de Milo.
She has a similar name and color pallete to Celia Mae from the Disney Pixar film Monsters Inc., another gorgon-based character who has snakes for hair.
Mugman falls in love with her.
• Cala Maria and Mugman being love interests in the latter's book in “The I Scream Man“ in The Cuphead Show Season 2 ep 6 "The I Scream Man"
Dr. Kahl was inspiration from other mad scientists in other platforming game franchises, such as Dr. Wily from Mega Man, Dr. Eggman from Sonic the Hedgehog, or Dr. Neo Cortex from Crash Bandicoot.
His robot similar to the Iron Giant from The Iron Giant ( He haved GIANT, but now gave FRANK)
• Dr Kahl's phase of the fight seems to bear a strong resemblance to the battle with N. Gin from Crash Bandicoot: Warped.
The Robot's presentation is ancillary to Rayman 2 The Great Escape, where the Seller visits Razorbeard and introduces Grolgoth as the Pirate's solution to Rayman's problem.
The invention of the "Beauty Machine" refers to the video game Banjo Kazooie, this machine works and managed to make Cala beaty and normal.
Robot say "BITE MY SHINE METAL ASS" is refence to Futurama, when Bender say same.
Rumor Honeybottoms was inspired to Honey Woman, an unused boss character from Capcom's Mega Man 9.
Security Bee seems to be inspired by a policeman ant from the 1940 cartoon Ants in the Plants, as both have similar designs.
• His design may have been inspired by Buzz the Bee, the Honey Nut Cheerios mascot.
• Also inn The Cuphead Show!, there are multiple security bees, but these security bees come in both genders and their colour schemes appear more green-ish. Their presence may suggest that Rumor Honeybottoms may be present in some way.
Sally Stageplay may have been inspired by Sally Swing, a blonde character from Betty Boop.
• She has a similar color scheme to Sally Brown from Peanuts, who also (albeit coincidentally) has her given name.
In Cuphead Show season 3 episode 3 "Cupstaged", Sally Stageplay enters the theater pretending to have rabies to demonstrate what acting is. ( I love Marcia Gay Harden, who she voiced Sally ! 💖)
The Phantom Express is an homage to the Ghost Train from Final Fantasy VI. A musical nod to this train is included in Railroad Wrath
• The background for this fight is inspired by the 1929 Disney cartoon The Skeleton Dance.
Cuphead said to the Devil ''We'll never turn to the dark side" is reference to Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
in the end Cuphead and Mugman married Baroness Von Bon Bon and Cala Maria ( In my version) this refers to the fanatic CupheadxBaroness and MugmanxCalaMaria ( I mean others prefer another relationship romantic, but for me...whatever. ) .

It should also be noted that while "the devil ain't shit and should be regarded as a stupid motherfucker and not revered or feared" is not a specifically American take on the concept (or even a new one, this concept has come and gone a lot of times over the centuries), that sentiment is very much present within a lot of southern American takes on Christianity both within the church and throughout the wider cultural landscape
''the devil ain't shit and is fuckin lying about his fiddle playing skills and also i have god and anna may on my side''
--Someone named Tommy Lee Jenkins or Betty Sue Franklin probably
#I learned ''don't make a deal with the devil'' from movies and shit#I've never been to a church service where the devil was#anything more serious than an internet troll#there's a lot you can say about southern american christians but#''they stress out too much about the devil stealing your soul'' isn't really one of them#even baptists are more concerned about ''the antichrist'' than satan directly#if the average southern american was dropped into a Devil Went Down to Georgia situation#they'd take that bet tbh

Nancy E. Hatfield Memories, Part 1 (1974)
Nancy E. Hatfield Memories, Part 1 (1974)
Howard B. Lee, former Attorney General of West Virginia, provided this account of Nancy Hatfield (widow of Cap) in the early 1970s: HATFIELD WOMEN. Over the years, much has been written about the male members of the Hatfield clan who took part in that early orgy of blood-letting–the Hatfield-McCoy feud. But nothing has been said concerning the indomitable wives of that stalwart breed of…

Any big thoughts on Immortal Hulk now that it's over?
What a run. Easily the best Marvel one overall since Hickman's Avengers and the best Hulk run since Pak was on the title.
Ewing is a writer who loves to use continuity as a building block rather than seeing it as an obstacle. Immortal Hulk incorporated as much of Hulk's history as it could, from the widely popular PAD and Pak Hulk runs, to centering Devil Hulk, a concept from the lesser known Jenkins run on Hulk. As a Hulk fan who was first introduced to Devil Hulk through the Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction video game, it gave me a feeling of childhood glee when I realized just who this new version of Hulk was. Never expected to see that incarnation again, especially in the wake of the MCU softening Hulk's edges for a wider audience. Devil Hulk certainly lives up to his name, gleefully reveling in the pain he dishes out on evil doers. Positing him as the alter created to meet Bruce's desire for a father figure really works well, Devil is as close as Bruce can conceive of what a dad who protects him instead of abusing him would be like. Notable that he shares many traits with Brian Banner, but that maliciousness is directed outward at the world rather than inward as so much of Bruce's negative traits are.
Eschewing MCU synergy, this run chose to mine the history of Hulk comics for potential ideas on how to move the character forward. Even the core concept of the series is a return to the more "horror monster" vibes of the early Stan Lee and Jack Kirby Hulk debut series. My beloved Bill Bixby Hulk TV show is also heavily incorporated at the start with the inclusion of Jackie McGee (a black female counterpart to the Jack McGee of that old show), and the starting status quo being Bruce on the run and trying to stay under cover. Kind of a pity that we don't get Bruce saying that iconic line from the show, or at least a variation of it, but I'm glad that show hasn't been totally forgotten in the wake of the MCU and Ruffalo.
Joe Fixit even makes his own triumphant return to the Hulk book, after spending years slumbering in Bruce's mindscape. Of all the characters in Immortal Hulk, Joe is the one who arguably develops the most. He spent years hating both Bruce and the Savage Hulk, seeing them both as competitors for control of the body they share. By the end of the series, Joe has become a protective older brother to Savage, and willingly walks into Hell to rescue Bruce and Devil. Of the alters, Joe is the one who ends up becoming the most heroic and selfless, quite the turnaround from his days of working as an enforcer in Las Vegas. No idea if that final promise he makes to McGee is just Ewing setting up a potential plotlines for someone else to use if desired, or something he himself plans to revisit one day, but I hope that story happens.
One interesting bit of connective tissue is how pretty much every major supporting cast member undergoes some kind of transformation, whether horrifying (Fortean, Rick Jones, Samson) or empowering (Betty, Dr. Charlene McGowan, Jackie McGee). Hulk himself obviously embodies both aspects, empowering himself through the body horror his immortality has afforded him. Even other Hulk alters undergo transformations, such as Joe Fixit changing from Gray to Red at the end of the series, switching from gamma to cosmic energy as his power source. While Hulk is obviously the main character, his supporting cast members echo his journey in ways that either are a direct parallel or contrast to his development.
Rick Jones and Doc Samson, classic Hulk supporting characters, make their return to being major players in Hulk's stories. Rick has always been the Hulk's "Jimmy Olsen", the kid pal sidekick who partakes in weird and bizarre transformations and status quo shifts. Rick has been a hero and a Hulk himself throughout his career, always tied to Hulk by the debt he feels he owes Bruce for saving him from the gamma bomb. Immortal Hulk acknowledges and incorporates all of that, Rick starts out as the new Abomination (a reference to his days as the heroic "A-bomb"), becomes possessed by Leader (a reference back to the old mental link between the two from PAD), and ends up trapped in a body horror nightmare after he's merged with Del Frye, mirroring Hulk's own transformation throughout Immortal Hulk. Rick is used and abused throughout the series, paralleling Hulk's own journey, and it isn't until the end of the Gamma Flight series that Rick finds some measure of relief from his pain. Given the ultimate revelation about the nature of why Hulk suffers, I see in Rick the closest mirror to Hulk. Both suffer simply because they must, because it's what the nature of the universe demands.
Samson has his own horror journey to undergo, the man of science and logic forced to confront terrors beyond mortal comprehension. Arrogance and self-righteousness have long been central to his character, with his story arc over the course of the run being his acceptance that he doesn't have all the answers. Samson and Bruce have long been reflections of each other in ways beyond just the gamma. Bruce is another man of science who believed he had all the answers once, until he was blown to hell by the gamma bomb he built, and learned with the emergence of the Hulk that some forces defy human control or understanding. Despite seeing the pain and suffering gamma can unleash, Samson was arrogant enough to think he would be able to avoid that fate of Bruce by exposing himself to siphoned gamma from Bruce. Over the course of Immortal Hulk he's thoroughly disabused of that arrogance, and comes to understand that gamma is not a toy and there are no free rides. Spending time in Hell and being trapped in Sasquatch's body are learning experiences about the dangers in meddling with forces you don't understand for the good Doctor.
And then there's Betty, poor long suffering Betty Ross-Banner, wife of Bruce and Hulk. Betty who was killed solely to make Bruce suffer and then brought back to serve the needs of her "betters". Betty who suffers for and because of Bruce/Hulk. Just as Hulk's transformation becomes much more horrifying and monstrous, Betty goes from her gorgeous Red She-Hulk form to Red Harpy. Both Betty and Bruce want an end to their suffering, but Betty has an external entity in Bruce to project all her anger and hurt at, whereas Bruce can only blame and hate himself.
Betty parallels Bruce in that her Red Harpy alter ego exists to protect her from threats, of which Bruce is an enormous one emotionally for her at this point. Devil Hulk was set free after Bruce's death during Civil War II pushed him over the edge. Getting murdered by Bushwacker likewise caused Betty to mentally snap. She's unable to even talk to him outside her Red Harpy form, so great is the trauma and rage she feels towards him. Similarly Bruce himself gives Joe Fixit control when he has to interact with Betty because of his inability to handle her insistence on using that form to speak with him.
By the end of the series, Hulk wants to reconcile with Betty, wants to be a good person, but she seems skeptical of whether he can truly change. Betty gets pissed that Joe and Savage left Bruce in Hell, and that pushes them to mount a rescue. Unfortunately despite Betty wanting to talk to Bruce at last, we never get to see the conversation she wants to have play out. Immortal Hulk ends without a final conversation between the two, one of the few big missteps of the run. Given the focus on the relationship between Betty, Bruce, and Hulk, it feels unsatisfying to not see Betty get to have the honest conversation with Bruce that she and Joe Fixit have. No idea if Betty and Bruce talked in Defenders, I haven't read any of Ewing's other ongoings, but to not have it in Immortal Hulk stood out to me.
Finally we come to our last major players: The classic Hulk villains. I thought Ewing's use of Fortean was enjoyable, although it's a bummer that he wasn't able to use Ross because Coates had dibbs on him for his boring Captain America run. As a Ross stand-in however I thought he served his purpose well, Fortean and his Shadow Base were fun opening villains and helped establish the run's "back to basics" opening feel. Wasn't a huge fan about the take on Abomination however. While horrifying, I'm still waiting for someone to really do a big modern Abomination story with the Blonsky character (who desperately needs a revamp). Making Rick and Fortean Abomination instead of using Blonsky felt like a missed opportunity. Ewing did use Blonsky over in Gamma Flight, but that was just a minor side story at best.
Minotaur and Xemnu the Living Hulk however were fucking amazing. Minotaur as the "face" of the worst of civilization that Bruce and Hulk wanted to smash was extremely satisfying. We all hated Agger for constantly pulling bullshit and getting away with it because he was one of Aaron's pet characters (in addition to the heinous shit he does elsewhere and in this run). Seeing Agger and Roxxon humbled by the end felt great. Xemnu underwent such a great revamp, becoming the embodiment of empty nostalgia that has nothing to offer but brain rot. Way he "ate" Dagger up was one of the biggest "holy shit" moments in a run full of them. I hope that his use here means that future writers will want to make him one of Hulk's reoccuring foes, because he has a lot of interesting themes regarding nostalgia that I think are on point.
Finally there's the ultimate Big Bad of the run: Leader. Been a long time since Leader has been presented as being on the threat level he's shown to be here. Manipulating everyone, from the other villains, to the supporting cast members, to the Hulk alters themselves, Samuel Sterns reestablished himself as the Hulk's archnemesis. Leader has his own level of body horror, the scenes where he "eats" Brian Banner, turns Bruce into a fucked up human Kabbalah Tree of Life, gets possessed by the One Below All, or causes Hulk to "detonate" and kill a bunch of people are moments I'll long remember. Issue 34 which acts as a tour throughout Stern's entire history, a masterwork in Ewing's ability to utilize continuity too enhance storytelling, is one of my favorite issues of the entire run. His actions over the course of the series will definitely remind you why he's one of the best villains Marvel has.
Not sure how I feel about making Bruce Banner and Samuel Sterns (distantly) biologically related. I don't hate it but I also don't think it really adds much to their relationship, especially since neither of them seems to know or care. Might end up just being a bit of pointless continuity trivia in the long run, doesn't feel like something that was needed. Sterns ends the series depowered again, and seemingly terrified of all things gamma, although that obviously won't stick forever. Interesting that both Sterns and Bruce essentially end Immortal Hulk having been given "clean slates" as it were, whether either actually changes as a result of that will be left up to Donny Cates I suppose.
Immortal Hulk doesn't just look back to the past however, it also brought fresh new ideas and concepts to the franchise. The Green Door and the Gamma Hell mythology that Ewing created is one of my favorite additions to the Hulk mythos since Pak's Sakaar world-building. Ewing really enjoys combing the "science" of Marvel with more mystical leanings. Obviously a run immersed in horror and featuring a "Devil Hulk" is probably going to feature Hell in some manner, and Ewing's science-fiction take on the concept is no less terrifying. Hell for Hulk is a post apocalyptic world, fitting given that Hulk himself was birthed from bombs. There you'll see the burnt out husks of every soul touched by gamma or the Hulk in some way. It's a personal Hell for Hulk and a terrifying one. Forgive me for the commercialization, but man a Hulk game set in Gamma Hell would be amazing.
Casting "Kirbons"/cosmic energy as the "Heavenly" energy source as opposed to the "Hellish" gamma was one of my favorite retcons especially given the reveal about the One Below All. The One Above All (the ultimate Marvel God) and The One Below All (the ultimate Marvel Devil/Anti-God) are ultimately the same being. Both gamma and kirbons flow from the same source, and we know Jack Kirby is what the OAA "really" looks like, meaning it all flows from Kirby. Thought that was fitting given Kirby co-created both the Fantastic Four and Hulk with Stan Lee.
Very meta also that Hulk's final confrontation with his "creator" cribs from the Biblical Book of Job. Job doesn't suffer because of anything he did, he suffers because it makes for a good story about the point of suffering: sometimes there isn't any. Sometimes we suffer for no discernable reason. Hulk likewise asks "God" why does he suffer, "why does Hulk hurt?", and the answer is more or less that he suffers because he has to. He suffers because it's what he was made to do. Marvel heroes are created to be flawed and prone to misery, and Hulk is one of the most prominent Marvel heroes, so suffering is something he will always have to endure. It's his nature to do so as much as he wishes to change, although he IS capable of defying his nature to be something else as seen with his ability to forgive Sterns and rescue him from Hell at the end.
Ultimately the main themes of Immortal Hulk is about transformation and acceptance. People change or are capable of changing, and accepting that is a key part of life. Bruce's inability to accept the Hulk as part of him is what has made his life hell for so long. Only after accepting Hulk is Bruce able to find some measure of happiness and fulfillment for himself. Likewise the Hulks are traditionally the darker aspects of Bruce that he walls off from himself. They hate Bruce for rejecting them and imprisoning them, yet it's only by accepting Bruce that they can grow beyond his initial conceptions of them. Joe doesn't start transforming into someone heroic until he accepts his responsibility to both Bruce and Savage, and tries to protect them without Devil around to do that. Savage himself is only able to transform beyond being the embodiment of wrath once he is able to forgive and accept Sterns as a "Hulk" as well, becoming an embodiment of mercy. Really enjoyed seeing how Bruce and his alters ability to transform their "system" by working cooperatively instead of fighting with each other caused them to transform into healthier people by the end.
Thinking about the ending has left me with mixed feelings however. Not saying I disliked it, I thought overall it was a good, solid ending. But it was only "good" not "great", and I think that's something that can be laid at the feet of everything ultimately needing to return to status quo. "Hulk is Hulk" as the run constantly reminds us, and despite making repeated attempts to do so, despite multiple "Hulk" alters which act differently, ultimately Bruce and the Hulk can't ever truly change. There exists a base characterization that Hulk must always return to no matter how long he stays away. Despite knowing that, it feels unsatisfying to not see more of a change in Bruce and Hulk's status quos by the end. Having Bruce not remember anything of his time in Hell feels like a cop-out to justify "resetting" him to status quo. What about Bruce's plans to end the world? Does he still want that? Are we meant to have taken that merely as Devil's influence on him, and with Devil dead, that drive is now gone?
Speaking of Devil it's so weird that he "dies" and it's essentially unremarked upon except for Bruce briefly considering the possibility that he has merged with Devil and no longer needs any father figures. This was the main Hulk we started out with and followed for around 30+ issues of the run, yet he's given just a passing mention in the ending. One other major quibble I have is that early on Bruce's mother was shown to be in Gamma Hell as well, and that feels like it was setting up some plot point that never got addressed. Why was she there? We've gotten so much focus on Brian it's disappointing we don't have much info or characterization for Bruce's mother given how much he loved her.
And of course the run itself had plenty of behind the scenes drama caused by Joe Bennett. Sneaking in a lot of bigoted imagery really clashes with the themes Ewing was going for. However I don't think that will ultimately harm the run's reputation in the long run, most people will never know or care if I can be blunt. Does make that final page feel hollow however given the dislike I'm sure Ewing and Bennett have for each other now. Even with the sun out, there's still a shadow cast over that ending.
Regardless it's a run I wholeheartedly recommend for anyone who is a fan of Hulk or horror and wants an in. Despite it's love for continuity and callbacks, everything is explained in a way that even someone who has never read a Hulk comic before should be able to read this entire run without any major problems. When the hardcover omnibuses are released, I will definitely be picking them up.

august
pairing: sheriff lee bodecker x younger! reader
warnings: cheating, age gap
a/n: i wanted to write this chapter to show how y/n’s and lee’s affair began and to show how y/n shaped lee or his point of view. this song is mostly based off august from taylor swift (bc we all know at this point that i’ll just write fanfics based of any folklore/evermore songs) and war of hearts from ruelle. this one is not smut, the next one (illicit affairs) is gonna be. additionally, i’ve come to the conclusion that knockemstiff y/n dressed like betty draper and after-knockemstiff y/n dresses likes meg draper and that is canon. btw if you’re interested in what she’s wearing in this chapter here [x] p.s.: lee’s not captain yet in this chapter
> ILLICIT AFFAIRS
Salt air and the rust on your door, I never needed anything more. Whispers of are you sure? Never have I ever before. But I can see us lost in the memory, August slipped away into a moment in time ‘cause it was never mine
August was an odd month this year; the godless and sunless town was going through the biggest heatwave anyone could remember. Most habitants were in the parks and outside their homes in plastic chairs enjoying the heat, however, in Y/N’s house, they were baking apple pies with the apples leftover from the little apple tree farm they had a bit south from the town centre. Y/N had suggested they just gave away the apples but her grandmother, ever the traditional woman, believed the best way to show appreciation would be to bake something. “It shows you care, Y/N” as if she cared about anyone in this god forbidden town. She couldn’t wait to pack her bags and go to the big city where she can be something other than a trophy wife. Besides, it wasn’t like there were any available suitable husband options around.
She wiped the flour out of her forehead as she placed the last pie in the oven. 24 pies, surely that would account for a high electricity bill at the end of the month. Not that it mattered anyway, her grandmother could more than afford it after all she was the woman right now sat at the kitchen table, giving out plates as if they cost nothing.
- Y/N, sweetheart, can you go and deliver the pie on the living room. It’s already cold and I don’t want it to go stale.
- Yeah, sure.
- To Captain Bodecker’s house. Promised Jane I’d send her one.
- Captain Bodecker’s? But that’s in town. - she scratched her elbows. She’d rather not go to Captain Bodecker’s house yet again he probably wasn’t even around, always busy in the station. - Can I take the car?
- It’s a 20 minute walk, it’s sunny outside and you’re young. Save on gas.
- But ...
- Y/N, you better be outside with that pie in 5 seconds or we’ll have a problem. - she interrupted.
Y/N sighed, unlacing the back of her apron and placing it on the hook. Just great, that’s all she needed today, to walk to the town centre to deliver one of the pies she had just spent the whole morning preparing. She guessed it could’ve been worse, she could’ve had to go deliver it to the police station then Captain Bodecker would’ve definitely been there. It wasn’t that she disliked him, quite the opposite. Back when she volunteered at the precinct he was the only one who was nice to her or at least the only one who wouldn’t try to put his hand under her skirt. He’d even memorised her name which not even the Sheriff who had hired her knew, to this day whenever he saw her he still called her Bella. He was nice to her and she couldn’t say she hadn’t developed a little school girl crush on him, despite the fact he was married. He’d even stood up for her when her manager started screaming at her. Nevertheless, she couldn’t stand being in his presence, feeling like whatever she said would get her in trouble. His wife wasn’t someone she enjoyed either; Jane Bodecker was known for having quite the sharp gossiping tongue. Most of her friends commented their “men friends” would comment how she used to have quite the reputation while at high school and whenever she saw her at the shop, she’d always call her Little Miss Perfect or make some side comment about how she was occupying a job that someone else needed. Still, Y/N could deal with Jane, a little smile, a nod and she was ready to deal with the devil.
The sun scorched her skin as she walked her last minutes til the Bodecker residence. It was a nice home, recently painted with some nice flowers in the front garden yet there were rumours of Captain Bodecker wanting to move to Brewer Heights. Y/N didn’t know how she’d react if during her morning walks she passed by him, so she counted it only as rumours. Standing in front of the red door, she held the pie in one hand and knocked against it with the other one. She stood there waiting for someone to come in until footsteps made her wake up from her dream-like state and prepare to deal with Jane. However, as the door open, a familiar silhouette had her heart racing.
- Y/N, what brings you here? - she watched him dressed in casual clothing, something she barely saw if she had ever seen; jeans and a white t-shirt.
- Captain Bodecker ... I ... I was looking for your wife. My grandmother sent this. - she held up the pie in front of her. - She said Mrs. Bodecker wanted one.
- Jane’s ... out. Come in. - he opened the door wider for her but she remained in the same place like a statue. - Come on, it’s too hot out. Don’t want no fainting lass complains on my day off. ‘Sides, don’t you want a slice of pie?
- I really shouldn’t.
- You can say no if you want to. No need to be afraid of me, Y/N. - he leaned against the doorframe. - Thank you for the pie, though.
- I guess I can stay a bit. - she tucked a bit of hair behind her ear. Lee couldn’t help but shamelessly check her out as she walked inside his home. It was no secret she was a beautiful woman, heck, Lee thought her to be the prettiest little thing to ever arrive into town, with her sunny smile and pretty dresses. This one was no different, lavender which complimented her so well with a little white rope tied around her waist into a bow, like a little present. Nevertheless, he kept it under wraps he was a married man besides every man in town shamelessly harassed her, despite the side eye he gave them.
He watched as the fabric of her dress swung with the movement of her hips. Lee surely didn’t expect such a pretty girl to walk into his home, had he known he would’ve made an effort to fix the mess that was his house. Normally Jane tended to keep that sorted as he usually spent the day and night at work, but with her staying with her mother after their last fight. It wasn’t anything new, she always did that whenever they fought and then would return after Lee made a fool of himself by begging her to return and that he was wrong during the fight. Still, she placed the pie on his kitchen table with a gentleness and posture which mirrored her privileged upbringing. He couldn’t lie and say his mind hadn’t wandered around how she would look when she eventually got married, after all that was the future of all Knockemstiff women. He also couldn’t lie and say he hadn’t wondered how she would look as his wife. She was sweet, with a sharp mind which definitely had not been appreciated in the precinct. Despite this, productivity seemed to raise whenever she called out any officers who had their feet on top of their desks instead of doing paperwork. He still remembered having to always keep an eye on her, were any officers to get too rowdy with her. Yet, she didn’t care and she held herself and believed herself to deserve the same respect as every working man in Knockemstiff. Although he imagined how she would be as a wife, he had to admit he couldn’t see her ever being some Knockemstiff’s man’s wife and with the example from her grandmother, she was surely on the path to be a rebellion starter.
- Big fan of apple pie, Y/N?
- My grandmother refuses to sell the apples so instead I woke up at 6AM and have been baking apple pies nonstop. She says it shows I care.
- Never thought you to be found of Knockemstiff residents.
- And I am not. - she spoke as if the mere thought of it offended her. - She said she promised Jane one.
- Don’t think Jane will be back for a while. - he leaned against the kitchen door, watching her place the pie onto his kitchen table. - You can take half that pie, if you want.
- Trust me, I have my share of apple pie at home. - she folded her hands on top of her stomach. - Uhm ... Do you want me to cut you a slice of pie? I normally take mine with a bit of vanilla ice cream on top. It’s gorgeous, the warmth of the pie and the cold of the ice cream. You should try it?
- You’re just full of ideas, aren’t ya? - he sat on the wooden chair as she sliced the pie to the best of her abilities. - Shouldn’t you be at university, or someth’ng?
- Well, grandma had the stroke and she’s not as motile as she used to be. I’ve been taking some classes at Ohio University but it’s not the same, it’s ...
- It’s not the big city, ain’t it? - he added.
- It’s not that I dislike Knockemstiff, Captain ...
- Yeah you do. - he interrupted her. - Just don’t let the Sheriff hear it. He already ain’t too found of ya.
- Nobody in that precinct liked me. - she rolled her eyes. - Well, they did but I did not like them in that way.
- I liked ya. Whenever you screamed at Leroy it always made my day.
- Leroy’s the most incompetent person I know. All he does is pimp girls out as if he discovered prostitution. I feel sorry for the girls.
- He does a good service.
- Of course you’d know. - she pushed her hair away from her shoulders, feeling the sweat roll down her neck. God it was, too hot. Lee furrowed his brown, laying the fork onto the porcelain plate. She caught his look, brow raising over in a playful, smug kind of way, before she laid her hands on the table. - I’ve seen it before.
- You’ve seen it before?
- Don’t worry, I didn’t see IT, but I saw Jenny get in the car with you just after graduation. I know what she does, she would call me all the time whenever Leroy was being an ass.
- Oh ...
- Don’t worry, I’m not gonna say anything. Everyone in this town cheats, mostly because everyone in this town marries someone just because they think that will save them from Hell. No one is saved if they’re born in Knockemstiff, not even me.
- You mean to tell me you’ve done bad things, Y/N? ‘Cause I don’t believe it.
- I’ve never done it but I’ve thought bad things. All the time. - her gaze lowered from his face to his waist before returning back to his eyes. It was a millisecond gaze, something she herself knew but he didn’t notice, no matter how observant he was. There were no perfect men in Knockemstiff, but in Y/N’s mind he was her perfect man. After all, there are no perfect men anywhere, even Saints sin and then die heroically to get into heaven. Y/N would rather sin than die for people who would’ve had her accidentally killed many times if it weren’t for her grandmother’s name and status in town. What’s the fun in being good? Every time she was good she got yelled at, someone put her hand under her skirt or tried to pin her against a wall. She was good, she would just rather sin so people wouldn’t taint her goodness. It’s a question of self preservation, at least that’s what she told herself.
- That doesn’t make you bad. If so there wouldn’t be good people.
- There are no good people. - she added, ever the negative person she was, something she had inherited from her mother and which everyone who knew her could trace back to. - All people are born so they could be buried. Everything you do ... in a 100 years they won’t remember everything and all that be left of you is your burial site. That’s your legacy.
- Such negative views for someone who wants out of Knockemstiff. I thought you’d have a better outlook on things.
- I’m never getting out of here. - she sighed, almost used to the idea that she was going to stay no matter how long she fought it. - I’m gonna die here.
- Dying ain’t so bad. - he leaned against his chair. Y/N smiled at him, looking around his home. It was messy yes but it was still a good home yet that wasn’t what she noticed. Looking out the window, she saw a built in pool. She didn’t remember hearing the Captain had a pool. Sure, he had a the better salary compared to everyone else in town except for the Sheriff, Mayor, and her grandmother. Yet she had never heard of him having a pool, not even she had one.
- You have a pool?
- Yeah, built it back when Sandy used to come over to wind up from the dinner job. She’s married now so I don’t think she wants a pool at her big brother’s home anymore.
- I don’t think anyone in town has a pool. - she rose from her chair and walked to the window in a lavender rush. - It’s gorgeous.
- You can come over whenever you want, Y/N.
- Can I go now? - she looked over her shoulder to him. The idea of being able to swim while the boiling august heat continued to shine down onto the hellish town. Somehow it made sense yet it didn’t. Lee cocked his head to the side, wondering if he’d misheard her words or if she was really considering swimming into his pool. Unwanted feeling stirred south of him and he punished himself mentally for imagining the lavender flower girl in such ways.
- Well, uh ... you don’t have a swimming costume. - he babbled like a confused, stunned child.
- I can swim on my undergarments. It’s pretty much a lace embroidered swimming costume. - Lee merely nodded, not knowing exactly what to do but knowing he was flirting with sin, looking at an abysses and seeming not to fear that he was going straight into it.
Y/N walked from the window up to the kitchen door which led over to the garden. The once white door had withered with time, turning slightly yellowish with rust on the borders, the glass of the small see through windows cracked yet remaining its shape. The door seemed to be a small reminder of what was still wrong in the Captain’s life but she chose not to dwell over it, no to think about it. She felt the cobblestones against her feet covered by an old pair of white ballerina slips as her mirrored image became clear in the crystalline pool water.
Lee on the other hand watched like a hawk, from the rusted door he’d broken so many bottles of liquor against, as her lavender fabric fell to the dirty cobblestones. The contrast of the prim expensive dress against the cobblestones which had aged as badly as he had done was telling. At least it was telling enough for him and he wondered if this was a gift from God or if the devil was toying with him. The devil is in the details, his mother used to say, yet as she emerged from the water, hands pulling down her hair, he was almost entirely sure the devil was the girl in his pool, the same girl who had worn white dresses until her 18th birthday. Yet again, the devil was once an angel and to him, she was closer to becoming a fallen one than continuing to wear shades of white.
- You don’t swim, captain? - she asked as she swam to the border of the pool.
- I don’t enjoy doing it. - he stayed glued to the door, a good distance from her to ensure he didn’t get tempted. - You gonna just swim around like a mermaid, huh?
- It’s better in the water than on the cobblestones, I tell ya. - she dipped into the water once again only to return to the surface, water droplets rolling down from her plump skin. - Come on, captain. You’re gonna leave me swimming by my lonesome? During the hottest day in Knockemstiff?
- You’re a trouble stirrer.
- Maybe I’m just bored. - she smiled at him. He knew she wasn’t tempting him, he knew Y/N. She liked to tease around, she enjoyed the freedoms which she imposed onto herself and as such she was much different from the women he knew. Not that he knew any women outside of Knockemstiff. He’d been born and raised here and all the women he saw from out of Knockemstiff were on his television screen. - Come on, Captain. It’s your pool.
- I don’t want you to see my belly.
- I don’t care, besides, if it’s that bad then come into your clothing. - her arms rested upon the pool border, wondering eyes tempting even the saint of all saints. Lee looked at the cold water reflecting the afternoon sunlight beams, trying to avoid the thoughts that crossed his mind before turning around. He let his jean trousers pool to the ground along with his shoes before entering the water using the ladder. He was almost sure he’d make her laugh if he were to jump into the water.
The water was cold and dripped from his skin in crystal like drops. Y/N offered him a playful smile, swimming close to him with that wide eye child naughty fun look only she managed to still hold intact. She held her hands slightly back before pushing the water towards him.
- You tellin’ me you invited me in for a water fight? - he chuckled at her actions.
- Afraid I’ll win?
- Kid, you’re much too tiny to win against me.
- Wanna bet? - she threw water again at him, swimming closer and closer to him before anchoring herself against him, hands on his shoulders. - I bet you as many apple pies as you want.
- Yeah, I’m trying not to gain any more weight, kid.
- You have beautiful eyes, I’ve never noticed. - she made eye contact with him, seeing her own reflection in his light blue eyes. Maybe she’d never notice because the uniform was so dark blue his eyes reflected it like mirrors, yet they were light. - They’re gorgeous.
- Trying to make me blush, kid?
- Just never noticed.
- Well huh ... - he could listen to his heart beating and drumming against his chest along with the soft movement of the water. All his eyes could see was her, her hands holding onto his shoulders and her angelic face looking at him. - Thanks, you have nice eyes too.
- You can’t take a compliment, Captain. - she teased.
- I don’t think I’m deserving of any, specially coming from you, kid.
- What is that supposed to mean?
- You know what the men say in town. They think you’re the prettiest thing in a skirt to ever pace around here. Pretty sure they’ll kill each other trying to get your favour.
- My favour? Is that what you think I’m good for?
- No ... I ... That’s not what I meant. - his face creased. - I’m just telling you what I hear.
- You seem to know a lot of gossip about me, captain. If I didn’t know better, I’d think you’ve been asking around.
- What if I have? - Lee watched for the first time her mouth shut close. She didn’t know what to say next, eyebrows furrowed together as she inspected his face, slow blinking. Her eyes left his to look at the water back at him. - Just looking out for you ... not a lot of people like you ‘round town.
He hands gripped his shoulder as she swam closer to him. Her intention was to hug him thank you. Of course she didn’t expect no one to look out for her, she didn’t care about what a bunch of housewives and hopeless alcoholics thought of her. She knew he didn’t inspire adoration in them other. As she got closed to him, he leaned down, capturing her lips into his. Her hands slide from her shoulders to his chest, almost as if she wanted to be the good one and push him away. He was married after all. However, as his lips moved against hers she found herself incapable of pushing him away, hands relaxing just resting against his chest as she found herself acting on her sinful thoughts for the first time.
So much for summer love, for saying us, ‘cause you weren’t mine to lose.
