Significant Jother Prelims!

The prelims for Jacket 4 will come in two waves after the winner’s bonus poll ends on Sunday, so get your votes in there.

First, there will be the prelims to decide between love interests for Johns/Jacks/Variants who had multiple submitted. There are eight of those matches, and they will be released throughout the day on Monday, July 10.

Then, there will be the prelims to decide which single nomination significant jothers will make the bracket. If a nomination was submitted multiple times as the only love interest, they are already in. There are 11 polls of four significant jothers, and the winner of each will make the bracket. Prelims were seeded by submission order, and those polls will be released throughout the day on Wednesday, July 12.

It started like many great ideas, with a restless night and an overactive mind. For some years now I have had a great passion for English history, specifically from the Anglo Saxon to the Victorian era. One of my newest passions is Astrology, the topic is so vast, that it peaks the curiosity of my Gemini placements. So on that sleepless night, it occurred to me that I could create a project combing the two and my mind has not stopped buzzing.

So I have decided to create A Royal Placement. Where I explore the birth charts of the Kings and Queens of England and how their placements may have affected their reign and key events.

In The Anglo Saxon Chronicles Translated by G.N. Garmonsway he states in his introduction:

"The peculiar interest of the chronicler in portents, eclipses, comets and other celestial phenomena may of course reflect merely reflect the normal interest in the supernatural, or may arise from the desire to recall to memory a particular year by reference to supramundane events such as would be likely to linger in folks' memories, by it may also derive ultimately from the great prominence given to astronomical entries in the Easter Table, a knowledge of the movements of the sun and moon was of supreme importance in its calculus.

The first mention within The Anglo Saxon Chronicles is the biblical reference of The Astrologers from the East who came to show honour to Christ and as we know they followed the North star. So we know Astrology had a importance as far back as 6 BC.

In particular, I would like reference two recordings within The Anglo Saxon Chronicles:

In the year 729 the star 'comet' showed itself; and St Egbert passed away.

In the year 995 the star called 'comet' appeared (that is 'the long haired'); and archbishop Sigeric passed away.

Is the appearance of the star called 'comet' merely a coincidence or could it be a omen of events to come.

Something that only barely gets a passing mention in the story but serves as another small sort of parallel between Rhaenyra and Empress Matilda - the use of their respective maternal ancestries to bolster their royal claims.

In Matilda’s case, Henry augmented his case for Matilda by citing her maternal royal lineage as well as her paternal. Certainly, he noted (according to William of Malmesbury’s chronicle) “her grandfather, uncle, and father, who were kings” - but then he went into much more detail discussing “her maternal descent for many ages back”. Matilda’s mother, Matilda (born Edith) of Scotland, was the daughter of Margaret of Wessex, a male-line granddaughter of King Edmund Ironside of the old, pre-Conquest Wessex dynasty. This was the grand royal lineage Henry cited - “Egbert, king of the West Saxons, who first subdued or expelled the other kings of the island”, who began “a line of fourteen kings … in which king Edward, who lies at Westminster, was elevated to the throne”, a dynasty which “did never fail nor falter in the succession”. While his brother Robert and Robert’s son William Clito might have had as strong or stronger arguments to the throne of England (as the most senior male-line descendants of William the Conqueror), Henry appealed to Matilda’s uniquely English royal heritage, as the embodiment of the union between the old dynasty and the new, Norman ruling house.

(Of course, the irony is that Henry arranged the marriage of Stephen - later Matilda’s great rival for the throne - to Matilda of Boulogne, whose mother was Mary of Scotland - that is, a sister of Empress Matilda’s mother and likewise descended from the Wessex royal line.)

In Rhaenyra’s case, her maternal ancestry was likewise uniquely royal, compared to that of Aegon the Elder. Her own mother, Aemma Arryn, was the only other (legitimate) grandchild of Jaehaerys and Alysanne besides Viserys, Daemon, and Rhaenys, as well as the only child of Princess Daella; Rhaenyra thus united two different branches of the Targaryen royal Targaryen dynasty. Again, though, this barely gets touched upon for Rhaenyra: the most it comes up is when Lyman Beesbury, arguing for her right to succeed at the secret council upon Viserys’ death, “reminded the council that Rhaenyra was older than her brothers and had more Targaryen blood”. Of course, the circumstances were very different between Rhaenyra and Matilda here anyway, given that Rhaenyra was not acclaimed as heir ahead of Aegon (who didn’t then exist); while Viserys might have favorably compared Rhaenyra to, say, the assumed heir presumptive Daemon in that extra, maternal dose of Targaryen blood, there’s simply too little information on the actual swearing of Rhaenyra as heir to draw this parallel.
