You know whose deaths hit me the most in TSC? The characters that we just barely saw before their lives were cut short. The ones that don't get brought up much and we don't see a ton of grief over in most of the books. The ones you can't even really find fanart for. It's characters like...

Jon Cartwright - I hated Jon Cartwright in Tales From the Shadowhunter Academy. Then I loved him so much it hurt. He began as this elitist, thick necked lunk that you were designed to intensely dislike from the start. He went from regularly spewing awful things about Downworlders and harassing the dregs in the Academy to a guy who carried Marisol Garza's lunch tray around while she told him about mundane culture and who the Cohort hated in TDA. A guy who cried whenever they would reminisce about George, a mundane who failed to ascend. He showed so much growth, could have been such a help in reforming the members of the Cohort.

George Lovelace - Where do I even start with George? It was impossible not to root for him. He was such a constant friend for Simon in that shaky time when he didn't have his memories and was finding his way. He was so kind and there was so much potential to explore his character further in the successive books. For him to be a solid reference of an ascended mundane who turned into a true Shadowhunter hero. Then it all ended before it could even truly start even though his flower card reads future promise. George Lovelace, you deserved so much better, you will always have a place in my heart.

Max Lightwood - With Max, I know that we do see people grieve over him in the books but it just hits me so hard how much potential he had, all the things he didn't get to do. How we didn't get to fall in love with his siblings-in-laws Clary and Simon who would have taken him to Forbidden Planet and turned him into a proper nerd. How he never got to meet Magnus or the Alec that was sure of himself. How he didn't get to be a part of the TWP gang who he was the same age as. My heart aches at the loss of all those special moments that never to be for Max Lightwood.

Julie Beauvale - I don't know why, but her death hit me the hardest in TDA even though it was only touched on briefly in two separate paragraphs (which I know sounds insane because of everything that happened at the end of LoS and into QOAAD). It's just, she had such an arc. Like, she was traumatized by seeing her sister die at the hands of a faerie and clearly hated them deeply when she first arrived at the Academy. She was also very classist/elitist. But did she stay like that? No, no she didn't. Through the friendships she made at the Academy she changed and let go of that part of her. Julie fought for Livvy's watch in QOAAD even though she almost definitely would have been a Cohort member if it wouldn't have been for her time at the Academy and meeting Simon. So how did her story end? By intercepting an arrow that was shot by a faerie and meant for his faerie brother. Her life coming to a close because of the people she had spent so much of her life hating but came to respect and appreciate to the point that her last moments were spent fighting against people whose entire identity was based around hating them. It was just such an awful full circle moment.

(tags by prev, @edwinspaynes) yessss. i actually didn't think about this but i agree, i think it would be interesting to see her change her surname to something other than blackthorn. but i don't think it would work if she changed it back to cartwright bc for such a long time she has considered her mother to be tatiana and only tatiana, and jesse her brother, to the point where she is no longer attached to the cartwright name. be it grace cartwright or grace blackthorn, i think both would lead back to the fact that she feels like she doesn't belong. not blackthorn enough, as tatiana never really treated her like a daughter as much as she did a marionette, not cartwright enough as it has been so much time she almost doesn't remember her bio parents. i think the best idea would be change to something else, but i guess we'll never know (and i have to admit i like ambiguity regarding this)

More from the Department of Before They Were Star Trek Stars: DeForest Kelley in "The Decision," episode 12 of the second season of BONANZA (original air date December 16, 1962).

Kelley plays gruff, wisecracking Dr. Jons (typecasting!), the only doctor in a remote trail town, who's been falsely convicted of murder after accidentally killing a man in self-defense. The deceased had been threatening Mrs. Jons, and although there was eyewitness testimony to the accidental death, both the judge and sheriff had personal grudges with the doctor. (The judge's wife had died on the operating table after he delayed getting treatment for her until it was too late, and the sheriff was left with a limp after a broken leg.) Ben Cartwright arranges for a temporary parole so he can treat a gravely injured Hoss, and then persuades the judge to reconsider and overturn the conviction.

When Ben first meets Jons, he asks if he's the doctor, and Jons replies, "Not a doctor, a condemned murderer." It's the old switcheroo!

Marisol and Jon: A Love Story in Scenes

Marisol stared at him, her gaze clear and cold. "They told me," she said, "that I was going to fight." She had been taking fencing classes since she could walk, as it turned out. She cut him off at the knees and left him literally in the dust, stumbling as a tiny, swordy whirlwind came at him across the practice grounds, and falling. "Went a little too easy on her," Jon said, passing by and helping Simon up. "The dregs won't learn if they're not taught, you know." His voice was kind; his glance at Marisol was not.

I'll teach you some lessons down in the training grounds," Jon snapped. "I could challenge you to a duel. Watch your mouth." "That's not a bad idea," remarked Marisol. "Oh, hey now," said Beatriz. "Duels with fourteen-year-olds are a bad idea." Everyone looked with scorn upon Beatriz, the voice of reason. Marisol sniffed. "Not a duel. A challenge. If the elites beat us in a challenge, then they get to speak out first in class for a week. If we beat them, then they hold their tongues." "I'll do it, and you'll be sorry you ever suggested it, mundie. What's the challenge?" Jon asked. "Staff, sword, bow, dagger work, a horse race, a boxing match? I'm ready!" Marisol smiled sweetly. "Baseball." Simon had the feeling Marisol was going to be a terrifying, tiny expert on baseball, the same was she was at fencing. He also had the feeling the elite stream was in for a surprise.

"Amazing," said the girl. "I mean that. I'm going to explain all of modern medicine to you." "Please don't do that, Marisol," said Jon. "I did not feel good after you explained appendectomies. I couldn't eat." Marisol made a face at her plate. "So what you're saying is, I did you a huge favor." I like to eat," said Jon sadly. "Right," said Marisol. "So, I don't explain modern medicine to you, and then a medical emergency occurs to me. I could be solved with the application of a little first aid, but you don't know that, and so I die. I die at your feet. Is that what you want, Jon?" "No," said Jon. "What's first aid? Is there a...second aid?" "I can't believe you're going to let me die when my death could so easily be avoided, if you had just listened," Marisol went on mercilessly. "Okay, okay! I'll listen." "Great. Get me some juice, because I'll be talking for a while. I'm still very hurt that you even considered letting me die," Marisol added as Jon scrambled up and made for the side of the room where the unappetizing food and potentially poisonous drinks were laid out. "I thought Shadowhunters had a mandate to protect mundanes!" Marisol shouted after him. "Not orange juice. I want apple juice!" "Would you believe," said Catarina, appearing at Magnus's elbow, "that the Cartwright kid was the biggest bully in the Academy?" "Seems like he met a bigger bully," Magnus murmured.

"What do you think it will be like?" Marisol Garza asked now, nestled beneath Jon Cartwright's beefy arm and looking like she was almost happy to be there. "The ceremony, I mean. What do you thin we'll have to do?" (A bit later) Marisol whacked Jon's shoulder. "Shut up, idiot," she said. But she said it rather too lovingly for Simon's taste. (A bit later) Jon took her hand, and Simon expected her to slap him, but instead she squeezed tight. "It's from Sunil," she said in a tight, angry voice. She passed the note to Simon. "I guess he 'considered his options.'"

I absolutely loved Beatriz and Marisol, I hope we see them again!!!!! Also Simon’s friendship with all these characters was so funny, like the scene where the mundanes challenge the shadowhunters to baseball.

One of my fav TSC books, I wish we got flower cards for more of the characters 😭

What They’d Give For The Right To Hold You

There was a little girl standing in front of Henry. Skinny and small for her age and scraggly blonde hair that could almost be white, and it was far too long for a little girl of her age. Her skin was pale and her eyes were large and grey, the color of storm clouds, almost too dark for her cornsilk-and-cream complexion.

She stared up at him with those big eyes. Grace Penelope Cartwright, seven years old, orphaned only two months ago. She'd been abandoned here, at the Crown Prosecution Service on the same day her adoption was supposed to be finalized.

It was heartbreaking.

Charlotte had been the one to find her, sitting on a bench by herself with a note that she'd already read and explained before Charlotte had even had a chance to glance at it. Her new family had abandoned her, after they'd barely even had her for a month. They were some second cousins of her father, a distant branch of Cartwrights who didn't even know her parents. And they left her in some government office, alone. It made Henry's blood boil.

This little girl had already lost her parents and now her other relatives in one fell swoop. None of it was her choice. It reminded him of another little blonde girl he’d known so long ago.

Grace Cartwright. Jessamine Lovelace. One in the same. But unlike with Jessamine, Henry and Charlotte wouldn’t fail to keep her safe. They wouldn’t, Henry would make sure of that.

He wouldn’t lose another little girl. He couldn’t. Not so close after the last one.

It was only six months ago that he’d had his last miscarriage. Only thirteen weeks in and the longest pregnancy he’d had since Matthew.

They thought it would be a girl. Matilda. Mattie. That’s what they would’ve called her.

It still hurt to think about her, with the wound still so raw. But it was that pain that made him so angry at Grace’s abandonment.

They had had this beautiful little girl and they’d taken her in, cared for her, and then left her because she was “too much”.

How could they take her for granted?

Henry knew that if she were one of his pups, if he were so lucky, he would do everything in his power to make sure she was happy and healthy, that she knew she was loved.

He was pulled out of his thoughts by a small hand tugging on his jacket sleeve. Little Grace Cartwright and her large grey eyes.

“Mr. Henry?” she asks, in her oh-so-quiet voice.

“Yes, Grace?”

“Why don’t my family want me? Do they not love me?”

Henry’s heart just broke. This poor little girl. She was too young to be thinking like this. To think she wasn’t loved. He grabbed her hand in his and looked her in the eyes as he said, “I don’t think they didn’t love you, Grace, or that they didn’t want you. I think that life is just hard sometimes to understand.”

Grace looked back at him with a confused sort of glare. “Are you just saying that because I’m a kid and you think I don’t understand it? Adults do that a lot. They think I don’t understand things. They’d rather lie than tell me the truth. Aunt Irina and Uncle Jon did that a lot. I didn’t like when they did that.”

“That reminds me of something my godson, Christopher, would say. You’d like him,” he couldn’t help but laugh. “And I’ll make you a deal. I won’t lie to you, Grace. Ever. And I wasn’t lying just now. It’s complicated. For you, for me, for Charlotte. It’s hard to understand whether or not you’re seven. It’s hard for me to understand and I’m thirty years older than you.”

Grace seemed to understand and nodded at him. She looked down at her hand, which was still being held by his. Henry thought he even saw the wisp of a smile on her face.

“Now, how about we talk about something else? Is there anything you like to do for fun? Because I, personally love to create things. In fact, I just made this…”

They ended up having an absolutely riveting conversation about the mechanics of robots that turned into natural science, particularly bugs, something little Grace loved with her whole heart. She had even confided in him about her once-pet spider, Hydrangea, who’d tragically been stepped on by her older cousin Clive.

Their conversation lasted for what seemed like hours. People came and went, completely oblivious to the conversation around them.

He was in awe of the little girl, now asleep in his lap. He’d made a decision. One that no one had even asked him to make.

“Henry?” It was Charlotte, finally done with the meeting that had taken forever. The one about locating the Cartwrights and the next steps for Grace. “Is she asleep?”

However, Henry already knew the next step. He just hoped Charlotte was ready for it.

“Yes.” he looked down again at Grace and watched as his alpha-his mate, his wife-smoothed back the pup’s blonde hair behind her ears, just as she would with either of their pups.

He never felt more sure in his decision.

“Lottie?”

“Hm, yes, Hen?”

“I think she’s ours.”

Grace Penelope Cartwright Fairchild was fourteen years old now. Her hair was no longer scraggly and her eyes were as big as ever, and still stormy grey.

Her best friend was Christopher Lightwood-but don’t tell her brother Matthew that-and she could spend hours sitting and playing with him and his chemistry set.

She still loved spiders and other bugs, and spent days holed up with her Papa in his laboratory.

But she wasn’t a lonely, unloved little girl anymore. Because Henry and Charlotte, and Charles and Matthew, had decided she wasn’t. They’d decided she was worth it.

Seven years and two more pups later, Henry still hasn’t felt surer in any decision he’s ever made, as he watches Charlotte guide Grace into holding one of her baby sisters for the first time.

He was too tired to tell you which one it was. Or which one Matthew and Charles were currently fighting over the chance to hold.

Charlotte looked up at him with a smile, after getting Grace situated with the baby. She’d finally noticed him staring.

Henry smiled back. This was his family and they were complete.
