With your energy and penchant for innocent mischief, Welt should by all means get worn out and tired of it all. And yet, a soft, warm glow exudes from him as he looks fondly at you talking, always giving you the time to ramble your heart out. Have they ever seen him smile this much before?

- Don't let his typical calm demeanor fool you. Especially after your disappearing act, his protective instincts toward you go into high gear, and no amount of reassurance will bring them down. He'd always worried about your safety even back in the day, offering to help you out at every chance he got. But now? If anyone's even just a tad too rowdy for his liking while he's walking with you somewhere, he'll instinctively place himself in between you two like a shield. Even if you try to convince him that you're alright and to tone it down, he's just... too scared of you leaving him again. So please stay safe, for his sake as well as yours.

I just found out it’s Indie animation day today, so I’d like to talk about one of my personal favourite indie projects!

MONKEY WRENCH

What is it?

Monkey wrench is a 2D sci-fi action comedy about a an alien mercenary group making ends meet in a post-human galaxy. Hot-headed, trigger-happy Shrike and the more compassionate and patient Beebs take odd jobs to raise their rank on the merc leaderboard in the hopes of making a name for themselves as Monkey Wrench.

Why I like it:

It’s just the right mix of frenetic, goofy and fun while also having a solid emotional core and not being afraid to get more serious. It’s like a Saturday morning cartoon that skews a bit older and puts a big ol’ smile on my face. Shrike and Beebs are strongly characterised while also having depth to them, and every episode tells me a little more about them while also making me want to know more.

There is definitely something more sinister bubbling up in the background, with political assassinations, power plays, intergalactic governments, a species ending-galactic wide cataclysm that has rendered a quarter of the galaxy uninhabitable almost 800 years later, and skeleton aliens!

The show currently has 4 episodes so it’s the perfect time to jump in now and get invested!

The art style is rad, with strong character silhouettes and bold colour schemes. Every single character has a vastly different body type and are animated with such care that they have a real sense of weight and motion - there’s real energy to it and there is nothing else out there that looks, sounds and FEELS like this show! It’s a zingy shot of lime juice in the savoury paella of indie animation!

The silliness of instant oatmeal

I knew about the oatmeal thing in Animorphs (I'm reading them for the first time, but heard about them for years in passing). But I've always seen it presented as part of a contrast. How the Animorphs books, being about war, but also for middle-school-aged children, balance this mix of serious and comical. How sometimes you get war crimes, trauma, heavy morals, and sometimes you get jokes about skunk spray and cinnamon buns and 'what if their weakness was instant oatmeal'.

Having now read book 17, the fact that it's something as mundane as oatmeal is actually integral to the weighty moral question. When pointing out that this is equivalent to drugging the yeerks, a lot of the pushback isn't just 'but this is war' it's 'come on, it's *oatmeal*. The fact that it's something ordinary to the characters and the audience is part of the point. The fact that it sounds kind of silly is what makes the moral slippage easier to excuse. Who cares if the kids fed the yeerks a bunch of oatmeal? That sounds like standard kid-adventure hijinks. The underlying theme would actually be weaker, I believe, if instead of oatmeal it was something less goofy- a kind of mineral, or a chemical compound. If the weakness the team found was some sort of alien super weapon, the question of ethics would be a lot harder to squeeze around. But this makes it clearer how the animorphs are justifying their escalating actions to themselves, how the slippery slope is slipping. Come on, this can't be a sign of them losing their morals or going too far, it's just oatmeal, right?

What did you think about Jade's role in the latest book 7 chapter? I found it hilarious how between the tweel's dreams his was more chaotic. It was also funny how they brought up Jade's motion sickness since I think the only moments it's been shown was in flight class and I think in Vil's playful land vignette after a rollercoaster ride. I'm really curious about your own highlights ^~^

Honestly, I felt pretty meh about Jade’s involvement in the Octavinelle update 😅

***Book 7 part 10 spoilers below the cut!!***

His own dream segment was alright, it got a few chuckles out of me (though as expected, we didn’t really learn anything significantly new about Jade because of the shallow nature of the dream). Jade’s crybaby dream!Azul was about what I expected, but his dream!Floyd certainly wasn’t. The goofy face on his twin… It made me wonder how Jade truly sees Floyd. Does that weird face mean Jade sees his brother—who comes off as imposing to many others—as cute and harmless? Or does that mean Jade actually looks down on Floyd and thinks of him as a simpleton who likes to eat…? It’s hard to tell (personally I like the former interpretation), but it’s been fun looking at the different perspectives of the same information.

Something I find interesting is that the twins’ moments of waking mirror each other’s usual approaches to a task. Floyd usually foregoes a plan and prefers to use his fists to get the job done. However, he is slowly roused by reminiscing about his memories at NRC and the promise of being presented with a challenge. The final blow that shocks him awake is the presentation of a dream!Azul and dream!Jade who attempt to lure him deeper into the dream. Floyd doesn’t fall for it; in fact, he gets mad instead, and that fury, so biting and clear, snaps him awake. The opposite is true for Jade. He is someone who meticulously plans before acting, and would rather control the circumstances and use other roundabout methods before resorting to violence. But ironically, the master manipulator Jade is the one who falls for his own dream’s manipulations—all because he trusts himself above all else. He only wakes up because of a very strong physical force (ie Sebek’s UM) striking him. Prior to this, Jade was putting up a very good fight and the blows be was taking were not sufficient to wake fully him. So… Floyd, the brother who prefers brawns, woke up after reflecting and experiencing strong cognitive dissonance between his fake reality and bis true reality. Jade, the brother who prefers brains, woke up after being smacked the right amount. They woke up after experiencing an intense shock related to what is essentially the opposite of their preferred problem solving strategies.

I liked seeing Jade and Floyd fight! Book 7 is showing us a lot of things that were brief off-handed mentions elsewhere (like how Rook used to be in Savanaclaw, how Lilia is a war vet, etc.). The twins having violent brawls was previously brought up in Floyd’s Beach Wear vignettes, and it’s nice to be able to view the full extent of it ourselves. Floyd was NOT joking when he said they got into serious fights…

I have mixed feelings about Jade’s behavior within Azul’s dream. I’m NOT saying any of this is out of character or that all of his moments were bad. There were lots of little standouts (like Jade’s motion sickness, the passive aggressive “Azul-san”, smashing up the restaurant, and, of course, him and Floyd grabbing onto Azul and then trusting him to make it out on his own before choosing to let him go). Unfortunately, there were just as many examples of Jade wasting time and meandering, which I was a little annoyed about. The world might be done for if y’all don’t hurry it up 😭 You do NOT have the time to casually smash plant pots or to sit idly by and go “…………” while you watch Azul act like an idiot. I know you have a bigger brain than THAT, Jade. If you already knew what Azul’s weak point was, then you should be acting on it much sooner, not wasting my time like this.

I can see the reasoning for some of this to an extent. Jade is the type of person to drag things out; he wants to enjoy the show as others struggle to attain what they desire. The problem is that this segment still feels… forced or artificially drawn out simply because of the already established pattern of “well we gotta dedicate more time to the OB boy, we have so many other novel assets and scenarios to show off!!” There continues to be so little urgency while prioritizing showing off new assets or even things that seem cool in concept but may be lacking in execution because of how fast new stuff is being thrown at us. It’s just so frustrating because it creates this domino effect where the implication is that Jade doesn’t seem to be taking the situation seriously even though he, as an individual who is skilled in reading others + pinpointing their weaknesses AND as one of Azul’s close aide, should automatically clock what would reasonably wake him. But nooooo, Jade doesn’t do it right away because HEY, we need to create contrived scenarios where he, Floyd, and Azul have to use their UMs once each. Why? Because we have to follow the patterns we’ve already established in the updates before theirs! No other reason, we’re not allowed to stray from the formula! This is even worse when you think about how Jade was somehow unable to deduce that Azul would have moved the contracts to his own room… Like shouldn’t that be the FIRST place you think of, Jade????? No??? Is this an excuse so you can waste time using your Mouse mandated UM on dream!Jade to get the location??? 🤡 Okay, I guess…

The one last thing I have to note is that I’m so glad his and Floyd’s Groovies don’t show them crying. I feel like a lot of people were anticipating that because we previously had Kalim and Rook breaking down… However, it would be remiss to equate all the characters as being as emotional as those latter two are. (Lilia, Sebek, and Ortho were also limited story cards and none of them featured crying.) That’s not to say that I think the twins are incapable of expressing intense sadness, it’s that I don’t think they’d shed tears while attacking each other or Azul. Not crying doesn’t make Jade and Floyd “worse” or “less emotionally available”. It, in fact, alludes to the strength of the trio’s bond. It means they trust the others to be strong enough to take the hits, to fight back and to survive. The same thing is demonstrated when Jade and Floyd willingly let go of Azul and allow him to sink into the darkness, even wishing him well before they do. And to that, Azul just says the same to them (in a smug tone). These three trust each other, and that is why the twins don’t shed tears; how can they cry when they fully believe the ones they’ve chosen to spend their time with are strong enough to make it out on their own?

Overall, I just 💦 do not like the rigid skeleton of these dreams… (which I’ve already expressed before here!) I’m so tired of the same thing back to back, and no matter how many details they try to change to make it cool or feel unique, it always comes at the cost of pacing or, in this case, some character integrity being removed. xbjsvskwjekw Maybe I’m just more sensitive about this since I hate it when a smart character has to actively be dumbed down in order to progress the plot in a certain way. This is a much more subtler of a dumbing down than what book 2 did with Leona, but… It still doesn’t leave me feeling very good 😔 If anyone has played the first Ace Attorney game, this feels a LOT like that part in case 2 where Phoenix is too dumb to check the back of a receipt until Mia literally tells him to. The character has to actively be made stupider because the scenario calls for it, and that really rubs me the wrong way.

In my older wip, there were a lot of action scenes with serious characters. It was far from great but to me it felt good enough for a first try on long fiction. Now in my new wip I have many action scenes with high-stakes but the characters are supposed to be goofballs, like Team Rocket or the Alpha Gang, but I'm not really good at writing goofiness between action scenes. Do you have any advice on how to mix these things?

Writing Funny (But Intense) Action Scenes 

Goofy Action

Not every swordstroke, pull of the bowstring, or pulling of the trigger have to be intense and serious. Show how characters just casually show off their “fancy” fighting skills just because they can. 

Holding an arrow between their teeth like a rose

Making whooshing sounds as they slash left and right, one sword in each hand. 

Whistling/singing during the fight 

Making fun of their team member during the fight, then nearly getting killed for not paying attention, but then casually deflecting the lethal blow with awesome fighting skills.

Use Snippets of Conversation 

Insert bits of banter in between. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a joke. 

Characters calling each other nicknames

Characters competing with each other while fighting: “I got two monsters while you were pitifully struggling with that green one. It wasn’t even that big!”/ “shut up.”

Use internal Dialogue 

Show characters making fun of their opponents as they fight 

Characters casually cursing and making jokes to themselves 

Characters commenting on other characters’ fighting: i.e. “Just one monster with one spear? I could easily get two!”

Characters complaining: i.e. “I should’ve finished that cocoa. My poor cocoa!”

Make Description Funny 

The tone is in large part determined by word choice/ use of figurative speech in description. Use expressions like:

He jumped over the obstacles quickly like a rabbit with its tail on fire. 

He waltzed into the battlefield, only it wasn’t elegant at all. 

She held off her enemies left and right, which made her look like a string puppet with a particularly mean owner. 

Apart from the fact that his grunts couldn’t be distinguished from the zombies’, he was doing fine.

Lighthearted action scenes are some of my favorites to read! Do remember to balance off all the joking, banter and funny actions with some serious blows, to remind the readers how high the stakes are.

I wanna know who your favorite vinsmoke sibling is so bad actually please tell me 👀✨

My friend and my brother laughed at me when I told them my favorite Vinsmoke is Niji, and I genuinely was embarrassed that day because I didn't really know much about him at the time (I think I had only watched a few eps of WCI) and it's pretty clear in the show that he's, uh, the worst of the Vinsmokes. And by "the worst" I mean: The one who's portrayed as the worst because he's the most active one when it comes to abuse and supremacism within the family line. Unlike Ichiji (who's more serious) and Yonji (who's more playful, somehow) Niji is the one who has to actually fight for a role in his family and that's why I think he's so fucking annoying all the damn time. I hate him. I love him. I want to hug him. But also I wouldn't mind punching him very, very hard. I have mixed feelings, but yeah, Niji is my favorite Vinsmoke. And you haven't asked why, but I feel the need to do some sort of mini argument about this because I am a very resentful person and I want to show my friend and my brother that Niji is actually a very interesting character!! And my fiancé thinks I just like him because he's hot, and she's right but only like a 20%. Maybe 40%.

I will try to put my thoughts into words, but it's pretty difficult because I have a lot of things to say about this blue evil gremlin.

I like Niji the most because I think he is, between the three brothers, the one who shows feelings and ambitions outside their emotionless selves the most. I know they technically are the same, but I don't think so (btw, please assume I'm not including Reiju in this text because she's canonically different from them and I'm just referring to the brothers).

As I mentioned before, I think Niji is the one brother who is the most annoying and evil because he feels the need to stand out. Ichiji is serious, and calculative and has a secure place in the family. He is the number one, even if Reiju is the oldest (I would like to talk more about how Reiju, being a woman, even if she's the oldest, she's the number 0. Because she is the oldest but she's a woman, so she obviously doesn't and would not be able to wear the number 1 like a man would. She is the oldest and yet, she has less significance in the family line than Ichiji. But, yeah, this is something that has nothing to do with Niji, sorry). Ichiji, like all of his siblings, wants recognition from his father, but he doesn't have to try as hard as the others to be impressive because he is, after all, the oldest. The typical "older sibling in an abusive household who has to deal with all the bullshit to protect their siblings"? That's something Reiju took over. That's Reiju's responsibility as the oldest and the woman. Ichiji literally doesn't have to do anything besides leading the team and being the evil, emotionless machine his father created. That does not mean that I don't think he could be able to develop more feelings, because I think he could and I love the concept of him being the first one to protest against Judge's behavior, but you get me. When you're the oldest brother with an even older sister, your responsibilities are pretty limited. So he doesn't have to be anything but there and himself.

Yonji, on the other hand... He is the youngest. Even younger than Sanji. He doesn't have to try, because Niji and Sanji should be the ones to do so. Little siblings are not expected to do much besides existing because irl parents are usually tired of raising children and they end up either getting neglected or seen as decoration. As a little sibling myself I can confirm that these things affect really badly to your brain growing up, but I got a more Sanji treatment so I can't speak for Yonji here. The thing I can say, though, is that in comparison to Niji, Yonji is just there. He's silly and goofy. He's funny. He's dumb. He has the excuse of being the little one to act that way. Getting lost eating or doing whatever. Even the fact that his powers are more physically focused instead of power/intelligence centered shows that he can just punch away his issues. He's the gym bro of the siblings. Don't expect much from him. <- Thing that's often said about little siblings, btw, and affects real fucking badly in early teenage years. The fact that he's portrayed like that is so on point tbh but after all, they don't have high expectations for him, so little to no effort is everything he does.

Then there's Niji, of course. My favorite. Love him. Hate him. Whatever. Niji is the middle child. And God, do I have to say things about middle siblings.

The thing about Niji is that he actually has to try and make a name for himself in the family because otherwise he'll probably get forgotten. I often wonder if he had that fear of becoming the next Sanji once he "died" (he's the only one genuinely asking if Sanji died on them before Yonji and Ichiji say they don't care) because his role is not as noticeable as the others. Reiju is the woman, Ichiji is the successor, Sanji is the weakling getting bullied (being technically one of the little siblings but still being in a limbo of middle/youngest because the little one is Yonji), and Yonji is the little one. Then... What's Niji?

Niji needs Sanji way more than he's willing to admit, and I love that. I absolutely love how he's written because he constantly shows that he needs Sanji, through both words and actions. He needs him because without Sanji's existence -without Niji being his bully- Niji is nothing but number 2. And there's nothing more frustrating than being the number two when it comes to family hierarchy. Not going to mention every little thing he does, but as I said, I love how well-written he is. He's the sibling Oda uses the most to show the abuse Sanji went through, but that's only because Niji is the only one who needs to do that. Niji is the one to talk to Sanji first, all the damn time. He gets angry when Sanji doesn't respond. He gets angry because Sanji can't be bullied anymore. He gets angry out of fear, in my opinion, because if the weakling can't get abused anymore, then he's not worth anything. If Sanji isn't the third, the second one is left alone. 2 can't fight 1 because 1 has the protection of starting the line. And 2 can't fight 4 because there's a missing link that keeps 2 from 4. So Niji is mad at Sanji because Sanji isn't the same weak crybaby he used to be, and he can't use him anymore to be secure and safe.

That's fucking horrifying when it comes to family hierarchy.

I like Niji because, despite being an asshole, he has reasons to be like that. First of all, because his father literally made him this way. But also, the little feelings he has (selfish emotions, yes, evil. But they're feelings, anyway. Urges. He's supposed to be emotionless and yet he knows how Sanji feels enough to use that to his advantage) are used as a way to feel superior and safe because he feels inferior. I think he's the one showing more emotions out of the three, even if those emotions aren't healthy or good and it's just him being angry all the time. That means that if he has urges and needs like that, even if he doesn't fear his own death, he could end up developing more and more empathy. His type of empathy comes from a place of fear. He feels what Sanji feels. And it's not that he doesn't care (I mean, I am aware that he technically doesn't, but let me dream) but it's just convenient for him not to care and keep bullying him to secure his place in the family.

Also pointing out that I like Niji because, being the one who says he hates Sanji the most, he's the one to protect him with his own body when that scene of the siblings helping Sanji escape happens. The others only clear the way, Niji stays with him. There's a really cool post about this on Niji's tag somewhere!!! I personally think he does this because, as that post said: Niji keeps seeing Sanji as weak, instead of believing in him enough to just clear the way. He protects him because he thinks he can't protect himself. Because he's weak.

And yes, it might sound offensive and emotionless and it doesn't make Niji a better person. But it makes him an older brother. Believing in Sanji would be great, but thinking that he's weak and needs protection after years of projecting on him only shows that the weak one is Niji. That he wants and is willing to protect his brother, too. If he didn't care about his well-being he would've just cleared the way for him, not caring about what could've happened to Sanji. But he goes all the way to help him out and protect him longer than the others did. Idk. I find that a very beautiful way of ending their relationship.

All of this being said, I have to be honest with you: When I said I liked Niji for the first time I only did it because people around me kept saying he was the worst one and it bothered me because I found his design pretty fucking cool. And tbh when he started being an actual character? I loved him even more. Because during WCI he's a fucking asshole but the way he acts towards Sanji is wanting to get a response from him, and I just find that so curious and complex... Like, if he just wanted to be evil he'd be more the Doflamingo type. But Niji looks for a response in Sanji's eyes. He wants to feel powerful because he knows he isn't.

And also, well, he's very cute and I like his hair a lot and he makes me furious sometimes which is great because if a character doesn't make you want to punch him at one point, is he really a good character? Look at him! He deserves to get slapped in the face. But also, I would love to kiss him afterward. What's that Olivia Rodrigo lyric? Ah, yes: "I wanna break his heart, then be the one to stitch it up. Wanna kiss his face with an uppercut." That's how I feel about him.

I really hope it's obvious, with all of this, that "Succession" is one of my favorite TV Shows, because I could go on and on and on (and nobody would listen but idc) about how the Vinsmokes are just the Roy family. Both One Piece and Succession deal with family in which hierarchy is crucial in a very specific and accurate way. It makes me sick. I love it.

"My feelings on" part 9: Resetting lady, how it uses too much edginess and shock value, examples of edginess done well.

I normally can reread a book rather easily even if it was awful but this one took the whole cake, it was painful to go back and fourth to read.

Synopsis: essentially the FL Karen has died and came back over 100 times (the exact number can vary based on translation but it's usually 117) and because of the endless cycle of dying, regressing, trying different tactics only to die again. Karen officially goes off the deep end and becomes a lunatic.

The synopsis sounded like the beginning of a creepy pasta which really intrigued me into reading 20 chapters but after 5 chapters it stopped being interesting and just got confusing. So to keep readers interested, I've noticed that the plot of resetting lady relied on shock value from it's edgy story line. Within the first few chapters Karen already kills someone via strangulation, at first you think it's Isella, a snobby rich girl who got Karen killed a few times before but its revealed it was actually a maid named Nancy (who also killed Karen in one of her past lives) and thats only one of the deaths. Now obviously that doesn't make the story bad on it's own, after all the summary of the book tells you she's going to murder people.

HOWEVER it's how its executed that makes it honestly cringe worthy. The vibes I got from Karen seemed like a mix of Jeff the killer and someone's joker impression. Like a self insert you'd make when you had a bad day and you want something to get that anger out of you. There's also times where there's just little build up and BOOM! someone dies by Karens hands, some of the characters honestly don't even deserve death.

The plot also jumps back and fourth and since the translation isn't that great it became tiring to actually read it. The ortolan chapters for example started out with a good idea of the dishes resembling greed but then it just got dragged out and confusing. I see what its trying to do but ehh.. it feels as if less effort was put into it so all the time could be spent on the blood and violence, most of it is either just political story lines that get dragged on or a true crime plot

Its not like it's impossible to have edgy content either there's 2 ways edginess can work.

1: serious plot with balanced edginess

Sister im the queen in this life is an example of a serious plot with balanced edgy humor, I may not like it too much but it balances the edgy tone with a light hearted moments relating to Arabella and Alfonso along with the blood and violent behavior being kept at a minimum, Ariande may be a little unhinged and is an evil person but she still works for the most part because her character doesn't feel embarrassing to follow all the time. Another example of media with a lot of edgy humor is an anime I'm a big fan of: Devilman Crybaby, a 10 episode anime that starts off with a lot of gore and TONS of sexual humor but evolves into a deep and tragic tale about two friends ever-growing toxic relationship and how it led to the sucker punch of an ending. I would explain further but honestly Devilman Crybaby is an anime you should watch yourself all the way through to get the full feeling.

The second example of how edgy humor can be done correctly is: A goofy storyline with lack of an actual plot full of as much edgy humor as possible. Now this style is less liked seeing as it's not for everyone (for good reason too) but sometimes you will find yourself a funny dark humored show or book that's just shock humor but it's the right setting and tone to have that level of edge lord humor. Robot chicken is an example of this style and yes it has started to devolve in a lot of ways but nevertheless remainds iconic for its style and humor.

What makes Resetting lady worse then these examples? It tries to be a serious plot with complex characters yet it still tries to hamfist in constant blood and death combined with long arcs that keep bouncing back and fourth. It doesn't have the entertaining plot to keep you invested and it's shock value humor gets old quick when you realize it's the same thing your supposed to be rooting for.

But by far the worst thing resetting lady has done was this

Karen SA's her fiancé and continously disrespects him when he tells her no. This was what really ruined Karen's character and honestly the entirety of the comic when you realize they want you to sympathize with a sexual abuser.

Now I'm the queen in this life and robot chicken dont handle SA great either but at the very least when there is SA you aren't expected to sympathize with the perpetrator, Resetting lady however pushes it to the side because she's unhinged and a troubled FL so that means she's immediately justified in the eyes of the narrative.

By now I stopped reading the rest of it because it was becoming a genuine chore.

Conclusion: Edgy humor and shock value have its place and making a story revolving around said humor isn't bad on its own as long as it's executed properly but resetting lady executes it in one of the worst ways possible, the humor is stale, most of the characters are either extremely unlikable yet your supposed to like them or they have little personality, only ones I was more interested in were Isella and Dulan.

I think I'm done with Dead by Daylight...

So Dracula just dropped, and with him Patch 8.2.0. There's a lot in there, most of it just dealing with the addition of the new Survivor and Killer, but nestled down in the MISC section is this:

Now, this might seem minor to anyone that doesn't play Killer in this game, but this is a Massive problem. In fact, up until an hour or so ago, I genuinely thought this was a bug. I figured it would be such a ridiculous thing for them to actually do on purpose, it was probably somehow related to how my character loses a foot in height right as the match locks in.

But no, it's actually intentional and it's actually horrific.

See, Dead by Daylight is an asymmetric competitive game. There are 4 Survivors to every 1 Killer, per match. Killers therefore need to know as much as they can about the Survivors at all times to properly manage their time and actions to even remotely stand a chance. They are facing up against the sheer action economy that is an enemy team four times as large as you.

So the first bits of information you get are in the pre-game lobby. You can see roughly what items the opposition is bringing in (unless they switch last second, as is common practice for Survivors) and their Prestige level serves as a decent estimate for how skilled a given player is going to be (even though it's per-character, and Survivor characters have absolutely no pros/cons between them).

Knowing if you're going to be facing a mixed bag of mid-range Prestige Survivors, or a group of P0 newbies, or an entire team of sweaty eSports-esque P100s talking over Discord can determine the entirety of the next match for you.

Personally, I prefer the former two groups. It's more relaxed, I can be goofy, I can try out silly builds or get to grips with a new character. Maybe I get a little bit of a challenge but it's all in good mirth.

The latter are nigh impossible to actually have fun with, because they will abuse every single little caveat given to them by the developers. Like the removal of grabs when a Survivor is unhooking, or the speed at which a Survivor can sabotage the hook you're walking towards, or the umpteen different ways they can avoid taking damage, or any number of the perks that tell them exactly where to run and get there at light-speed even against the fastest Killer characters. And they'll take every second to drag things out and besmirch you.

Killers now basically have to treat every single lobby as if it is that last category. We already had an uphill struggle given that the developers are famously pro-Survivor and anti-Killer, but now we have to do that with the basic foundational assumption that every Survivor we face is going to be the most toxic trash-talking tea-bagging pain in the ass the community has to offer.

So I think, unless some serious changes are made, that I'm just done with this game now. After 860 hours, we'll see if they can get any more from me.

Transcript: Heya! Tanooki here once again to give you a ted talk and critique the style of Miraculous once again! This time, it's in regards to its animation and how I feel about it.

To put it simply...the animation could be a whole lot better in my opinion. Why is that?

Miraculous's animation tries to hard to combine both 3D and 2D together. Combining those styles is not a problem! In fact, in certain circumstances, it can look amazing when put in the right hands!

Miraculous was never given that treatment.

First and most obvious point here, what the actual fuck are those facial expressions? No really what are they? I'm all for really weird facial expressions but...I dunno. They didn't think the facial expressions through at all.

It's obvious that the facial expressions were made for a more 2D look and from the looks of it, they weren't translated over well. The models do not line up with what they're trying to do. They slapped on the face and called it a day

Another point I have to make is that there are a lot of animation errors. I understand that animation errors are inevitable as we are all human and we all make mistakes...but...

Why are there so goddamn many!?

These are the 4 examples I have. While they're not much, there's a clear thing going on. There's either

Parts of their design completely gone (e.g. eyebrows)

Parts of their design they did not have (e.g. the green bangs)

Parts of their design changed slightly (e.g. hair and eyes)

There's so many of these mistakes here. I don't even know why. Was their animation software bugging out? Were they short for time or budget? Or were they lazy and cutting corners?

I'm not entirely sure...but these bits here prove that this show was better in 2D...

Which brings me to this...Ladybug PV. The early pilot of Miraculous Ladybug that had surfaced online not long ago!

There are expressions that while exaggerated look much better here. Characters designs look so much more interesting and there's a general sense of polish and detail put into this.

So why wasn't this used? Budgeting and keeping track of Ladybug's spots...

Those are some of the worst excuses I've ever heard. You can have 2D animation on low budgets and I can prove it.

I can definitely prove it.

Ladies and gentlemen. Persona 3. A game released in the year of 2006. This game was created by Atlus, around the time they were on the verge of bankruptcy.

I understand that the animation isn't perfect. Some parts are off-model and there's a general lack of shading in some areas however the rest of the animation looks amazing in terms of expressions, tone and designs throughout.

There's clearly a lot of work put into the animation despite everything happening. It goes to show that even on the tightest of budgets, you can give it your all and make something really good out of it.

However, those days are long gone and miraculous went the way of 3D. However, I've come prepared and now have 3 examples of games that combine both 2D and 3D.

Let's begin with

1. Klonoa 2 Lunetea's Veil

Klonoa 2 Lunetea's Veil's character expression, designs and look fit perfectly with the vibe of the game.

Facial expressions are sometimes goofy looking however they fit with the style of the game while also being funny. Even some of the more serious ones look good too!

The game uses a technique called 'cel-shading' or 'toon-shading' if you prefer to call it that. This makes the characters pop a bit more and separates them from background elements that could interfere with their designs.

It also looks good from a 2D/3D mix as well as the style gives off an anime/cartoon style look that helps make the game look a lot better.

This was in 2001 btw.

2. Persona 5/Persona 5 Royal

Persona 5 is an artistically beautiful game along with having a great story all about rebellion and fighting back against societal issues.

Like Klonoa 2, this game also uses cel shading and very much leans into the anime-like style it wants to go for while combining it with the vibes of manga and comic books.

The style not only works but looks beautiful no matter what system the game is played on (even the switch). It also incorporates 2D elements such as character sprites for expressions and other elements to help balance it out just a bit more and make things clearer to the player.

3. Guilty Gear Strive

Oh Guilty Gear Strive...not only are you a brilliant fighting game that has one of the best trans reps ever...but you also have excellent animation and designs.

Like holy shit any screenshots from Guilty Gear Strive looks brilliant and that's because while the characters are rendered in 3D, it does clever tricks with the camera to try and hide that fact and make it look 2D.

It also like the other 2 games uses cel-shading to add even more of a 2D anime vibe to it all. It just works so well because the animators know what the hell they're doing. It's also getting a show soon so that's even more of a testament (get it? Lol) to how good the game actually looks.

So overall, Ladybug's animation is not the worst but could be better.

I was rereading through your Underlust lore post because I want to try writing oneshots with your Ace (if you're okay with it) and I saw-

I am 100% okay with it, all I ask is that you show me it because it lowey means the world that you wanna write Ace qwq

As for how the main cast acts, well here's some basic notes, I can always elaborate more if you want questions about certain characters

Asriel as I said is an adult and never became Flowey, he chills in the ruins because he's an introvert and a hermit. He does venture out occasionally if only to visit his parents and some friends, he's largely welcoming toward the player character but kinda...cheeky. He has some snarky little shit energy, similar to the sass Flowey gives but toned down. He's not above flirting either but he only does it to joke as I said he's aroace. Fun fact, in one the endings where the player character chooses to stay in the underground you can become his roomie and live in the ruins.

I say before he kind of plays a similar role to Toriel & Papyrus, he introduces you to the ruins, explains puzzles, gives some lore, gives you a phone to use, etc. He doesn't try to stop you from leaving the ruins but he is hesitant, he gives a big speech and tells you off the bat "hey you can't leave the underground without killing a boss monster, which are all my family soooo-"

This is where you would enter those theoretical argument/convo battle segments, where you have to convince Asriel you won't do anything bad. How you two part depends on your choices, what you say, etc. This will also affect how Asriel treats you for the rest of the game, since if you call him he does answer and gives you advice, tidbits, lore, etc. Another fun fact is that Asriel is the one that calls you at the end of the game, not Sans and again the choices you made will affect how he treats you

I will say if you went the route of killing a boss monster to escape (I.e asriels parents and/or siblings) & promised Asriel you wouldn't hurt any of his loved ones when leaving the ruins then he is understandably very mad at you.

Toriel & Asgore as mostly the same, again, they are older due to Asriel never dying in this AU thus they kept aging. So they have wrinkles, grey hair, Asgore wears glasses, etc. Both are certified glifs to be sure. They are both still together and have their own harems, but in their old age it doesn't seem like they have much interest anymore. The downside of aging is having a lower sex drive lol.

Both are noticeably less prudish though, especially around the player character. More likely to crack sex and raunchy jokes, but they're generally just two old soft people. You don't actually meet either of them until the very end of the game, but this does largely depend on how you handle your encounter with Undyne (more on that later)

I talked about Sans plenty so I'll go onto Papyrus for right now

As I said he's not a sex worker, he's a bodyguard for the MTT resort and mainly in charge of keeping his brother (alongside other performers) safe from creeps. He is still Papyrus, goofy, wacky though a bit more serious as he takes his job of protector very seriously. Wants to join the royal guard still is largely doing this gig for a mix of several reasons

A. Keeping his bro safe B. He gets to be close to Mettaton C. Security is a good stepping up into millitary

He's still a Mettaton fanboy, but since the two actually hang out and work together (possibly might be hooking up too but unclear), it's more like he's just super supportive of his bestie. Still trains with Undyne but there's no "I must capture a human!" type of mentality, he's all about just training himself to be impressive enough that they have to let him in. He's also not scared to be aggressive, like he doesn't attack or try to capture the player character but he's not afraid to rough up any clients that cause problems for the workers at the MTT resort

Mettaton I also rambled about in my big epic lore post, personality wise he's largely the same. There is a very strong sense of elegance and pride to him though, like the MTT brand is even more extensive in this AU and you bet your sweet ass he's proud of it. Fun fact while you do get a segment to perform with him like in normal UT, he also offers you a job to work as a performer in his hotel. A human would bring in several crowds he insists

Fun fact, Burgerpants is largely the same but copes with his job via smoking A LOT OF weed so he's constantly stoned

Onto Undyne, she's a lot less aggressive in this AU due to the royal guard being less intense and again there's no order to attack any humans that fall. You actually encounter her in Snowdin where she's seen hanging out at a bar and watching a strip show with other guard members, again, she's a lot more laid back here. She does consider bringing the player to encounter Asgore but only follows through if she has a reason to suspect you'll cause trouble. Also she isn't missing an eye in his AU and she & Alphys are already dating by the time they player falls, open relationship tho since is the standard for this Underground (strict monogamy is pretty rare lol)

Alphys is largely the same, but she doesn't stalk the player from the star and isn't aware of them until they enter the waterfall. She is still plagued with guilt and suffers from heavy self esteem issue but she doesn't try to trick you with the whole malfunctioning robot bit (even if she wanted to Mettaton would not go along with it in this AU), she solely works on tech swearing off ever touching drugs and booze...if you read the og lore post you know why. She's trying to 'redeem' herself via working on giving the underground better tech, better ways to broadcasts shows, etc, helping other ghosts find proper bodies like she did with Mettaton etc. Definitely still needs therapy but better than she was handling herself in UT, Undyne helps her out and is aware of what's going on too

I think that's everyone, anyone else either is the same, has minor changes (for example Muffet works at the MTT Resort too but she's still just Muffet), or isn't around due to the nature of this AU (Frisk, Chara, Flowey, etc)
