I had to cover the new LEGO Disney Princess for work and let me just say, they hurt my feelings with that ditzy-bloodthirsty version of Snow White.

I hope the Lighthouse is full of weird looking magical things/artifacts/tools, that are just so old that simply no one knows what they were even made for, a bit like Howl's Moving Castle? Like, imagine there's a running gag or something where Rook and the rest come across a thing and everyone's like "Oh, better not touch that, we don't know what it does" and then they make a really big deal of how no one's allowed to ever touch. that. thing.
And then later on Rook has another Fade Call with Solas and they have this very serious conversation, when Rook just casually interjects "Oh yeah btw, what is that thing?" and Solas just sighs and waves it off in passing, super annoyed "Ugh, that's just an ancient elven bottle opener. Are you even listening to what I'm saying—"

Thank you to everyone who suggested I read Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. A man having a massive tantrum over hair dye, to the extent that he covered a house with slime and wailed so loudly he terrified an entire town, is my favourite.
And that's not even mentioning how wonderful it is that the narrative is so locked into Sophie's worldview that the tiny glimpses we get of other character's perspectives overturns everything you thought you knew as a reader.

i think it's objectively very funny that i got Memory of Sadness DIRECTLY after i completed bonnie's pre-castle quest/taught them how to fight. like okay. imagine you're bonnie. you're with siffrin, he teaches you how to fight, you hug and have a nice moment. he promises to protect you no matter what. you're a little nervous because he just stumbled and tripped because of his eye but it's alright. surely he wouldn't lie to you. fast forward to the next day and you walk into the dungeon and see a sadness. you're excited, because you're gonna get to fight with everyone and show off your skills, and then siffrin breaks off from the group and absolutely fucking eviscerates it. just fucking atomizes it. you're terrified. odile is terrified. mirabelle and isabeau are terrified. siffrin finishes beating this sadness to a pulp right before your eyes and then turns around, smiling for probably the first time since trained together, and goes "i got it!" and then presumably shoves his hand into a floating tear the second he sees one or immediately otherwise kills himself on the spot

Ghost Castle was released before PLA, so the lore revealed in that game doesn't factor into our writing, but we were chatting about what Ghost Castle might have been like if we'd written it later. I think the plot would be more or less the same except Tina would be even cagier about making friends, given his first ever friend was That Fuckin' Guy
anyway i doodled what tina might have looked like. small and resentful and throwing tantrums to make his mom pay attention to him 🙄

Castles in the Air
I'm extremely excited to announce that the game I've been working on for the past 4 years is coming to Kickstarter! Castles in the Air (CitA) is a tabletop RPG inspired by the novels of Louisa May Alcott and L.M. Montgomery. Players start as children with boundless dreams who will change over the years based on the relationships they form and choices they make. I think it's a really special game, and I'm looking forward to being able to share it with everyone.
For more information or to sign up to be notified when the Kickstarter launches on May 14th, please check out the game's page on the Storybrewers Roleplaying website. If that name sounds familiar, Storybrewers is the company that created Good Society: A Jane Austen RPG. I feel very honored that they reached out to me about publishing Castles in the Air. While Castles in the Air is a standalone game, its mechanics are inspired by Good Society, and if you like Good Society, I think you'll like CitA too as it allows you to tell similarly compelling stories.
I will be creating some blog posts talking about the literary inspirations for different parts of the game in the weeks leading up to the Kickstarter and during its run. I will be using this as a master post to keep track of all of them, so make sure to check back here or follow my blog if you are interested.
