What wouldn’t I give for an Anne of the Island adaptation, with four seasons just focusing on the college years. All of the Anne of Green Gables tv/movie versions start with the first book which makes sense, but they always peter out at the end (I will never forgive Anne With An E getting cancelled before their five season plan was complete). The college years could have so much friendship and silliness and yearning in it with Anne and Gilbert.

I asked you a question over two years ago, Anne. If I ask it again today will you give me a different answer?
Still Anne could not speak. But she lifted her eyes shining with all the love-rapture of countless generations, and looked into his for a moment. He wanted no other answer.

What a surprise! Another new "Anne of Green Gables" anime is currently in the works. The new adaptation will be titled "Anne Shirley" and it is said that it's story will be based on first three "Anne" novels - "Anne of Green Gables", "Anne of Avonlea" and "Anne of the Island". The anime will be scheduled to be released on April 2025.
As for someone who had watched a lot of classic literature based anime for a long time, I think that news is some sort of slap in the face to Nippon Animation, an anime studio known for making a lot of anime based on novels particulary the "World Masterpiece Theater" series. Considering Nippon Animation is planning to have 50th anniversary of that studio next year, seeing a certain animation studio having interest of doing an anime adaptation of the novel is a sign that the former should never rely on their nostalgia and try to step up aside from selling merchandise. It also means there are people in animation studio in Japan who believe there's still a market to these kind of anime. Here's hoping that the new "Anne of Green Gables" anime will receive well.

I think it’s time we should all admit that Anne of Green Gables is one of the most well written pieces of literature ever created, and frankly one of the best.

Anne Shirley (2025)
Debuting on April 5 in Japan 👒🍂🌿🌼🍁🍃
Based on the first three Anne novels by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery - Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island - comes a brand new anime! It will have a total of 24 episodes.
This is the first time books 2 and 3 are animated but Anne has been previously adapted into anime twice: First in 1979 in a series based on the first book, and later in 2009 in a show based on Before Green Gables (the prequel book authorized by the author's heirs).

I'm on Chapter 6 of Anne of the Island, and Anne and Gilbert's conversation about sorrows and happiness struck me as kind of odd.
“I think, if ever any great sorrow came to me, I would come to the pines for comfort,” said Anne dreamily. “I hope no great sorrow ever will come to you, Anne,” said Gilbert, who could not connect the idea of sorrow with the vivid, joyous creature beside him [...] “But there must—sometime,” mused Anne. “Life seems like a cup of glory held to my lips just now. But there must be some bitterness in it—there is in every cup. I shall taste mine some day. Well, I hope I shall be strong and brave to meet it.”
Reading this, I thought, Did LLM forget about Matthew?? In AOGG, Matthew's death is treated as a major event, which changes Anne forever. It's strange to me that Anne and Gilbert both talk of a "great sorrow" as a hypothetical future event, when Anne has already experienced it with Matthew.
Anne's first sentence seems to be speaking about the future, so that makes sense to me. But the rest of their conversation seems to imply that Anne has not yet faced any significant sorrow or trial. Especially "there must be some bitterness in it... I shall taste mine someday" as if Anne isn't already an orphan who spent the first eleven years of her life neglected and friendless, who lost someone very dear to her only a couple of years ago. Idk, it just feels out of place to me.

This reread of Anne of the island, I’m struck when she finds the letters her parents sent each other. Specifically the one about her as a baby.
She was so so so loved. Anne imagines her mother praying and hoping and waiting to meet her little girl, going through the pains of labour, being delighted in her baby, and then being taken away too soon.
Compare this with Anne’s house of dreams where Anne is in the role of mother. Praying and hoping and waiting to meet her little girl, suffering through labour, being delighted in her baby, but this time it’s the baby taken away.
Both times Anne is left bereft.

Gilbert Blythe being like "guess I'll die" after the girl of his dreams rejects him and then actually almost dying for real is the most iconic thing I've ever seen. Bare minimum if you ask me

Anne of the Island - Chapter 28
“Oh, no. I wouldn’t want to marry anybody who was wicked, but I think I’d like it if he could be wicked and wouldn’t. Now, Fred is hopelessly good.” I don't think Anne would write Averil's Atonement the way she did a couple of years ago, today. I do enjoy the little ways in which we glimpse Anne's growth as a person through her years at college.
I think Anne is feeling Diana's loss even more keenly without Gilbert's companionship. Diana is getting married and moving away, Jane already has moved West, Ruby is dead, and Gilbert doesn't really keep in touch. That's a lot of change for a young woman to handle in about 2 years. Sure, she has her college gang but there's a huge sense of loss with Anne's girlhood definitively over, marked not only by her own transition, but also by those of people who grew up with her.
I'm super curious about how Avonlea found out about Gilbert's proposal and Anne's response? I don't think Charlie has the wits to guess so accurately. I also somehow don't think Anne would've told Diana. She holds certain things sacred and this would be one of them. Which makes me think either Gilbert's family guessed from his behaviour/their visibly strained friendship. Or Gilbert himself mentioned it to someone in his circle. What if Gilbert told Fred lmao? That would be very in line with that piece of fan art someone had posted of a drunk frat boy Gilbert crying over Anne.

I don't think if many people (or anyone at all) can relate to this post, but i see that many people were fans of Harry Potter or Percy Jackson or hunger games as kids, but i was an aogg kid from the very start. I read all 8 books when i was 9 or 10, and i reread it several times over the years, everytime with a new outlook on the world and myself.
Everything about it is nostalgic to me, from the moment Anne met Matthew in the train station, to her friendship with Diana, to her holding a grudge againts Gilbert for 5 years, to her silly mistakes in the first and second book, to her finding new friends in college and Ruby's death in the third book (which was hard to take tbh), to all those letters she wrote to Gilbert in the 4th book, to her marriage and the death of her first child, her meeting captain Jim, Leslie and Miss Cornelia in the 5th book, the 6th book where her children's adventures begin; the 7th book and the arrival of the lovely Merediths; and finally, the last book and the shadow of war over Anne's life, Walter's death and at last, her sons' homecoming and the beautiful ending which brought Rilla and Ken together. It's just that when you read the books you basically follow her all the way from her childhood to her girlhood and then womanhood, and then you start loving her children just as much as you love her. You live in Green Gables and Windy Poplars and Ingleside, you watch her grow old. You follow two generations of the lovliest people in literature. To me it was aogg from the very start and I'm glad about that, reading and rereading it is always somehow the reassurance that I need that the world isn't that horrible of a place, it's just messy, and in dire need for a cup of tea and good old friends you can visit old gardens with on your birthday :)
