Anne of the Island - Chapter 19
"Miss Stacy told me long ago that by the time I was twenty my character would be formed, for good or evil." Rare Miss Stacy L. People change all the time. Even in fundamentals of character. It's the best and worst part of being human.
“She’s not quite as goodlooking as you, maybe, but she’s got a far handsomer nose.” “I know it,” conceded Phil. LMAO Aunt Jamesina ensuring NO ONE gets too uppity at PP.
"I’d marry Gilbert Blythe if he were rich." No one can convince me that Phil doesn't do this shit on purpose.
“Oh, would you?” said Anne, rather viciously. This is such a rare emotion from Anne. Anne can be short-tempered, impulsive, impatient, self-righteous, and many other less-than-pleasant things. But she's almost never malicious or vicious. That makes this even more telling for the reader (of course, since Anne herself is still comfortably in denial).
Does anyone know where Phil's quote is from? Everything I got from a cursory search loops back to this chapter from AoI.

What wouldn’t I give for an Anne of the Island adaptation, with four seasons just focusing on the college years. All of the Anne of Green Gables tv/movie versions start with the first book which makes sense, but they always peter out at the end (I will never forgive Anne With An E getting cancelled before their five season plan was complete). The college years could have so much friendship and silliness and yearning in it with Anne and Gilbert.

What a surprise! Another new "Anne of Green Gables" anime is currently in the works. The new adaptation will be titled "Anne Shirley" and it is said that it's story will be based on first three "Anne" novels - "Anne of Green Gables", "Anne of Avonlea" and "Anne of the Island". The anime will be scheduled to be released on April 2025.
As for someone who had watched a lot of classic literature based anime for a long time, I think that news is some sort of slap in the face to Nippon Animation, an anime studio known for making a lot of anime based on novels particulary the "World Masterpiece Theater" series. Considering Nippon Animation is planning to have 50th anniversary of that studio next year, seeing a certain animation studio having interest of doing an anime adaptation of the novel is a sign that the former should never rely on their nostalgia and try to step up aside from selling merchandise. It also means there are people in animation studio in Japan who believe there's still a market to these kind of anime. Here's hoping that the new "Anne of Green Gables" anime will receive well.

Anne Shirley (2025)
Debuting on April 5 in Japan 👒🍂🌿🌼🍁🍃
Based on the first three Anne novels by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery - Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island - comes a brand new anime! It will have a total of 24 episodes.
This is the first time books 2 and 3 are animated but Anne has been previously adapted into anime twice: First in 1979 in a series based on the first book, and later in 2009 in a show based on Before Green Gables (the prequel book authorized by the author's heirs).

“Why did you kill Maurice Lennox?” she asked reproachfully. “He was the villain,” protested Anne. “He had to be punished.” “I like him best of them all,” said unreasonable Diana.
and
“Anyhow,” resumed the merciless Mr. Harrison, “I don’t see why Maurice Lennox didn’t get her. He was twice the man the other is. He did bad things, but he did them. Perceval hadn’t time for anything but mooning.”
RIP Diana and Mr. Harrison you'd have loved tumblr. I can just imagine them trading gifsets of their sopping wet blorbo Maurice Lennox.

I don't think if many people (or anyone at all) can relate to this post, but i see that many people were fans of Harry Potter or Percy Jackson or hunger games as kids, but i was an aogg kid from the very start. I read all 8 books when i was 9 or 10, and i reread it several times over the years, everytime with a new outlook on the world and myself.
Everything about it is nostalgic to me, from the moment Anne met Matthew in the train station, to her friendship with Diana, to her holding a grudge againts Gilbert for 5 years, to her silly mistakes in the first and second book, to her finding new friends in college and Ruby's death in the third book (which was hard to take tbh), to all those letters she wrote to Gilbert in the 4th book, to her marriage and the death of her first child, her meeting captain Jim, Leslie and Miss Cornelia in the 5th book, the 6th book where her children's adventures begin; the 7th book and the arrival of the lovely Merediths; and finally, the last book and the shadow of war over Anne's life, Walter's death and at last, her sons' homecoming and the beautiful ending which brought Rilla and Ken together. It's just that when you read the books you basically follow her all the way from her childhood to her girlhood and then womanhood, and then you start loving her children just as much as you love her. You live in Green Gables and Windy Poplars and Ingleside, you watch her grow old. You follow two generations of the lovliest people in literature. To me it was aogg from the very start and I'm glad about that, reading and rereading it is always somehow the reassurance that I need that the world isn't that horrible of a place, it's just messy, and in dire need for a cup of tea and good old friends you can visit old gardens with on your birthday :)

Gilbert Blythe being like "guess I'll die" after the girl of his dreams rejects him and then actually almost dying for real is the most iconic thing I've ever seen. Bare minimum if you ask me

I'm on Chapter 6 of Anne of the Island, and Anne and Gilbert's conversation about sorrows and happiness struck me as kind of odd.
“I think, if ever any great sorrow came to me, I would come to the pines for comfort,” said Anne dreamily. “I hope no great sorrow ever will come to you, Anne,” said Gilbert, who could not connect the idea of sorrow with the vivid, joyous creature beside him [...] “But there must—sometime,” mused Anne. “Life seems like a cup of glory held to my lips just now. But there must be some bitterness in it—there is in every cup. I shall taste mine some day. Well, I hope I shall be strong and brave to meet it.”
Reading this, I thought, Did LLM forget about Matthew?? In AOGG, Matthew's death is treated as a major event, which changes Anne forever. It's strange to me that Anne and Gilbert both talk of a "great sorrow" as a hypothetical future event, when Anne has already experienced it with Matthew.
Anne's first sentence seems to be speaking about the future, so that makes sense to me. But the rest of their conversation seems to imply that Anne has not yet faced any significant sorrow or trial. Especially "there must be some bitterness in it... I shall taste mine someday" as if Anne isn't already an orphan who spent the first eleven years of her life neglected and friendless, who lost someone very dear to her only a couple of years ago. Idk, it just feels out of place to me.

Just a couple pals hanging out every waking moment. Taking each other to secluded apple trees no one else knows about. Definitely not jealous that they each walked home with someone else last night. No romantic feelings here at all.

Need a man to fall in love with me and pine for me for years, and when I reject his first proposal, his health gradually declines, until I return home one day to the news that he doesn't have long left to live, and it's on his death bed that I realise I've loved him the entire time, but it's okay because my friend has sent him a letter telling him that if he proposed to me again he'd likely get a different answer, and the glimmer of hope that I might love him back sets him upon a rapid, miraculous path of recovery
