#the big knit

Innocent Smoothies have just announced they're doing another Big Knit next autumn and something in me just unlocked: my not-quite-scrap-box immediately got raided and I've already cast on.

The Big Knit is a charity initiative Innocent Smoothies run in conjunction with Age UK where crafters knit or crochet tiny hats that are put on the smoothie bottles during the winter months and Innocent give 25p to the charity from each bottle sold.

More years ago than I care to admit (older than this blog by far) after inheriting two people's needles, and after the obligatory First Scarf, my first projects were the Innocent Big Knit Hats. I had to pull up the archive on three different tumblr blogs to even find these pictures, and they are from something like my second or third Big Knit contribution.

Today I’ve started with some oversized leftover mystery cotton rainbow hats, but who knows what inspiration will occur next?

i finally finished the blanket i’ve been knitting since january!!!! obviously the first thing i did was burrito myself in it and lay there for 10 minutes

Walking into a yarn shop like it's an art museum. Admiring all the colorways and textures of the various skeins. Nodding my head at the tasteful displays of handmade items by the local knitting/crochet group to demonstrate the different yarn brands. Talking to the owner to learn more about the local fiber art scene and learning about different dyers, and crafters in the area that I would have never found on the internet. Buying one too many skeins to continue my pursuit of creating beautiful things to bring joy into mine and others lives. My way of paying homage to this wonderland of fibrous beauty.

Fucking glorious.

The first batch of hats for The Big Knit! I have had some fun with these, reminding myself just how smol they need to be, and trying all the patterns people have made over the years. I’ve also used up a fair bit of my scrap box, which is great, (except Ma has just “donated” me a whole bunch more she found whilst clearing up a room at my Gran’s house) and I look forward to refining a little bit now I remember what I’m doing.

If somebody in your life offers to knit or crochet or, really, create anything for you, please be an active participant in the creation of the piece they are making. I adore making and gifting things, but nothing bums me out quicker than a person who passively just goes "okay," to my ideas about what I'm making them - it can send the message that they won't like it, or that they don't care, even if they're happy about my offering. The back-and-forth feedback is a great way to make sure that you are being gifted something that was truly worth the time, effort, expertise, and money that will inevitably go into the gift!

I know it's really hard to be an active participant, believe me, I'm an anxious ball of horror, but it will only do good for both parties to interact in this situation. It is a big deal to be offered a hand-crafted gift, but it's also something we want you to love and use, and that can only happen if you tell us what would make you fall in love with what we create.

Love your bg3 comics! I hope you don’t mind some world/lore building questions!

I was wondering why Kit looks so much more like Dorian than Astarion, and it got me thinking about how vampire genetics work. Do you think that the only physical traits that get passed down are ones from before becoming a vampire? That said, what do you think Astarion looked like before he was turned, and did Kit inherit any of those traits?

i think that would make sense!! i feel like pre-vampire astarion probably looked about the same but less pale and gaunt (personally i hc that he just went grey really early and i’m also in the brown-eyed astarion club)

honestly though, the real reason kit didn’t get anything from astarion is because the redleaf genes are too strong and they all look exactly the same

hate to be cynical on main but it really do be like this every single time a new "not like social media" art platform comes out of the woodwork and then people migrate to it in droves just to find out the only other people using it are other artists that they're competing with for any scrape of viewership from an increasingly oversaturated internet that didn't exist when we were teenagers in 2009
