Another Storer/Calo musical deep cut:
Tumblr media
Eddie Vedder, lead singer of Pearl Jam and the focus of so much of my adolescent thirst whose voice is featured all over The Bear’s soundtrack -
See: Vedder’s rapid-fire, gutteral one-two-three-four-five against one […] torture from you to me of PJ’s "Animal" over the end credits of 1x01 System or propelling the energy in Richie and Syd’s last ditch effort to save Friends and Family in 2x10 The Bear. See: Eddie (and Neil Finn) wailing And though we try to forget it, you will make me call your name, as I shout it to the blue, summer sky in "Throw Your Arms Around Me" over shots of Carmy making Syd's lamb ragu for Cl@ire while Syd undresses at home (this fucking show lmao) (also shout out to Melbourne/Naarm rock group Hunters & Collectors whose song Vedder and Finn covered). See: Eddie's yearning as he croons I've been planning out all that I'd say to you in PJ's "Come Back", as Carmy and Syd have metaphorical sex under a perfectly level table (shout out to @sydcarmyfan for that brilliant meta). See also: Vedder covering The English Beat's "Save It For Later" and singing, Save it for later, don't run away and let me down, you let me down in 3x02 Next while we see a litany of working class and racialised hospitality and food service workers gearing up for another work day in Chicago, just as Carmy is about to commence fucking over his working class and racialised crew at The Bear for the remainder of season 3 (this fucking show, gah) -
that Eddie Vedder, who is more commonly associated with Seattle and the grunge movement that was birthed there, was actually born in Evanston, Illinois: the same suburb of Chicago that its implied the Berzattos lived in (I say implied because its never explicitly stated on the show but we know that 2x06 Fishes was shot in Evanston). I always get a little chill up my spine when I come across connections like this on the show.
The Bear is such a love letter: to the food services industry, to film, to romance itself and almost certainly, to Chicago.
Author's note:
Enjoy this video of Eddie Vedder continuing to be a man after my own heart, talking about visiting his grandmother's old home in Evanston - a home he describes as the Sun that the rest of his family orbited around - which made me tear up because that's exactly how us grandkids felt about our Ammamma's apartment in Canada. Eddie talks about his grandmother having 6 kids and wishing he had bought the apartment to keep it like a time capsule, only to meet the current residents and changing his mind because it was a place full of "love and power and good vibes" that they took and also raised their 6 kids in. And all of this before launching into "Throw Your Arms Around Me" *sigh*
Its no secret that I love The Bear, but what I might love even more than the show itself are all the tangents, winding paths and deep cuts that it takes me to and which pull at my own memories and history. This art is so cathartic for so many reasons. And I doubt I'm the only one on here feeling that way.

Syd x Carmy- Music
This has been mentioned a few times but I wanted a compilation of songs and the importance of it in the show.
Senior, the producer concurred. “...But for us, music is part of the world of the show, and it almost would feel disingenuous to be dropping songs that we couldn’t relate to or that didn’t feel like they lived in this world, and only because they were popular for a different reason.”
I find the songs placed in the Carmy-Claire-Syd interesting which is why I put it in the post:
_______________________________________________________
1x05-Impossible Germany by Wilco
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is what love is for
To be out of place
Gorgeous and alone
Face to face
1x06- last train home by John Mayer
read @currymanganese post here.
2x05- can't hardly wait by the replacements
Fak: My first favorite album is Meet Me, which has the greatest high school song ever. "Can't Hardly wait"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll write you a letter tomorrow
Tonight, I can't hold a pen
Someone's got a stamp that I can borrow
I promise not to blow the address again
2x08- Throw Your Arms Around Me by Pearl Jam (cover)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and though I disappear from out of view
you know I would never say goodbye
and though I try to forget it
you will make me call your name
as I shout it to the blue summer sky
2x09- Strange Currencies by R.E.M.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These words, you will be mine
These words, you will be mine, all the time
Now fool might be my middle name
But I'd be foolish not to say
Honorable lyrics:
And I don't know what you mean to me
But I want to turn you on
Turn you up, figure you out
I want to take you on
2x09- Come Back by Pearl Jam
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If I keep holding out, will the light shine through?
Under this broken roof, it's only rain that I feel
I've been wishing out the days
Oh-oh-oh, come back
I have been planning out all that I'd say to you
Since you slipped away, know that I still remain true
I've been wishing out the days

Blowing chef kisses AKA Storer, I forgive you.
Tumblr media
Choose to enjoy one’s time by the water and let one’s future flow out on and in her honor
no words to fumble with i’m not a beggar to language any longer a state of mind only a god could come up with
and don’t get it twisted my heart’s still in it my dedication’s a star and it shines on our differences
and there’s love in the meantime i’m so proud of this moment in the stimulation here with you i’m so fucking honoured
can you feel me? can you feel what i do? i’m at the front of the moment and i’m blowing my little kisses to you, baby i’m blowing my little kisses can you feel what i do? i’m at the front of the moment
so don’t be mad if I choose to spend my time down by the water and I let my future flow out on and in her honor there’s no words to fumble with I’m not a beggar to language any longer it’s a state of mind only a god could come up with only a god could come up with it only a god could come up with it
youtube
This is the Sydcarmy song and it's sung from Syd's perspective.
Her heart is still with The Bear and the star she wants with him.
She's at the door of THE MOMENT, it's showtime! When she signs that agreement she's done and our Sydcarmy dish will finally be served!
This is the door of the moment because Carmy and her are not "together" yet, as a matter of fact, the context of all of this is basically the moment in which they were the most apart ever since she came back to him in Braciole.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
No more fumble, no more beggar of language vibes, they are beyond words, they are leaving soooo many things unsaid right now. This is it, this is the moment in which she finally lets her walls come down, when she thinks about leaving him and their dream together (their star) and realizes she can't and why. The walls are beginning to come down and it's all in the song. Her walls will be torn down by her choice. She will choose with her ❤️, not with her head. Syd will FINALLY MAKE HER MOVE and as the song goes: only a god could come up with it.
It’s all in here!
I ALWAYS BELIEVED IN YOU, STORER!

sydcarmy and the season 3 soundtrack
Susanna Hoff's 'We Close Our Eyes' was one of the songs playing in 'Forever'; S3E10.
The lyrics??
And if you come to me and if you touch my hand
I might just slip away. / I might just disappear, who am I / And if you think I'm worth it /And if you think it's not too late / You might start falling / If we don't try too hard/ We might start falling in love.
We're on a healing path/ We're on a roller coaster ride /That can never turn back /And if you love me/ And if you really try/ We'll make the seconds count/ And we can close our eyes.
We can make the seconds count????
We're on a rollercoaster ride?? That can never turn back??
Everytime I start to doubt Chris Storer he pulls me back in

The use of 'Goodbye Girl' by Squeeze-
This song is played in Season 2 Episode 3, when Syd leaves Carmy's apartment in anticipation of meeting back up with him at Kasama in an hour. However, as we know, their plans for meeting up are derailed when Claire calls Carmy for a favour. The first two verses paint a story that could potentially be interpreted in two ways: as a recounting of the casual sexual encounter that the singer had with his now ex-wife when they initially met; or as a recounting of the singer's affair with a woman who robs him while he's asleep, which precedes his wife leaving him. In either interpretation of the song the final grievance upon which the song rests is that the singer's wife has left him, and specifically in the version of the song released in the US, she's, "moved to Boston." Now I may be reaching here...but isn't Ayo Edebiri, who plays Sydney, from Boston? 🥴
youtube
If what I'm implying doesn't make any sense though, don't mind me- I could just be reaching Sesame Street style.
Goodbye Girl's full lyrics are under the cut:
[Verse 1]
I met her in a BAR ROOM
Her name I didn't catch
She looked like something special
The kind who'd understand
The room was almost spinning
She pulled another smile
She had the grace like pleasure
She had a certain style
[Chorus 1]
Sunlight on the lino
Woke me with a shake
I looked around to find her
But she'd gone
Goodbye girl
Goodbye girl
Goodbye girl
[Verse 2]
She took me to her hotel
A room on the second floor
A kettle and two coffees
A number on the door
She said I hardly know you
Agreed we kissed goodnight
I knew that in the morning
Somehow I'd wake to find
[Chorus 2]
Sunlight on the lino
Waking me with a shake
I looked around to find her
But she'd gone
Goodbye girl
Goodbye girl
Goodbye girl
[Verse 3]
I've lost my silver BRACELET
My club room locker keys
The money in the BILLFOLD
It doesn't bother me
My wife has moved to BOSTON
So Mug is not the word
If you ever see her
Say hello goodbye girl

Last Train Home - The Bear: Season One, Episode Six Ceres
Last Train Home by John Mayer has been playing intermittently in my mind since I started re-re-watching The Bear. I prefer the ballad version because I enjoy instrumentation. And I can appreciate the words better with the slower tempo.
youtube
This song is very important to me. It's a groove.
It got me in the mindset of turning points. There's so many layers that I want to explore. I want to do this analysis justice. And, I acknowledge that it will be all over the place. Looking at my notes and drafts...yeah. I'm at the, as I call, "Splatter Plate Draft" that we see when Sydney starts her own culinary journey in Season Two.

Hear you! Ayo has the power to end the misogynoir Shaningans in a heartbeat but she chooses not to, is like she chooses to ignore the elephant in the room. IK there are NDAs in place etc, but I wish she was less ambiguous and more straightforward in addressing that conversation, although maybe by contract she can't IDK... If half the fandom noticed the misogynoir I find it very hard to believe she didn't. It gets on my nerves too.
I smiled.

That’s something.
My only season 4 prediction for The Bear (atm) is that:
If season 4 truly is the last season of the show, the series finale is going to end with Pearl Jam’s “State of Love and Trust” playing over the final, end credits.
Aside from the song’s title being every Sydcarmy truther’s hope for our two fav Jeffs, I reckon we’ll hear the following significant lyrics at the end of the show:
And the barrel shakes aimed directly at my head
Oh, help me, help me from myself
And I listen from both sides of a friend
Nothin', I'll do this one myself
Myself, myself
Hey, hey
Hey, na-na-na-na, hey, that's something
Hey, na-na-na-na, hey, that's something
Hey, na-na-na-na, hey, that's something
Tumblr media
Author’s note: “State of Love and Trust” was originally included on the soundtrack for Cameron Crowe’s Seattle-based grunge romantic comedy, Singles. That movie featured cameos by a number of iconic grunge acts including Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and, hilariously, members of Pearl Jam as Matt Dillon’s band, Citizen Dick. Crowe also wrote and directed Say Anything, the movie poster of which is seen hanging near the chef’s coats in episode 3x09 Apologies of The Bear.
While I highly recommend folks listen to the original “State of Love and Trust” (and indeed the entire Singles soundtrack which was amazing), feel free to enjoy this short vid of me screaming along off key to it at the 16 Nov 2024 PJ show in Naarm (Melbourne) this past weekend.
