Benjamin Sisko is an amazing man, but it's still hilarious that so many people to fixate on him as their personal rival.

Dukat, Eddington, and Solok are the most notable three. And all three all wind up completely changing their personalities to revolve around one-upping Sisko and he winds up beating them anyway.

After Dukat destroys his career, he re-fashions himself into what is essentially the Emissary of the Pah-Wraiths. He's always been fixated on Sisko to some degree, but the final season takes it up to eleven.

Eddington becomes fed up with his career and projects his frustrations on to Sisko, re-imagining their relationship to be one where he's the noble criminal and Sisko the evil, relentless enforcer. But reality was never going to conform to his imaginings.

Solok, the Vulcan who was so obsessed with one-upping Sisko that he also developed an obsession with baseball. He drags his crew into it. He taunts Ben with it, makes things personal in a way the other two can't. In part because Solok is so incredibly petty. The other two are so grandiose in their methods, but Solok takes the petty route every time.

Watched the new Futurama episodes hoping it'd be better than the last season. That first episode was kinda dogshit ngl, exact same things I had gripes w last time. The second one was a lot better though imo! It didn't spell out what it was parodying quite as hard and put enough of a spin on it for it to work

YEAH kai gets that cool swinging so fast the bats on fire imagery too but he actually does set it on fire, i think most of the game dareths sitting in the dugout until they bring him in at the end and it turns out baseball is like, his one thing hes better at than the ninja. i also dont know how baseball works <3

YEAHHHHH he shows up day of with the fanciest cool fire themed bat and then breaks it hitting </3 AND sets it on fire AND still hits a foul. iirc you need like eight-nine people minimum so i’m imagining on short notice they’re scrambling for an eight and dareth conveniently shows up and then after being benched the whole game and backseat coaching he crushes it in the final inning. to everyone’s horror/surprise/delight

While American Pastoral by Philip Roth wasn't for me - I enjoyed parts of it, I appreciated what he did with it, but it's just not my kind of read - I can't deny I found a bunch of quotes in it that captured my attention (mostly during the first 3 chapters, before we get into the Swede's story):

The fact remains that getting people right is not what living is all about anyway. It's getting them wrong that is living, getting them wrong and wrong and wrong and then, on careful consideration, getting them wrong again. That's how we know we're alive: we're wrong.

It was one of those things that get torn out of you and thrust into oblivion just because they didn't matter enough.

[...] we go through life with a generalized sense that everybody is wrong except us. [...] we don't just forget things because they don't matter but also forget things because they matter too much.

Writing turns you into somebody who's always wrong. The illusion that you may get it right someday is the perversity that draws you on.

That can happen when people die - the argument with them drops away and people so flawed while they were drawing breath that at times they were all but unbearable now assert themselves in the most appealing way.

Avery is a certified TV sci-fi hottie as Benjamin Sisko in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The first black star trek Captain, he also negotiated his signature look - the bald head and goatee - against haters who thought a Captain should always be clean-shaven. Thank God for that, because he looks devastatingly hot in a a goatee (a phrase never before uttered). He went on to direct several episodes of DS9, use his pleasant voice to record music and multiple host documentaries, and mostly retire from acting to teach as a professor.

with that wonderful stentorian baritone voice he could move from intimidating commander to gentle and compassionate space dad...benjamin sisko is a man of many qualities, thoughtful, morally complex, understatedly hilarious, a lil unhinged, really really excited about baseball, and avery brooks never fails to breathe life, depth and dimension into the character and also did i mention his voice. fun fact he was a professor of theater arts at rutgers while filming deep space nine and would occasionally teach classes via vhs tapes recorded on set, complete with starfleet uniform. he also directed a number of ds9 episodes including notable ones like "rejoined" and "far beyond the stars", and performed many of his own stunts as sisko. stunt coordinator dennis madalone said, "of all the stars that I've worked with on all the Star Treks, and all the other shows that I've been on other than Star Trek, I've never seen an actor so physically capable of just doing everything...every time I'd bring in a stunt double, he'd be angry, sitting on a bench, because Avery was doing so great." he's also a distinguished stage actor and an accomplished musician and singer who's performed everything from jazz to opera. science has yet to discover whether there's anything this man can't do.
