The Baltic Way, or Baltic Chain (also "Chain of Freedom") was a peaceful political demonstration that occurred on 23 August 1989.
Approximately two million people joined their hands to form a human chain spanning 690 kilometres (430 mi) across the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which at the time were occupied and annexed by the USSR. The central government in Moscow considered the three Baltic countries constituent republics of the Soviet Union.
The 1989 event was organised by the Baltic pro-independence movements: Rahvarinne of Estonia, the Tautas fronte of Latvia, and Sąjūdis of Lithuania, to draw global attention by demonstrating a popular desire for independence and showcasing solidarity among the three nations. It has been described as an effective publicity campaign, and an emotionally captivating and visually stunning scene.
The event presented an opportunity for the Baltic activists to publicise the Soviet rule and position the question of Baltic independence not only as a political matter, but also as a moral issue. The Soviet authorities responded to the event with intense rhetoric, but failed to take any constructive actions that could bridge the widening gap between the Baltic republics and the rest of the Soviet Union. Seven months after the protest Lithuania became the first Soviet republic to declare independence.

After the Revolutions of 1989, 23 August has become an official remembrance day both in the Baltic countries, in the European Union and in other countries, known as the Black Ribbon Day or as the European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism.

Ok we arrived at the club door at 19:00, there was a queue system but it went to number 100 and stopped before we arrived. We left and went shopping, returning at club opening hour 19:30.
The club has four entrances and we just went upstairs to get a seat at the balcony like the retired citizens we are.
The doors upstairs opened first.

If we wanted, we could walk down the inner stairs and take the front row spots before the numbered people even noticed
But we stay upstairs 😊 I am super excited because I got exactly the spot I wanted. I will surely take some photos but they will be 5 pixel quality, sorry 😅
3 hours till show
(Feel free to come get your sticker)

Sadly I haven't yet been able to find recordings of all the songs from this book but I have So.Many.Youtube videos . of folk songs

August 23 marks exactly 35 years since one of the most historic episodes in the history of the Baltic states: the Baltic Way.
On August 23, 1989, Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians turned out in huge numbers to form a human chain weaving through all three Baltic States, making it clear to the world that opposition to Soviet occupation was stronger than ever.
Approximately two million people joined hands, forming a chain of over 600 kilometers through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, bravely defying the occupying forces.
One of the biggest achievements of the protest campaign was getting the USSR to admit to past crimes. The USSR acknowledged the existence of the 1939 Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact and declared it invalid. It was one of the most important steps towards the restoration of independence in the Baltics, and a landmark in the history of peaceful protest worldwide(..)

Lithuania: Raivis, Gilbert, I love you both and all, but can I ask what in the hell are you doing?
Latvia, trying to stabilize a tower of folding chairs that Prussia is sitting atop: Oh nothing much.
Prussia: I love you too :)

ask meme 9!
9. which of your neighbouring countries would you like to visit most/know best?
i have been to pretty much every country within a fairly broad radius around norway EXCEPT russia, which is not particularly tempting right now for,, you know,,, reasons.... though i WOULD love to visit someday in the future. eagle eyed audience members may also be aware that i'm currently living in sweden for a couple years, so i'm getting to know it whether i'd like to or not haha.
i really like iceland and finland! would love to explore finland some more, actually. and åland! i've only visited åland (a tiny island between sweden and finland) for a brief couple days, but i remember it being absolutely lovely. i would also like to visit svalbard someday, although that counts as part of norway.
