forewarning that this is mostly just an observational ramble
one thing I've gathered from looking around older western fantasy otaku sites is that, presumably in large part because of the order in which things entered mainstream consciousness, sauron is talked about pretty consistently as the final boss of the lord of the rings
technically, this is true of everywhere, but I want to emphasise that it is extremely common to see younger fantasy otaku a decade or two ago use ラスボス when explaining who he is, as a primary descriptor
[before going any further on this, it probably bears mentioning that the japanese translation of lord of the rings is a bit divisive. when it comes up, it's either in the context of how impressive the translation is (skews older) or in how unreadable it is (skews younger), because it's translated into antiquity prose. apparently exceptionally so, even for a fantasy novel, so it was very much extreme nerd shit]
a big part of this is, of course, just the idea of the final boss having more awareness than tolkien at the time the movies were coming out. I imagine almost the exact same thing would happen more or less anywhere that video games hit mainstream nerd awareness before tolkien did, but there's something else that I think might have something to do with it, because if you're looking at old enough threads, you notice that not only is sauron being explained as the final boss, but this is being mentioned in contrast to morgoth not being the final boss
which seems a bit random (morgoth doesn't exactly come up enough in lotr proper to cause this confusion), if you don't know that angband, where morgoth is the final boss and sauron is just the midboss, was pretty popular with western fantasy otaku. well, popular in the way that cult classics are, but you know how it goes
with that in mind, it makes sense that it was (at one point, before tolkien was more accessible through other channels) something people called each other fake fans over
so in a kind of interesting way, namedropping sauron in fantasy otaku spaces that skewed younger (for a time) was almost equivalent to namedropping morgoth in western fantasy nerd spaces. that all kind of stops being the case once you have the peter jackson movies immediately at hand, though
there's also the fact that, because it's a little harder to read lord of the rings in japanese, someone who's casually into the book is much more likely to also go ahead and read the silmarillion, which helped rings of power get incredibly popular with older audiences in japan when it came out. as a fun side effect of all this, there's a bit more morgoth x sauron shipping around

it IS kind of funny to me how professor oak is constantly framed as this great benevolent amazing professor to the point where they were even like "let's give this guy a cousin in alola who looks almost exactly like him because THAT'S what everybody wants to see in the games right" and then you pick up r/b/y or fr/lg and see how he treats blue and it's like Wow. This old man sucks. Somebody should kill him for sport. is he as bad as, say, ghetsis or lusamine? no. but he is DEFINITELY objectively awful. the games and professor oak framing blue as a bad trainer and person when he quite LITERALLY did NOTHING wrong (r/b/y has as many examples of blue being genuinely helpful towards his childhood friend as it does of him being an arrogant little twat, which is fine because. hello. he's 11. have you ever interacted with an 11-year-old) is soooooo irritating sometimes because like. in the VERY NEXT GENERATION you have a very clear example (silver) of what a kid mistreating their pokémon looks like (to the point where npcs are quite literally commenting on it left and right) and absolutely none of that is there with blue. glad to see he's flourishing now that he's fully moved to alola with red to run the battle tree and i hope he's blocked professor oak's number

Hello friend! I’m 1,000,000% obsessed with your Steddie dads ‘verse and I had an idea.
Which of the girls was the first to bring up the word “rizz”?
Which of the girls uses it the most?
Thank you in advance! ❤️
this is so funny because i was literally just thinking about this
I feel like Hazel is the first one to start saying rizz. As of early 2023 (when I feel like it really started to make its internet rounds), Hazel is two things – 1) chronically online, and 2) sixteen years old.
(Sidebar – rizz is def the first word that Hazel has to explain to Moe. The age difference between Moe and Hazel (five years) is very similar to me and one of my younger cousins and she has to explain pop culture shit to me constantly. ‘tis humbling to say the least).
Neither Eddie nor Steve really give it all that much though until it becomes Oxford’s word of the year. Then, they’ve got questions.
I feel like, out of the whole family, Steve is actually the one saying rizz the most, but he’s using it wrong on purpose to annoy his children (I feel like he does that with all the young-people terminology – he definitely would take a picture of the girls and say “this is a selfie, right?” knowing full well that it wasn’t).
He’ll be shuttling Hazel out the door for school or something and be like, “Let’s go, Haze. Gotta have that on-time rizz.”
“No.”
One time, when the whole family is home for a movie night (it’s Hazel pick – she goes with a nature documentary about bears to flex everything she’s learning at her vet internship), Robbie and Eddie are going on and on about how cute the bear cubs are, and why are they so fuzzy if you’re not supposed to pet them?
Steve’s response to this is, “You could say they’ve got that wild animal rizz.”
Cue Hazel and Robbie’s pained groans.
“Hey, I actually liked that one,” Moe comments, sounding vaguely impressed.

how does Miraak describe being skeletonized? 👀 Does he laugh about it now/even remember it, or was it horribly traumatizing? Does it upset Elentari?
OH, GOOD QUESTION, THANK YOU‼️ 👀
Miraak remembers everything.
he remembers dying in Elentari's arms and asking her to tell him about Sovngarde (because she would be his afterlife instead, and perhaps they'd meet in her dreams, he thought), and then learning her name with his last breath. he remembers the bright pain of his soul coming loose, and the strangeness of it settling inside her, like he was a second heart right beside her own. he remembers her travelling through time itself to find him, and how she'd kissed him to give back his soul, and how having a soul returned (or returning a soul!) hurts as much as having it ripped away.
(in his own words: “I remember how you carried my soul within you as safely as if it were your own, Elentari, Kundruniiki, vokriidi,” he continues to her profile, wondering what he would see in her eyes if he were to reach out, and with the gentlest touch of his claw-tipped fingers at the curve of her jaw, turn her to face him, “and how I knew no fear, so long as your feet were carving a path of stars for mine to follow. How you crossed entire rivers of time and cheated the Prince of Fate to salvage such an undeserving spirit as mine, knowing that he will surely hunt us to the ends of Nirn in return.”)
he won't laugh about it, but he's not exactly traumatised, either—he's just living with the quiet certainty that he survived, despite everything, and now he's here with a scar to show for it, just like Elentari herself. they have matching scars right over their hearts now, after all, from when they died and came back nonetheless!
and meanwhile, Elentari... very much doesn't like to speak of it yet. she struggles to even say the words "you died" or "you were dead" to him, because in her eyes, the fact that she brought him back doesn't erase the fact that she had to watch yet another person die as she tried to save them. maybe that will all change in time, though... 🤲
