reasons i hate rhato pt1

this pertains to v1 #1, so expect more at some point when i can stomach looking at it again. this is exactly what the title says. hey, do you like rhato? great, fuck off and don't read something that is going to upset you. i don't care what your good opinions are of this. the run sucks, and it deprives almost every other character of their personality for the sake of jason's character.

The point is control

Whenever we think or talk about censorship, we usually conceptualize it as certain types of speech being somehow disallowed: maybe (rarely) it's made formally illegal by the government, maybe it's banned in certain venues, maybe the FCC will fine you if you broadcast it, maybe your boss will fire you if she learns of it, maybe your friends will stop talking to you if they see what you've written, etc. etc. 

This understanding engenders a lot of mostly worthless discussion precisely because it's so broad. Pedants--usually arguing in favor of banning a certain work or idea--will often argue that speech protections only apply to direct, government bans. These bans, when they exist, are fairly narrow and apply only to those rare speech acts in which other people are put in danger by speech (yelling the N-word in a crowded theater, for example). This pedantry isn't correct even within its own terms, however, because plenty of people get in trouble for making threats. The FBI has an entire entrapment program dedicated to getting mentally ill muslims and rednecks to post stuff like "Death 2 the Super bowl!!" on twitter, arresting them, and the doing a press conference about how they heroically saved the world from terrorism. 

Another, more recent pedant's trend is claiming that, actually, you do have freedom of speech; you just don't have freedom from the consequences of speech. This logic is eerily dictatorial and ignores the entire purpose of speech protections. Like, even in the history's most repressive regimes, people still technically had freedom of speech but not from consequences. Those leftist kids who the nazis beheaded for speaking out against the war were, by this logic, merely being held accountable. 

The two conceptualizations of censorship I described above are, 99% of the time, deployed by people who are arguing in favor of a certain act of censorship but trying to exempt themselves from the moral implications of doing so. Censorship is rad when they get to do it, but they realize such a solipsism seems kinda icky so they need to explain how, actually, they're not censoring anybody, what they're doing is an act of righteous silencing that's a totally different matter. Maybe they associate censorship with groups they don't like, such as nazis or religious zealots. Maybe they have a vague dedication toward Enlightenment principles and don't want to be regarded as incurious dullards. Most typically, they're just afraid of the axe slicing both ways, and they want to make sure that the precedent they're establishing for others will not be applied to themselves.

Anyone who engages with this honestly for more than a few minutes will realize that censorship is much more complicated, especially in regards to its informal and social dimensions. We can all agree that society simply would not function if everyone said whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. You might think your boss is a moron or your wife's dress doesn't look flattering, but you realize that such tidbits are probably best kept to yourself. 

Again, this is a two-way proposition that everyone is seeking to balance. Do you really want people to verbalize every time they dislike or disagree with you? I sure as hell don't. And so, as part of a social compact, we learn to self-censor. Sometimes this is to the detriment of ourselves and our communities. Most often, however, it's just a price we have to pay in order to keep things from collapsing. 

But as systems, large and small, grow increasingly more insane and untenable, so do the comportment standards of speech. The disconnect between America's reality and the image Americans have of themselves has never been more plainly obvious, and so striving for situational equanimity is no longer good enough. We can't just pretend cops aren't racist and the economy isn't run by venal retards or that the government places any value on the life of its citizens. There's too much evidence that contradicts all that, and the evidence is too omnipresent. There's too many damn internet videos, and only so many of them can be cast as Russian disinformation. So, sadly, we must abandon our old ways of communicating and embrace instead systems that are even more unstable, repressive, and insane than the ones that were previously in place.

Until very, very recently, nuance and big-picture, balanced thinking were considered signs of seriousness, if not intelligence. Such considerations were always exploited by shitheads to obfuscate things that otherwise would have seemed much less ambiguous, yes, but this fact alone does not mitigate the potential value of such an approach to understanding the world--especially since the stuff that's been offered up to replace it is, by every worthwhile metric, even worse.

So let's not pretend I'm Malcolm Gladwell or some similarly slimy asshole seeking to "both sides" a clearcut moral issue. Let's pretend I am me. Flash back to about a year ago, when there was real, widespread, and sustained support for police reform. Remember that? Seems like forever ago, man, but it was just last year... anyhow, now, remember what happened? Direct, issues-focused attempts to reform policing were knocked down. Blotted out. Instead, we were told two things: 1) we had to repeat the slogan ABOLISH THE POLICE, and 2) we had to say it was actually very good and beautiful and nonviolent and valid when rioters burned down poor neighborhoods.

Now, in a relatively healthy discourse, it might have been possible for someone to say something like "while I agree that American policing is heavily violent and racist and requires substantial reforms, I worry that taking such an absolutist point of demanding abolition and cheering on the destruction of city blocks will be a political non-starter." This statement would have been, in retrospect, 100000000% correct. But could you have said it, in any worthwhile manner? If you had said something along those lines, what would the fallout had been? Would you have lost friends? Your job? Would you have suffered something more minor, like getting yelled at, told your opinion did not matter? Would your acquaintances still now--a year later, after their political project has failed beyond all dispute--would they still defame you in "whisper networks," never quite articulating your verbal sins but nonetheless informing others that you are a dangerous and bad person because one time you tried to tell them how utterly fucking self-destructive they were being? It is undeniably clear that last year's most-elevated voices were demanding not reform but catharsis. I hope they really had fun watching those immigrant-owned bodegas burn down, because that’s it, that will forever be remembered as the most palpable and consequential aspect of their shitty, selfish movement. We ain't reforming shit. Instead, we gave everyone who's already in power a blank check to fortify that power to a degree you and I cannot fully fathom.

But, oh, these people knew what they were doing. They were good little boys and girls. They have been rewarded with near-total control of the national discourse, and they are all either too guilt-ridden or too stupid to realize how badly they played into the hands of the structures they were supposedly trying to upend.

And so left-liberalism is now controlled by people whose worldview is equal parts superficial and incoherent. This was the only possible outcome that would have let the system continue to sustain itself in light of such immense evidence of its unsustainability without resulting in reform, so that's what has happened.

But... okay, let's take a step back. Let's focus on what I wanted to talk about when I started this.

I came across a post today from a young man who claimed that his high school English department head had been removed from his position and had his tenure revoked for refusing to remove three books from classrooms. This was, of course, fallout from the ongoing debate about Critical Race Theory. Two of those books were Marjane Satropi's Persepolis and, oh boy, The Diary of Anne Frank. Fuck. Jesus christ, fuck.

Now, here's the thing... When Persepolis was named, I assumed the bannors were anti-CRT. The graphic novel does not deal with racism all that much, at least not as its discussed contemporarily, but it centers an Iranian girl protagonist and maybe that upset Republican types. But Anne Frank? I'm sorry, but the most likely censors there are liberal identiarians who believe that teaching her diary amounts to centering the suffering of a white woman instead of talking about the One Real Racism, which must always be understood in an American context. The super woke cult group Black Hammer made waves recently with their #FuckAnneFrank campaign... you'd be hard pressed to find anyone associated with the GOP taking a firm stance against the diary since, oh, about 1975 or so.

So which side was it? That doesn't matter. What matters is, I cannot find out.

Now, pro-CRT people always accuse anti-CRT people of not knowing what CRT is, and then after making such accusations they always define CRT in a way that absolutely is not what CRT is. Pro-CRTers default to "they don't want  students to read about slavery or racism." This is absolutely not true, and absolutely not what actual CRT concerns itself with. Slavery and racism have been mainstays of American history curriucla since before I was born. Even people who barely paid attention in school would admit this, if there were any more desire for honesty in our discourse. 

My high school history teacher was a southern "lost causer" who took the south's side in the Civil War but nonetheless provided us with the most descriptive and unapologetic understandings of slavery's brutalities I had heard up until that point. He also unambiguously referred to the nuclear attacks on Hiroshmia and Nagasaki as "genocidal." Why? Because most people's politics are idiosyncratic, and because you cannot genuinely infer a person to believe one thing based on their opinion of another, tangentially related thing. The totality of human understanding used to be something open-minded people prided themselves on being aware of, believe it or not...

This is the problem with CRT. This is is the motivation behind the majority of people who wish to ban it. It’s not because they are necessarily racist themselves. It’s because they recognize, correctly, that the now-ascendant frames for understanding social issues boils everything down to a superficial patina that denies not only the realities of the systems they seek to upend but the very humanity of the people who exist within them. There is no humanity without depth and nuance and complexities and contradictions. When you argue otherwise, people will get mad and fight back. 

And this is the most bitter irony of this idiotic debate: it was never about not wanting to teach the sinful or embarrassing parts of our history. That was a different debate, one that was settled and won long ago. It is instead an immense, embarrassing overreach on behalf of people who have bullied their way to complete dominance of their spheres of influence within media and academe assuming they could do the same to everyone else. Some of its purveyors may have convinced themselves that getting students to admit complicity in privilege will prevent police shootings, sure. But I know these people. I’ve spoken to them at length. I’ve read their work. The vast, vast majority of them aren’t that stupid. The point is to exert control. The point is to make sure they stay in charge and that nothing changes. The point is failure.

What did Jenny Nicholson do to John Boyega? Genuinely curious, it's the first time I'm hearing of this and would love to know so I can stop paying her any attention if she doesn't deserve it

Disclaimer before I get started: I’m a white woman and this topic is about racism perpetuated by white woman so please keep that in mind as you read. I’m gonna do my absolute best to echo what I’ve seen black people say about this situation and this type of covert racism but I am not black so they get final say on this topic.

This is not an easy thing to explain in it’s entirety because it happened about a year ago on Twitter and Jenny deleted a lot of Tweets after the fact because she’s a spineless coward. I’m going to do my best to remember and I’ll include any receipts I can find, which unfortunately will be limited to what people saved at the time. :(

This all started because John made a joke about Rey and Finn having sex on Twitter.

It was a harmless silly joke. And it was not about Reylo. But Reylos took it upon themselves to be personally offended and absolutely LOST it at him, calling him a misogynist, saying his statement was sexist, and sending him a slew of harassment, hate, and racism.

Now there’s a lot of hypocrisy going into this controversy because Reylos are notorious for sexualizing Rey often to disgusting degrees, like demanding the actual Star Wars movies be more explicit, saying light sabers are phallic symbols, accusing JJ Abrams of wanting Rey to stay his pure virginal Mary Sue, etc. (I’m not gonna bother providing receipts on this, just search the Reylo hashtags on Tumblr or Twitter, or check out the Twitter @ShitReylosSay). Let me make it clear that sexually explicit =/= sexist, and John’s statement was not sexist. Period. At the end of the day I think they were just looking for an excuse to attack John. Because he cannot breath without people attacking him.

Well John noticed right away it was Reylos going at him so he took the opportunity to drag Reylo.

Was he being a petty? Of course he was, but he had EVERY RIGHT TO after the endless racism he has endured from the Star Wars fandom. People are always applauding white actors like Robert Pattinson and Jacob Elordi for shitting on shows, movies, or fandoms related to their work. But when John does it suddenly he’s “unprofessional”?

John eventually started replying to some of the Tweets being sent at him.

They were all along this vein where a person was being outright hostile and vile, so yeah, he had every right to respond.

This all culminated in him picking out a bunch of hateful Tweets being thrown his way and posting this video to Instagram.

Well this triggered Reylos even more so they shifted tactics and took the whole white feminist approach that he was “attacking SHIPPING CULTURE which is majorly made up of WOMEN so he’s a MISOGYNIST”. They wrote these long essays and Twitter threads about how John was spreading harmful messages etc. But he wasn’t attacking shipping culture, he was attacking Reylo. Because it’s vile and abusive and he was no longer contractually obligated to endure it. And honestly? His tweet was mild at best. 

But please remember all this started because John made a joke that Rey and Finn ended up together. HE DID NOT START ON REYLO. THEY STARTED ON HIM. Everything that happened was reactionary on his part. We as a society refuse to let black people defend themselves and it’s fucked up and racist.

One of these pseudo-intellectuals spreading the whole “John is a misogynist and Reylo shippers are his VICTIMS uwu” narrative was none other than Jenny Nicholson.

Just so you know the “inbreds” comment was photoshopped by a white fan, not that Jenny would tell her incredibly large audience this to prevent spreading further slander about John.

A lot of people started replying to Jenny telling her why SHE as a WHITE WOMAN framing herself and other Reylos as the VICTIM of John, a BLACK MAN who did absolutely nothing to her or anyone besides not like Reylo and defend himself against online harassment and bullying, was racist.

And you know what she did? She blocked them all.

And to this day she continues to block anyone who brings it up because she’s a spineless coward who can’t be bothered to own up to her racist slip-ups.

Some of these people were being mean, but most were not. Some were nicer than she deserved. She still blocked them. She didn’t want to see any form of criticism (constructive or not) sent her way.

She even had the nerve to go at John AGAIN during the BLM protests after George Floyd was murdered because she has no fucking clue how to read a room. This was her bringing back her distasteful dislike of John DURING THE BLM MOVEMENT when John made that emotional speech in London’s Hyde Park. This was not the time or place but she can’t seem to help herself.

As a white woman with respect, authority, and a large audience, who viewed as an “intellect” on online spaces so her opinion is taken more seriously thank others, the things she says matter and impact a large group of people. She used her whiteness and her woman-ness to frame herself and other white women as John’s victim when she was not, because she knew it would be easy and she would get away with it. And she did and she has. As one person in the screencaps above tweeted so gracefully, she “participated in the fandom dogpile of John” when he had done nothing wrong except exist and have opinions.

Jenny is your classic example of a performative ally and she accidently showed her true colors. I no longer trust any white female video essayist who ship Reylo and are friends with Jenny because you know they all silently agree with what she was stupid enough to say out loud. This means Lindsay Ellis as well.

I believe the reason she refuses to acknowledge this situation is because she would be forced to either apologize or confess she still stands by what she said. And based off her vague-tweeting the situation as recent as June of 2020 I feel safe saying she still believes she was in the right.

The receipts I offered are only a small part of a much larger jumbled mess. I didn’t include everything there was but even this small amount is pretty damning.

Anyway, here’s my long spiel. After this, the subject is over. All I said is they shouldn't change his skin tone. Because they shouldn't. From a character design standpoint, it's literally part of his distinct design and doing that would just be a stupid call. They also changed his literal facial structure somewhat, I noticed, which is also a bad call in character design. Characters have defining characteristics and if those change too drastically, then the character becomes a caricature of the character they used to be; this is one of the reasons reboots/remakes/sequels can go so poorly.

That literally does not matter and here’s why.

Anyway you want to look at it, McCree is, by popular opinion, fairly racially ambiguous (for lack of a better phrase; I apologize if that’s not correct, it’s late and I couldn’t come up with a different way of saying it). The reason I say this is because I have never seen people argue about a character’s race in this fandom like I have about McCree; we can all either agree on or see the written proof that the other characters are a specific race. That being said, what everyone can and has agreed on about McCree is that he’s a darker skinned man (literally everyone arguing that he’s white are still saying he’s “darkly tanned”) and y’all arguing for his whiteness can say he’s based off old Westerns all you want (yes, I saw this argument) but cowboys originated from Mexico either way, ya ding-dongs. Furthermore, even if he was based around a white man in a Western, that doesn’t mean he himself is white, or solely white, or that he’s not just white-passing. Like, hello?

So, we have this dark-skinned, non white-coded man and it’s very public knowledge that people take comfort in him as such and can see themselves in him, whether they see him as Hispanic, Native American, whatever; obviously this is the case, because this argument wouldn’t be happening otherwise. Then we see this character, who so many people see representation in, or, hell, just like because he’s a smexy cowman, have his skin whitened a significant amount in these recent new design releases (the lighting used definitely had a part in this, I mentioned that already; that point aside). People see someone who was once their own skin tone--whose skin tone has apparently gotten continuously lighter over time, something I hadn’t personally noticed but have now seen many people point out--now with a skin tone that is much more Caucasian.

That’s one less darker skinned person lost to a sea of whitey tighties that has been drowning out poc for-fucking-ever. That’s one less dark-skinned person in the already far too small pool of poc representation. Anyway you look at it, it looks like a some form of whitewashing. That’s mega fucked up. It will not hurt a white person if McCree is not white, or not solely white; you can find ten other perfectly white cowboys to pine after in replacement. Whitewashing, on the other hand, is a very prominent and actually harmful issue. Not to mention, if you want a reason that’s not race-related, it’s just bad character design!!

He’s Hispanic? Cool, don’t lighten his skin tone. He’s Native American? Cool, don’t lighten his skin tone. He’s mixed? Cool, don’t lighten his skin tone. The only confirmation we get about anything ever is that he’s solely 50% Cow and 50% Man? Cool, don’t lighten his skin tone. Blizzard comes out with a statement ten minutes after I post this saying he’s Whitey “Jesse” McWhitePants-Man? Still don’t lighten his fuckin’ skin tone, he looks weird and less like the original character now, lmao.

The last thing about sign of four I do need to address is yeah, there's the Horrific Amounts Of Racism in that one and the whiplash hearing it is just ridiculous because they seem to be so knowledgeable in all other areas and fairly... politically correct, taking sherlock's original misogyny as a purposeful character flaw, but then they just mention someone indigenous once and suddenly its all parrotting racist propaganda and just... really awful shit. Scandal in Bohemia was a fucking ride, first of all, before we even get to Sherlock's girlboss arc we have to discuss how gay the whole situation was and how Doyle's attempt at making them less gay failed spectacularly

Like he's all "ah yes I need to marry off watson and uhhh make sherlock ummmm interact with a woman so they dont look gay" but he does it SO BADLY that it makes them look EVEN GAYER

cause i mean, even the conversation they had about watson getting married back in sign of four was gay af, but how Doyle handled things afterward was in no way straighter.

Cause you know, the man kind of wrote himself into a corner with the fact of Watson narrating these stories. So Watson has to be around to witness them, and to witness Sherlock's own thought process rather privately, so he has to be around sherlock at night, a lot. But trying to come up with a reason for that happening just... it didn't occur to Doyle. He just went. Ah yes this makes sense. And it's Watson just like Sleeping Over At Sherlock's like every other goddamn day and every time his wife leaves town and having them basically still live that cute domestic home life but they have absolutely no excuses for doing it anymore. It's quite funny

So I was gonna write three different lists, but then after writing the first part I realized this is very long and takes a while to write and nobody cares anyway so I’ll just post my recommended list only. Well, I mean, you asked, but I doubt you wanted all this lol. Thank you for giving me an excuse to talk about this stuff, though. Hope you enjoy my ramblings!

An explanation for what this list is: Sometimes I know a game isn't perfect in many aspects but I still had a genuinely good time playing it, hence why I'm recommending it. Also I should mention that I could talk for hours about some of these games so if anyone’s curious about more of my thoughts, let me know.

Alright, now that that's out of the way ...

How to Take Off Your Mask / How to Fool a Liar King / How to Sing to Open Your Heart (f/m): This is a trilogy of smaller, single-RO games where you can take one of two routes depending on how you act, and they’re all interconnected where you get to meet and interact with the previous games’ characters in the sequel games. I went into this expecting very little but what I got blew me away with how funny, charming and cute the games were. They don’t take themselves too seriously, at one point an angsty male character monologues deeply about some shit, and another one just slides into frame and starts mocking him. It was so fucking funny, holy shit. Also, a central theme is literally racism against catgirls? Which is monumentally stupid, and probably the games’ main flaw, especially in the final game where it pairs up a catgirl with a catgirl racist, but that one still ends with a literal bisexual queen literally making a man her malewife because she fell in love with his cooking, so like ... It speaks for itself. My favorite game of the three is the second one, where you get to play a punchy fake catgirl and romance a pink-haired prince. And honestly, all the female protags in these games are lovely and a breath of fresh air, and the male characters are fun and not abusive assholes either. There’s full Japanese voice acting, and two out of three female protags are literal catgirls who pepper in “nya” and “mya” into their dialogue, and it’s just treated as a quirk of their catgirl race. I AM NOT KIDDING. Yet somehow it never comes off as cringe, because it doesn’t take it self too seriously. These games are just cozy. That’s the only way I can describe them. Cozy and hilarious. Play them yesterday. Dream Daddy (m/m): Man tumblr did this game dirty. This is just a cute, wholesome daddy dating simulator with gorgeous art. Coming out on Top (m/m): So you know Dream Daddy? What if it was EXTREMELY, MAJORLY NSFW? Though I realize how bad the comparison really is, the only thing these games have in common is that they’re gay dating sims and don’t have an anime art style and oh, yeah, they’re both really well-written. Or at least, extremely funny. COOT (heh) is DDADDS’ horny older cousin, and I first encountered the game on a lesbian letsplayer’s YouTube channel. Yes I watched a lesbian play a gay porn game and it was GOOD. I was there for the cringe and fun and got surprised by how genuinely funny and sometimes actually touching the game was. I can’t give it my universal endorsement because it’s not a game for everyone, as I said, it’s extremely NSFW and the menu theme literally includes the singers screaming “SEX SEX” at the top of their lungs. There’s more to this game than the porn, but there’s just so much porn. It can be censored in the settings but it’s unavoidable. However, I still think it’s worth a look just because of how funny it is and how charming the characters are. If you don’t want to play it yourself, at least watch Anima’s playthrough of it. It hasn’t aged super well in some spots but I still go back to it every now and then. Akash: Path of the Five (f/m): This game markets itself as a more “professionally produced” western dating sim, and that’s accurate in some superficial aspects. The game is pretty poorly written, but it’s absolutely gorgeous and has really good English voice acting by actual professional voice actors. The premise is quite self-indulgent, but I genuinely respect that about it. You play as the only female elemental in a village with only men, and all five of your classmates want a piece of you. It’s clear the writers have put some thought into the lore and worldbuilding of this world, but barely any of it comes through in the actual writing and plot, which is basically just a vehicle for you to get together with your boy of choice. The ROs aren’t very well-developed either, and the plot is the same in every route with only minor variations depending on which guy you pick, up to the point where the protag has the same voice lines in some parts regardless of which guy she’s talking about. It also has one extra half-route that’s so bad and pointless I genuinely wonder why they wasted resources on making it instead of spending a bit more on the writing/adding some variations to the main plot. So why am I recommending this game? Well, it’s pretty, and it sounds nice. This game is a himbo, gorgeous but dumb as rocks. Enjoy it for what it is. I know I did. Get it when it’s on sale, I think if I hadn’t gotten it at half-price I would’ve felt a bit more cranky about it. Also Rocco is bae. Mystic Destinies: Serendipity of Aeons (f/m): Yes that’s the full title, no I don’t know what it means either. You may have noticed how most of the games so far I’ve enjoyed because they don’t take themselves too seriously? Well, this one does. It takes itself SO FUCKING SERIOUSLY. Like, way too seriously. It’s a little embarrassing at points because baby, you’re an urban fantasy dating sim. Calm down. But the game has gorgeous art and 3 out of 5 routes are very good. The last route, the one with your teacher, is both the most problematic yet somehow the one that breaks down the very concept of a dating sim within its own narrative (yes, this shit gets fucking META) and it got so wild at the end that 1) I still listen to the soundtrack for that route and 2) I still remember it to this day despite finishing it ages ago. My favorite route is Shou, he’s a sweetheart, but the mindfuck route is so buckwild that I think the game is worth playing just for that. There’s also a route that’s like a neo-noir mystery? I Do Not Know. This game is many, many things and it does them so sincerely and tries so hard, you can’t help but respect it. It doesn’t always stick the landing but man, just let this thing take your hand and wax poetic at you for a bit. Also get this one at a sale because it’s very expensive to get the full version. I got it for 9 bucks on itch.io and I felt that was a fair enough price, I’d say I wouldn’t have minded paying more for it because there’s a lot of content to enjoy and/or be baffled by. Arcade Spirits: This one’s a bit more weird from what I recall, and I honestly couldn’t tell you much about it, but I remember having a very good time with it and recommending it to a friend when she was going through some tough times and she said it made her feel better. I remember it making me feel better, as well. This is a VN about an arcade and the ROs are wonderfully diverse, with very real human conflicts that get explored in each of their routes. It can get quite existential and heavy at times, but in the end it’s a kindhearted game that I think everyone can enjoy. The main character was also, how you say, mood. It’s a game about getting possessed by a video game and then learning self-love. Ebon Light (f/m): This one’s free/name your own price on itch.io so go play it. It’s a weird plot where you play as a girl who ate an elven relic? And then the elves kidnap you because you’re the relic now. All the ROs are extremely pasty (like, literally white, as in literally the color white) dark-haired elves, except for one, who’s an extremely pasty blond elf, so ... diversity? I honestly don’t know what this game is aside from unique. I used to be a bit put off by the art style but now I think it contributes to the general atmosphere. It’s a weird game that technically doesn’t do anything groundbreaking but still left an impression of “huh. weird” in my mind and I think more people should play it. The ROs are all pretty generic dating sim archetypes but done well, with bonus points to Duliae who’s just a massive creep and I love him, and also Vadeyn who’s the only bitch in this house I respect. The worldbuilding is honestly a bit buckwild and I can’t give enough credit for how unique the elves’ culture is in this game. Definitely give it a go. Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds / Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms (f/m): These two are newer releases of an older Japanese visual novel. I wouldn’t call it a dating sim, it’s ... it’s more of a super depressing historical fantasy epic with some minor romance aspects awkwardly wedged in. It’s seriously some of the heaviest and most grimdark shit I’ve ever played in a VN/otome. I don’t understand why it’s a dating sim, it doesn’t read like one, it’s just historical fantasy based on real world events with characters based on real people, and they kill and they die and they grieve and they suffer. The games are literally about the downfall of the Shinsengumi, there’s no way of avoiding everything going to shit and you get to watch and be in the middle of it all as they struggle to stay alive and relevant in a world that doesn’t need them anymore. And there’s the protag in the middle of it all, being useless and submissive and bland just the way the usual otome protag is. I don’t think these games are necessarily fun, and the romance is certainly a lot more downplayed and deeply problematic just based on the age differences alone with some of the men, but the sheer amount of horror and sadness in these games make them stand out above its peers. It’s like watching a war movie. Since most of the characters are based on real people, they feel like real people instead of the usual otome archetypes, and they are so, SO flawed, it’s interesting to just watch them deal with the shit the world throws at them. It’s an Experience, and if you’re up for it, I think it’s worth the time. Cinderella Phenomenon (f/m): This game is free on Steam so go get it. You play as a really, genuinely shitty princess who gets cursed to be poor and forgotten and she has to help one of the ROs break his fairy tale curse so that she can learn about being a good person herself and return to her normal life. This game doesn’t look like much, but it has a genuinely well-written main character who’s actually at the center of each of the stories and in the overarching plot instead of just being around to make eyes at the real protagonists, aka the love interests. Aside from the main character, my favorite part of this game’s writing is how each route slowly but very smoothly expands upon the overarching intrigue. If you play them in a certain order, you get more and more info revealed to you that you didn’t see in other routes, gaps are filled in as you find out more about what actually happened and why, but every route also stands on its own as a full experience and none is more canon than the rest. There’s also some really heavy emotional parental abuse explored, which I found quite potent at times. The romances themselves were alright, I think Karma and Waltz were my faves.

most of this is just describing what she’s like but his writing did also add in the model minority, smart kid trope. like no they don’t have to be a terrorist or a A+ student who is the best at everything. there is a middle ground to their personality. 

i actually used to love his rep in sam. that’s how i got into the series. i saw a hijabi girl on his website. i got excited and read all of his books. i loved piper, leo, hazel, percy, annabeth, sadie, carter, nico, everyone. now that i look back i was younger and didn’t see anything wrong with it back then. its great that he tried to portray minorities but he did it so badly and now is just denying the faults that his now older readers are trying to tell him.

honestly how he wrote samirah as a hijabi was the dumbest thing i’ve ever read. its is totally fine if she wasn’t hijabi, many muslim girls aren’t, and that is their choice. but he decided to make her like a weird middle ground. it was so lazy and inconsistent. in the first book she says she wears it when she needs to, like in situations like going to the masjid. this was fine, since many muslim girls do that. then in the next books she wears it all the time except when she’s in valhalla for some reason. hijabi girls take of their scarves when they’re at home or with family, but making her claim the entirety of vallhalla as her family. that was just demeaning and stupid to me. it takes away its value. and i fucking hated that last sentence. for hijabis, their hijab is important and not a toy or weapon or a MAGIC ITEM. and then on top of that she would have to take it of to hide. he could’ve made it anything else. her hijab isn’t some token item istg.

i love how he admits that they are a big problem and abusive and usually engage with child marriages. i’m relatively he doesn’t understand what the people even meant by it. the practice is a problem that isn’t supposed to be seen in a nice light. the only possible way it could be slightly ok is that if ADULTS agree they 100% do not want to choose who they want to get married to and let their parents choose, and both sides agree. samirah was a child and he decided to make her wedding life decided since the age of 12. and it was ok because amir was conventionally attractive and she loved him. WHAT IF SHE DIDNT. this literally is a dangerous arranged marriage. and arranged marriages are not ok, and mostly perpetuated by victims of it who will end up passing it down their family lines. my parents got an arranged marriage and I HAVE NEVER SEEN THEM DISPLAY ANY SIGNS OF AFFECTION. arranged marriages are not a trope that your can turn around to be a quirky personality trait for your characters.

i’m sorry that’s not how arranged marriages work. most likely if she said something her grandparents would have shut her done and continued with the marriage, as that is what you usually happens. do not portray the small amount of consented, ‘happy’ arranged marriages as the majority. it is a huge problem that many desi/middle eastern cultures are trying to erase. even on top of that he writes situations where she’s going to be in trouble for acting up and ‘jeopardizing the marriage agreement’ and that her grandparents think she’s ‘lucky that she could get the fadlan family to agree to marry their son to her’. these statements are often used in forced and dangerous marriages, so don’t try and justify your actions. if you wanted to show traditional customs in a positive light, there are so many richer parts of samirah’s culture you could’ve focused on and you chose arranged marriage. 😻 all you’ve done is given parents and authority figures a westernized resource to justify arranged and forced marriages, especially with the minimal explanation on how the marriage isn’t forced in the actual books. and yes, your books do condone child marriage samirah is clearly deemed into this marriage ever since the young age of 12. she lived her life knowing she would marry amir. no one has only one crush throughout their life. imagine how she would’ve grown up. sorry you only consider opinions that align with those in you mind.

i’m going to be honest i did like that one scene it was written nicely and accurately but the explanation he gives just ruins the entire thing. the way he just if this strikes you as islamophobic, or samirah as a hurtful, uhm no explanation i just disagree 😽. the way you wrote her is a hurtful stereotype sorry you can’t see it.

why do you think people are painting you in a negative light, so many of your characters are written on hurtful and negative stereotypes. people aren’t painting it that way, you need to calm down w your ego and listen. dang i’m sorry your best is giving half-assed excuses and not actually doing anything. i’m even more sorry people are mad that a highly privileged author that has a lot of influence is done talking about his racist depictions of minorities in his books.

PTA: Science Team (HLVRAI Fic 1/3)

*pulls dusty story out of garage and drops it into Tumblr*

I have been trying to finish the first chapter for AGES, and I finally got it done! I crave PTA AU content due to the wholesomeness and angst, and I just had to work on one short fic for this fandom. So, welcome to the first chapter out of three!

Word count: 1788

Summary: PTA meetings are a sham and no one hates them more than Gordon, but upon being forced to miss a “mandatory” meeting because of work, Benrey comes up with a brilliant idea to deal with this problem.

Chapter 1: Hostile Arrangements Require Equally Hostile Solutions

“Fuck! Shit! Okay-okay, I’ll just-motherfucker she did what?!”

Cursing was in Gordon’s nature. He often used it as a way to express his angry, dismay, shock, and all sorts of other negative emotions. As such it was not unusual to see pacing about and spitting insults left and right. 

What was unusual, however, was the fact that he was cursing in his own home. He had a strict swearing free zone in effect as a way to stop Joshua from picking up on any foul language, including a swear jar that tended to fill up whenever Bubby visited. It was quite fortunate that Joshua was currently being distracted by Benrey as the pair had been playing video games together for the past hour or so. 

Or they had been until, in a surprising display of stealth, Benrey crept out of the young boy’s room and slowly approached the frustrated Gordon. 

Gordon, who was currently continuing to quietly yell into his cell phone. 

“Are you kidding me?! I was scheduled for a meeting on the weekend! I have work tonight! How in the FUCK did she-”

“psssst, hey, hey feetman. you might wanna chill out there and, uh, stuff. turn down the volume.” Benrey cut in while pointing the tv remote at Gordon and clicking the volume button. “don’t wanna be a bad boy and teach joshie any naughty words.” 

“Shut the fuck up.” Gordon sighed, no real anger in his voice before redirecting his attention back to the phone call. “No, not you Natasha, it was just Benrey-”

“tell tasha her cookies are baller.”

“Wha-baller? Who the fuck says baller anymore?!” 

“c’moooooooon man, be a bro.”

“Natasha I am so sorry-tell her that yourself!”

“i can’t feeman, you know i don’t have a phone.”

“YOU WERE THE ONE WHO STUCK IT IN THE MICROWAVE!”

“i-i was just chagrin’ the battery with those radio waves, man. ads… they never lie.”

Laughter could be heard coming from the phone in response to the conversation going on between the two men. It was enough to snap Gordon out of his somewhat enraged state and refocus on whatever it was that Natasha was telling him. He gestured for Benrey to leave and only succeeded in shooing the ex-guard to the kitchen so he could have some peace. 

Not that the peace lasted long based on the muttered cursing and general sounds of Gordon stomping around. 

About ten minutes later, the frustrated physicist joined him in the kitchen, quickly making himself a cup of coffee and grumbling under his breath. Welp, looked like this was the perfect moment for some interrogation. 

“soooooo, wha was that about?” Benrey asked as he took another bite of the block of cheese he had been digging into. If you asked him, he’d say it tasted pretty gouda.

Damn, he needed to torment Gordon with more puns again. 

“Fucking-” Gordon exhaled sharply and ran a hand through his messy hair, too angry to noticed how Benrey reached out and gently pulled at some of the locks, watching them bounce and resume their previously curly shape. “Linda.”

Well, there went his good mood. 

Benrey’s eyes immediately narrowed, becoming nothing more than glowing slits in his shadowy face, as a disgruntled frown replaced his previous smile. Even the cheese in his hand seemed to start burning, smoke wafting off it as it began to melt in response to the sheer anger that name invoked in him. 

Linda Smith, the scourge of the neighborhood and one of the most uptight, pieces of shit that Benrey had ever encountered. A narcissist with a massive superiority complex, she constantly put down everyone around her who she thought of as being inferior.

Which was just a cover for how much of a racist shitwad she was, plus there were the various comments she made about fags invading the neighborhood.

An obvious insult aimed at not just Gordon and Benrey, but the other “not normal” couples that lived here and there. Poor Joshua had overheard some of the insults on multiple occasions, and she had called the kid a mutt to his face-

“Benrey? You wanna calm down before you poke holes in the ceiling again?”

Fortunately, Gordon’s exasperated voice snapped Benrey out of his enraged state before he accidentally inflicted more damage to the kitchen. A place that had seen many, many small explosions and fires. At this point, he towered over the other man as sharpened, boney spikes poked out of his back and scrapped the ceiling. Plaster fell and dusted the countertop. 

“oops, s-sorry dude.” Benrey awkwardly shrugged, flesh dripping from his arms and face in a rather gruesome display, not that Gordon was bothered by this. He was used to how… horrific his partner could become. 

Especially when someone mentioned Joshua being hurt or insulted in any way. It was actually quite wholesome thinking about how much Benrey cared about the young boy and how much their friendship had bloomed since they first met. 

“I get it.” Gordon sighed. “She’s such a bitch she’d make anyone Hulk out.”

“ten points for the ref there, feetman.”

The physicist somewhat seriously flipped Benrey off, making him laugh, before continuing to rant about the purpose of the now finished phone call. 

“I still can’t believe that stupid school listened to her, and I’m not the only one getting fucked over here!” He spat. “I can’t just drop out-”

It was at this moment that the source of Gordon’s rage dawned on Benrey, and the ex-guard spoke up. “wait, the school thingy?”

“You mean meeting?”

“ya.”

Gordon groaned and hid his face in his hands. “The MEETING! Linda fucked up my schedule! I don’t know what she said to the administrator, but they canceled the weekend meeting I was booked for and rescheduled me for tonight. When I have WORK!”

Benrey winced in sympathy and reached out to pat Gordon’s shoulder with his not cheese coated hand. “damn, th-that’s a real cringe move. can’t you get, uh, joshie’s mom to take care of it? s...shea?”

“I can’t,” Gordon muttered, face muffled by his hands. “Shea’s been on a business trip for some conference and she gets back in five days.”

“oooooh, that’s why you’ve had little josh bro for so long?”

Rather than respond, the physicist just continued to groan and hide his face in his hands as he tried to figure out how to fix the mess he had been caught up in. 

Joshua’s school had a very… specific structure to how it was run. Standard funding and where it would be directed was determined by the staff, however, sometimes the school would receive donations or raise large amounts of money through fairs and other events. 

And it was how this extra funding would be spent that the local community had the chance to weigh in on. Determining if it should be used to get more sports supplies, help fund after school programs, or be used to help make the school more accessible. 

The ramp that had been added two years ago was one such example of the potential good that these extra funds had, however there was one problem with this process. 

All parents were required to attend a meeting and voice their thoughts. This was a rather new development that had been added after a small group of disgruntled parents, ones who had objected to using the extra funds to improve the school and arguing that it should go towards planning fun trips instead, had tried to sue the school board. 

Of course, the case had immediately been thrown out and dismissed, but it had set a dangerous precedent. A precedent that now made it mandatory for all parents to attend one meeting to determine their opinions on where the funding should be used and write it down so they could not claim their voices had not been heard. 

Honestly, it was such a stupid arrangement in Gordon’s opinion. Why not just send out an email? Or forms that kids could take home to their parents. It was so… disruptive and annoying, especially for single parents who had to work long hours. 

Like him. 

His hands tensed, nails nearly dug into his skin before Benrey carefully moved them, holding them. As Gordon looked up, the ex-guard sent him an awkward yet warm smile. An attempt at reassuring him that things would turn out alright. 

“hey... you-you gotta chillax feetman, things’ll be okay-”

“How the hell am I supposed to chillax in this situation?!” Gordon barked as he removed his hands from Benrey’s, shoved himself out of his seat, and began pacing around, furiously staring at the floor. 

“I’ve been fucked over by some racist bitch! Joshua needs someone there and it has to be someone who has some kind of guardianship over him for that stupid funding bullshit!”

As his partner raged on about the unfairness and overall stupidity of the situation, Benrey decided that it was time to think. To think, and plot, and come up with something that would hopefully calm Gordon down while solving the problem that Linda had caused. 

Simply put, Joshua needed someone who had designated guardianship over him to be present during the meeting to act in his best interests. Not surprisingly, Benrey did not have this title due as both he and Gordon had agreed that it would not be the best idea due to both his inhumane nature and the potential destruction he might cause. 

But, that did not mean that only Shea and Gordon were listed as the young boy’s guardians. There was one other who had been granted the title in case of an emergency, although his presence had never been needed up until this point, which was probably why Gordon had forgotten about him in his stressed out state. 

Dr. Coomer, one of Joshua’s “grandpas”. 

And, of course, if one member of the Science Team went somewhere, then the rest had to follow. The Science Team stuck together through thick and thin, no matter the strife or struggle and always left chaos in their wake. 

Hostile arrangements required equally hostile solutions, after all. 

“this is gonna be baller.” Benrey chuckled, his eyes flashing brightly at the brilliance of his plan. Now all he had to do was get Gordon to agree to it.

“pssst, yo, xen to gaydon.”

There was something about the tone that Benrey’s voice took on that snapped Gordon out of his ranting. How calm and collected he sounded, the coherency and confidence in his words. Somewhat concerned, the physicist turned around and saw the scheming look in the ex-guard’s glowing eyes as his fingers drummed on the table. 

“feetman, i got a plan.”

To Gonta, Kiyotaka, and Kaito

I have this friend, I met her last year when I first moved to my tiny school (only like 500-600 students K-12) and her group of friends. Im close with her and all of her friends now too, but recently she’s become,,,unbarable,,,she says all kinds of racist, homophobic, ableist slurs (not uncommon for my small bigoted home town). She calls me a snowflake and things like that when I call her out. She’s also pretty toxic according to other friends I vented to about her...sometimes she’ll call everything I like “stupid” or r-t-rd-d, other times she’s just generally mean to me, to the point where my girlfriend (one of her oldest friends) has started saying she was being a dick. Today she went on a small tangent about how there were only two genders and gender studies are stupid, and I just sat there....it hurt as a closeted Enby. Today she also was talking about her and some of our other classmates harassing some girl with all sort of slurs for calling them racist.

I really want to cut her off but I can’t because it’s a small school and I’m scared she’ll get mad and out me to the whole school or hurt herself...but I’m also so hesitant to let go of her because so much has hurt her and gone wrong for her, and I know she has such a capacity for love and acceptance...at one point we felt like family, I felt like an older sibling/parent figure when she didn’t have one...I love her, I let her into my found family...but continuing to be her friend and being forced to be quiet at risk of almost my whole class ganging up on me in discussions where she’s bigoted are starting to make me feel so guilty and gross. And the anger I feel towards her makes me so guilty too, and sometimes I get scared that if I vent about her that I’ll just be misrepresenting her to people.....

Can I have a hug, maybe some positivity. Please help me be brave again, and strong (HARK! That sounds like an ask that has just come in!)

Ah, it’s me, the anon who was venting about their friend earlier, I’m sorry to bother but I’m already back again heh...today she was pretty awful in the first three class periods. She was insinuating that gay people were babies and over reacting when people use the f-slur and then in the next class period she said the f-slur with a hard T, and made some insensitive Holocaust jokes. I feel so dumb and like I’m overreacting but those things aren’t ok. She just makes me so mad, but later in the day she’ll act nice and joke the same way she did when we first became friends and I’ll feel so guilty for ever being mad at her because she’s just a person like me...someone who wants friends and to goof off and someone who will hug you when you’re sad

Hey there anon! Holy shit, that's...wow, damn. That's really really not cool. I'd use stronger language but I don't think I have a swear pass. So you mentioned that your hometown is bigoted, that sounds like the kind of stuff she's pulling is the norm, which is really sad by itself. So I guess she's gone through live being oblivious and stupid and believing all of the crap she's saying. I usually like to hold out hope that maybe someone just hasn't had a chance to learn these things because of how they were raised, but calling you a snowflake is just stupid. Like, for real? She had so many opportunities to open her mind and learn some shit, but I guess not. If anything, she's the special snowflake who can't take learning that her beliefs are dead wrong. I think it's good that your other friends are seeing that she's being toxic. That's a dick move to call your interests that, and I'm glad your girlfriend has your back.

Aw man, I'm sorry. Enbys are awesome, including you, and I'm sorry you had to sit through that toxicity. I got news for her, there aren't two genders. I know, so shocking. Anon you are incredibly valid no matter what she says. Be proud of who you are, even if you aren't out yet. Honestly, she's a bully. That's disgusting how she was insulting that girl. Honestly, you gotta consider your safety. I would quietly try to get some distance from her, but nothing big. I don't want you getting bashed by the school as a whole, you don't deserve that. Try to get some space on a small scale so you can think things over.

Yeah, I'll be right there with you holding out a little hope. Maybe she can learn, and maybe it's worth giving it another shot. I'd sit down and have a serious conversation with her about the things she's saying and why they're wrong and hurtful. I get it, you wanna believe in her, I do that all the time. I don't wanna give up on people. But only give it one more try. You've gotten enough hurt as is ok? You shouldn't feel guilty. She's doing some really hurtful things, and you have a right to talk about it and vent about it. I don't think you're misrepresenting her. I got a good understanding about the things she does, and how you care about her still. Talking about your feelings can help get them out. 

Yeah, let's get some positivity up in here!! The good news is that you're gonna graduate from that school and get to where you can be yourself without any of the slurs and crap. This situation isn't gonna last forever, and on a wide scale, her bigoted views are outnumbered. It's ok to take a break from all of the heavy feelings, you can go look up videos of cute animals, or videos that make you laugh. Take care of yourself ok! There's lots of resources online where you can find more acceptance than you do irl, and maybe that would work too. You want me to help you be brave huh? Well, I don't think you need much help. You reached out to us, and you're clearly smart. It's a freaking scary thing that you're stuck in, but I know you got the brains and the skills and the strength to get through. There seems to be some kind of huge disconnect. Either this girl is the most oblivious being to ever exist, or she's a two faced bitch. It's definitely confusing. I stick by what I said before. You need to have a talk with her to she if she understands what she's saying. She might have a chance to change, but if she's saying these things and fully understanding the weight of them, there might not be much you can do. You don't have to feel guilty. You're already giving her another chance that she might not deserve. Again, you're in the right, and you aren't doing anything wrong. I'm sending you all the bravery I have ok? Poisoned Darts and Words

Death and Strife found themselves accosted by a group of demons, who fancied themselves clever for their ambush. Despite how Death knew they were there before they got too close to ambush site. This fight was a simple one, almost insultingly so. Strife still had fun though, as per usual. Death meanwhile took this task on with some boredom. Killing the leader of this failed attempt was a little amusing though. However, once their blood had been spilt, Strife pointed out a something on Death's neck.

"The fuck's on your neck?"

"Hmm?" Death replied confused and feeling around for the object. He found it easily enough and only chuckled, "It's just a dart. Ha! These fools actually tried to poison me."

"So you're good then?" Strife asked him.

"Should be, so long as the poison is nothing I've not built up immunity to." Death states before they went on their way.

The two brothers continued to travel on for some time. Taking a simple road to avoid too much trouble. Being in the Fae Realm usually granted them the least amount of problems to deal with. However, Death was soon faced with one such rare problem. He felt seering pain throughout his body for a brief flash of moment, accompanied by the sudden blurring of his vision. He foolishly tried ignoring it, not wanting to worry Strife. But it soon progresses, the flashes come on stronger and for longer. He also becomes disoriented and his entire body flares up with intense heat and pain. Eventually it finally begins to overtake him, he can feel himself losing consciousness slowly.

He calls to Strife in a strained voice, "S-Strife...", before falling off of Despair's saddle.

Strife of course panics at first when seeing his older brother on the ground. It doesn't help when he feels Death's body is burning up as he lets out pained breaths. He eventually lifts Death onto his shoulder and lays him onto Despair's saddle, tying him down to be sure. Then he remounts Mayhem and quickly has Despair follow behind them as they try and find a place for Death to rest. This takes time, too much in his opinion. Eventually they find a town and Strife quickly dismounts Mayhem to knock on doors.

He hears from inside one home, "Does this man think I'm stupid? I'm not opening for a Nephilim."

Strife, stung but not surprised by the words, tries elsewhere but only hears, "Be gone from here you son of a harlot! I'll not have Lilith's spawn in my home!"

"WELL FUCK YOU TOO THEN!" Strife shouted at them before searching for other places.

He found no such luck, only being met with cruel folk or racist bigots. Finally a tavern owner came out with a gun, determined to see to it that Strife and Death left their town.

"You're not welcome here Horsemen, leave."

"One, that crappy shotgun won't stop me. Two, my brother's ill. I only need to find him a safe spot to rest, and a doctor to treat him." Strife told him.

"Your presence brings nothing but fear and destruction! Why should we aid you?! Wouldn't the universe be better off without you?!" The man shouted back.

Strife hid his growing hurt and anger as best he could before telling him, "We mean no harm, I just need help for my brother. That's all."

"I won't aid any of you Nephilim, what makes you any different from your kin anyway?! What makes you lot so 'special' that we should care whether you live or die?!" The man bellowed.

"WE SERVE THE COUNCIL TO KEEP THE BALANCE IN ORDER! TO KEEP YOUR SORRY UNGRATEFUL ASSES ALIVE! Yeah it's a thankless job, and I can live with that! BUT FUCK YOU AND EVERYONE HERE! PEOPLE LIKE YOU MAKE IT REAL DAMN HARD TO CARE ABOUT THIS JOB! IT'S HARD ENOUGH WITHOUT YOU RACIST FUCKS INSULTING US EVERYTIME WE PASS!" Strife shouted in pure rage as he snapped at last. Only stopping his rant when feeling a familiar hand on his shoulder.

Turning around he saw Death fighting to remain standing, using Harvester to achieve it. Strife quickly grabbed him and began helping to get him back on Despair. Whilst at it, Death told him,

"Don't bother.....let's just go.....it's not worth the trouble...THEY aren't worth it...."

Strife stayed silent, only nodding after a moment of silence. Then once Death was secure again, he remounted Mayhem once more. His final words to the man came as he began to ride away with Despair following closely behind.

"Should you ever find yourselves in need of aid from anyone, don't come crying to us. People like you, aren't worth saving."

The man said nothing back surprisingly, but seemed a bit stunned by those words. As if he really should've been at all. With that, Strife hurried his pace with Despair matching it with ease. Strife ultimately brought Death to his home, a calm, humble cabin within some woods. It took even more time to get there, and at that point Death was back in his disoriented state again. Carefully Strife got Death inside and onto a couch for the time being. He then called up War and Fury for advice on what to do. Only for both of them to hurry to his home. Fury brought various remedies whilst War asked Strife how this happened. After an explanation from his older brother, War settled down and began helping Fury when asked to. Fury asked for Strife to help too, but found him sitting on a chair nearby. He'd plopped down onto it after being weighed down by the events of the night, particularly with the town. However when Fury sent War out to find a doctor as fast as possible, she asked Strife to take over helping. This he finally did, all the while feeling worthless. Fury could tell something was weighing heavy on him, but wasn't sure what to say in order to ease his pain. Assuming any words could ease the storm in his head currently.

Overtime War did return with a doctor that was willing to help, or rather just brought Azrael. Not trusting any normal doctors to do it and having no time to search. Azrael quickly found the problem and aided Fury in treating Death for it. War took the time to check on his older brother, as Strife was uncharacteristically quiet. Clearly there was more to the night that he didn't mention.

"You've been quiet."

"Oh yeah? What about it?" Strife asked him with a bit of a snap.

"Only that I know fully well that you're only this silent when something is troubling you. Is it about Death?"

Strife sighed, "Death being sick is only part of it. The town we ran into didn't help things, AT ALL."

War noted his brother's growling of the last two words and inquired, "Why remain there then? They were a waste of time. Refused to lend aid. Why not just move on?"

"BECAUSE WHAT THEY KEPT SAYING BOTHERED ME OK!" Strife snapped at him.

Fury and Azrael both turned around briefly to glance his way. Fury herself looked surprised by that and dared to ask, "Strife, what do you mean?"

"Come on sis you know EXACTLY what I mean! All the shit we hear from people on a daily basis, it was all in one place tonight! Got to hear it all from one man in fact! Course I've no doubt that the rest of the damn town felt the same way about us! I just got tired of hearing it! I wanted to set the record straight! To shut em up somehow!" Strife yelled as he paced the room.

Azrael sighed, feeling he had little room to speak on such things. He still decided to say something at least, even if it wasn't much help, "Strife, I fear you may always face such cruelty from others. Just remember that ultimately words hold no meaning when ignored outright. Focus on the good, on your family."

Strife stopped pacing and after a moment of tense silence, slammed his fist into a wall. War placed a hand on his shoulder, "If you need time to blow off steam, I can spar with you outside."

"Nah man, I don't wanna hurt you by accident. Too angry. Just need to go relax or something."

With that Strife went upstairs to try and sleep it off. Only to forget that sleeping while angry is a bad idea. His night is a long one for sure. And mixed with his concerns about Death, it just made it nearly impossible to sleep at all. The next day, he got up exhausted in more ways than one. Death was already awake, feeling better as his body was finally healing itself. Azrael wasn't around, and Strife expected as much.

Seeing his younger brother's exhaustion he inquired, "Strife, are you alright?"

Strife froze a second before looking up to see Death awake, "Why ask that?"

Death just shook his head, "You look worse than I do. Are you that worried about me? If so I'm doing fine. Should be well within a day or two in fact."

"It's not just that. Last night was just....overwhelming."

"Ah, I see. You shouldn't let what they said bother you so much. As I told you, it's not worth it." Death stated calmly.

"It's hard to keep ignoring it, when you hear it as much as me." Strife told him sounding a bit depressed.

Death didn't know what to say for a while, then finally said, "You said our work is thankless, however that's not entirely true."

"You don't know that for sure."

Chuckling Death replied, "Actually I do know for certain. You see Strife, we can still thank each other for many things. In fact, thank you for making sure I was treated. Even if the journey wasn't pleasant to go through."

Strife simply told him, "We're brothers, I'll always have your back. You know that. Even if you piss me off sometimes."

"And I'll always cover your back if need be. Just know that much, no matter who says anything bad about us, or what you hear everyday."

Strife smiled at that, "Thanks bro, I needed that."

"Also, if you need to vent, just come talk to me. I'll listen for as long as you want me to. If it means you don't get overwhelmed anymore, I'll do it." Death said with a slight warmth to his tone.

"Yeah, I think I'll do that. Thanks man, seriously. But what if you're busy?"

"Then ask Fury or War. I'm sure they'll let you vent to them too. Now then, shall we get breakfast started?"

"I can manage, you stay put over there. You still got some healing to do." Strife tells him simply.

"Very well."

I'm so upset right now about the celebrities singing Imagine, I do agree it was cringy and useless, but people are slagging off John, I saw a tumblr post saying 'fck the celebrities singing a corny song by a racist abuser.' Like. God. Every time someone shits on John or Paul (they both get an equal amount of hate in my opinion) I feel like the leave Britney alone guy, just a crying mess screaming leave John and Paul alone, leave them alone you assholes.

Alright, so, I feel like this whole thing is sort of complicated and I’ve seen some bullshit from people on my main blog about not only the song, but about John, which resulted in me unfollowing them. I’ve talked to Novak about it because she’s a sweetheart and honestly keeps me sane when I witness stupid people saying stupid things because they’re, like I said, stupid. 

While I do not know John, personally [only in my fantasies] and this is just me saying my own opinions and thoughts; if John was still here with us, I think he’d find that song insufferable and he might even find it to be the bane of his existence. Two reasons why: because of how that song has been used by obviously entitled elitists who would rather sing about an unrealistic Utopian than actually step up and let their actions speak for them. Secondly, because of how that song is attached to the unhealthy and hoax of a lifetime relationship he had with Yoko. 

Whether you like the song is irrelevant; I like the song, only because it’s John singing it-- but he had so many other songs that were, in my opinion, much better and much more John than that one. That song? Was based off a poem of Yoko’s. It wasn’t really a John song, it was moreso a song influenced by Yoko. 

Now, again, I don’t care what you think about the song, but when I witness people dragging John along with it, I lose my shit. I’m protective of that man, maybe not on the same level as Paul, but I’m right there with him. 

Firstly, John wasn’t racist, nor homophobic, or a wife/woman beater, or an abuser, or even pretentious. Like, these are all facts. John wasn’t even political, all that political shit was influenced by Yoko, and John, being relatively ignorant about it all, agreed with her and let her sort of drag him along for the ride. John wasn’t political, and he certainly wasn’t a fucking Communist [I saw someone make that claim and I nearly busted a blood vessel] 

John, like all the other boys, simply hated pompous, ignorant, self-important individuals who were rude and took shots at them. They all came up in a relatively middle class/working class Liverpool, so of course they’d have their issues with the elitists and of those who acted as if they were better than them. John also saw himself as much more on the side of the Irish struggle than with the British, and thus sympathized with them. John was a compassionate, sympathetic individual, he did try his best to help and be a support. But that, and making satirical jabs and drawings, was pretty much the extent of John’s political affiliations and knowledge. 

By the end of it even John regretted many of the things he and Yoko did as political acts [that bed-in thing] and was pretty much done with all the political bullshit. But you have John receiving all the flak for basically what were Yoko’s ideas. You have these morons believing all of the lies and stories pushed by ignorant biographers and Yoko. 

I think it’s hypocritical and insufferable for these Hollywood elitists to be singing this song, and I do think it has John screaming into the void, wherever he is. As John said, “It’s just a fucking song.”

People need to leave John and Paul alone, leave them alone, and if you don’t even know what you’re talking about then don’t fucking talk.
