i got drunk & watched the rwrb movie last night and i have 2 thoughts

1. that was bad

2. it was like a bad porno but without any porn

cannot stop thinking about these lines and their respective expressions. merlin "cracking" what matters to gwaine the most and trying to tempt him with it. gwaine looking compelled but wary, almost betrayed? and later that same episode when gwaine retaliates by "cracking" merlin's deal he does so in a way that validates merlin instead of judging him (as this is more about gwaine seeing how much merlin loves arthur than anything else), leaving merlin speechless and cautiously elated. in both their reactions there's the vulnerability of "oh fuck i've been perceived" and being generally caught off-guard, but there's also an undercurrent of "why are you saying this? because you mean it? because you think it's what i want to hear? because you want to show me you've figured me out? all of the above?" a sort of mutual intrigue..... the mortifying ordeal of it all

tbh i have so many issues with the ways bg3 characters are perceived en masse but astarion gets first place in the "they forget he is an experimental fusion of lucille bluth and dennis reynolds" race. like. listen, i do love him. but he's not a charisma build, he's a cat that just fell into a river. if u ascend him u also ascend the clown aura. u have brought the clown aura into the light permanently. now the clown aura can fly and summon swarms of whatever the fuck ascended astarion can summon (clouds of locusts? more bats? idk, it's late) and like. talk to wolves or whatever.

by the way i can completely tell the pjo tv show is still finding its feet and there are certainly flaws but the fact i can also see the black sails/rick riordan writing quality peaking through this early is blowing my goddamn mind.

the emphasis on themes of violence and foreshadowing the central conflict of hate begetting hate within families? being cast aside and mistreated by your parents and having to choose revenge (luke) or to break the cycle and forge a new path (annabeth)?

medusa paralleling with annabeth but more than that paralleling with luke as a victim trying to recruit percy in a rage against the gods and killing those that stand in her way. echidna showing more love to her children than the gods do to theirs. foreshadowing the complexity of the gods and the different sides of the kronos war with the early introduction of a jaded but good hearted hephaestus contrasted with rage incarnate ares and the cold violence of athena against the tumultuous irresponsible love of poseidon.

yes they’re changing a lot but also thinking about how much this adds to the story and how much i’ve been reconsidering the themes and events of books i’ve read dozens of times over the course of 12 years is mind blowing to me. like this show is killing it and if i don’t get 4 more seasons catch me face down in the ocean

I think that the expectations of the show were for exactly what everyone wanted, because of Rick's involvement and the budget, but everyone imagined the books differently, so not everyone could ever be happy with it.

There's that, and it is marketed towards a younger audience and I'm not making any assumptions but most of the fans who aren't happy [from what I can see] are a bit older then the target audience [not that there's anything wrong with that, obviously, don't come at me], and if you re read the first book it's literally written for children.

There's literally backlash for everything ever made because for some reason people just can't chill [???] but I think the reason the Percy Jackson show had such a large amount of people unhappy with it is because we haven't had anything like it before. I don't know how to explain it but we've all created our own little versions of the show and made our own content for the fandom cause we were left to our devices for so long, so now that we have something, viewers already have these empires in their heads that they want to see on screen.

I'll just put it like this, if the show came out, like, a few years after the og book series, there would be less people unhappy with it.

(it makes sense lore-wise tho, the elves did lose a lot of their language and many of the Dalish have American accents in canon, so it's fitting, if sad that they would have troubles even just pronouncing Elvish, but I'm also just saying that with affection and a tiny bit of smugness)
