Steph: Weren't you on the streets after the Joker attack? Why didn't you go to your aunt's house or she come get you?

Duke: -And recently, they've hit a really bad spot. Apparently, my Uncle Damon lost his job. They sold all their stuff, but it still wasn't enough. The house was taken by the bank two days ago.

Tim: Answer Steph's question Duke, or I assume your uncle is trying to explort you and make him a enemy of the Bats.

Duke sighing: My aunt and my uncle marriage ended in a really bad divorce, with her going no contact with him or my cousin Valerie, but I've always felt bad for not keeping in touch, you know? So I offered to house Valerie for a few weeks just until he can get in a good spot again.

Tim: I see. You're a good person Duke.

Duke: You say that like it's something to pity.

Steph: Seriously, Tim, this is the man that ran a child gang for months and took back the streets out of sheer spite. He's a good person, but he's crazy.

Duke: Thank you. Can I count on your support when I ask Bruce to have Valerie stay with us?

Steph: Depends. Is she hot?

these are super, super informal and unorganized thoughts but god these panels are haunting me so:

it’s interesting to finally be reading some of the issues that i assume influence general fanon perception of damian because there’s so much emphasis on the actions against tim (and like yeah fair, fucked up let’s not move past that) but also there’s little moments sprinkled throughout that made me go “…this is a child. This is a whole child.”

like idk man! These two pieces of dialogue are very striking to me! “See? I can be useful!” And “Look at me, Mother!”. Maybe it’s just because I work with kids but i read this and very clearly hear a child’s voice! And sometimes i think because a lot of people get caught up in the “formal” way that damian speaks that people forget he’s a kid. A very competent, highly trained kid. But he’s a kid.

Again, i don’t think Damian’s actions can be brushed off just because he’s a kid, and (within the content of the Morrison run), has had some fucked up shit going on. But like - for fanon, I’m just begging folks to strike the balance between talking about Damian being held accountable for his actions and also understanding that in this point in time he’s like maybe nine or ten-years-old. Idk! I’m tired of reading analysis and fan fiction that absolutely crucifies Damian and doesn’t try to find the nuance at all.

watching a video about growing up poor and now im wondering if, in the individualistic culture in the us, if there is a more likely outcome of collectivism is smaller, poorer communities

#the idea of poor people having to lean on each other rather than the bootstraps we all have heard of and never seen #but then i also think about that bootstraps idea leading to avoiding creating a community among other poor people #bc a lot of poor people in the us do not realize they are poor #and the wealthy dont want us to know that we are poor bc then we have a naive belief that we can somehow become them #idk ive been thinking a lot about wealth/income inequality #and seeing these like financial influencers that are paying off debt and saving for retirement and look like they are doing well #and also about how at my job i will be surrounded by middle class born and bred people #who got a good degree from a good college and had all the experiences that they had as children and were never really worried about expense #rather than me who has known about money and how poor i am since the first grade and has been worried about having a roof over my head #and food in my fridge since then #its such a different world that we live in compared to each other and its kindve insane to see in like real life #but also thinking about the poorest parts of the country and how they seem 'happier' and more connected to their peers #idk lots of money talk banging around in my head lmao #k mumbles

THE IMPLICATIONS #i have two REALLY old ocs and at first i went like “well you can heal and summon cool glowing bat wings that can act as a shield”#“and you're telepathic and can create illusions and phychic damage”#and 10 years later i reread the stories and each world is build differently which means that magic works differently in each #and everyone has different relationship with their magic (like if you have vivid imagination you can create stuff more easily)#(but if you can't visualise how chemistry works for example a cup of tea you just made will taste like nothing and dissapear in the throat)#(and you might not be able to do it for. reasons)#AND THE WHOLE “YOU CHANGE TO FIT THE WORLD DESPITE NOTHING REALLY CHANGING FOR YOU” it's not said explicitly BUT THE IMPLICATION OF THAT #like. main char meets alien psychis cats basically (they're called mya. yea) and they kinda. simulate the whole “get in another world” thing #AND SHE BECOMES MYA AND REMEMBERS THEIR WORLD THROUGH THE LENSES OF THE EXPERIENCE OF HER HOME WORLD #like. they show her photos of her and other myas in different locations and doesn't remember any of that #she meets humans everywhere but are they really humans and not just. The Main Sentient Species that she gets turned into #so she sees them as human too? and where she can't “adapt” her vision with previous life experience some two concepts get #mushed together to create something in the middle that is close enough? (myas for example)#ough.#this is a children's book series that didn't get popular but was popular enough to get a reboot with new book covers (most popular ones tho)#AND it's not even that good.#AND i'm going insane because i wanna translate it but it was PUN WORDPLAY which is rare for me (in my language)#and if i'd try to do that i would go INSANE

just remembered an insane interaction i had with a former coworker once and i have to share (possible tw for gun violence unfortunately)

#it was the literal day of the uvalde school shooting and i was working the guest service desk with one other guy #i was 18 he was like 17 i think #and as i’m processing this woman’s return she says ‘did you hear about that shooting in texas all these little kids died’#and i didn’t know all the details but i had briefly seen something about it on my break so i said ‘oh i just heard about it it’s so awful’#but right then i was finishing up her return so i had to say ‘you’ll get x amount of money back on this credit card’ etc etc #so after she left i said to my coworker ‘the way she brought that up in the middle of a return was kinda awkward i didn’t know what to say’#and this is the insane part so prepare yourself #he turns to me and says ‘i know right like i don’t fucking care’#HEY WHAT THE FUCK #THATS NOT WHAT I FUCKING MEANT????#like i said it was awkward bc we were in the middle of a transaction that i had to finish up and there’s not a good way to pivot like that #what part of that made you think i was saying i don’t care about children being fucking murdered #‘it’s hard to have a conversation like that in the middle of work’ does not equal ‘i don’t want to talk about that bc i don’t care’ WTFFFF #literally could not look him in the eye ever again for the rest of the time he worked there it made my skin crawl just being around him #i have had MANY outrageous conversations with men at that job but this one was on another level entirely #lj.txt
