An Empire of Storms (exclusive) Target edition Short Story
Taking place in-between Chapter Forty-Five of Heir of Fire during the Second break’s Paragraph 2 (also referenced again later in Queen of Shadows Chapter 28):
“They'd spent the past week fighting and defending and manipulating her magic, interrupted only by a rather miserable visit from some Fae nobility traveling through the area--which left Celaena in no hurry to set foot in Doranelle. Thankfully, the guests stayed for one night, hardly disrupting her lessons.”
“"We need to talk." "Good talk or bad talk?" "The kind that will make me glad you don't have access to your power so you don't spew flames everywhere." Her stomach tightened, but she said, "That was one incident, and if you ask me, your absolutely wonderful former lover deserved it." More than deserved it. The encounter with the visiting group of highborn Fae at Mistward had been miserable, to say the least. And when Rowan's former lover had refused to stop touching him, despite his request to do so, when she'd threatened to have Aelin whipped for stepping in ... Well, Aelin's new favorite nickname---fire-breathing bitch-queen--had been fairly accurate during that dinner. A twitch of his lips, but shadows flickered in Rowan's eyes. Aelin sighed again and looked at the ceiling. "Now or later?" "Later. It can wait a bit." She was half tempted to demand he tell her whatever it was, but she turned toward the door.”
@guardian-angel12 (hope this helps :-) this is one of my favorites! So, an extra thanks to @bookofademigod
P.S. @mysterylilycheeta I forgot this is the “meat on a stick” chapter (definitely not a vegetarian bird boy)😂

I'd like to get into your comics. They look and sound amazing. But, is there a reading order? Where do I start?
Hello there! And Thank you so much!!!
I had posted this SOMEWHERE sometimes before but that was way back when Return to Darkness was just getting posted. There has been a lot added to this so let’s update this! x)
Tumblr media
Here is my recommendation as to the Order in which to read Universe - Law of Fire:
IF you want to only read the comics (and you can, i do try to keep them as standalone as possible, buzt of course, they are not seperat of the stories) they are to be read in the order they have been posted! They are ordered as such on the ULF Website Overview
That is Tale of Moons -> Starheart -> Kings and Legends -> Remnants of Gods
With Mondfeuer being a standalone spinoff based directly on some of the stories.
Speaking of, that’s the point where the whole context and backstory stuff comes in. So if one is at all interested in that, here is the full ULF experience reading list:
Heart of Fire, The Warrior and Comic one, Tale of Moons, are year one content. I'd suggest reading HoF as soon as possible, because it answered the question about why and how the comics are even happening. (fun fact but no reading recommendation: all of Comic 1 to 3 happen during the initial Chapters of HoF, and Comic 4 is set exactly between on transition in Chapter 10 of Hof.)
Wizard of Cowdenbeath, Kilchoan and Comic Two (Starheart) was year two.  WoC and Kilchoan do belong firmly together, intended to be read in that order but I think one could switch them around if one would want. (Kilchoan is probably my favourite story I’ve ever written, and timeline wise it is way before any of the other stuff (besides Little Wizard)) WoC is the make it or break it story of them all. If you enjoy WoC, you will probably like the rest as well.)
Leitnacht is a more light hearted bonus story referencing back to the first Comic, building on what happened in Tale of Moons featuring Powerwolf again.
Next is Parts and Fragments and Return to Darkness. These two, Parts and Fragments and Return to Darkness, belong firmly together. PaF also ties back all the previous stories and really shouldn't be read before the rest - there would be a lot of context missing! The whole question of “What are wizards and how do wizards” is explains slowly in the stories leading up to Parts and Fragments, with this one being the first we see a complete wizard (namely Ralathor in this case) in action. (Absolutely normal sentence that makes sense in this context I swear. It’s all about the Parts!)
With our newfound understanding of Wizards: The Mezchinhar Collection is next, a collection of short one shots following a couple Wizards around - and with already a bit of a feel for the home of the wizards, reading “Little Wizards” will fit very well. This is a very, very young Zargothrax slice of life.
Then Triton is the first story that picks up with Zargothrax since the last time we’ve seen him in WoC and - as the name implies - covers the whole escape from Triton. Thematically Hootsarival fits very well right after Triton, because it picks up with the Hootsman after he blew himself up.
By this point I would suggest having read and finished the third comic, “Kings and Legends” because the Hootsforce Collection has two chapters in the end that reference that comic. Again, it’s a collection, so it’s mostly stand-alone one shots from different points in time, looking at what’s going on on the Hootsforce.
Somewhen here I did a little spin off Comic focusing on the Powerwolf guys and Ralathor, namely: Mondfeuer. So that one makes sense to read around this point, because the version/Part of Ralathor we follow here is the Kingmaker, which is mentioned in Leitnacht, and he shows up in Kings and Legends too.
Then The Court Wizard. Picking up basically after Triton and Hootsarival - it’s Zargothrax’ arrival on the Terrorvortex earth - and what he does till he inevitably get’s bonked by a hammer. (I say it like that, but that ending is one of my favourites. It hurts a lot, but i like it a lot)
After that, we swing a little wider with a little interlude and a bit more wizard world building with “Heshiva’s Journals”
Then, finally picking up after Return to Darkness, we’re back with Ralathor in “Stargazer Part 1” This story runs at times parallel to Comic No. 4 “Remnants of Gods” (the current one), mainly the point where Ralathor is taken over by that Remnant is felt in this story too!
The story is cut in half because it’s not only very long and i haven’t written part 2 yet, but also, between Part 1 and 2 there are things happening, mainly, we finally, after all this, pick up where we started, we have arrived at the present day and following the events AFTER HoF in “To Save a Prince” which will lead into some events that will happen in Part 2 of Stargazer.
Very relevant to that too, there will be the Tempest Atum Collection, which also is relevant. But that is future talk. There is only the prologue posted yet. x)
Tumblr media
So my go through recommendation would be:
1. Heart of Fire (Comic)
2. The Warrior (Story)
3. Tale of Moons (Comic)
4. Wizard of Cowdenbeath (Story)
5. Kilchoan (Story)
6. Starheart (Story)
7. Leitnacht (Story)
8. Parts and Fragments (Story)
9. Return to Darkness (Story)
10. Collection: Mezchinhar (Story Collection)
11. Little Wizard (Story)
12. Triton (Story)
13. Hootsarival (Story)
14. Kings and Legends (Comic)
15. Collection: Hootsforce (Story Collection)
16. Mondfeuer (Comic)
17. The Court Wizard (Story)
18. Heshiva’s Journals (Story)
19. Stargazer Part 1 (Story)
20. Remnants of Gods (Comic)
21. To Save a Prince (Story)
22. Collection: Tempest Atum (Story Collection)
Tumblr media
Eveything Posted to AO3 together sits currently at roughly 430.000 words so… bring some time x) It’s a handful by now!

Note
hehe its cowboy time. SPOILERS ahead for CC, TOG, and ACOTAR. (I'm on my laptop bc i knew i was gonna go hard so enjoy lol)
Crescent city has a very specific role within the maas universe and I'd like to believe it was created to be a stepping stone or an aid of some kind for SJM. And that the two main objectives while it was being written were to introduce crossovers between universes and propel ACOTAR's story. For years there has been speculation among her readers that there would be crossovers eventually, there's been plenty of hints and small appearances over the years but never to the full extent CC was brought to. And I'd like to argue that said crossover wouldn't have been as impactful if Midgard wasn't 'modern'.
For example, each of our protagonists across all the different series so far have all been in or currently are in unhealthy relationships. Nesta and Cassian both coping with trauma/ negative feelings using sex in ACOSF, Aelin and Rowan literally physically fighting in HOF, and Feyre and Rhysand's unexplored history UTM as well as many other examples that I don't feel like typing out. Some of these problems are ones that can be fixed easily, but most aren't. I think with modern resources however, they would have better ways to handle said negativity.
Which brings me back to CC. I believe that SJM's intentions were likely to introduce a "forward" thinking individual into the ACOTAR universe that forces them to acknowledge their faults a little more. The reason I think this was a major reason for CC's existence is because of SJM's history of giving us morally grey characters and unreliable narrators. Especially because of the randall and ember bonus chapter at the end of HOFAS. We see Ember DIRECTLY compare Rhysand's anger towards Nesta doing the right thing to help others to the Autumn King. Who is the same man who locked down FiRo and didn't send help when the demon attack happened in HOEAB. It can of course be argued that Rhys helped others and he never would have let innocent civilians die like the Autumn King did, but that's besides the point.
Rhys in particular now has been called out by several different people for his behavior towards Nesta being unfair at the very least. And with SJM's love of hiding secrets from her readers? I think the idea of Ember's comparison was to show us, the readers, that we should be analyzing all of acotar's character's a little more.
Regarding HOW Bryce and hunt's relationship was written though? Totally agree in all honesty. Not super into it. There has been a continuous trend towards hyper-sexualization in SJM's more recent books I've noticed and however while it's not a negative thing I don't think it's being done in the best way. All of the male POV's SJM has written have been gross tbh, but I argue that that could be the goal.
#casualmisandrist
Modern men are usually a lil gross anyway, so I wouldn't be surprised that SJM's interpretation of a man would also be a lil icky on purpose. Just like how I'm not surprised so many people were into it lol.
That's about the gist of my feelings on CC? Especially since there were only supposed to be 4 books in the series, one for each house. Since it is so much noticeably shorter, I can't help but believe that CC was mostly a means to expand the universe and get more eyes on her most popular series for it's upcoming books, acotar. Which I dislike as a reader but at least she pulled it off using the lil nuggets of info shes been sprinkling throughout the years lol.
(sorry if this is long or rambly, im sick so im on the nyquil train otw to see the hatman)
PS, pls consider putting any of our homegirls from TOG in cbmthy so they can beat up literally everyone but the archeron girls rn bc the girls deserve a show and the IC needs their ass beat hehe
PPS, Elide, Lorcan, and CBMTHY reader crackship?????? yes?? pls???
-🤠
Warnings: yup, spoilers for CC, ToG, and acotar!!!
‘For years there has been speculation among her readers that there would be crossovers eventually’
This is totally just personal preference, not an actual argument, but I liked it when Aelin fell through the worlds in ToG and saw a male with a heavily pregnant female and then in acosf I think she’s mentioned as that red commit? That sort of thing I loved, or I think the book of breathings showed up in CC (maybe it was the book of the dead) but I thought those things were super cool, but honestly l would have preferred if it remained a mystery? Ironically now it’s been revealed it feels less magical—but again, that’s totally my own feelings and not really an actual valid criticism on CC :)
‘I believe that SJM's intentions were likely to introduce a "forward" thinking individual into the ACOTAR universe that forces them to acknowledge their faults a little more.’
This might be my own background talking here, but I dislike the narrative that because something’s modern or natural that it automatically equates goodness? It also kind of feels like (again, maybe personal opinion), miss Maas realised she made some mistakes in how she wrote characters in the past and how she chose to make them behave, then realised some of that was unacceptable or just not great, and then tried to recover by using a ‘modern’ character to go push all their own views onto other characters which I feel is so cheap?
‘Especially because of the randall and ember bonus chapter at the end of HOFAS.’
Oooh I’ve heard people talk about the Ember scene! I saw some absolutely adorable fanart of Ember and Nesta together actually which made me so happy since I love Nesta 😭
I feel I should probably finish off CC3 but it was genuinely painful at times I often ended up slamming the book down in frustration 😭 I’ll try and push through it though for the other characters that I do genuinely like 😭
‘Rhys in particular now has been called out by several different people for his behavior towards Nesta being unfair at the very least.’
(I would like to clarify ‘you’ in this case isn’t directly as you specifically, just a general, non-specific, generic ‘you’ 😭)
If I’m honest, I feel that’s just something that comes with the type of story acotar is if that makes sense? If you look and analyse too closely you’ll find the flaws and that’ll probably ruin your enjoyment of the series which is why I only enjoy discussing acotar lightheartedly? At the end of the day it is a fictional series so it shouldn’t be taken that seriously? Like to the point of some people judging a person’s character or making assumptions about them, based on who they like is absolutely insane and just way too much 😭
I have to say I don’t really understand people who dislike some of the main characters but continued reading? Not that it’s a bad thing—I just struggle to imagine disliking a character but continuing to read the book anyway? Especially with how prominent Rhys is? How can you even get through the books if you don’t like him? Like I genuinely struggle with CC because I don’t like the two main characters and have made the decision to not read another book because it brings me no joy?
I totally get analysing decisions and having fun discussing potential reasons pr motives different characters have, but only in a lighthearted way otherwise I’m just complaining about something I genuinely enjoy and then I’ll start to believe I don’t like it and it’ll just ruin the experience?
‘All of the male POV's SJM has written have been gross tbh, but I argue that that could be the goal.’
I heavily agree when thinking of Hunt but nothing particularly stood out to me for acotar/tog characters? Except for Az in that one bonus chapter 💀
‘Modern men are usually a lil gross anyway’
Babes usually I’d try to be fair and disagree but I think like a fortnight ago I went out and this man was fully pushing up against my back when I was looking at some t shirts and he even kind of knocked my hand away as if trying to get me to move over—I could literally smell the B.O. on him too 😭 (no, I didn’t budge one inch)
‘Since it is so much noticeably shorter, I can't help but believe that CC was mostly a means to expand the universe and get more eyes on her most popular series for it's upcoming books, acotar.’
Wait is there not going to be a CC4? Oh wait wasn’t House of Many Waters skipped out and we went straight to Flame and Shadow? Or am I misremembering that? Like I’ll be perfectly peachy if there’s no more CC 👀 (I mean, I’ll miss Ithan particularly and basically most characters aside from Bryce and Hunt 😭🤦)
‘PS, pls consider putting any of our homegirls from TOG in cbmthy so they can beat up literally everyone but the archeron girls rn bc the girls deserve a show and the IC needs their ass beat hehe’
Imagine over a meal one time reader mentions she’s been writing to someone then casually explains it’s trans-dimensional communication with this Queen from another realm who has fire magic and the IC are just [stunned silence]
‘PPS, Elide, Lorcan, and CBMTHY reader crackship?????? yes?? pls???’
Babes don’t put that idea in my head 😭 Elide and Lorcan are so precious to me (like yes I was furious we didn’t find out What Lorcan Did at first but low-key I’m kind of glad their relationship was kept the way it was? Maybe that’s just me loving emotional connections in relationships though 🫣🤭)

Okay… gonna try not to make my answerslonger than the books themselves😂… Thanks for such good questions @milswrites 🫶
Preface: I have read all of ACOTAR, am currently reading through TOG & on QoS, & 0 of CC (it’s next though). *no spoilers plz* & heads up to fellow newbies: there may be some spoilers for the ACOTAR series & TOG up until QoS/EoS.
RN ACOMAF (long term probably CoM, or QoS).
TOG (despite having not read the entire series, 4 books in & it’s much more my speed overall).
I can’t pick, I love too many! I will always adore Fleetfoot; cause FLEETFOOT! I also think the House deserves an honorable mention in ACOSF. Quick round up: Feyre’s compassion, Nesta’s portrayal of a different kind of character, Elaine’s persevering goodness, Rhysand’s ability to find magic & see art within people, Mor’s resilience, Gwyn’s powerfully portrayed truth & trauma reflected for readers without becoming her entire character. Aelin’s EVERYTHING & dare I say fire (pun unintended/intended?), Lysandra period (esp. w Evangeline), Sam; beloved, Rowan’s moments of both healing & hurting shown in the same moment without taking from either (it’s honest & lovely), Aedion’s unconditional acceptance & reaching love FOR Aelin, Dorian because he’s just such a stand-up guy, Asterin’s wild joy & ferocity of love, Manon’s growth & heart, Abraxos’s all-knowing empathy & never-giving-up strength, Elide’s cleverness, Emrys’s warm kindness.
“‘To the people who look at the stars and wish’ — To the stars who listen— and the dreams that are answered.” — ACOTAR; also this TOG 1 in combo “Still, the image haunted his dreams throughout the night: a lovely girl gazing at the stars, and the stars who gazed back.”
Feysand; if I have to pick one, they are the one I have fully read & love… though right now I’m obsessed with rowaelin & impatiently waiting.
Can I say yes, and? Cause at this point it’s all of them & then some😂 (the Gwynlain art is so beautiful🥹)… I just want them all to be happy (including Lucien & everyone affected by whatever “happy ending” it is) I will probably end up liking whichever Maas picks & decides to write as the “meant to be” way the best, but I can see points for them all.
I think Kaltain deserved more than the world that was forced upon her & it’s one of the tragedies among the series.
Bryce since I haven’t read CC. Big hopes for the next ACOTAR; Azriel, Emerie, Elain, Vassa. I’m always curious what happened to Briar from ACOWAR. And am enjoying learning more about Lysandra as I read, & even more Manorian knowledge, I would love to know Nesryn more, & the lost children of Terrasen as they find their way.
Yes, primarily the ones we aren’t “supposed to like”: as far as that goes, I despise Rourke Farran. I think Clarisse DuVency also doesn’t get enough hate (odd as that sounds). Though both are “liked” characters, they were written to be in-between for a bit which did have me as there was a time: in HoF’s 1st read; I didn’t love Rowan this has since (thankfully & permanently passed) & after my CoM favorite Chaol slowly grew to drive me insane during HoF/QoS however character growth has eased it up a lot through Queen of Light’s Pt.2
Do I have to pick just one?!😅😂 Fine, Rhys. (As mentioned earlier; I want more Azriel).
Court of Dreams; Velaris.
Does Kaltain count — (kinda wish she got a villain or bigger arc)? … I don’t think Manon is a villain, but if she were I like her & the 13 too much… I don’t think Ansel is ever a full-fledged villain but I did find her more fleshed-out as a character (heroic villains, flawed heroes & all that). Arobynn is despised & disgusting (NOT a favorite) but well-written.
Add back the deleted/bonus chapter of HoF into the OG copy (it adds so much depth, sense, & life for the characters/relationships).
What I’m calling the “High Ladies” theory; Elain taking over Spring Court, Nesta the middle (IMO), Mor as “Queen of Queens”, etc. Multiple “mates” including platonic & different people for different times in your life/“what if’s” so Sam & Celaena, Dorian & Lillian, Chaol & Elentiya, Rowan & Aelin (THX Reddit riff). Maasverse Crossover (I know Bryce has one; & there’s some mate/witch ones in TOG I think (trying to avoid spoilers)). My own being Arobynn killed Aelin’s parents; I think QoS is disproving that thus far, though.
Feyre (though I REALLY love them as a whole).
Elain gets more hate/misunderstood/not enough credit than I think is deserved; I hope a book focused on her helps; I find there is power in her kindness, compassion, & attention to detail; think being softer spoken is not necessarily a weakness (esp. when not given a chance to be anything else) & often overly played as “naive” despite her world… I understand the frustration of sending young Feyre into the woods (I’m not defending it) but personally, I always end up stuck in the fact that they were ALL children; the true fault lies far more on the adults aka parents & village.
Aelin (cause I’m currently reading & love her depth/layers), Feyre (I just love & “get” her) Bryce (haven’t met yet so IDK).
Aelin (TOG) Feyre (ACOTAR) & IDK yet 4 CC (possible the Chimera? Via cute fan art while “avoiding spoilers”).
A Court of Crying and Dying? — lol.😂That’s how I felt reading them🤣… but prob not cause I don’t want that for the characters!😅😅
I literally love WAY too many,🫶 I just love the fandom/friendship/fun of enjoying a series with others on Tumblr, SO much love to my mutuals!!!
I don’t have any yet (haven’t had a chance to read, esp. while avoiding spoilees) but am open to recs!😊
No pressure tags & always open 2 ANYONE who wants 2!💕

Sarah J. Maas Bonus Chapter Masterlist
Many people have posted images of the bonus chapters from Sarah J. Maas's books, and I thank you for giving us access to content we would have missed out on otherwise. However, no one person has posted all of them, so I figure that I can collate the links in one place.
There are minor spoilers below the cut in the chapter descriptions, so be wary of looking too far ahead, if you have not read all the books.
Throne of Glass
The Captain and the Prince - A conversation between Dorian and Chaol before the start of TOG
The Assassin and the Captain - When Celaena arrives back at the castle from her first mission as the King's Champion between TOG and COM, Chaol is waiting to greet her
The Assassin and the Princess - Before the start of COM, once Celaena has been the King's Champion for a month, she and Nehemia do a little shopping in Rifthold
Untitled - Mistward is visited by nobles—including one of Rowan's exes—during Celaena's time there in HOF
Untitled - A bonus chapter while Aelin and the rest of her court travel through Terrasen in EOS
Untitled - Chaol and Nesryn's sea journey before the start of TOD
A Court of Thorns and Roses
Wings and Embers - Cassian goes to visit the mortal world and ask Nesta to deliver a letter to the mortal queens in ACOMAF
Feyre's Perspective - In ACOSF, after Feyre and Rhys tells her sisters about their baby, they have a conversation
Azriel's Perspective - After the Winter Solstice celebration in ACOSF, Azriel is wandering the halls, unable to sleep
Crescent City
Ruhn's Perspective - Once Cormac comes to town in HOSAB, Flynn's younger sister decides to visit
Bryce's Perspective - Part 1 - Part 2 - Cormac invites Bryce to a luncheon at Flynn's parent's villa in HOSAB
Tharion's Perspective - Part 1 - Part 2 - Tharion reminisces about first meeting Hypaxia during HOSAB
*EDIT TO ADD: HOFAS has five bonus chapters, none of which have names and are just referred to by the characters they're about.
house.of.hurricane on insta has a reading guide for them, and has them all available in her highlights at the alternative link below ↓
u/ManicPlusSize on reddit has also posted a PDF of all five chapters if that is preferred.
Bryce and Danika - Takes place before the start of HOEAB
Bryce, Azriel and Nesta - Read after chap 16 of HOFAS
Ember and Randall - Read after chap 80 of HOFAS
Bryce and Hunt - Takes place after the series ends
Ruhn and Lidia - Takes place after the series ends
An alternative is here; the highlights contain all eight chapters
If I have missed any, please feel free to let me know, or link them in the comments/reblogs :D

A long running list of Rowaelin moments that give me life (cause the pining is too much in QoS & things HAVE CHANGED so much since HoF; some spoiler alerts for both):
For all I hated at the start it is also all I grew to love…
They have never been black & white; good stories & characters never are. They are both sides of the coin for better & worse.
There is a reality & humanity to them (surprisingly so within the fantasy series of magical fae) because regardless of that fact; in good or bad they are seen, accepted, & known (in love or hatred). Something crucial for two characters who spend so much time invisible all the while desperately lonely despite their attempts to “try” & stay in the shadows wishing needing someone anyone to stay.
There is a natural ease of understanding within them, even from the beginning (when it was not easy). Rowan still manages to know her better than anyone, to the point of creating cruelty (on occasion) when his words were such sharp weapons poised to hit her exactly where it hurt most (without knowing the full why behind it); at this time he understood her but did not know her yet; even though he is not speaking to her as often as he is to himself, they are such of the same it has the same impact on them both. Then there is the beauty of when they do know & understand; how it helps them understand & see the other side to the coin for themselves, & choose to give them both kindness or at least pull a punch for the others sake; because they understand beyond the surface what it meant, because even the assassin & warrior who never shoot second will take a burn for the other or avoid the fight in the first place. They act as a mirror to each other.
They are also able to handle each other: something none of Aelin/Celaena’s relationships had before him; actually the opposite, it was a large fear of hers that led to everything feeling very fragile (or recklessly self-sabotaged before). She was afraid of herself, afraid as she had been taught to be, afraid as they were, & afraid for them & of them & their fear. — Dorian never fully understood her; though he was the first to admit it & try to know/love her better as a friend. — Chaol epically failed at this, & is trying to hopefully epically apologize. — Sam is the one who would have; he would have waited & been honored to hear her story just as he said, & when she was ready she would’ve told him knowing without doubt he would not turn away, it would’ve healed an unspoken wound in seconds if they’d had the time… though Sam didn’t have to know everything to know her & love her wholly (as he did); she never got the time to experience it, she may have known it but she needed that time to say the words & not see him change to her because that fear always echoed; especially after… but Rowan, Rowan was different. Rowan held her as it singed him & did not drop her once, Rowan watched her burn a forest & did not flinch, Rowan pushed her to let out the monster & not once forget who she really was or stop reminding her; not when she played meek, not when she made threats; he can handle the best worst & in-between, he can even handle proving it. And so can she; she may have drawn a line in the sand for herself after he shut her down, but she lets him back in, opens the conversation. They do not turn away. They are unafraid. They can handle it together.
In being so truly brutally known they feel loved, the only way they could; because they are known, there is no skeleton or lie or imposter syndrome to inevitably catch up & come true. They know even if they do not feel worthy, even if they are terrified of losing it (whether it be a mess up or twist of fate), they cannot outrun or outfight it or find sense in denying it, for whatever reason they are loved. & they meant it, for they had every reason not to; for the times they hurt each other they had meant it & knowing what they could do meant they chose this too & that their I love you is just as true. They both needed that; something so solidly built on such trust. —
Above all they are honest; it is all they have left, all they have ever been, what Celaena desperately needed especially as she accepts Aelin, what Rowan desperately needed in a reality check & cause to believe in. The other point being: they need each other, whether they like it or not (& it is not for a while; love terrifies them for good reason, but for each other they are also brave & learning to be braver in the safety of it).
As Aelin herself said best ‘no wonder they loathed each other’ & as I’d say to their yin-yang thing “no wonder they loved each other”
P.S. note (on the note of brave & meant to be; esp. as I love the multiple soulmates in a lifetime for all the things we grow to be & sometimes have no choice but to lose): I think Sam & Lyria would have wanted Rowan & Aelin for each other… I think they would’ve been thankful to know the ones they loved most would find someone who loved them so well too… I think for all Rowan & Aelin are, there is all Celaena & Sam, and Rowan & Lyria were. There is something healing in the way their relationship doesn’t take from that which was, nor them as they are, it just is. And I think for them the fact they both loved & lost like that means a lot; she needed someone who could go to the grave with her, who could hear her whisper of another love & know they are not less then, who could leave a stone because even if they never met he was grateful she had someone who loved her like this; he needed someone who could love him like this who could face him after he turns away, give him steps & breath & pace, brush the tears away & trace the marks knowing what they meant without worry of what it means. They are not a replacement or a replica or a better off, they are what they are, just as they were what they were. And that is a very real kind of love & understanding of grief & how intermingled these things can be while remaining somewhat wholly seperate; one that goes deeper than fiction; one that meant a lot to me to see represented.
(In new light of little recent-re-reads) 1st meeting with Maeve Celaena falls back into Rowan; that’s what keeps her standing… while it also keeps her from running… gotta give the guy credit for having the whole “tall dark handsome stranger” thing down.👌
He goes after her into the woods. He keeps his distance, he lets her go, but he did not let her leave just to run to her death. He would not let her leave like that, he would not leave her like that. His anger did not overpower his humanity, nor did it ruin his further understanding to knowing he missed something (he knows right then he was wrong & so slowly he starts figuring it out) & helping her know too.
He lets her fight him. He knows she needs to say it, needs to get rid of it, needs to be a wildfire; so he takes the burns. He lets her say the terrible true words of how she feels left without Nehemia. Because he knows her rage better than himself.
The “we’re not friends” don’t friend zone me undertone.
He thinks more of her before she does for/of herself. He sees a queen from the start, he never asks her to be it, but he always believes she is capable. He never doubts that.
Even in her anger she gives him credit for what he is. For the leader they look up to. For the punches she asked him to throw. For the life he would lay down for any of them. For the hero he is & she wishes she could show him so he’d see.
Though they never fear each other they do fear for each other. Instead of paralyzing or reckless within it they find ways to care for each other in it. He stays to care for her, she lets him. He lets her ask too many times if he’s okay after he gets hurt & lets her check for non-existent fevers, so she can sleep soundly too. They know they need to know that; & their hearts are in the others hands.
He tells her. He tells her about Lyria, about the baby, about Maeve, about him. Because he knows she needs to know him; because he needs her to know him. … She listens because she knows he needs to be heard. … Right there is a huge lifeline, as he decides to build the bridge of trust (even if he gets burned) & she decides to not hurt him with it. They begin to cradle the others vulnerability instead of using it as a bullseye. They earn each others trust.
He also later asks to hear about her because he truly wanted to know & doesn’t pretend to understand more when he does not (cannot); so he asks. And she tells him; because she wanted him to know. They get better at talking about things like that too.
In the matters they also don’t excuse the issue there in the first place: they do mess up & they know it, so they do better. … They keep trying & growing together. … She does not burn him again. He never uses those words again. The honesty is not complacent… it’s just, well, honest.
Minus the fact “there is only one bed” & despite his “one night only” warning they keep ONLY one bed.🤭😉
He pauses. He lets her pause. They pause. He wishes he’d have known before she burned, & she begins to tell him the next time. She wishes he’d have explained the words first, & so he does that night & again the next time. They go to other continents to deal with the pieces, they take the others pace. And they come back anyway because they need this; a chance to breathe. They take a day around Rifthold. They fight & still rest. … They are built to survive & last, the deep well, (slowly & they learn it together).
They are a very slow burn (pun intended?) & there is beauty in this of course but also a very very needed stand against time. Because they take their time, among a war; because they know there must be a life beyond it & they will not ruin it because of this. They will not let fear of the past & desperation cloud them into mistakes, they will not build this upon that; they will do it right, because they will not simply exist to exist they will live to live… It's why he never crosses that line & it's good because it would have been wrong; he never takes advantage of his command & her as a soldier, that would not be their beginning. It's why she never wanted the oath; she would never ask him to leave it all; she would never ask him (even if she needed to beg to save her own heart from breaking) she would not make him do that; she would not make that their beginning. They take the time to love each other as people first, not for anything more than that. To do this right. They are friends; and they are good true friends; even when it is a silly “just friends” moment, the truth is they are always friends on some level (something neither of them quite have or have had… not like this at least & I don’t mean romantic, I mean in the honest dear closeness they give without need for anything else).
— And in that note:
He stays on his knees ignoring his own burns for hours to give her the slightest relief in drips of water across her face. He sends her breezes. Even the wind carries her to him. THEY ARE FIRE & ICE!!!
“The Old Language word was beautiful on his tongue--and if she'd had a death wish, she might have begged him to speak only in the ancient language, just to savor the exquisite sounds.” — HE HAS AN ACCENT & he speaks MULTIPLE languages *Celaena agrees; swoon*
He bought her chocolate on her birthday🥹
SHE KISSED HIS CHEEK
He brushes her hair😭
He gives her a dagger; a sign of both respect & old fae heroics, but also trust not only from him to her & for her to feel safe with him. … It goes both ways.
He trusts her enough to give her the ability to kill him & burn the world knowing she will not; also trusting without doubt as he knows she is his carranam; and she can & will save them & the world… and she DOES. (She also just knows they are carranam too, she KNOWS)!
He does make the oath.
Gavriel knew Rowan would not want her hurt, he tries to save her for him & to save his friend (he knew); & when he cannot do that, he stops Rowan, because he knew he would die for her. Rowan screams for her, fights them for her, runs into war without a care, because it was her. And she faces the Valg, empowered to claim her title, terrified to let these people die, & unwilling to have him die; she would have died to save him too just the same, & she actually tries to.
They also fight for their lives knowing it is the others life as well (he felt her wound). Knowing what they have to lose & to live for. & still living beyond it. ‘He makes her want to live again. She makes him want to live again too.’
T H E N I G H T G O W N 👀 (even Lysandra knew lol😂 there is no casual way for Aelin & her to have had THAT “borrowing” conversation)😂
He knew who Sam was, he knew why she had that shirt, he knew why she went to the grave. He carried the pebbles too.
He outsmarted Arobynn. A little way, but he used the oil too, he didn’t let Arobynn have that over her. Just for her, to remind her, not because she needed it but because he needed her to know she was not alone. He challenged him. & also CHALLENGED😏 cause was I the only one who thought he gave some implication of how exactly the almond oil got onto both Aelin & him?🤣
He stands with her in the rain (I don’t care how the scene ended IT MEANT SOMETHING)!
Even Aedion knew not (for obvious reasons) including for the little ones; from the second it took to know why Aelin ran smiling “Rowan” or how Rowan held her🥹😊🥰 ‘looked at her the way she deserved to be seen’ THEY ALL SHIP IT
She let him use the expensive lavender soap😭
He understands✨fashion💖 (dragon dress 😉)
He’s happy when she finds a friend in Lysandra; never possessive (a common issue in this genre).
He loves Aedion FOR her (knowing what it meant to her) & becomes his brother (I mean it’s giving “call me brother-in-law” vibes😆)!
He helps her tell her story but always in her time.
She noticed the tiny tear in the cloak😅😭
They plot together… cause couples that plot together… stay together? *& on Lorcans list*😅

This is a bit of a maasverse deep cut but in the bonus chapter for HoF it’s established that fae can have magic that’s essentially a universal translator so the little bean has basis.
Then if we look at the patriarchal themes of the world it makes sense that their care for women is underdeveloped. Madja can heal Cassian’s guts hanging out and shredded wings but not Feyre having her uterus torn. In their patriarchy women are viewed mainly as tools for breeding and are disposable. So why bother with the time to develop techniques to heal a uterus and the birth canal if the male can find a new wife.
Also Feyre was a high fae with an Illyrian child. The Illyrians mainly keep to themselves and are extremely patriarchal so again we run into the conclusion that the women bearing an Illyrian’s children aren’t valued as people worth saving.
Do I think it’s odd that Feyre didn’t shift to save her and Rhys’s life? Yes. Do I think it’s an oddly anti-choice message from a very pro-choice and has fundraised for democrats author? Yes
Just to contrast this with ToG, which is not nearly as patriarchal (I could do a full explanation and thematic analysis so just trust me that it’s a less patriarchal world). The healers can soothe the morning sickness and nausea from pregnancy, they know what herbs can help with a pregnancy, and don’t put pregnant women on essentially bed rest because it might be “bad for the babe”.
It's so baffling to me that the Fae in ACOTAR have language pills, of all the things. But they don't have anything to help with pregnancy issues, and shouldn't they? Children by the Fae are supposed to be rare, from a logical standpoint wouldn't you have a good chunk of magic and/or medicine to help with any issues that come along?? An entire field dedicated to it you would think.

For today’s “I can’t sleep so I’m gonna rant about fiction”
Tumblr media
So basically, here’s why I think that is:
Up until HoD, every Herrscher had been a previously human character we either knew directly from the main story or a character that is attached to someone who is a part of the main story. This created a sort of push and pull where the world was being affected on one front, but our mcs were being affected on entirely other one. Sure, Anna was destroying a city, but that matters a whole lot less than the parallel between the Anna/Crow romance and Kiamei and wondering if our girls are doomed in the same way. Honkai’s strongest writing has always been in its character dramas and relationships, so I think this format worked perfectly.
HoD departed from this by having no personal attachment to our main girls. It honestly seemed more like a vessel to repeat the plot points and themes of the story up until that point back to the audience. It didn’t even know how to hurt the gals personally, each attempt at throwing them into despair was met with a quick “no, you’re wrong. Stfu.” HoC is really more of a plot device than anything. It does what it needs to in order to make the plot happen, but that’s about it. None of the flame chasers seem to have much emotional investment in who the Herrscher is, just in stoping the damage it’s doing.
Anyways, here’s my “off the top of my head, written in two minutes” pitches for how I would’ve handled these Herrscher:
I basically would’ve combined Everlasting Flames with Thus Spoke Apocalypse. I think it would’ve been interesting of HoD was a direct product of Otto’s experiments and was using one of the soulium bodies as the base host. It’s rather outdated reads on the girls could be a reflection of his lack of understanding of them and how they’ve grown. I think this would also create a more gradual transition between the arcs. Have HoD come from the beginnings of Otto reaching/communicating with the Honkai gods. The experiment goes out of control and Otto is actually forced to reach out to his enemies to solve the problem. As he works with them, he sees how they’ve grown and determines they’re ready for the next stage of his plan. Otto being the cause of the major problem could also be his public reasoning for retiring. Side note, but in this version of events, I’d have Kiana only partially become HoF and not have her gain full control of the form until fighting Otto.
I think my pitch for HoC involves less canon changing? Anyways, I’d have HoC be the direct product of Mei’s desperation. I’d introduce the core back when she joined World Serpent by having Kevin directly give it to her and have Mei use it to take back the HoT gem from Kiana. I think this would also put Mei in a greater debt to WS since I’m this scenario, they actually did give her the tools she needed instead of just showing her how to get the tools herself. I’d have the core lay dormant for a couple chapters, slowly gaining more and more power as Mei confronts more Herrschers and gets more desperate. I’d still have it awaken at the same time as it did in canon, but this time, it’s personality would be a corruption of Mei’s ideals that came as a side affect of being with WS. HoC puts the flame chasers into their ideal lives without their consent as a more extremely version of what Mei did to Kiana by deciding what’s best for them even as they scream “I don’t want this.” An added bonus of this would be that by defeating the Herrscher, Elysia would be visually defeating that part of Mei. I think it could be a nice visual representation of how Elysia calmed Mei down and helped get rid of her impatience and desperation.
Anyways, this has been my TED talk. It’s 5am, goodnight/good morning

all this ship war reminds me how ppl shipped Chaol and Celaena and when Rowan was introduced in HOF half of the fandom claimed that there were zero romantic cuddle between Rowan and Aelin, that sjm already had built Chaol and Cealena relationship (they even had sex at that point) so she wasn’t going to end it and that it would be hotly problematic to put Rowan as Aelin’s romantic interest (they even tried to make him look like a villain)
I remember too how ppl were afraid of a love triangule and then in QOS it become obviously how unfit Chaol and Aelin were to each other
And it’s funny bc today there is ppl that still think Aelin should have end up with Chaol and how boring and without chemistry Rowan and Aelin are
It reminds me so much of this el/riel x gywnriel situation
TOG spoilers
The Rowaelin ship is perfection. Just like Chaol said, Rowan saw all of Aelin and he was not afraid. When Chaol saw the Fae side of Aelin, it scared him.
SJM developed Rowaelin's relationship beautifully and it didn't immediately start off with romance. Rowan saw not only the good side of Aelin but he saw how she is at her lowest. Although he was unkind to her at the beginning but he was the only one that ever understood her. He was the only one that saw who Aelin is deep down.
It doesn't matter who comes first or which character they kissed or slept with first or second. Somehow, SJM manages to bring in the right one for the character and doesn't follow a ranking. Whoever feels right for that character will end up with them.
This is why I'm confident Gwyn and Azriel are endgame. She had shown more interactions between them in ACOSF than his with Elain, even though she had no reason to if she was going the Elr*el route and she doesn't have to use a red herring when you already had Elain and Lucien as mates.
Anyhow, the language used in the bonus chapter and how different the scenes for Elain and Gwyn felt with Gwyn's scene of course feeling lighter and more positive. And let's not forget the chapter ended with Azriel basically daydreaming about Gwyn.

Hey there, I love your art and it's made me soso curious about what it's depicting but I feel a bit lost on where to begin! Could you point me towards the start of your stories? I would love to read and enjoy the worlds you've created!
Ohh hello there and thank you so much! I hope this answer doesn't come too late (I've still doing a bit of a social media blackout during the workdays) x)
Tumblr media
Now to answer the question!
Generally I'd say to go through as it was posted (if you have a look at The Overview, the stories and comics are ordered that way).
Heart of Fire, The Warrior and Comic one, Tale of Moons, are year one content. I'd suggest reading HoF as soon as possible, because it answered the question about why and how the comics are even able to happen. Also all of Comic 1 to 3 happens during the initial Chapters of HoF.
Wizard of Cowdenbeath, Kilchoan and Comic Two (Starheart) was year two. The comic does not depend on the stories here, once you read HoF you can read through the first three without needing further context.
WoC and Kilchoan do belong together, intended to be read in that order but I think one could switch them around if one would want.
Leitnacht is a more light hearted bonus story referencing back to the first Comic, building on what happened in Tale of Moons.
Now year three will be Parts and Fragments, Return to Darkness and if I manage it The Court Wizard - running alongside Comic Three (Kings and Legends)
PaF and RtD belong firmly together. PaF also ties back all the previous stories and shouldn't be read before the rest - there would be a lot of context missing!
So my go through recommendation would be this order:
Heart of Fire
The Warrior
Tale of Moons
Wizard of Cowdenbeath
Kilchoan
Starheart
Leitnacht
Kings and Legends (ongoing)
Parts and Fragments
Return to Darkness (Starts 26.02.22)
Especially with the year one content it helps to have a little bit of knowledge about the Gloryhammer Stuff, but I think most gets explained along the way anyways. There was a war and one evil wizard Zargothrax, earth blew up and both Angus and Zargothrax died in the end. (OR did they?) And that's where all of this starts. That's all one gotta know. xD
Again, thank you so much <3

Thanks for rereading and reblogging about HoF, I just read the bonus chapter of the book because I didn't know it existed even though I felt I missed something when reading about her new... Nickname, after that ahaha🌌
❤️❤️❤️ I feel a little bad for all the spam. But not enough to stop 🤣🤣
That's the thing I hate about bonus chapters is that not everyone has access to them which can create chaos in some fandoms and ships

@ssardothien has asked me to lay out my case for Rowan Whitethorn Galathynius as compared to Casteel Hawkethrone Da'Neer (see this post which describes exactly why Casteel is my #1 undisputable fictional crush.)
So here an incomplete list of why I love Rowan Whitethorn:
He's beautiful. Silver hair, green eyes? The physique? The TATTOOS? PINE AND SNOW? The strength? The gentleness? He's perfect.
Even though he was enslaved to a terrible terrible queen, he came out of it with a mostly intact moral compass. There's no moral dilemma or indecision about what he should do or what is right? He's just like "yeah I'm not a mass murderer anymore" and doesn't struggle with it
He's fucking sexy. That scene in Queen of Shadows where he says he doesn't want an audience. Like DAMN. That was really it for me. Like Rowan went from "hot" to "sexy as hell" with that one line.
The DEVOTION. Like "To Whatever End." "I claim you". Sure, he spends some time feeling guilty about Lyria, and sure he tries to deny his feelings for Aelin, but he's never unsure about working for/with Aelin. Once he's in, he's in. There's no leaving Aelin, there's no backing out. He's just a fulling sending Aelin simp.
The casual intimacy. Like even in Heir of Fire, he and Aelin are just so comfortable. They literally sleep in the same bed, he holds her hand, he's just there, you know? In a way that is comfortable
The Heir of Fire Bonus Chapter. Knowing that he loves her even then. That they don't want to be seperated, that he felt so comfortable telling her about Sollomere. The jokes about Remelle? priceless.
He's kind of a gossip and I love it. Breaking the shield around Dorian and Manon? Revealing Aedion and Lysandra? The comment about Elide holding Lorcan's leash. The fact that he understands what Fenrys and Aelin mean to each other. He's just in tune with people and isn't obnoxious about it.
The Eye fucking Conversations. I feel like this is where we see Rowan's sense of humor the most. He's sassy without saying a single word.
"Fireheart" Like this man takes terms of endearment and kicks a 70 yard field goal (yes this an american football reference, it's the only sport I understand, the longest field goal ever is 64 yards). Like one word that says so much.
He's not afraid to take charge of a situation, but it doesn't hurt his ego. Like he's good with making a battle plan and executing it, and he's also good with following Aelin's lead, without having a conniption about it. He trusts her to take care of herself, and the only time he second guesses her is when she has to sacrifice herself.
The way that he loves Aelin, but his kindness doesn't end with her. There are a lot of fictional males who are nice to just the love interest, or are weirdly defensive. But Rowan isn't like that. He's kind to Aedion and Dorian and Elide and Lysandra and even Fenrys, Gavriel, and Lorcan in KOA. He doesn't rage to the other members of the court when Aelin is taken. He's not rude to Chaol in QOS, when he may have reason to feel jealous or defensive. Once he starts opening up in HOF, he doesn't ever stop.
The Wyrdmark tattoos. The map home. I can't write more about this without crying.
GIVE ME TWO FICTIONAL CHARACTERS AND I'LL TELL YOU WHICH ONE I'D RATHER DATE
