ill start with the fun ones first. dirge classed into warlock pre tadpoling, and specifically was a great old one warlock, meaning hes been practicing psionics for a VERY long time. and god does he love that shit. years of managing the Urge and careful studious dedication to death cult religious doctrine forged his will into quenched steel, and being on the receiving end of any of his psionics really makes you fucking feel it. dirge absolutely DELIGHTS in the experience of subjecting someone to his domination because he enjoys the panicked wriggling feeling of someone trying to flee but realizing theres nowhere to go because hes carving a path into their head. his patron itself is a star and, deriving his powers from it, his psionics themselves carry the sensation of irrepresible unavoidable crushing gravity. his willpower quite literally squeezes you until you start cracking open. another tactic hes fond of, and one he used to dominate the elder brain, is to compress the entirety of his willpower through psionics into a single point smaller than a needle, and then watching it puncture clean through a victims mental defenses like they arent even there. when hes torturing for pleasure, and not business, he makes a point of encircling their mental defenses and then steadily increasing the strain he places on them from all sides so he can watch the cracks start forming, and then breaks their will in one clean snap before digging through their mind for choice tidbits of information. whatevers leftover when hes done scavenging usually isnt enough to rebuild someones psyche from the sheer psychic trauma, which is all well and good because he typically doesnt let them live after anyways.

the lobotomy took out most of that particular skillset but a combination of practicing on absolutists (he uses illithid domination often enough to get the True Soul tag before even leaving the emerald grove) and tadpole skills has him getting back into the general swing of it

physically he enjoys the sensation of pain QUITE a lot. hes very sensory seeking and pain as a stimulus is "loud" enough to block out most other senses if its severe enough, so he enjoys it as stress relief. he also quite enjoys inflicting novel forms of agony onto other people. when he isnt playing nice and acceptable around people he cares about, dirge has a very strong cruel streak. if he gets the chance to indulge it at all, itll typically be with the last surviving member of an attacking enemy group, with the rest having been used to satiate his impulsive craving for gore and destruction. he particularly savors forms of emotional torment, bolstered by his sharp insight and overwhelming charisma. pre tadpole he did hobbyist vivisections to pass the time between his duties, and while thats fallen off post tadpoling, he still enjoys many of the skills and what they can inflict upon people. when dirge decides to indulge himself, he can get downright hedonistic about it, and his sadism streak is one of the clearest examples, drawing out a short stint of combat into a long, excrutiating death. he savors being the catalyst of suffering and treasures the experience of the myriad ways an individual can respond to torment. in particular he favors methods that draw blood or burn as the smell of bloodletting or charred flesh are particularly satisfying to him, but he does find enjoyment in being in close enough proximity to smell the way stress and fear affects the scent of their sweat. he enjoys flaying skin and carving open bodily cavities to expose organs to light and air, he enjoys carefully severing tendons and muscle groups just to watch someone in a panic try to flee anyways, and while he isnt super hype about raw bone marrow he DOES find the experience of cracking small joints to be particularly satisfying. dirge rarely goes for anything on the face because he wants to see the expressions they make, and only starts damaging that area when hes close to done playing with someone.

he enjoys when people try to beg, or plead, or bargain, because he takes small petty pleasure in exercising that kind of power over someone, just to deny them and bluntly inform them that this only ends when he feels like it, and driving home that state of utter helplessness. if hes feeling particularly understimulated, he'll force his way into a victims mind just to cram himself into their sensory perception so he gets front row seats for the agony he inflicts and his victims subsequent emotional response. he'll also do this if someones feeling clammy or stoic and not producing the kind of visible reactions hes hunting for, and he WILL freely transition to psionic torture if physical methods arent cutting it. he rarely, if ever, has to do the reverse because a combination of Urge-born madness and god ensconcing willpower typically means a victim isnt capable of meaningfully surviving it, allowing dirge to freely set the pace for whatever sensation hes hunting for

poison for dirge is more like a torture seasoning than a full meal in itself. its like a fun like extra spice sprinkled in for his enjoyment. he has a fondness for paralytics and neurotoxins, but still retains a healthy admiration for blood cell destroying animal venoms. conotoxins are a quickfire way to learn a lot of upsetting biology really quickly as you find out, in detail, exactly what a cone snail can do to your body and how fast itll happen, and if your really unlucky this will be a hands on learning experience.

if hes ever upset something traumatic happened to a companion, its rarely about what happened and more about it happening to someone he cares about. dirge is typically very upfront about this aspect of his personality, and fairly consistently behaves morally worse when people like karlach and wyll arent around to implicitly encourage him away from it, but WILL engage in petty self serving sadism when its a target he feels will garner no objections (cazador has an Extremely Fucking Bad Time) or he feels its a small enough infraction to go unremarked on (minor annoyances and irritation WILL manifest as deliberately non lethal attacks meant solely to inflict pain). a general willingness to capitulate to the requests of loved ones, even if they arent physically present (dirge abstains from being an ass to the tiefling refugees even when karlach and wyll are at camp) and a habit of avoiding rocking the boat (dirge typically only needs to be told off once or twice about his bad habits before he takes the lesson) means that despite being very openly sadistic, he rarely pushes the people hes around into being uncomfortable with him, and everyone else has to sit there and weigh their moral code against a loved one who can, will, and often has literally gone to hell and back for them for no other reason than they asked him to do so.

Okay, I somehow narrowed it down to a top five (honorable mentions are basically every single other vault) (except Vault 81) ( i wish the experiment actually happened and the overseer didnt shut it down i wanted the psychological horror :/ )

Vault 77- This is the crate of puppets vault, featuring the crate of puppets guy. This Vault wasn't a part of any game, rather it is from a comic that was promo material for fallout 3. and like, penny arcade understood the assignment on demonstrating how fucked up vault-tec is in thirty six panels. Like my one critique is that it's so short, but with the direction they went with the plot and the topics they tackled and it being 2008, it was probably for the best. Anyways the whole comic is free on the Internet Archive and its a nice snappy read (almost to its detriment like straight up plz someone get ari aster on the phone he'd make a fantastic adaptation of one man and a crate of puppets legit)

Vault 112- ooh hoo hoo unlike most vaults that I just remember from reading the wiki blurbs back in high school, this one was fully brought to my attention in a game of magic where i exiled a ridiculous amount of my library to get a winning card and also my missing dad (shout out to adventure costs!!!) and in that game i vowed to find it. I didnt know that it was a part of the main plot of fo3 yet but that didn't take long to find out. This is the creepy simulation one that i see as almost a proof of concept for the evil within vibes-wise (i fucking love the evil within series but thats besides the point). Legit terrified me in a way that should not have been possible (maybe im the one with unchecked issues that people being saccharinely nice to me sets off alarm bells in my head but it could also be that i had to get into a vr pod first) (who knows?) Anyways I proceeded to ignore like half of it and I'm looking forward to the next time i play and actually interacting with it a bit more (also one of my twelve fallout ocs is from this vault i made it work given this vault's canon ending)

Vault 11- Oughhhhhhh epistolary enviromental just altogether wonderful storytelling. the posters. The Posters! The ones that read "I Hate Nate" but the deeper down you go the more you find that have been graffitied to read "I Hate Kate" perfect wonderful amazing. Not to mention granting us with "Don't Vote Glover He Has A Family" which idk I love that out of context but I do. In context it's downright horrifying and the absurdity of it actually adds to the horror. Love love love Vault 11.

Vault 108- Gary. Gary Gary? Gary! Okay in all seriousness the story of this one is bonkers and also I'm a sucker for cloning (I had a cloning phase in third grade). Like, they found a guy that was going to die in a few months to be overseer so that there would be a power vacuum. Okay, normal social experiment for vault-tec. This eventually leads to them cloning a guy named Gary and then all the Gary clones killing the rest of the dwellers so now the only people in the vault are Gary clones. For the life of me I do not remember the chain of events that led to it and no i will not look it up it's funnier this way.

Vault 88- Look this one is boring to most people. Its a mix reviewed Fallout 4 DLC but dammit, I like getting to design my own Vault. As someone who got into Fallout because of the Vaults it was incredibly appealing to get to be the villain for once. And then I saw that my victim was this sweet guy named Clem (and also I was playing a goody two shoes but thats besides the point). Like I can tell they wanted to write Clem to be annoying so that you felt less bad basically torturing him but I found him so sweet and earnest I just couldnt. I fucking love Clem I would die for Clem hes like if a golden retriever was a person that I wanted to make sure kept his agency and autonomy. Plus it was really fun getting to piss the overseer off with some actually decent written dialogue. Like bonus points for that. And I still havent finished building the vault! amazing. absolutely wacky but also amazing.

4. A heroine you love?

I need to stop bringing FF13 in here all the time but I !!!! LOVE!!!! VANILLE!!!!! SO MUCH

With the way FF13 is written, it makes it seem as though Lightning is the true protagonist, but really the protagonist of the story is Vanille and her whole story is all about running away from the wrongs she had done and eventually facing it head on with the power of emotional support and friendship. She's the one who provides all the narration in the game, even if she isn't present in the scene itself, and she is the very cause of all things gone wrong in the story as well.

AND THE THING IS she also sits as one of my fave character types "bubbly front to mask how absolutely anxious she is deep inside". She tries to be super positive and keeps trying to solve things with 'let's run away!' but running away doesn't get her too far and all things of the past come back to get her in the end. Her story -- just as everyone else's is here -- is all about growing from that self-hatred, leaning more into 'how do you forgive yourself?' and it's just sO good and I love this liar so much. She deserves so much good

Also she's wlw so that's also my plus on that.

It took me a while because I had to sort out between villain and antagonist BUT I finally remembered Delilah Briarwood from Legend of Vox Machina :]

You know that trope of a guy goes nuts after his wife dies? okay thats her :) Except she takes death and chokes it by becoming a necromancer to bring her husband back and now she has a hot vampire husband. She also fucks up one of the protagonist's lives (my fave character from the series LOL) by taking his whole estate and killing his family and keeping his sister captive all these years and terrorizing the entire city.

But also shes happy with her dead husband being alive. Power couple but the absolute worse (I love them anyways)

6. A female character who got done dirty by the narrative?

SIGNORAAAAAAA. I'm still pissed about it tbh and I miss her everyday my wife :(

The thing is I knew her story as the Crimson Witch beforehand, and I knew her story with Rostam as well (one of my fave stories actually heheh)! So I knew a lot of her background and just.... her death was so.... sooooo done dirty. Or just her general treatment altogether was just a mess. It really sucks that you don't get to know her unless you really dig, and she got built up to be such a ruthless character only to perish in an instant ;; It makes me so sad...

15. Female character you would defend with your life?

I was trying to think about this because I just knoooow there's a character out there that I didn't care for until the fans made it my business and then now I love aggressively... I think if there's any character that kinda fits that bill... I tuink it might be Lightning (ANOTHER FF13 CHARACTER HAHAHA-)

Maybe this is just extended from the fact that people didn't like FF13 as well back in the day and I came into the series very very late with this actually being my first FF13? So maybe because of how special it is for me, I defend the game and the characters like my life depends on it lmao But Lightning is just a great character. I love that she eventually learns that 'fighting is not therapy' (that meme thats like 'fight therapy im becoming a knight wait what do you mean thats unhealthy?' yeah thats her whole character arc in a nutshell). I'l never forget how she was like 'You just have to fight your way through it' to a 14 year old kid and then nearly got her sister's fiance killed as a result of the very very bad lesson she learned and you can see the instant regret on her face like 'oh.....i fucked up bad.'

She's a very very awkward dad character. But damn does she try her best and damn does she love her sister so much she's just ass at showing it because she's too worried about trying to be the strong and reliable older sibling after the two got orphaned.

Anyways. I love FF13 so much I think more people should discover the game (and talk to me about it)
