Season 2... wasn't great

Okay, these are just some (probably quite unpopular) personal thoughts and feelings, but I've just finished season 2 of Arcane and wow, did the writing fall right off a cliff. What happened???

In season 1, every scene, every line of dialogue, every character arc was fucking PERFECTION. It was unreal. I sat there watching in total awe as the bar was raised on what a TV show could be. I had the chemistry of my brain rearranged. I was a big, big fan... and then season 2 came out.

Where in season 1 every line of dialogue built towards a perfect whole, ep 2.07 was an entire 40 minutes of tv that didn't matter. That episode should have been a three minute montage MAX. A cool montage of life as it could have been in the alternate world(s) would have worked perfectly well to establish both Ekko's maguffin from that episode and Jace's visions of horror (which is all we actually learnt from that episode of 40 entire minutes of my life I'll never get back).

NOt to mention, the whole 'Caitlyn and Vi GAS ATTACK ZORN' plotline was done in a single montage that never had any other consequences so why the hell not. If you can put one character's defining moment in a montage, why not two or three? Side note: their relationship had the potential to be so interesting and instead every terrible thing Caitlyn says and does in the first half of the season is brushed under the carpet because... *checks notes* slay lesbians?

They did so much cool set up with the politics in season 1 and fuck me, was I disappointed in the way all that brilliant work was wasted in season 2. Why bother setting up intricate, inspired political & personal storylines in the first place if everything is going to end with out-of-left-field mage crap and a bunch of episodes that mean nothing even in universe? I'm so tired.

My final thoughts are these:

Maybe Arcane season 2 makes more sense and does more justice to the characters if you've played League of Legends, or researched the lore. Unfortunately, that's no excuse because a TV show should be able to stand on its own two feet. Plus, I thought season 1 went insanely hard without knowing any of the lore so it's obviously possible.

Ignoring the real possibility he intentionally let himself be caught from the little we know so far Luigi Mangione's case is a fascinating combination of astonishing brilliance and confusing stupidity. This young man plans and executes his assassination and escape with such a meticulous care and calmness that it's suspected that he's a professional hitman. He comes up with Riddler-sque moves like writing his manifesto poetically on the bullets and leaving his backpack behind full of Monopoly money. He carefully wears a mask to avoid being identified but removes it because a woman who was checking him into the hostel was flirting with him and wanted to see his smile. He still manages to escape the most surveilled city in the country in the midst of ongoing national manhunt only to get caught in the middle of bumfuck nowhere Pennsylvania while eating at the McDonalds. Because for some reason he had the same clothes and mask as in New York and was carrying the same gun and suppressor. And when the cops detained him he showed them the same fake id he used in New York. And oh yeah he's a frat bro gym rat who has a masters degree in computer science from Penn but reads stupid self-help books about being on the grind and is 'anti-woke' while being bisexual suffering from anxiety and wanting to end oppressive capitalism. Not even god himself could invent a person like this

Now that Eurovision is over, I want you all, especially the Americans, to take a good hard look at how the voting results turned out when people boycotted the event.

In the UK, the viewing figures were down about 2 million people compared to last year. Up to 2 million people made the conscious decision to not watch and not vote because of Israel's inclusion.

The final results of the public vote, Israel came in first place in the UK and got 12 points. Because the only people watching and voting were people who backed Israel or at least didn’t care one way or another.

This doesn't matter. It's a music contest. The boycott was still the right thing to do because it is just a show at the end of the day, and the viewing figures have more impact than the results.

But it is also a good object lesson to show you what happens if you boycott a vote over something that does matter. Choosing not to vote in, let's say, a presidential election will have similar results.
