Lucifer can’t get hiccups.

A shame really-Because he finds them absolutely ADORABLE. They are the mortal version of a rubber duck squeak.

So tiny. So precious. So human.

Oh- He has tried to trigger his own hiccup-fit; but after a millennium or two, Lucifer has begrudgingly accepted that it’s never going to happen. It’s disappointing, but He is not mortal and his angelic body doesn’t need to randomly spasm in such a way. (After all this time, He’s still not even sure why humans bodies did it. Seriously- besides being cute- it served no purpose whatsoever)

The hotels resident radio demon however? For all his sense of propriety and self-control; was still once a human being. His demonic attributes do NOT make him immune to the embarrassing condition.

A fact Lucifer gleefully discovered after a night of drunkenly swapping puns and terrible dad jokes with his daughter’s creepy hotelier.

Alastor’s laughter ringing through the hotel lobby; before dissolving into a fit of unrefined snorts, hiccups, and -“Apple of Eden, was that a BLEAT?”

Oh; that had no right being as adorable -interesting-as it was. And it was definitely not something Lucifer would exploit for his own amusement in the future.

she's actually pretty amused

she knows she's not as publicly affectionate with her idiot bird as her daughters may be, so she can't exactly expect everyone to know who they belong to, especially when this maid is so new

had it been anyone else, she probably would have made it obvious that the person this new maid was flirting with was hers, but she also enjoys seeing them get so flustered and panicked as they look around for her

she knows a clear attempt at an escape from social talks when she sees one, but she remains in her chair, taking a drink from her wine glass as she watches the scene unfold

it's only when the maid drags her hand along their shoulder that she does something about it

she stands and moves to them, something they clearly react to with the way their shoulders sag and they take a more confident step away

her hand finds their shoulder easily, pulling them against her side as she offers them her wine glass. she keeps her eyes on the new maid, giving her a small but knowing smile as her little crow drinks from her glass

that's all that needs to be done; whether the maid was trying to get into their pants or just wanted a better job isn't her concern, seeing how she now keeps her head down throughout the halls and remains quiet during her tasks

she holds more authority over the castle than her daughters do, and while she hadn't said a word, the effect is obvious

to her credit, the maid does become a model staff member. she assumes it's because Alcina is now watching her every move, ensuring she does not try anything again, but after some time, she does let up a little

later that week, when neither are busy, her partner finds her in her office, pouting as they enter and slump in their usual chair

she merely laughs at their expression and kisses their knuckles, reassuring them she won't do that again

she does tell them that if something like that happens in the future, she wants them to come to her immediately. she simply won't tolerate her partner being made uncomfortable in their own home

on the off-chance another maid does try again sometime later, she'll make it known very quickly that they are not to be touched. a firm kiss on their neck that leaves a bright red lipstick stain is surely enough to scare away potential gold-diggers

this has never happened before

she knows her idiot bird would never do something like this, not directly in front of her, so her mood only sours when she realizes the maid must be trying her luck to get in her family's good graces

she supposes she can see where the maid is even coming from, to assume her lover is another staff member; they're dressed in a simple button-up shirt and pants, and they followed her request to pour her some tea before they sat down...

yeah, she can see why the maid would think that

the first comment that's made to them mostly catches her off-guard, at first. she doesn't expect to hear a comment about how obedient they are right in front of her

even her poor, oblivious lover has to do a double-take on what was said, only to get a wink and a giggle in return as the maid left the library

her idiot bird makes a comment on how strange that interaction was, and they seem to think nothing of it

Bela, however, knows better

she's a little touchier that evening, something they also comment on, which leaves them with a clear bite mark on their shoulder the next morning

she assumes that's the end of it, and the maid doesn't even cross her mind as she continues her duties around the castle

...that is until she opens the Dining Hall doors a week later just as the maid presses a kiss to their cheek

nope. nuh uh

the other staff members preparing for dinner all freeze when they see what's happened, some glancing at her, others refusing to look up from their plates or silverware

the maid serves as an example of what happens when you get a little too friendly with the resident idiot bird in Castle Dimitrescu

she did make quite a fine wine, though

similar to her mother, she finds the whole thing hilarious

it's a mix of her thinking it's funny to see her partner be so oblivious to what's happening and her already planning this maid's demise

you don't touch what's hers right in front of her and expect to leave without a few missing fingers, whether you knew it or not beforehand

honestly, she's more surprised at this maid's dimwittedness than anything else; how does one see Cassandra only interact with her family or this little idiot and assume the latter must be safe to go after?

she allows it to go on for a while, mostly because she's interested to see how far the maid will take things

she makes a game of it; handing her partner a blade she's crafted, teasing them as she usually does, kicking them under the table during meals... all normal things every other staff member is used to

but this one doesn't seem to get the hint, and so she takes it further

her partner doesn't realize anything is amiss or that she's playing this one-sided game with a maid, and she prefers it that way

there comes a day that she returns to the castle in the evening after a long hunt (and plenty of possessive kissing) that the maid actually boldly flirts with them while she's only a few steps away

she doesn't consider herself a jealous person. she won't chase after people or fight others for someone. if they wanted her, they would make an effort for her, as her idiot bird has always done

however, something in her chest snaps when she hears the maid make a comment about undressing them and helping them bathe

they were bloody, and she'd planned to make their night more interesting before she cleaned them both up, but she decides that evening she has had enough

she watches her partner back up and into her side as they quickly apologize and tell her they're fine, and she grabs a hold of their hip as her fingers clench

she doesn't get her calm evening until well after midnight as she teaches that maid a lesson, though she doesn't kill her. not yet, anyway

that'll be saved for when her duties take much longer to be completed with several missing fingers and her mother takes notice

until then, she will wait. she's always been a patient person, after all

the first time her lover tells her they're pretty sure this new maid is flirting with them, she laughs it off and blames it on how cute they are

she doesn't think they're serious. how can they be? everyone in the castle knows they're off-limits

the second time they come to her, more confused than anything else, she still brushes it off, but she's a little worried, now

what business did a maid have with them, anyway? are they blind or stupid?

it's not until she actually sees the maid touching her little dove that she realizes it's a problem. she doesn't like the way she continues trying to touch them despite her hands being pushed off of their arms, or the way her eyes droop and she smirks

she's all too familiar with the way women flirt, having used most of those techniques herself, and she feels her heart twist in her chest as her lover looks around for her, clearly a little distraught

the obvious relief on their face as they spot her nearby makes her feel a little better, but she notices the way her hands grab onto them possessively, and she doesn't really like it

she doesn't want to be like that with them. she trusts them, and she knows they'll put a stop to anything before it escalates

even so, she's not like the rest of her family. she isn't afraid of publicly kissing them or even of sitting in their lap on the sofa in the foyer as she deliberately has that same maid bring them some tea and pastries

she assumes that's the end of it. the maid sees they're off-limits, sees the way she nuzzles into their neck and the way she makes them laugh and become flustered... even an imbecile would know what she was doing

and yet, she sees the challenge in the maid's eyes when they narrow slightly

oh. this will be interesting

the game continues for some time, and she wonders if it's because most of the staff don't take her very seriously or they assume she'll grow tired of her partner like she has with several others

she kisses them when it's appropriate to, places her favorite flowers behind their ears, places jewelry on them from rocks she found...

yeah, yeah. even she will admit she went a little overboard, but kissing them on the lips in front of the maid seems to do the trick, finally

she's not really done, though, and one night, as her lover sleeps peacefully bare in her bed, she ventures to where she knows her family can give specific orders to the maids for their next shift

as she settles back in with her partner, cuddling into their warm chest, she wonders if Cassie will enjoy a new helping hand down in the cellar...
