Something that’s always missing whenever people talk about Lyanna and the Kingsguard at the Tower of Joy is that these things should always circle back to Jon Snow. He’s our main character here. Rhaegar and Lyanna, as well as the Kingsguard, are all dead. They were dead before this story began. This tiny section of text is meant to give color to Jon — who is alive, and whose story is currently unfolding. The events at the Tower of Joy, told entirely through Ned’s fever dream for a reason, essentially serve as one thing: fantasy protagonist myth building 101. Three wise men, a legendary magical sword, some of the greatest knights of an era, a dying queen lady, the end of an age, a dead prince, a dead king, and then here comes a soon to be completely orphaned prince whose life hangs on the balance and whose survival depends on the compassion of one lord and his wizard friend. GRRM is literally retelling King Arthur’s backstory through Jon. This whole thing is one giant literary allusion to Uther and Igraine and the boy king Arthur, to Lancelot and his Joyous Guard, to Guinevere, and to tragic romances. It reads as an ode to Arthurian fantasy and is meant to backdrop the main protagonist’s fantastical origins. The Kingsguard are there to play into that. Their presence at the Tower, in that moment, was never about Lyanna; not solely, anyway. Their presence is tied to Rhaegar’s last surviving male child, and the language used suggests that they had chosen their king, for better or worse. Any discussion surrounding the Kingsguard’s presence at the Tower that focuses on anyone but Jon completely misses the point imo.

oh fuck yes baby boy NEEDS a snuggle so fuckin bad. Jay is SO motherfucking - his full name is Janasheen Lagmani Mufti btw (successor, born at nightfall, one who gives council or legal advice) - Jay is SO motherfuckin touch starved that he'll get injured on purpose just so he can feel you touch him up. After a while you start to catch onto this because you don't have the heart to tell him he's not quite as slick as he thinks he is. So OBVIOUSLY I have a medieval game OBVIOUSLY I have a jousting game the only way you're gonna get him to turn into your snuggly lil bunbun (yes he does insist you call him that after you say it once as a joke and he loses his mind) is to make him think YOU'RE really the one who needs cuddles. like of course you're feeling kinda sad and tired from all your schoolwork so of COURSE you need a big strong tough cool guy star of the tourney team to make you feel all safe and cozy. obviously it's TOTALLY for your benefit. not at all because Jay was not hugged once as a child! that's hilarious and true and totally not the reason at all! I just washed my hands that's why they're wet! no other reason!

but yeah once you actually start cuddling with him it's going to take approximately less that six seconds for him to become a total and complete velcro boyfriend. it takes longer to watch any vine in existance than it does for Jay to latch onto you like a small baby bird. he did not know that touchy feely stuff could be so... nice. especially when it's with you. he tried giving Carlos and Evie and Mal bear hugs between classes when he's away from you and it was good, but it wasn't the same. Maybe it's because Carlos still thinks he's going to get suplexed whenever Jay grabs him like that or maybe it's because Mal keeps asking if he huffed her spraypaint and that's why he's so huggy out of nowhere (Evie doesn't mind too much as long as he doesn't wrinkle her outfits or mess with her hair and makeup. she actually approves of you two and likes that you're bringing out Jay's more affectionate side. she makes a mental note to give you the friends and family discount on any future designs you order from her.) but shortly after that first time you snuggled up with Jay and had him tell you all about the video games he's been playing and about tourney practice he's full on addicted to your touch and cuddles. Coach sometimes has to pull you off your extra curriculars to give Jay hugs and kisses during practice when he cops an attitude or gets too rowdy. you're known as the Jay whisperer immediately and believe me the nickname sticks. 1. Toki’to was born in the Black Shroud, the second son and the sixth child in a large family. He took up the tradition of most Shroud Keepers and left to wander on his own when he was still young. It was not a kind lifestyle to him, and he sought to settle in Gridania, where he became an apprenticed carpenter. Still, he struggled to find community or kinship in Gridania until he met a young Keeper woman named Avi. They fell in love and Toki’to, having little reason to stay in Gridania, traveled with Avi across Eorzea. Toki’to is quiet, but attentive, with an anxious and kind heart. He’s happy his children have a family and community that will love them as he does.

2. Avi was born in Corvos, and was 10 years old when the Garleans invaded. Her family, along with a handful of other families, fled to Thavnair and further West by way of boat. They sought refuge in Limsa Lominsa, but were redirected south towards a coupling of islands beyond the Cieldales. Their group settled on the largest one, named Sostomi after a Lalafelan pirate captain who once called the island home. The experience of fleeing Corvos and traveling by boat for months and weeks at a time left a taste of travel and adventure in Avi, and she yearned to see more of the world for herself. She left for Eorzea when she was deemed old enough, and traveled across the continent for many years before she became pregnant with her and Toki’to’s first son, Aya. They returned to Sostomi together to raise their family in the arms of Avi’s loving community. Avi is adventurous and thrill seeking, and regularly acted out her adventures with her children. She does the same now for her grandchildren.

3. Though Avi’li writes often (excluding that time he was a fugitive in Ishgard, and excluding the time when he was traveling across the world to help end two occupations) but he’s sparse with the true details of what he’s experienced. How can he put into the words some of the horrors he’s seen? How can he bare to make them worry? Despite his best efforts, Avi and Toki’to know he keeps things from them, and they worry. Every day they don’t get a letter from Tataru, who now keeps them abreast of Avi’li’s wellbeing, is another day another one of their children might not return home.
