See, I don't really think Architecture is as hard of a major as Payu and Rain claim it is.
Payu looks freshly bathed and put together, not like he's on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
#the focuses of my major were in advanced feature writing and media psychology#media psychology courses were mostly reading- which i did along with most of my homework during the 3 hours i had free midday#and then you'd have accompanying stuff like 'watch 3 episodes of the kardashian's show' for the reality television study#or 'watch sex scenes from television shows on these networks at these timeslots and compare what type of content is presented'#that was for sex in media#or for the 2 classes i had on satire in news in general and then a specific focus on the daily show for another class#so i had to watch a few of those kinds of shows- colbert and stewart each night plus a couple others as directed#and then advanced feature writing i just had to write a movie which really isn't hard to 2 draft if you have solid groundwork#so my homework was 'be creative and tell a story' and 'watch television'#my roommate the education major who was always slammed with homework used to nag me so much about only having fun in the room lol#I had a 3.75 GPA but she only saw me work in the room if I had a paper to write lol#it caused a lot of tension at the time but we laugh about it now#love in the air#lita#payu

Characters in poverty in media don't end up selling sex often enough.
Poor people in real life are a lot more likely to sell sex than characters on TV and in books and in films are.
The reason that characters are so much less likely to? Selling sex makes characters seem unsympathetic to the viewer, and rather than challenging the stigma it's easier to have them suffer and not lower themselves to selling sex or to have them struggle through finding other work and pulling themselves from poverty that way.
Doing sex work isn't shameful and it's okay to have your characters do it! In times of financial desperation, people are highly likely to consider sex work, even when it's something they view negatively. If a character is in prolonged poverty and does not consider sex work and knows no-one who does it, that is an unlikely scenario and you'd expect the circumstances to account for it. Your main character might not do sex work, but they should probably know another character who does (whether they're close or not).
If you're poor and so are all your friends, you're going to be in proximity to some kind of sex work. It's weird when that's sanitized from so much of the media I watch!
#anti swerf#sex work is work#media criticism#I think about this all the time when characters are poor in a show#or come from a poor background#and I have to assume they do/did have this proximity but it's unshown#but then someone makes a dead hooker joke or something#and it's like????#does it not occur to you#that they would know sex workers???

Look, I think we can all agree with the fact that abuse thrives in darkness. So explain to me why a 21 year old used the word pdfile and pronounce it exactly like that when we were talking about child abuse. Censoring the word does nothing. It literally took me several seconds to understand what she was saying. Clear communication is vital when someone comes or tries to come forward. It can be the difference between them feeling seen and heard and refusing to divulge anything. When you censor words like that in real life there can be consequences because you are obscuring information and hurting communication. Use the proper words. And if they make you so uncomfortable you can’t use them then maybe you shouldn’t be having a conversation that requires use of those words.
#I understand this is part of a larger issue regarding the censorship of words on social media#but its also part of a larger issue which is how quickly we are headed toward a culture where these things are not acceptable to talk about#where you can’t talk about sex or relationships or abuse even with those you are close to because its not proper#and GOD I’m fuckin tired

BBC Merlin being about 'magic' for 7 minutes gay
#not to be all autistic about media analysis again but i think fandom tends to overlook the symbolic/metaphorical aspect of queer subtext#a show can be queer coded because two same sex characters have an intense relationship with homoerotic undertones#or it can be queer coded because it conveys themes of alienation. repressed identity. oppression. internalised shame#Merlin does both. several times over#gay ass wizard show#bbc merlin#merlin#merthur#magic is gay#magic as a metaphor#flashing#flashing lights#< thanks to photosensitive-despair for advising me to change the tags

I'm going to go insane why must every single aromantic character be also asexual I know aroace people exist but if so many characters can just be ace why is there not a single fucking character who is just aromantic people are still so fucking weird about aroallos I'm screaming. oh and if a character is not in a relationship but they're sleeping around then they're just waiting for the right person to settle with!!! and if a character rejects love and their whole deal is rejecting romantic love then there will also be a small addendum that actually they don't like to have sex either. stop it stop it stop it stop it!!!! give me aroallo characters!!!!!!
#even my fucking favorite pieces of media fall into this!!!!!!#oh this character really likes romance but doesn't like romance when its applied to her omg shes aro :)#oh she suddenly added that she also doesnt want to have sex ok well that was out of nowhere and added nothing to her character#why why why why why why#aromantic#arophobia#aroallo

ive said this before but i think a lot about how literature/media about female assassins could be used as an allegory for trafficking and prostitution. these characters are often young and/or vulnerable women stolen and forced to become killers. they often have a handler (usually male) who gains most/all of the profit from the people who hired them to kill. they often have to use sensuality to lure their target. and theres also themes of agency and bodily autonomy. UGH there is so much potential and i need more of these written/directed by women bc most of whats out right now is just male gaze-y femme fatale type of characters. (if you have any recommendations pls send them my way)
(this post was brought to you by me re/reading laura kinney comics and rewatching the black widow movie) (yeah yeah marvel bad but unfortunately i am addicted)

Asexuals can just bring up the fact that there's very little authentic representation for us and that maybe we would like some more of it and someone in the notes will be like "omg why do you hate gay people huh why don't you want gay people to have sex why do you want to erase our sexuality" just say you hate asexuals and move on, jesus fucking christ
#ace#asexual#acespec#''we want more ace rep'' doesn't fucking translate to ''there shouldn't be sex in movies at all''#we're not trying to ''sanitize'' queer media for crying out loud

Very tired of the shadowy/darkness-themed brooding male love interests in fantasy romance books. Especially the ones where the character revolves heavily around sex / sexualization.
This is especially irritating when they are 'healed' or complete as people because they are dating the protag. Seriously. It just promotes that toxic 'You can fix him with love' concept. This is such an inherently harmful message.
Not saying those kind of broody characters shouldn't be allowed to exist at all. However, the dominance of that character type over other portrayals in romance especially, subscribes to the common notion of masculinity having only one desirable form.
The main lead does not have to be the most powerful, the most virile, most tragic or most intimidating.
It's shallow and overdone.
Why can't the men and boys in these leads also be written as thoughtful and warm, sunlight characters. Soft hands and gentle voices. Complex and spirited and vibrant. Let them also be kind, lovely and full of quiet things.
I have so many thoughts on this general topic that go into way too many directions to summarize in one post.
#is this prompted by my fondness of peeta mellark maybe#anti sjm#anti rhysand#anti ic#anti acotar#men in media#fantasy romance#masculinity in literature#lucien vanserra#and the point is why are they often not the main love interests but just a side character when they are not that typical format#twilight too#we should not perpetuate the idea of men being fixed by love and sex#this literally connects to the victim blaming mindset#you should have given him a chance bullshit
