Life Series but the operator (slenderman) is after them. Ok lets take some of the current teams so its easier to discuss I think Joel's first to go insane and start killing people. He can't handle the headaches and waking up in new places each morning without knowing where the fuck he was. He panics about everyt little odd noise and he can't handle the migranes and the tinnitus in his ear that keeps getting louder whenever the operator is near. He films absolutely everything, Gem is fine to begin with but will become paranoid alongside him. Just not to the same level. She definitely experiences memory loss. No clue who she spoke to before or what happened the night prior.
BigB is withdrawn. He's definitely under some influence. He's naturally suspicious of everything and everyone but it also means he isolates himself more than necessary. Everyone thinks he's working for the Operator but his mind simply too confused to know whats happening, he sees green maybe a bit too often. He can be seen filming people in secret. And when he's spotted he runs. Pearl sees him watching her so often she feels a bit calm when wandering around, she doesnt know if hes a danger to her but yet but at least she never feels alone.
Jimmy, Scar and Lizzie stick together. They're too stupidly curious about it so they attempt to get closer to it, try to get to the bottom of what the fuck is going on. Joel curses them out when he sees them. Tells them they will only make it worse, only bring it out more. They don't take him seriously. But Jimmy starts to experience severe paranoia after he thinks he was kidnapped at night and taken somewhere for a few hours. He woke up with his head bleeding and body covered in bruises. Scar doesn't know what to believe, Lizzie tries to convince him maybe he just sleepwalked. They aren't sure if Lizzie is somehow involved in it. She's not in denial about it existing for one. She might be coping over the fact that her husband no longer trusts her so she wants to avoid the topic of the effects this can have on people...
i think Tango might be the first one to go missing. He wasn't careful enough, he joked around with it, didn't watch his step. Didn't take it seriously. And now he's gone. Scar needs to go look for him. That's his friend, he can't just leave his friend out there. Jim and Lizzie discourage him for different reasons but Scar doesn't listen, why would he??? Pearl is also looking for Tango, so is Grian. Meanwhile Pearl has abandoned Scott because he tried to blame it reemerging and showing up again on her. Told her tjat if she goes to search for Tango she would doom them all. ....
I will come back i just need to cook this wait. enjoy i guess

Ok, I just saw Sonic 3, and I'm gonna talk about it under a Keep Reading, so spoilers ahead on the movie and my thoughts
I'm still a little insane off the adrenaline, so my thoughts may change later, but this is what I think fresh off the experience.
It was REALLY GOOD, but I'm not going to lie to myself and say that it was incredible and met all the criteria. I'm gonna get the negative-ish out of the way first, then I'll rave, okay? Okay. Gerald Robotnik also played by Jim Carrey basically fell into the trap I was worried about, in that he was kind of just another Eggman in a slightly different coat of paint. The two Robotniks are very different flavors of insane at the point in which we meet them in SA2, so, while I hoped Jim Carrey may prove he has some range as a Robotnik, I was a bit let down, but not entirely surprised. He wasn't BAD, per se, but he sort of shone a spotlight on how I'm not the hugest Jim Carrey Eggman fan anyways. That's my opinion, of course; I know some people really like Jim Carrey as Eggman, and again, he's not bad.
Also, I know we as fans were told that Shadow and Maria's story would play a big part in the movie, but...I have to say, that's the real sticking point for me with this movie, especially with Shadow Generations to compare it to. Did anyone notice that Maria's influence on Shadow was really muted? It was there, and he clearly cared about her a lot, and I did like how they showed Shadow was alienated from the scientists and had doubts about his potentially being a monster. But Maria wasn't portrayed as sick, she didn't show any love for the Earth (probably because they changed the story and location of the lab, cuz that wasn't the ARK), and so she didn't really influence Shadow's taking care of the Earth after she was gone. Which sort of made her loss...pretty generic, in all honesty. Like, I know Maria was fridged in the canon material, but the movie actually made her feel MORE fridged in not giving her as much of a voice for Shadow to be influenced by and for Gerald to twist around and ignore.
Anyways, I think that's the negatives out of the way; let's get more positive now, shall we?
Compared to the previous movies, the dumb silly moments were actually weirdly enjoyable despite the cringe. Like, during the Eggmen's laser light show dance, I said, out loud, "I hate that I kind of like this," lol.
I was actually kind of surprised at how they subverted some of my/our expectations on how Sonic and Shadow interacted, especially near and at the end of the movie. To make Shadow be the one to Sort Of talk Sonic down, and then Sonic talk Shadow down, and then have Sonic be the one to lose his Super form and plummet to Earth, while still having Shadow "die" in the end...lots of twists and turns there! I did like their little quiet moment on the moon, admittedly. I knew it would probably happen, cuz Shadow needed to switch sides, and Sonic was gonna be the one to do it with the absence of the girls, but it was still nice.
The "Talk about a low budget flight" moment TOOK ME THE FUCK OUT??? Like, I did not expect them to go full reference at that moment, but OF COURSE SONIC WOULD SAY THAT THERE.
ALSO, I EXPECTED AN ORCHESTRAL REMASTER OF LIVE AND LEARN, BUT I DID NOT EXPECT THE ORIGINAL CRUSH 40 MIX TO PLAY AT FIRST, LIKE HOLY SHIT???? LMAO THAT WAS KIND OF AWESOME.
Anyways...now let's talk about the part where I actually screamed...which was, of course, the mid credits scene. Here's a play-by-play of how I reacted: "Oh shit, Metal Sonic! ...Hmmm...I'm a little disappointed, not gonna lie, since that's technically another "guy" character, and I was hoping for at least Amy...wait...wait a minute, weren't Amy and Metal Sonic introduced in the same game? wAIT-" *Amy appears, busting up the Metals with her Piko Piko Hammer* "YES!!!" But yeah, like, holy shit, fears of it being a trilogy averted! Also, since the end-credits scene confirmed Shadow didn't die, and is in a different locale than everyone else...and Amy Rose is introduced next movie...that means there's a VERY real possibility that Rouge is coming along too!!! YAY!!! Anyways, I rate the movie an 8/10 as a Sonic fan (different rating if it was for being a movie). Better than the previous two, which were a 6/10 and a 7/10 respectively. Not exactly what we all hoped for out of a Shadow story, but not bad in any ways, just sort of diluted compared to the source material.

Brothers Jack and Quinn Hughes, two of hockey’s top prospects, take the ice at U.S. junior showcase
Aug 1, 2018

The Hughes brothers used to play mini-stick hockey in their basement, pretending they were on the same NHL team.
Now that dream is edging closer to reality, with two of the brothers among hockey’s fastest rising stars.
Eighteen-year-old Quinn was taken seventh overall by the Vancouver Canucks at this year’s draft and 17-year-old Jack is an early favourite to be next year’s top pick.
Their younger brother, 14-year-old Luke, played major bantam AAA in Detroit last year.
Whether the Hughes siblings will ever get to play on the same NHL team remains to be seen, but the day when Quinn and Jack play in the same league appears to be just around the corner.
“(Playing together) is something all brothers dream of and that’d be pretty fun,” said Quinn.
This week, Quinn and Jack are on the ice together in Kamloops, B.C., where they’re playing for the U.S. in the world junior showcase.
“Any time you get to be on the ice with a kid like Quinn, whether he’s my brother or not, you’d be excited to play with him because he’s so good,” Jack said.
It’s the first time they’ve really had an opportunity to play organized hockey together.
Jack fed a pass to Quinn for the winner with 2:25 left as a U.S. split-squad team beat a Canada split-squad team 7-5 on Tuesday night.
“It’s definitely a cool experience,” Quinn said.
On the ice, the young men have obvious chemistry, talent and passion for the game, said Mike Hastings, head coach of the U.S. junior team.
“They don’t have a lot of fear in their game. They don’t mind giving it up and getting it back,” he said. “They’re good hockey players.”
The fact that they excel at the game isn’t a huge surprise, considering their family’s hockey roots.
Their mom, Ellen Weinberg-Hughes, played hockey, soccer and lacrosse at the University of New Hampshire, and suited up for the U.S. women’s hockey team.
Their dad, Jim Hughes, played for Providence College, then worked in coaching and player development with the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs.
When Quinn was a baby, the family lived in Orlando and Ellen often worked out of town. Jim would often take Quinn to the rink, where various players would watch over him, Ellen said.
All three of the boys grew up in hockey rinks, Jim added.
“They took a liking to it from an early age. It just happened naturally, organically,” he said. “And I suppose somewhere along the way, they fell in love with the sport.”
Ellen and Jim tried hard to expose their boys to other sports, too, and let them pick what they loved, making sure that they were always having fun, and being good people and teammates.
“The things we stressed were find something you’re passionate about and whatever you’re going to do, be the best that you can be,” Ellen said.
It just happened that what they loved was hockey, she added.
Jack said his parents are “tremendous athletes and tremendous hockey minds.”
“Both of them taught me so much,” he said.
Quinn remembers his mom driving him to games and giving him tips on getting better.
“A lot of times, she would be the one telling me, ‘Maybe on this play, do that.’ So obviously I respect her opinion. She knows the game,” he said. “It’s always nice to have two parents who know what they’re talking about.”
Growing up in a hockey family with a talented player as an older brother has been great, Jack said.
“I love watching (Quinn) play and he’s been a really good influence on me growing up,” he said.
The middle child admitted, though, that the desire to beat his siblings is strong, whether they’re skating on an outdoor rink, playing mini sticks in the basement or shooting hoops in the driveway.
“Whatever you do it’s competitive with three boys in the house. It’s a really good childhood,” Jack said with a laugh.
For Quinn, being the oldest doesn’t always mean leading on the ice.
“Even though I’m the older brother, (Jack) pushes me too. And I respect his opinion and everything like that. He has a very smart hockey mind, so it would be dumb of me not to listen to him,” Quinn said.
Jack showed off that hockey mind in his first game at the showcase in Kamloops this week, saucering the puck to himself amid a cluster of Finnish players.
It was a gutsy move for the five-foot-10, 166-pound centre, but Jack said that’s just the way he plays.
“I’m a confident player. I trust myself, I think. I mean, high-skilled plays, I’ve been doing it since I was six or seven,” he said.
The teen’s ability to make those plays, combined with his stunning acceleration, has many guessing he’ll be the No. 1 pick at the NHL draft next year.
Jack doesn’t see those projections as adding any sort of pressure as he heads into another season with the U.S. National Development Team.
“I’m not too worried about where I’m going to go. I’m kind of just worried about my game and how I’m playing,” he said.
Quinn, too, is looking at improving his game.
The five-foot-10, 174-pound defenceman went to the Canucks’ development camp in July, but recently decided to return to the University of Michigan this fall.
It was a tough call, he said.
“Do I think I could have played this year? Absolutely,” Quinn said. “But I want to step in when I can really make a difference and help the Canucks win hockey games.”
Last year he had five goals and 29 points in 37 games with Michigan. The team was knocked out of the NCAA championship semifinals by Notre Dame and Quinn has said he believes they have a chance to win it all this season.
Heading back to Michigan will allow him to focus on getting stronger and developing as a player, Quinn said, adding that he sees “no reason why” his play wouldn’t improve five to 10 per cent.
Still, the top Canucks prospect is likely to return to Vancouver this winter, when the city co-hosts the world junior hockey championship with Victoria.
Quinn said he’s looking forward to playing in front of B.C. fans, both with the junior national team and the Canucks.
“I’m excited to get to Vancouver when the time comes and kind of show everyone what I can do,” he said. “But for right now, I’m just focused on USA Hockey and trying to build this group here.”
Jim Hughes said he’s always emphasized the importance of staying in the moment to his sons.
The family doesn’t pay much attention to the hype surrounding the young men, he said. Instead, they focus on continuing to get better at what they love.
“Up to this point, they just need to keep their feet on the ground, keep loving the sport and keep working,” he said.

MOVIES I WATCHED THIS WEEK # 219:
MY LAST 5 (+1) FROM DON HERTZFELDT:
🍿 ME (2024) is his latest work, an emotional wordless musical - about... Who can tell? Love, family? Longing? Eternity? Humanity? Death? 9/10.
🍿 THE MEANING OF LIFE (2005), the cacophony of jokes and music that stick people make in the course of one billion years. 8/10.
🍿 ON MEMORY (2021), a short visual essay that opens with a story about two sisters, one of whom was kissed by Elvis Presley. 9/10.
(I love some logos of film production companies. It's good to know that he was the one who designed the logo for Jennifer Lawrence's Excellent Cadaver film production company.)
🍿 “But I’m not wearin’ any pants!” THE ANIMATION SHOW (2003), the teasers he made for the platform he tried to build together with Mike Judge.
🍿 "Dehydrated Human Corpse... 142 year old..."
WORLD OF TOMORROW EPISODE THREE: THE ABSENT DESTINATION OF DAVID PRIME (2020), the very last film by Don Hertzfeldt I haven't see up to now.
The sad "romance" between Emily Prime and David from the first episode continues here as poor Baby David goes on inter-galactic adventures of cloning and time travel. It's the longest of the three parts, and its role is to continue building the technical mythologies of the two. The baby voices are still the strongest attraction for me, and this trilogy is still my most (and only) favorite Science-Fiction movie. And of course, as convoluted the actual "plot" is, the meeting at the museum between the two happens at the 18:00 time stamp, the exact midpoint of this amazing movie. You know it's coming because of the simple piano that accompanies this scene. “Perhaps there is still hope somewhere in the ocean of time for David and Emily”. 10/10.
The best appreciation piece of 'World of Tomorrow' is by David Ehrlich, the series No. 2 biggest fan.
🍿 "This is me and mommy... This is me and mommy walking.. This is me and mommy walking.. Oh. A rainbow!..."
And so, WORLD OF TOMORROW .... Another re-watch ♻️
🍿
A MESSAGE OF LOVE, The story of Jakob Holdt (2022) is an interview done at the Louisiana Museum. (Video Above).
Long haired hippy Jakob Holdt hitchhiked in the US for 5 years in the early 70's, documenting the lives of the most marginalized people, as well as some of the most affluent. His "adventures" resulted in an output of 15,000 harrowing photographs, which he later published as the book "American Pictures".
'American Pictures' had a big impact on my own life. It was one of the main influences that prompted me too to leave Denmark for the US in 1984, and travel cross-country the first few years.
🍿
Another story about a son of a Danish priest: Dreyer's classic drama DAY OF WRATH. A cold tale of witchcraft and superstition, based on a true Norwegian event from the 16th century. Slow and stern, and a very religious message film about the place of compliance and women in society. 💯 score on Rotten Tomatoes. First watch.
🍿
"I know what you are thinking. I forbid you to think that."
The countries in South America still struggle with scars that never healed of the worst crimes against humanity committed against its people. Some old people still alive today are the ones who carried them out.
THE WEEPING WOMAN ("LA LLORONA"), my first film from Guatemala, tells about one such guy. (It is based on a real person, one Efraín Ríos Montt). A very old, former dictator is convicted of genocide against the indigenous people, but the verdict is then overturned by the high court. Protesters siege the compound where he lives with his elderly wife, daughter, and granddaughter, seeking justice. The family is trapped at the large mansion, haunted by the traumas inflicted by the general.
This quiet movie has so much potential to stir outrage and emotions, and could be so much better. It uses black magic and supernatural horror tropes to supplement the political pain felt by everybody. The trailer. 5/10.
🍿
JIM HENSON X 4:
🍿 "It's not easy being green..."
JIM HENSON IDEA MAN, Ron Howard's best film. A terrific, happy documentary about the pioneer puppeteer, about whom I knew nearly nothing. The way all the people who knew him described him, reminded me of Bill Brasky (but in a good way). For once all these memories worked. He seemed like a unique individual for sure. 💯 score on Rotten Tomatoes. 9/10.
🍿 Frank Oz got 5 of the original members of the group into an hour long conversation in 2017, for MUPPET GUYS TALKING. A terrific, intimate, happy walk down memory lane, where they all share fun they had together. 9/10. Another one with 💯 score on Rotten Tomatoes.
🍿 Re-watch ♻️: TIMEPIECE, Henson's first Oscar nominated short from 1965. A jazzy experiment, filled with exploding rhythm. Seven minutes from an hospital bed to a sexy striptease show. "Help!"
🍿 His 1969 THE WIZARD OF ID, an unsold pilot for a TV-series based on Johnny Hart's comic strip BC.
Bonus: Kermit and the group 'Choir! Choir! Choir!' sing their version of RAINBOW CONNECTION (2023), which is now turning into an official anthem of the whole Muppet Universe.
Extra: Ron Howard's least interesting work, PRESIDENTIAL REUNION (2010), a retread 'Funny or Die' short with 7 of the least-funniest SNL members who impersonated POTUS, all in one unoriginal skit. It's especially painful to watch in 2025.
🍿
Like most all of Werner Herzog's projects, FAMILY ROMANCE, LLC is an unusual and thought-provoking piece of narrative movie-making. 4 years before Wim Wenders' 'Perfect Days', it's a Japanese movie, made in Japanese by a foreign German director. In a documentary-style drama made with not-professional actors, it tells of a guy who provides an odd "Rent-a-Stranger" service, offering himself as a surrogate husband, friend or a scapegoat for people who need it.
The main plot is about his awkward relationship as a pretend father to a shy 12-yo girl, who never knew her real dad. It's absorbing, unexpected and eventually heart-breaking, and it blurs the line between fantasy and reality.
Notes: 1. (There are so many beautiful, green spaces in Tokyo!). 2. Such a magnificent, delicate soundtrack. 3. Colorful Robot Fish at the Robot Hotel! The trailer.
🍿
BRYAN FORBES X 2:
🍿 THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN, my 6th thrilling film by Basil Dearden. A dashing "Assembling a team" caper comedy in the mold of British Ocean 9. A bit silly, outdated premise of what it takes to rob a bank, as well as ridiculous upper-lip military manners, but with a suspenseful execution of the heist climax itself. Sadly, this being 1960, the crime must not pay, so they tacked on an ending scene where everything they worked on is being reversed.
A lovely early cameo for flaming gay Oliver Reed. The screenplay was written by Bryan Forbes, who also co-starred in the film as the good-looking Porthill. The YouTube copy is as crisp as a new £100 note.
🍿 My first suspense film directed by Bryan Forbes, SEANCE ON A WET AFTERNOON (1964), an unusual, disturbing psychological thriller. Troubled, domineering spiritualist Kim Stanley and her henpecked husband Richard Attenborough kidnap a girl, so that the clairvoyant wife can "find" her later. Wonderful John Barry score and terrific atmospheric cinematography. Great acting all around, also by the great Patrick Magee at the end. 7/10.
🍿
WHEN THE WIND BLOWS (1986) is a deceptively lovely animated movie about an aging English couple putzing around in their isolated country cottage as they prepare themselves for a nuclear attack. Like other famous post-apocalyptic stories about nuclear winter from that period, [Luke Rhinehart's 'Long Voyage Back', 'Threads', 'The war game', 'The day after'] it offers an unforgiving and bleak prospect for the old couple. As they breezily go on with their mundane daily life while getting sicker and sicker from the radiation, they keep a stiff upper lip and cheery optimism about their prospects. But of course - like the situation right now - it's not going to end well.
David Bowie and Roger Waters did the score.
🍿
5 RE-WATCHES:
🍿 On the same day last week when drumpf took a smelly shit on a copy of the American constitution again, I re-watched DAVE (1993) for the Nth time. This is becoming one of my political feel-good guilty pleasures. A shot of nostalgia to 30 years ago when the worst that a prick president like Bill Mitchell could do is shut down a homeless shelter and cheat on his lovely wife.
I haven't seen his 'Cannibal Girls', but 'Dave' is easily my favorite Ivan Reitman movie. It's also my favorite Laura Linney and Sigourney Weaver roles, my favorite Ving Rhames role (even more than Marcellus Wallace), my favorite bad guy Frank Langella (even more than Lolita's Clare Quilty) and my second favorite Charles Grodin role (After 'Midnight Run'). And such a lovely score! 9/10. ♻️
🍿 Another re-watch of LET'S GET LOST (1988), the jazzy biography of Chet Baker, my favorite smokey balladeer, ultimate James Dean Babe-Magnet, the original "Thin White Duke". Tortured and seductive. It pits footage of his beautiful young self against the impressionistic time just before his death. ♻️.
🍿 "I don't know what they have to say - It makes no difference anyway - Whatever it is, I'm against it! No matter what it is or who commenced it, I'm against it"
HORSE FEATHERS, an early pre-Code Marx Brothers comedy. A flimsy excuse for a plot about collage football, full of anarchistic, zany, insane insults by Groucho and Bros ♻️.
Also - First watch: I'LL SAY SHE IS, the opening scene from their 1924 Broadway show, which was filmed with sound in 1931! They all give terrible impressions of a Maurice Chevalier's song. They repeated this number in 'Monkey Business'.
🍿 I forgot that Léa Seydoux was the new, young love interest in MIDNIGHT IN PARIS!
Even with the extreme color correction, the intro scene, with Sidney Bechet playing 'Si tu vous ma mere', is one that I've watched on loop way too many times to admit. But the moment that self-inserted Owen Wilson opens his giant mouth and starts not listening to his fiance, the fan-fiction cringe starts and the magic disappears.
The opening 10/10.
Owen Wilson/Gil Pender 1/10.
The movie as a whole 3/10. ♻️
🍿 I'm actually looking forward to next week to binge-watch Season 2 of SEVERANCE. I recommended it to a friend last night, and so I re-watched the pilot again (again). ♻️
🍿
I've wanted to see the absurdist Tom Stoppard play ROSENCRANZ & GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD for decades, but sadly could keep up with it, once I actually sat down to watch it. I loved 'Waiting for Godot', but this hi-brow Meta-Hamlet parable couldn't keep me awake. ⬇️Could Not Finish⬇️
🍿
AMERICAN BOY: A PROFILE OF STEVEN PRINCE is an hour-long documentary that Martin Scorsese shot in between 'The Last Waltz' and 'Raging Bull'. In some dingy living room in LA he interviews an ex-addict friend of his [The guy had played Andy the gun salesman in 'Taxi Driver'] because supposedly that guy has these great stories to tell. But the guy was no raconteur, his stories were boring, and his delivery was worst. 1/10.
The only memorable moment here is how he once injected adrenaline into the heart of a girl who overdosed on heroin - which Tarantino later re-enacted in 'Pulp Fiction' with Mia Wallace and "Lance".
🍿
SOVIET ANIMATOR FYODOR KHITRUK X 2:
🍿 WINNIE-THE-POOH (Or "Vinni-Pukh" as it is pronounced) was a Russian adaptation of the first chapter of the book, where "Pukh" is searching for honey, and which had nothing to do with the Disney version. (1969) Some guy on Letterboxd wrote: "Made the grave mistake of introducing this to my 3-year-old niece and she has requested we watch this masterpiece fucking endlessly. Send help."
🍿 A YOUNG MAN NAMED ENGELS (1970) is a light, different type of a propaganda piece. Between the ages of 18-22, young Friedrich studied in Bremen and Berlin, and from there he wrote letters to his sister and friends back home, to which he added doodles he drew. The animators used these doodles to create a cute & whimsical portrait of the wealthy man who discovers the suffering world around him. It ends with the first monumental letter he send to Karl Marx in 1844. 7/10 - Recommended.
🍿
I don't know what I expected from Bong Joon Ho's new sci-fi fantasy MICKEY 17, and whatever it was, I soldiered on until the very end. However, of the 300+ movies I've seen so far this year, this was probably the worst one. Even Mike Yanagita couldn't save it. 1/10.
🍿
2 MORE FROM CANADIAN ALISON SNOWDEN AND DAVID FINE:
🍿 BOB'S BIRTHDAY, their 1994 Oscar winner, is my second film by them (After 'Animal Behaviour'). Surprise 40 Birthday party that goes wrong.
🍿 GEORGE AND ROSEMARY, another NFB of Canada that was nominated for an Oscar in 1987. A shy old person falls for an old lady across the street. 8/10.
🍿
2 from Elizabeth Whitmere, another Canadian filmmaker: COLD (2023) is a feminist body horror short, about a 40 yo woman whose body and life can't warm up.
Also, UP TO HERE (2021), another woman desperate for alone time, escapes into a retreat in her mind. [*Female Director*]
🍿
THE SHORTS:
🍿 THE OLYMPIC GAMES OF 1900, a fascinating series of motion-studies of male athletes, competing with tiny thongs, or in the nude, like the original Greek intended. Very low-key with few spectators around.
🍿 "Our story opens on a dark and stormy night..."
WHO KILLED WHO?, a masterful 1943 Ted Avery surrealistic murder parody. "I dood it."
Also, his RED HOT RIDING HOOD, a semi-adult version of the children's fairy tale. With a horny old grandma, lecherous horny wolf and a Marilyn Monroe pin up girl working in a strip club. 9/10.
🍿 DI CAVALCANTI (1977), my first film by Avant-garde Brazilian director Glauber Rocha. It recorded the wake and funeral of his friend, the famous modernist painter Emiliano Di Cavalcanti, and was controversial because of its eccentric, in-you-face brashness.
🍿 COPYSHOP (2001), a nightmarish wordless art film from Austrian Virgil Wildrich. The owner of a copy shop, who makes endless multiplications of himself.
🍿 Cyriak's mini-short 2014 MALFUNCTION, a trippy 1960's nighrmare that involved weird dogs in a supermarket. 9/10.
🍿 THE BOYFRIEND GAME (2015), two Australian teenagers play an imaginary game, each inventing a future lover, but Thomasin McKenzie wants the pretend boyfriend that her friend conjured. [*Female Director*]
🍿 In BATTLE AT BIG ROCK (2019) André Holland's family is camping in their RV, when a herd of dinosaurs attack them. Of the franchise, I've only seen the original 'Jurassic Park', so I wish I didn't see this one.
🍿 BETYE SAAR: TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS (2020) is a terrific, too-short portrait of the youngish 93-yo African-American artist I never heard of. 9/10. [*Female Director*]
🍿 MARGIE SOUDEK'S SALT AND PEPPER SHAKERS is a New Yorker short about a grandma with an obsession - and explosions! [*Female Director*]
🍿 BLACK MIRROR is back with season 7! Let's recap: The series had 7 great episodes and 21 mediocre ones. Every season after Season 3 was worse then the previous ones, and the 5 episodes of Season 6 were so completely forgettable, that I had to go to Wikipedia in order to recall them. Based on this trailer, Season 7 looks like it will be even more unwatchable, the usual Netflix chum.

Interviews 2024
Sometimes, I talk to musicians! This year, I had conversations with some great ones — Linda Thompson, Bob Holmes (Suss, numun, etc), somesurprises, Danny Paul Grody, James Elkington & Nathan Salsburg, Zachary Cale, and Crazy Horse's Billy freakin' Talbot. I always wish I was a little bit better at the art of conversation, but hopefully, these chats are entertaining/interesting enough.
You can decide for yourself over on Aquarium Drunkard — which as mentioned many times before, has gone behind the paywall this year. But as also mentioned many times before, your membership fee is worth it ... think of it as subscribing to many e-newsletters/substacks all at once? Beyond my own Q&As, there have been a ton of sweet talks this year, from Jeff Parker to Thurston Moore to Rosali to J Spaceman to The Necks to Guy Picciotto to Pat Metheny to Jessica Pratt and many many more. (And that's not even counting Jason P. Woodbury's always awesome Transmissions podcast). Sign up!
Linda Thompson
I just liked that kind of sad, keening music. I think keening is the word, you know? Most people hate [that kind of music]. I mean, most people hate the bagpipes. I love the bagpipes, so there’s obviously something very wrong with me. [Laughs]
Bob Holmes
The vibe is a big part of it—that big sky, open feeling, creating a musical experience that that is very open. The word inclusive shows up a lot. Inclusive of musical genres, yeah, but also men, women, transgender, different races. I always say that the thing about ambient country is that it’s a big country. There’s plenty of space.
somesurprises
For me, it’s about trying to be someone who’s open to change — whether that’s personally, politically or globally. That’s the most centered reality. Cynicism and just believing that things have to be done the way they’ve been done in the past, or that someone else has to get the short end of the stick for them to benefit — those are actually twisted versions of reality.
Danny Paul Grody
I changed so fundamentally when I became a parent. It impacts everything, every aspect of my life. You know, it was one of the greatest gifts I could ask for, just to take my focus off of myself. I didn’t realize what a gift it would be, but it’s taught me a lot. But it’s also taught me how to really cherish those things in my life that matter, that bring meaning, that bring me a sense of wholeness. Music is one of those things, obviously.
James Elkington & Nathan Salsburg
I find that as I’ve made more records and written more songs, I’ve become a much more sympathetic listener. My tastes have only broadened as I’ve gotten older. My early records — both with Jim and without — were reflections of more limited influences, or the desire to only have certain influences present. That’s definitely changed. In some ways, we don’t have anything to prove to anyone anymore.
Zachary Cale
I got to hang out with Michael Chapman a few times and I asked him about that point blank. “Is that one of the reasons why you do it – to mark the span of time?” He said absolutely. I mean, it’s the art of it, too, but these records are how I mark my time. I’ve always been old fashioned that way. I think most musicians who are in it for the long haul think of it that way, too.
Billy Talbot
It’s fate. And I don’t even really believe in fate. We probably make our own fate, as we move along in this life. There seems to be some kind of other plan for us that we latched onto. But I’m not sure about that. All I know is that it happened. And I’m grateful. Grateful to have been a part of it.

Canon Characters in the Mermaid Siblings AU
Figured I should add this lol
Sarah Hawkins
Works as a waitress at a local restaurant called Seaside Treasures. Around the summer/tourist season the place is packed with people visiting on vacation. She earns enough to be able to afford a small house by the sea as customers leave a lot of tips for her. Whenever there’s an issue, she resolves it in a kindly manner that makes the customer feel like a total jerk for being so rude. She often works long hours and feels awful about it, wanting to be around for her son. She knows that Jim’s half merfolk but doesn’t say anything in fear of what might happen to her son. When she comes across Emma, she has a feeling that she knows her somehow…
John Silver
He’s more human in this AU but he’s still got prosthetic limbs. This time it’s due to a boating accident as he used to work with some fishermen, often catching merfolk for the black market. One day the boat crashed against a rocky shore chasing a mermaid and he suffered a lot. It was a wake up call for him to get out and he did. He still cares the guilt of what he did and is trying to make amends for those wrongs. After getting the new arm and leg, he settled down in Benbow and works as a chef at Seaside Treasures. He becomes a father figure to the siblings
Delbert Doppler
He’s more human in the AU. He’s a history teacher at Jim’s school. He knows of legends of merfolk, the variety that’s said to make home in the seas. He has a period where he teaches these stories and how mankind has been influenced by these tales in modern society. He also knows they’re real but keeps it secret, not wanting anyone to be in danger. He’s a target for Ossian to get information on merfolk, as the man frequents the sea with his wife.
Amelia Smollet/Doppler
A merrow who turned human to explore the world above the waves. All merfolk live by a rule to not get caught, and Amelia went through lengths to hide her true identity. After a while, she meets Delbert and they fall for each other after years of friendship. She knows the consequences of getting into a relationship with a human and decides to go for it. She had to reveal herself in front of him, and after some time taking it in, he accepts her for her. Merrow’s have a special cap, called a Cohuleen Druith, that allows them to return to the sea, and she trusts Delbert to keep it safe. Once in a while, when they’re sure nobody is around the two go to the beach and swim in the sea so she can stretch her scales.
Morph
A small octopus that the siblings encountered during one of their adventures. They rescue him from a moray eel, and he sticks by their side whenever they venture into sea. He’s usually pink around them but changes colors whenever he sees the shadow of a boat. He’s befriended many merfolk before but sadly hunters had taken many of them. He’s protective over the siblings, not wanting to lose another friend
B.E.N
A waiter at Sarah’s job. He’s friendly with people but tends to ramble with conversation instead of doing his job. Knows Jim and often hands him snacks whenever he comes by to study. Knows nothing about if merfolks exist but wouldn’t put it past to think they’re real. He believes there’s a Megalodon in the ocean, the Loch Ness monster is real, and other cryptics and myths. He knows a lot about legends and stuff but tends to forget it if he’s rambling on about something else

I wasn't gonna do a reaction post this week for reasons that will probably become obvious but then I was annoyed at myself for not doing one yesterday, because I would have felt like SUCH a smartie pants for predicting that Ed was gonna fish up one of the bottles, and now I just have to hope that you will believe me that I did predict that in the privacy of my own mind (though I owe it all to that one post from weeks ago that was like "what if a fisherman found the bottles" so I can't really take credit but ANYWAY). But yeah thoughts below cut
This got kind of absurdly long whoops. Also I am inevitably going to say stuff that people disagree with but man I am begging you to be gentle with me. I am just trying to work through some of my feelings about the show and other people are going to have different feelings and that is FINE and nobody is under attack here and there is room for different opinions peace and love
Quick disclaimer: I haven't been reading a ton of meta or diving into the tag or anything, so if I say something wildly off about the fandom response at any point, it's based on vibes from what's been on my dash and I may have got the wrong end of the stick there.
I'll go ep by ep for the most part but this point applies to both eps, so I'll dive in first: I seem to be in a minority within the more active parts of the fandom in that I truly do not have strong feelings about Izzy one way or the other. I do personally feel that his characterisation in season two is not consistent with that in season one, HOWEVER 1) I have not expended a ton of mental energy on doing a deep dive into his s1 characterisation, so I'm willing to believe I've missed stuff [not actually convinced of this but don't care enough to put my foot down about it] and 2) it simply does not bother me. I consider Izzy to be a secondary character that they've decided to somewhat retool in between seasons, and I am basically fine with it. You know who else is different this season? Jim! It seems pretty obvious to me that the development of BOTH these characters is due to the influence of the actors, and honestly, that happens in TV. I DO understand people's frustration that a character who espoused views and behaviours that were fundamentally at odds with the whole moral premise of the show has been rehabilitated so easily, buuuut... I don't personally want a version of this show where Izzy's rehabilitation arc is given tons of screen time, either, so I am okay with just accepting it. ALSO, this s2 version of his character--while not necessarily feeling entirely earned--is considerably more fun to me! I'm really enjoying his bitchy little one-liners and his drag act and whatever. To make a comparison, I did see some complaints early on that Oluwande's relationship with Zheng felt rushed, but to me they fully sold it with their performances: it was easy to read between the lines that there had been a growing attraction between them for a while. Point being, I think we need to be okay with allowing some of the secondary character/relationship development to be elided, because it is not necessarily a priority to have it all put on screen in front of us.
Anyway, moving on to ep 6: I don't have a huge amount to say about the bulk of this episode. For the most part I really enjoyed it. I think Ned Low is a great send-up of the monologuing villain with a lot of psychosexual baggage, and I loved the way that was resolved. I'm probably the only person in the world who didn't already know this, but I looked up Hellcat Maggie because the name rang a bell, and she was a member of the Irish-American Dead Rabbits Gang in the 1800s, which was also known as the Mulberry Boys, and their enemies were the supporters of the anti-immigration Know Nothing party. Supposedly she used to file her teeth down to points. I am not making any of this up. [Bob Dylan voice] Go home and look it up on WIKIPEDIA*
Anyway: the party planning/coconut shack date, Calypso's Birthday and the Ned Low showdown all worked great for me. Some of the stuff--Ed shoving Stede behind him and begging Ned to torture him instead--was honestly a LITTLE bit tropey for my tastes, but hey, they're classics for a reason. I kind of think it would have been interesting to see the opposite dynamic (though of course we do see Stede trying to protect Ed in his own way later in the episode): we've already seen this kind of thing from Ed back in 1x09 with the British, so a role reversal might have been a bit more interesting to me (since this season has been so much about role reversal), but like this is a very minor niggle.
I think that Stede's disposal of Ned worked narratively and wasn't inconsistent with his character (I get the vibe that some people think it was?), and I think that Ned's line about Stede being a "pet" and Ed only liking him for his "bumbling amateur status" was some really rich stuff (and a callback to the QAR crew's description of Ed and Stede's relationship back in 1x06). And of course the whole "pet" motif has been running through season two as well: Stede's callback to doggy heaven, Ed's cat bell, even Wolf the bunny. There's something really interesting there, but I don't know if there's enough time left in the season to really get to grips with it?
Moving on to the sex scene: here I seem to be a bit out of step with my own small fandom circle, because I had mixed feelings at best about this. I've seen the argument that the show was obviously framing it as being romantic, with the fireworks etc.; I guess that's what bothers me about it, because to me it was so obviously... off. To be clear, I don't think it was in any way non-consensual or anything like that, and hey, the kiss, out of context? Amazing! But IN context--Stede has JUST had his first real kill, which has been framed by the narrative and the other characters as a big deal. Also framed as a big deal: Ed asking to take things slow in ep 5. Ed comes to Stede to "talk things through", and brings up his own most significant trauma--the death of his father (right after we saw a super quick flashback to some of Stede's own dad-related trauma)--and Stede cuts him off with a forceful kiss. To me, it feels kind of obvious that their first sexual encounter is being linked with violence and childhood trauma in a way that is not, like, fun or sexy or romantic TO ME, regardless of how the rest of the scene is shot and intercut (which is not me making a moral judgment on anyone else's feelings about this scene; just stating my own emotional reaction to it). IF the show wants us to find this hot/romantic, then it didn't work for me and I found it jarring. If the show wanted us to find this kind of destabilising and compromised, then it worked for me but I feel like we deserved better!
SO. Episode 7. I'm just going to be super upfront right at the top: this episode really bummed me out and I didn't like it. Not saying I hated every minute of it or that nothing worked for me, but overall I didn't enjoy it. I saw on the official OFMD Instagram account's stories a couple of days ago some footage from one of those preview screenings they did of these episodes in a cinema or whatever. The MC was like "how about those episodes!" and I remember thinking, "wow, the audience seems kind of weirdly muted". Well now I get it! I would have been too!
I've seen people saying that Ed panicking and running off to become a fisherman is a mirror to Stede panicking and running back to his wife in 1x09, which does track, but I actually think that the symmetry here is multivalent, and there are also echoes of 1x08, which for the record is my most hated episode of season one that I can almost not bear to rewatch--not because I think the WRITING is bad but just because it is a little bit too real for me, in terms of situations I've been in where someone I care about who supposedly cares for me lets the worst person in the world treat me really badly, picks them over me and then acts like it never happened and expects me to just be fine with it? I DON'T LIKE THAT!
So yeah, listen, I always felt like Ed leaving with Jack at the end of 1x08 and then immediately coming back was kind of a double beat, or even a triple beat. We already had him threatening to leave and then changing his mind in the previous episode, and then we have STEDE leaving in the following episode, so I always felt like it sat a little bit oddly for me. I do think it's an important and enlightening episode in terms of Ed's character and in revealing some of the underlying issues in their relationship that they need to address (plus giving us yet another flavour of toxic masculinity), but I don't know, it has always bugged me a little bit even beyond the fact that it is just too personally painful for me to enjoy.
Slight detour here--I'm gonna bring it back--to say that, while I am more glad than sorry that we have had so much BTS and promo stuff for the finale, it does create a little bit of a sense of inevitability to proceedings that undercuts any dramatic tension? Like, I feel like we can fairly confidently put together the beats of at least the first act of next week's episode. Those being: Ed has left, he is in a rowboat, he realises that Stede is in trouble--under attack from the British no less!--and heroically turns back to save his true love. So--basically the end of 1x08 again.
As much as I have been enjoying the narrative symmetry thus far, it's in 2x07 that it starts to feel forced, for me. While I can totally buy that Ed starts to regret the sex for all the reasons I mentioned above (though to be clear I don't think he regrets it until later), and that he's uncomfortable with Stede getting drunk and rowdy and playing into a pirate archetype that Ed wants to leave behind (all of this ALSO mirrors/reverses Stede and Ed in 1x08 btw), the idea that he would decide to leave forever to be a fisherman? This is the same guy who spent the first three episodes of the season totally inconsolable because Stede left him, and regained the will to live because of a vision of Stede? And now he's just voluntarily leaving forever because of one conflict? I... guess this accords with Ed's previous behaviour in 1x08, but again, that's always kind of bugged me. I don't know, man, I know they need to set up the big romantic beach reunion scene, but I feel like they could have had Ed go off fishing to clear his head after an argument instead, and that would have felt a bit easier to swallow for me. Sure, not as dramatic, but more believable.
So, this brings me to something about the show that I am starting to find a little bit disappointing, which is that... I feel like it keeps undercutting moments of tenderness and queer joy! It didn't bother me so much in season one, I think just because the show was such a breath of fresh air in so many ways. But now, having committed to being the queer pirate show and playing into that in the marketing and kind of rebranding the whole identity of the show as being a queer love story (which is always WAS but wasn't initially marketed as), I kind of feel like there's a promise inherent in that. And yet again and again I feel like we're getting the rug pulled out from under us. Like--Stede's beautiful love confession in 2x04 being immediately mocked by Anne and Mary (I know people love Anne and Mary but honestly it was getting a little too close to Calico Jack territory for me at times). Like the sex scene feeling (to me) weirdly compromised. Like Ned Low attacking the Revenge before Ed and Stede can dance together! Like Ed deciding to cut and run, AGAIN, at the slightest sign of trouble. And I know it's going to get resolved next week, and I feel like the release schedule for this season (not to mention only getting eight eps obviously) has been to its detriment. I understand why they felt like they needed to put out episode three in the first week because our guys don't even share the screen until then, but I think 2x07 MIGHT have felt a lot more palatable if it had gone out with the finale instead. I also think 2x03 and 2x04 going out together might have felt like a more natural pairing, and would have meant that I was not overwhelmed with misery after the first three eps (actually I still would have been overwhelmed with misery because of stuff in my real life but like, LESS so maybe). Although getting to savour the 2x03 end scene for a whole week was pretty great, and ditto 2x05, so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.
Anyway. 2x07 felt really off to me, primarily in the characterisation of both Ed and Izzy, but also somewhat in the showdown between Zheng and Stede. I could understand it more if I felt that s2 had done a lot of work to establish that Stede is straying towards playing into a toxically masculine pirate archetype, but I think there are really only two times (prior to this ep) where this happens: the (dream sequence) opening of 2x01 and the third act of 2x06. Otherwise, we've seen him being really good at customer service, embracing the "tender" label from Zheng and fitting in with the Red Flag girls, counselling Lucius, saving his crew after the mutiny despite his heart being broken, bonding with Izzy, serving cunt in a cursed new suit, defusing the situation with Ned (until he didn't)--basically Stede has been really GAY this season? Like I honestly felt like THAT was the way he had swung, not towards performing violence and hypermasculinity. So Zheng's dressing down, while maybe working in the context of the scene or even the whole episode, doesn't feel well-integrated into Stede's season 2 arc to me.
Look, I'm going to leave it there. I know this is long-winded and rambling and I fully lost track of time and missed the window to use my Early Bird chest on Duolingo. I doubt anyone will read this whole thing. I just needed to get some stuff off my chest I guess.
*Anyone on Dylan twitter gets this reference!! There's tons of crossover between tumblr OFMD fandom and Dylan twitter, RIGHT? Anyway it was a thing he said in the outro to 'Goodbye Jimmy Reed' at a concert the other night. It was funny because of his dramatic delivery of the word 'Wikipedia' followed by him immediately running out of momentum and mumbling "Wikipedia" again with zero confidence. It was some nice late-career Dylan stage banter. I went to see him around this time last year and man this R&RW tour is great, even though I saw it in a pretty bad venue. The best time I ever saw Dylan was at the Brixton Academy, he played the intro to 'London Calling', it was electric. The first time I saw him was at the NEC arena in Birmingham and it was kind of a letdown but I have fond memories of it anyway, I went with my dad. I was talking to this bartender the other week about seeing your heroes live and honestly it made me realise that I haven't been to any live music in way too long! I'm happy to say that I got to see Bobby Womack perform live right before he died--actually technically I didn't SEE him, you see I was volunteering at Latitude and the bar was perpendicular to the stage. However I COULD hear him. One time I saw Nick Cave live and a woman standing behind me fainted on me! It was pretty stressful but I'm still glad I can say I saw Nick Cave live you know what I mean? The dream would be to see David Byrne but I doubt I could afford it... maybe it'll happen who knows

I thought that the time travel part of the story would be something like a person from the present going back to the 60s to try to help Phil on more personal level, to prevent him from doing regretable things and harm to himself. But this honestly sounds much more interesting! Trying to figure out how HE would handle the opportunity to time travel... It requires a great understanding of him! I agree that his first instinct would be something like "let's kill Hitler!", but such grand changes of history would probably only complicate things. He would put so much pressure on himself to try to change the world, that he would once again neglect the people around him... and then he'd try to fix it, but, like you said, some things (sexuality) cannot be changed and molded to will. Though I'd love for him to have spent more time with Meegan. I remember her saying, that whenever he came to visit her, it was like a switch. She was one of few people he genuinely loved, and you could see that spending time with her made him feel much better. She was like a medicine for him. But of course, you can't rely on your child to heal you and make your problems disappear...
About his great-man-ism, but also his love for movies: I wonder if he'd try to meet/save James Dean? Considering he wrote Jim Dean of Indiana...
And last thing, I'm really excited about seeing his ADHD and dyslexia represented!
Good luck with writing! Your takes here on tumblr are always interesting, I really can't wait to read what you come up with in this story.
God I feel so pretentious when I say this, but I feel like I was influenced by watching time loop episodes of television shows? Just in general, with my love of the time travel trope. The idea that a character is deposited somewhere (sometime) outside of their control, without any guidance, with the ultimate goal of them learning something about themselves. But they have to figure it out themselves. It's a very isolating experience that I've always been really interested in. And they normally can't even tell people because whoever they tell won't remember in the next instance of the loop. And obviously this isn't a time loop narrative, but there's still that same sense of isolation and needing to solve something. Or at least, I want there to be.
It's so funny to me cause like. So Phil wakes up in 1960 and he's like "I can save JFK. I have to save JFK." But like. Okay, spoiler alert, this isn't going to be some action story. He's not going to save JFK. I mean he can't. He's just some guy working alone, with no special skills. I mean he shot himself in the foot with a gun, I wouldn't exactly trust him to successfully shoot Lee Oswald. I think it's much more important, anyway, to figure out who he would want to save and who he would first think to save, and how he would make those decisions, and what he'd do when he realizes he can't save them. (I'm not saying I'm just gonna do history the exact same way as what really happened. Phil obviously Did have an impact, a meaningful impact, and one imagines that would only increase with foreknowledge.)
Unfortunately James Dean died in 1955, and I really want to stick within the confines of the 60s, for Aesthetic and Thematic reasons lol. But....I Do have to say, the idea of him trying to interfere or interact in some way with Elvis's downward spiral could be interesting.... (that's just a thought I had just now, don't hold me to that. Or any of this, really, but especially that).
I will do my best! I'm going to be honest, my first instinct is to focus on the bipolar aspect, because I have personal experience (literally my whole family except me. Idk how I got lucky enough for it to skip me/not affect me much). So that's what intrigues me from a narrative/deeper character perspective, but you're totally right in bringing that up and thank you for reminding me!
Haha thank you!! Thanks for sending such a long ask and I hope this one wasn't too long in return lol.

Thomas Sharpe says to the portrait of reader that he has always loved, loved and will love her. He says he will not accept her engagement to Count Harrison. She belongs to him. The next day, reader wakes up in a strange room tied to an armchair. She pretends to be asleep. Thomas is talking to her now.
Trigger Warning: obsession, yandere, kidnapping, jealousy
Word Count: 2439
Character: Thomas Sharpe/reader
Summary: Thomas never wanted anything more than to marry you. When he learns of your future marriage to the hated earl Garrison, he knows that something must be done.
POV Thomas
Thomas knew he couldn't afford to be silent. He'd been silent for too long, and now was the moment to snap. He won't let anyone steal you from him.
Sharpe had never expected to find the love of his lost life. That he could find someone he would love and who would love him. A girl who would take care of him, and he would protect her from people.
But it just so happens that Thomas was born in a place where your right to vote doesn't count. Especially with Lucille. He loved her, he really did, but she probably didn't understand that it was more a need for a person than love, because Sharpe could hardly survive alone in this huge house, which also needs to be provided for. And her obsession with him, which Thomas hated, was also very annoying and dripping on his brain. It was very unpleasant to be thought of as some kind of object, thanks to which you can fulfill your desires. And these were used by all the girls in his entourage.
Parents, as Thomas noted, for the most part also did not care about the emotional outbursts of children and their hobbies. Well, why care about it? They're just kids. They can also be raised by nannies and teachers who were hired.
And the women... All those moments, all the things that his late sister controlled, mostly related to the women he married and later received money from. And he didn't particularly like it. Why is she controlling him? Why him?
However, even in the largest darkness, you can find a small corner that is dedicated to light. And that light for Thomas was you. His sweetest, most beloved, and most incredible girlfriend. He would pick up so many epithets, metaphors, and comparisons with you, fearing that even they could not describe all your beauty.
He smiled dreamily. It was so nice to think and fantasize about how you would live together, you would caress him, and he would stroke your soft, honey-scented hair, telling you how much he loved you and cherished you. But what was the point of thinking about it if they were going to be together?
Thomas looked down and passed his gentle hand, which had no bruises or wounds, for which he in turn had once been scolded by Mr. Cushing, Edith's father, perhaps the only woman who could attract his attention a little and almost even accept that he could not marry you, but his thoughts quickly dissipated then.
***
"Have I ever loved anyone before you?" Thomas spoke in a low voice that echoed small and tiny in the walls of the dilapidated but pleasant-looking room. He turned his slow gaze to the beautiful Edith, who lay beside him on the slightly stiff bed, looking straight into his eyes, blue as clear water.
Thomas sighed. He didn't want to talk about you. His favorite girl, who helped him believe in himself. I knew Edith wouldn't like it.
"Yes, I did once -" Sharpe began again in a whisper, lightly squeezing the girl's light hand in his. He did not want to share his thoughts and feelings with others, because he knew that they would betray him. Otherwise, they will use it against you, which was very insulting.
Thomas looked at Edith again with a lost look, a girl who was different from the others and who might soon be dead. Damn it. He didn't think she was beautiful. She might be pretty, but there was nothing remarkable about her. Well, maybe it was just the beautiful eyes and the unusual mole above the soft lips that she didn't even try to cover up. Perhaps it was the openness that drew him to her.
But no. No, no, no, no. He won't fall for that pretty face and possibly witty mind. He only loved you. Only her flower, which fortunately her sister did not know about.
***
Thomas shook his head quickly. He didn't care now. He and Edith had never been in love. A hobby? "yes, perhaps. But no more. He can't do more than that. After all, all his steely heart and soft soul belonged to you, his childhood friends.
Childhood friends. It's been so long... Memories of his past childhood flashed through his mind as if they were the wind that tries to impress a person. His most vivid memory of you and your current fate was when you came to visit them in Crimson Peak, as your parents were busy with his parents and spent time with Thomas while Lucille was doing something else.
That's probably what influenced him back then. After all, if you hadn't been there at that time. At that difficult moment, when he was, if I may say so correctly, beaten with his stick by his mother, with whom she always went, and even connected the rod after.
And Thomas didn't know why. What did he do wrong then? What's the big deal?
He sighed and touched the small framed portrait with his palm. Before the portrait of his favorite flower. His favorite girl, who probably doesn't even know what he thinks about her right now. He couldn't remember when the portrait had come to him. If an artist came to him who painted to order and he had a photo that his beloved sent him, then it was the portrait that sent his flower.
She was so beautiful in that picture. Her light, slightly curled hair fell gently over her shoulders; her lips smiled a soft smile that wished everyone well; her nose was slightly tilted up, but it did not show disgust or contempt; her beautiful, transparent eyes looked at him intently.
Suddenly, a fleeting but painful tear ran down Sharpe's cold cheek, and with a quick swipe, it fell to the carpet, then dissolved into water.
He always liked to imagine you — the most joyful and smiling princess-marrying him of your own accord. He has so often, since that very moment in childhood, imagined how he would put a ring on your fragile finger, which would symbolize your love.
"I loved you, my flower..."
It's true. His love was always there. She started the exodus as a child and never stopped.
"... I love you..."
But still an engagement. Yes, the damned engagement party you invited him to, apparently thinking Thomas would be thrilled that you were marrying the Earl of Harrison. But no, he already hated the hell out of him. This dirty man who was unworthy of you and probably only used you.
"... And I will always love you..."
He would not allow this engagement to happen. That's not why Thomas waited, waiting for you to fall in love with him. However, he is tired of waiting and hinting to you that he loves you. You belong to him.
"After all, my flower belongs to me."
The words spoken by the portraits were immediately swallowed up by the dark house, absorbing them.
***
POV You
Oh, how you loved Earl James Harrison. He was the very person who, at a difficult time for you, your family and your family situation in general, pulled you out of such a blizzard. He was the one who helped you.
James was probably the most attractive person you've ever seen. And both in terms of external parameters, and in terms of his spiritual and mental abilities. Being very well-read and intelligent, he always found moments in which you can learn something new. Yes, it's no secret, you both learned new things thanks to each other, because each had a field in which he understood.
And when he proposed to you, you couldn't help but agree, because you knew that he loved you just as much as you loved him.
If you were a writer, the kind of writer who delves into novels, describing the tumultuous lives of people, revealing all the mysterious secrets, then you would definitely describe your relationship as very fickle, unfathomable, and possibly equal. After all, he did not humiliate you, did not lower your abilities, but treated you as an equal person, which greatly impressed you.
Very handsome was your lover: dark, brown hair that was usually scattered in a careless hairstyle, brown eyes that were carefully watching what was happening and usually beautiful clothes. Beautiful clothes. Oh, you should have one.
***
"I love you so much, James," you murmured sleepily, resting your head on the man's strong shoulder and closing your eyes. You could feel him chuckle.
"I love you too, honey," he said after a few seconds. You no longer heard it, because you were in a perfect state of sleep. In a state where you can rest.
He never stopped looking at you, smiling a gentle smile
***
Suddenly, your wrists felt very uncomfortable. There was a persistent feeling that they were rubbing against something. But what could it be? It felt like a rope woven into several knots.
And the smell... The smell was also completely different from the one in James ' room, where you went to sleep. There was the smell of old books and tart milk, and here there was the smell of clay mixed with the smell of some metal. No, if Jim didn't decide to start making toys and drag you to the workshop, then fine. But there was a smell of something else, too. Something is unclear.
You opened your eyes a little, trying to see the place you were in. You couldn't have been kidnapped, could you? Or could they? And who could it be, if we follow this theory?
However, nothing surprised you. You were in a not particularly large room, which by its own condition was basically normal, only one thing did not paint it, so it was the smell and appearance of dust that lay on the shelves with old books. You flinched a little. A large bed stood beside you, strewn with a small number of rose petals, and covered with a dark corduroy coverlet. There were large windows nearby. Does the theory about your kidnapping include that if you jump out, you'll break every bone in your body? Or were you on the first floor?"
At the bottom, or rather the floor of the room, was decorated with a large dirty carpet with large drawings of incomprehensible shapes. It seems to have been a spontaneous fantasy. Although you could see the flowers there, too. Across from the bed was a large wardrobe that probably contained all of your captor's clothes.
"I've been waiting for this moment for so long!" an eerily familiar voice exclaimed. Such a soft, husky baritone. He was definitely familiar to you.
When you heard the voice, you immediately closed your eyes. I'd rather pretend to be asleep than face the man who kidnapped you." No, you'll talk to him later, but not now. Now is not the time.
Suddenly, you heard the floorboards creak beside you and someone blocked out the light that was continuously pouring out of the window in a cold stream.
"I love you so much, my flower," a voice murmured in your ear, barely audible. His heart was pounding at a furious rate now, replaying in his brain the words that the man had spoken earlier. Who is he? What is it about? Why had he waited for this moment? Why does he love you? Do you know each other at all?
"I know that you love me as much as I love you. I know you hate that damned Earl Garrison, and you want to marry me because you only love me."
What? You tried to focus on your thoughts, trying to remember what that familiar voice was. What kind of person would dare to do something as audacious as kidnapping?
"I loved you. I've loved you since the day you comforted me in this house, protected me from my parents, and showed me your concern... I never forgot about you."
All of a sudden, you feel like you've been electrocuted. Protection, comfort, care. The words echoed in your brain. You didn't listen to the man just now, because you realized who it was.
Thomas. Thomas Sharpe. Your first person to open up to. To whom she confided all her secrets. You didn't really know him as a person, only as a child, as children, you crossed paths a couple of times, and only because your parents and his parents collaborated.
And nothing else. What kind of love is he talking about? What do his thoughts know, which he seeks to convey? Why did he think it was love? Why not a less powerful feeling?
***
The clock ticked. They gave off a slight tinkle that broke the silence that had arisen in the room. Only the soft whispers of the children trying to comfort each other could be heard. They were quiet, almost inaudible.
"I'll always help you, Thomas, just call me," you muttered to yourself, turning to the boy and scratching his dark head with your thin hand. Trying to comfort him, to show him that you care.
***
But for this to happen — by kidnapping, by declaring love, and by binding — love simply could not arise. What kind of love is in a person's need for another person, you just didn't understand. What was the point? Unclear.
"I know that you have belonged to me since the day you comforted me..."
You didn't want to hear Thomas mutter about it. If you had been bolder, you would have screamed, trying to escape, but there was no way out now. It is better to obey him. Yes, the logic was wrong at the moment, since there was no need to think like that. It is better to resist than not to try to do anything.
"...I know you belong to me..."
No, you don't belong to anyone! Since when does he want you so badly? After all, as you remember, Thomas was quite a quiet, calm and peaceful boy. And what happened now? Why is he acting like this? What does he want? Love? So why would he fall in love with someone else?
"...And I know that you will belong to me..."
The only person you'll ever belong to is James, and that's only because he belongs to you. No more than that. Doesn't that include negotiated equality?
You felt someone's soft lips touch your lips, which were very thin, but pleasant. Spiced and slightly wounded, apparently bitten, Thomas's lips were not bad
"...Because we love each other, my flower..."

So, I did a little sarcastic-y review from the salt mines for RNM 3x09. Warnings for excessive sodium content, Maribel mourning, a desire to recycle cardboard, and, of course, Malex opinions. Without further ado:
- Every time Michael smiles I forget for like 5 whole seconds how much I hate that Malex keeps me shackled to this show. Too cute that he brought Alex lunch (and probably hoped he could sneak a glimpse of him) and they're going on their first date (omg omg omg).❤❤❤❤❤
- Kyle should yell at people more. Starting with his garbage friends who left him in a barn without proper triage or jello cups while he was in a coma (why didn't they just keep him at DS if he's having appointments there anyway? Nevermind... ). Alas, he's starting his understandable rage tour with Uncle Edgelord, who, naturally, makes a dramatic statement and tries to leave. I am so glad Kyle called him on that.
- Delmanes would be cute if Greg didn't have the personality of cardboard. They've created a character who is actually only here to remind us of how special and amazing Maria is. Turns out that's not super interesting. And it's so painfully obvious that it's a pair-your-spares situation. I really wish they'd just give her Kyle, he has the patience of a saint. Anyway, Isobel's pigtails are cute af (rip my Isobel/Maria/Kyle heart - I would have taken Isobel interrupting Delmanes and Heather's post with pigtails today as signs if not for genetics).
- Anatsa and Isobel's development seems to have taken place completely off-screen, like everything else gay on this show, so I'm guessing it's gonna stick. Honestly...I guess this is controversial but Isobel and Maria have really good chemistry and a history. I know their bond is supposed to read "sibling" but it doesn't for me. And rather than waste time watching them flirt with these one-note (ah, Greg chimes in right on time with a convenient line any rando could have delivered) LIs, I'd much rather see them get closer. The whole related thing has thrown a wrench into it for me. That said, it's nice to watch a woman be encouraged to go after another woman. 🎉
- Alex the sci-fi/fantasy nerd figuring out immediately that the hallucination is his own subconscious is 100% legit. Much like Kyle not letting his uncle pull a classic tall-dark-and-broody exit, I appreciate Alex's 4th-wall break moment.
- Not Max and Liz proving that discussions about s2 drama can occur on Roswell New Mexico?! What? Must be a straight thing. Lucky them.
- Isobel is actually acting a lot like Sherlock Holmes when he's on a case, from the wardrobe to the focus, and it's hot. Also, totally believable that Isobel would be able to pull up that pod from under the ice because we know she's been training even if it didn't happen onscreen. Because she told us. Just a suggestion.
- I love the idea of Jim Valenti as a double-agent, but I don't see how Eduardo thought he could keep Kyle safe by never knowing him. It feels like there's a lot more here Eduardo isn't saying.
- It wasn't a sister-fight that Maria and Isobel had, but whatever (no one got physically shoved or brought up a horrifying memory from 100000 years ago to shove in someone's face in public - doesn't count).
- Also, why would you waste a glass by throwing it into the fireplace? Wouldn't it just explode back in your face? Man, the show is trying so hard with Maria and Greg, I want to give them some kind of romance-novel award for effort (but not success).
- Not Liz and Max showing us that it's possible to move forward by discussing your past mistakes like adults instead of pretending they didn't happen!? What? Must be a straight thing. Lucky them.
- Draw a line on the bottle? No way, Valenti, he obviously wants you to chuck that whole thing straight into the fire in a fit of passion to prove that his words had an emotional impact.
- Also, Kyle wins the prize for this episode for that speech to Uncle Edgelord. Everyone go home. When do I get a Kyle and Alex spin-off where they travel the world, defying sci-fi tropes and seducing beautiful men and women?
- Not Liz and Max talking loudly about aliens while breaking and entering! This one is actually very believable, I take it back.
- It was idiotic of Liz to trust Heath. And Echo keep having this same fight because MAX IS RIGHT BUT THE SHOW WON'T LET HIM BE. Which is so obnoxious. I would forgive Liz for almost any sin (like, idk, getting a better romantic storyline because she's straight) because she's gorgeous and smart and tough and I wanna go live with her and her mad scientist energy on a deserted island somewhere. But she's being real dumb rn.
- I love the t-shirt and if Vlambase doesn't sell one I will. But he couldn't have held up a radio and blasted some Barry White? I feel like that would have cleared everyone but Alex put of the building real fast. Also, what is time on Roswell NM? Was Alex just setting the alarm every so often for kicks? Does Eduardo really not check in on staff who are working with dangerous technology for days on end? Also, why is this entire plot happening over a single goddamn episode instead of two or more so that we can really feel Alex wasting away under the machine's influence? The reason this twist is at all surprising is also the entire plot's undoing - Alex's demeanor wasn't exactly one of a man obsessed (or an addict, tbh) in his last scene.
- Anyway, back to Rizzoli and Isles. I definitely am always super excited to hear the details of my sister's sex life. All the time. That is totally a sister thing except where it's really not. Do any of these writers actually have a sister? I feel like they must because the Michael/Max/Isobel sibling chemistry is always bang on but Maribel is just...flirty lady city. Oh, and look, the beard just showed up with coffee to cockblock - it really is R&I!
- Back to Alex's plot line, which, much like Isobel's coffee, is Express To-Go. He's become haggard and worn in the time it's taken Michael's mom to find a cute sweater in the void. Seriously, we wasted like 3 whole episodes where Alex was presumably sitting in DS twiddling his thumbs and now he's being worn down by the machine in a single episode? Why didn't this plot start back in episode 3 or 4? Like...look, I don't come on here to be an asshole. But I just really hope they're taking note of what worked this season and what didn't because HOLY PACING FIASCO BATMAN. Just because you're giving us Malex doesn't mean everything else can just be hot garbage (not the acting, Taylor's doing his best to sell this). Also, when did Alex put his leg back on? I have so many questions but they aren't the good kind, so Michael better ride in soon and save this mess.
- Regarding what Nora is saying, it's fine, it makes sense but the zero build up makes it completely ineffective. Alex is afraid he doesn't love enough - it would have been nice to see that over several episodes instead of just being told in a burst of sudden exposition but, you know. Nice straight things we can't have, I guess.
- If Michael and Alex want their relationship to "purr" they could, idk, talk through their past misunderstandings like people in relationships do. Or the show could keep throwing exposition bombs at them, idek.
- Are those empty toilet paper rolls inside the machine? I knew the CW was budget but come on...
- And we finally get the Heath connection and it's to our brand new trope-y character, Wise Old Black Man Dallas. It's surprising but only because the 4th alien didn't exist before this episode. So, good job.
Overall, not the worst episode of RNM ever. I only wondered why I watch this show maybe 3 times this episode. And Michael's enthusiasm for Alex was adorable.

The Batman (dir. Matt Reeves)
-Jere Pilapil-
The length is the aspect that might stick about The Batman, so let’s start there. The movie is damn near three hours, and if you’ve read my thoughts about long movies before, you know that I find “it’s too long” to be unspecific and longer movies to be generally justified. For The Batman, its duration is purposeful: this movie feels like a comic book. You could probably evenly divide this thing up into 20-30 minute chunks as “chapters” or “issues”with titles like “The Batman meets the Cat”, “The Batman Interrogates The Penguin” or “The Last Riddle” in comic book form. Matt Reeves has cited Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s The Long Halloween as a major influence on this film, and you can feel that structure in that way. Batman is solving a mystery (in the book: the kidnapping of Harvey Dent, in the movie: trying to find the Riddler and his motives) that carries him through the story, but each step is its own issue, a story within a story. I love that.
But it’s also a bad way to structure a movie, because you can put a comic book down. The last hour or so of The Batman felt like reading a trade paperback and flipping through the last hundred or so pages to see how many issues are left in the book. It’s, again, true to the comics that Batman’s job is never done: just when one bad guy gets taken down, another springs up with even worse plans, etc. Intellectually, I like that, but physically it’s hard not to feel restless as things just keep happening. This movie’s pacing feels like watching Matt Reeves build a house of cards and then slowly, neatly take it apart and put it away when you just want him to blow it down and watch the chaos.
The other influence Reeves has cited is 70s crime movies, like The Conversation, Chinatown or The French Connection, and it’s very accurate to say The Batman is akin to them. Batman is a detective first, here, taking in clues, catching details others miss, deciphering cyphers, interrogating, etc. In this sense, this is the Batman movie I’ve wanted for a very long time, though the thing about Chinatown is that Jake Gittes wasn’t expected to have a blow out action scene, and his uncovering of a conspiracy was the climax (also, he uncovered the truth couldn’t do shit about it, and the movie ended. That’s antithetical to the Batman ethos, and doing something about it takes, ugh, time). I definitely got a kick out of watching the uneasy alliance between Batman and every cop (and the easy alliance with Jeffrey Wright’s Jim Gordon). at least.
On many, many levels I think this movie does an excellent job: Robert Pattinson is great as a deeply haunted Bruce Wayne (not likely to be most people’s favorite interpretation of the character, but it fits) and excellent as Batman, a character the movie treats as a horror movie monster come to life. Zoe Kravitz’ Catwoman is a perfect foil for Batman, and Andy Serkis’ Alfred pairs well as a mentor to Bruce. Paul Dano makes for a terrifying Riddler, a concept I could not conceive before this, though I’m not sure what to make of him in the last third or so of this thing. I love this depiction of Gotham, which is so broken and crime riddled that Batman’s efforts barely make a dent. For nearly the whole movie, I was willing to luxuriate in its vibe (though actually living there would likely kill me) for nearly the whole runtime, but much like Batman and his villains, sometimes you just reach a point where you’ve had enough. 8/10

Slides a ⭐ for a star person :p
Holy shit it took over a year and I barely remember which fanfic ask this is about...I think it's like a director's cut one? REGARDLESS! I do remember the star was to like talk about whatever - and while looking for a WIP I came across an attempt to answer this WITHIN a wip? Past Nico what were you thinking?!
I do know this was written sometime before Ch15 of Terpsichore came out, because there were a few references? But I rephrased the wording a bit.
Forgive me for using this as an excuse to just babble on about how I choose the music titles for chapter sections in Terpsichore, but also, I'm not entirely sorry haha Without further Ado! Here’s hoping this rambling makes sense haha!!
⭐ AN ANSWER!(♥→o←♥)
So it’s taken me a long time to figure out how I wanted to answer this. For a while I was going to ramble about M*A*S*H how it was a rather formative show for me growing up, especially in its anti-war message as well as how it feels like a comedy played in a minor key. There was even going to be a link to a video essay on the show, and then I was going to hint at a want to write a series following the changelings in a pre-show context in the sort of vibe M*A*S*H gave.
But it got lost, and weighty…and…idk, I can’t seem to stick to a lot of things these days? I don’t know.
But there’s always been in me the want to attempt to explain why I choose the music pieces I choose to title the sections in each chapter. Cause despite the little message at the bottom of the first chapter and the last chapter talking about motifs leitmotifs…writing prose is nothing like composing music.
And not only that I’m sure less than half of the people reading the fic will listen along with the playlist. Which is 100000% fine! I anticipate it even!
Because at best, those sectional pieces serve less as soundtrack more like a silent movie’s musical medley.
Because it’s the written word, and I’m not Andrew Hussie ldgj though the day I find out how to put a little ‘play button’ to listen to music during a fic, I might do that. But at this point in time Hell No haha.
Despite this, there is a process behind my music selections.
There is a difference between what I consider ‘corpse de ballet’/ ‘ensemble’ sections, and ‘leads’ / ‘duet’ sections.
Or what my poor readers go through as ‘a shit ton of prospective shifts’ and two prospectives at best, at the same time. I dont know why I’m such a fan of bouncing between perspectives so much that you probably feel seasick. I always consider it a miracle anyone understands what the heck is going on dfjglk The answer is probably because I like third person omniscient writing, and am a sucker for situational/character irony. But I’m also a grammar school drop out haha and don’t actually know the rules of writing by heart? I’m just a fool with a bunch of vibes and a dictionary doing their best lol.
[ stressed coffee sip ] Fake it til you make it baby
But yeah! Enough borderline weird self deprecating! Let’s talk music!!
So! Usually when writing a section I try and think about who are the central characters in the section, and or what is the theme/emotion I’m trying to call on. Is there a motif, or a reference I can play on musically? An idea or concept I can echo or even enhance? Will it be a specific genera of music tied to a character because that character embodies and or is known for a specific genera (example: Nomura and Opera- more on that at during ACTII )
Once I answer those questions, I’m able to narrow down my music choices. Which, again, acts more like a book of suggested musical medley orchestras and musicians would purchase during the silent movie era as like a cheat sheet of what they could play during a specific scene.
So…for instance, for a character like Barbara Lake I wouldn’t use video game music -or maybe I could…but it would only be in terms of perhaps referencing her son.- who I would have a higher chance at choosing to select a video game music piece for (hang on to your butts ACT II Zelda soundtrack).
In the fic I’ve built the idea that in order to explain Barbara’s ability to paint, that she not only took classes but was part of the production team in putting on a play, mainly in set design painting props. Which opens me to a world of musical options when it comes to Barbara’s character. Especially when certain musicals hold songs that can be really fitting to her character later on. An example of this can be seen in ch3 “Aquarius”, and ch14 “Julia”.
Ch3 is Barbara’s big planned picnic date. The first date she and Walter go on after she ingested the binding spell. The two of them coming together, but also the magic of which awakening something magical inside.
And Ch14 in which the binding spell is broken, but also whatever was holding Barbara’s potential to reaching towards that magical something inside her is also broken. And in a sort of my own attempt at written diegesis between the narrative and the song selections in the sections, the lyrics to Aquarius is written out as Barbara depends into the water. In which it is no longer the dawning of Aquarius, Aquarius is starting to take center stage. Their cue is played.
That would be my example on a very character driven musical choice.
Not only that, but it is at Ch3 where Walter is influenced more and more to Barbara’s appreciation to musicals, so much so that it begins to influence his own array of music pieces. His dreams no longer dialogue from movies he fell asleep to, but sometimes full on reproductions of staged musicals and plays. An example of this can be seen in Ch11 On the Right Track from Pippin the Musical - which oof I could go into a full dissertation on in regards to changelings/Pippin and The Pale Lady/Leading Player.
Not only that, but due to influence from Barbara’s love we get the moment of Walter’s ‘I want’ section piece in the form of Ch9 “Corner of the Sky” (aka Pippin’s I want song as well). The moment before this happened there was the interaction with Angor AND Otto AND the repercussions of Angor attacking the school. It is clear to these characters that Strickler is not giving his all in killing Jim, and perhaps never tried to give his all. Something that Otto proclaims as Strickler making excuses, and Strickler insists is tact.
Then there is the situational character driven choice.
I’m going to continue to use Barbara as an example here, and say that THIS can be seen in Ch2 “No. 9 – Finale Andante” and ch12 “Le Lac Des Cygnes Introduction: Moderato Assai”
Both of these music pieces come from Swan Lake. The reasoning behind the choice is probably asinine in thought process (Barbara Lake, Swan Lake), but also thought out in the sense of the following:
In Season3 of Trollhunters Morgana, in order to attempt to reacquire her shadow staff from Strickler (“The Exorcism of Clair Nuñez), transforms herself to take Barbara Lake’s physical form.
IN THE BALLET SWAN LAKE The wizard Von Rothbart, in order to obtain what they want, transforms (granted someone else) Odile to look like the hero Odette in order to trick the prince into proclaiming this imposter Odile as their one true love. In which Odile is the mirror to Odette, and while looking similar (in fact typically the ballerina who performs as Oddette would also perform as Odile) are opposites in spirit.
And, at least in Terpsichore, what near primordial eldritch force can rival that of the Eldritch Queen that we know from cannon will inevitably impersonate Barbara Lake?
But wait, there’s more.
In chapter 2 the piece used in section 2 is the end of ACTI from Swan Lake. The music hints not only the arrival of Odette, but also her inevitable tragedy. What is written in this section, briefly at that cause we watched how the scene plays out in the show, you don’t need me writing that back at you, but I digress- What is WRITTEN in this section is Barbara sipping the enchanted tea that binds herself to Waltolomew Strickler. Something that you, the viewer and fan will know ends in tragedy, as do I the writer and also fan knows will end in tragedy. The only people out of the loop here are the poor poor characters.
And then the revolving door of bad situations that is ch12 happens, and we return to Swan Lake with “Le Lac Des Cygnes Introduction” In which Barbara is introduced to Jim Lake’s Trollhunting world, finally. But wait! There’s EVEN more.
Because not only is Barbara introduced to Jim’s Trollhunting world, Barbara begins to allow herself an introduction to that weird magical more that’s inside her via dream. And YOU/WE the reader/writer/audience, are introduced to the strange figure Giselle is talking to on the beach of Lake Superior…who…well, you’ve probably already have an idea as to who that figure is ;)c
There are also moments when I just select a song piece because I think it fits Thematially well - ch11’s “Powerhouse” section. Aka the music that plays in Looney Tunes whenever an assembly line montage occurs - to which in that section Jim Draal and Walter are putting together the booby-traps to thwart Angor Rot (as well as try to reassemble some sort of emotional connection between them). Or it could be a reference to a meme I really enjoyed, example Ch12’s “Roundabout” aka the music piece known vernacularly as “The Jojo Meme” but also like…meme aside it’s really good and fits and just lkfgjkgsdj I have a lot of feels about Roundabout and I won’t apologize for it haha
And yet, something I pride myself in, is that you don’t need to know all of this to enjoy the story. It isn’t necessary to listen to the Swan Lake pieces or even the Musicals, or even the Jojo Meme. Because, if I did my job right, those echoes ought to be in the writing. The pieces to the section have always been optional. Just little markings in a booklet to be given to you the reader/composer as a suggestion and you can choose to play those pieces along to the silent film, or boot up a ragtime. And that’s the power you have. And that’s equally as wonderful!

Pond Diving - Katelynw93

Welcome to today’s Pond Diving Spotlight! We hope that you enjoy this little insight to our members and perhaps even find some useful tips for your own writing. Happy reading!
Want to volunteer, send us an ask! We’re looking forward to learning more about all of you! Not sure what PD is, you can learn more here.

“Don’t Be Koi About It” - All About You
Name: Katelyn, but most people call me Kate, Katie or sometimes even Kat.
Age: 27
Location: Originally from Kansas, but have been located in Upstate NY for the last six years.
URL: @katelynw93
Why did you choose your URL: It’s usually the username that I use for everything and if I’m being honest, I’m not very creative when it comes to titles or names. Lol. I’ve been meaning to change it; I just need to decide on what.
What inspired you to become a writer: Well, when I was in middle school (maybe seventh or eighth grade), my best friend and I decided to write a story together and post it on a fanfiction site (Can’t remember the site name, though.) And I just loved it. We never did finish that story. Lol. But eventually I started branching out and found some roleplay writing sites.
How long have you been writing: Started writing in middle school (2006/2007), but really got into it in 2009 with RP. However, September of this year (2020) was the first year I started really writing fics by myself and opening posting them.
What do you do when you are not writing i.e. Job/Hobbies etc? I work a lot, usually an average of 40+ hours a week; I am a manager at a popular food chain restaurant and on the weekends, a cashier at a gas station to provide a little extra cash for my family. When I’m not working, my time is spent with my two kids; Alekzander (Zander) who just turned five this past November and Lincoln (Link) who will be two in February. Outside of work and my family, I’m usually writing. Sometimes if I’m feeling extra creative or inspired, I’ll create a few crackships for couples I really enjoy. Lol.
How long have you been in the SPN Fandom? I actually found Supernatural around the same time I started writing, so back in ninth grade, so 2008/2009. It was honestly an accident too, because I was searching for Smallville episodes (I have an unhealthy addiction to Superman and DC/Marvel.) and stumbled upon an ad for Supernatural. Was instantly intrigued and fell in love. Seasons 1 - 5 (the Kripke era) are my favorite.
Are you in any other fandoms and do you write for them? Oh yea, I love TV shows and movies, and as I’ve already stated above, I love DC and Marvel. I’ve also written for Grey’s Anatomy and am willing to write for more, but SPN, DC and Grey’s are currently the only ones I’ve written for. I love The Vampire Diaries, One Tree Hill, Private Practice, Station 19, 9-1-1, Game of Thrones, The Witcher, Merlin, Dexter, Psych, and so, so many more. There are too many to list. Lol.
Do you do any writing outside of fanfiction? If so, tell us about it? Other than RPing, not really. I mean, I did try to do an original story with my friend when I was younger, but it never went anywhere. But I am willing to try someday.
Favorite published author: Other than the really big authors like; J.K. Rowling, George R.R. Martin, Jim Butcher, Nicholas Sparks, Suszanne Collins, I really like (and maybe it’s cliche) Stephenie Meyer. The Twilight Saga made me fall in love with reading and eventually, that love led me to writing. Those books hold a special place in my heart.
Have you ever read a book that made an impact on your life? Which one and why?: Well, I guess I sort of answered that one already. But there truly are so many amazing books out there and still so many more to discover.
Favorite genre of fanfic (smut, angst, fluff, crack, rpf, etc): Oh man, I’m not gonna lie, a majority of what I read is probably smut. But I am particularly fond of angst. I want you to make me cry. Really dig and stab into my emotions. Lol. And then come back in with some fluff. Haha.
Favorite piece of your own writing: Well, that would have to be Sweet Cherry Pie because it was really the first piece I’ve ever finished and published online. It was inspired by an RP that I am currently involved in and they are my favorite couple in said RP. It got so much positive feedback after I shared it that it inspired me to keep writing. I was so nervous about posting it, but I am glad I did.
Most underrated fic you have written: Oh I’m not sure. Maybe Love Bites. I am a sucker for Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries crossovers. I really loved writing this fic and am eager to write more.
Story of yours that you’d most like to see turned into a movie/tv show: Oh damn, um, it’d be cool to see any of them like that. But maybe Sweet Cherry Pie or Out of the Fire (my firefighter!Dean series).
Favorite Tumblr Writer(s): There are so many, but I usually find myself reading work from; @impala-dreamer, @katehuntington @deanwanddamons, @muchamusedaboutnothing.
Favorite Fic from another writer: This one is tough because there are so many amazing fics out there, especially ones that I adddddore; but if forced to choose, one story that will always stick with me would have to be Treacherous by @idkhaylijah OR The Sullivan Series by Kate Huntington
Favorite character to write: Dean Winchester. I adore Dean and he’s probably the easiest for me to write. I have written the most fics with him and I portray him often in the RPs that I do.
Favorite Pairing to write: Dean with anyone, but my favorite would be Dean x Caroline.
Least favorite character to write (and why): That’s a tough one, cause there’s not really any that I’m uncomfortable with or dislike writing. Maybe characters with accents, because I don’t really know how to capture that in writing yet? I’m pretty open with my writing and am willing to try mostly anything.
Do you have anyone you consider a mentor? Oh definitely. When I first started RPing, there was another girl (Jocelyn) that I used to write with and she influenced a lot of my writing. She was older than me and had more experience and gave me a lot of tips on how to get better. She is an amazing writer and had the potential of going far with it, but life happens and unfortunately, she doesn’t write anymore. But she is booming on Youtube, so that’s pretty impressive. It’s pretty cool to see how far she’s come.
Do you have any aspirations involving your writing? I used to want to be a journalist when I was younger, but other than that, not really. I just want to have fun with it and write something meaningful for someone, and always improve and get better.
How many work-in-progress stories do you have: I have a few ideas jotted down, maybe ten, but I haven’t actually started any of them. I have so many bingo cards I need to finish, but with my work schedule, it’s been pretty crazy.
What are you currently working on? My main project is Out of the Fire.
“Pond Diving” - All About The Writing
What/who has had the biggest influence on your writing? Definitely the RPing that I’ve done and am currently doing. My friend Alesha has been the longest RP partner that I’ve had and her writing is phenomenal - and it helps a lot too when your mind's work in similar ways; her and I always seem to be on the same wavelength when it comes to writing. I love it. But like me, she has a very busy schedule and writing is limited.
Best writing advice you've been given: Have fun with it, write what you want to write and always be open to helpful criticism. And don’t stress about it, either. Write in your own time. It’s meant to be fun, not stressful.
Biggest obstacle you’ve faced in your writing: Just finding the time to write and getting over being so self conscious about my writing. I don’t let anyone in my real life read what I write.
What aspects of writing do you find difficult when you write fanfiction? Just capturing the personalities of the canon characters sometimes; if it’s a character I’m not used to writing, I worry about portraying them the right way. And I have trouble individualizing the characters (separating them from myself/my own personality), like when I create an OC for an RP, sometimes when I have too many, their personalities all become the same in ways (if that makes sense?). And accents. I have trouble with accents. Oh, and fight/action scenes. They take me a bit.
Is there anything you want to write but are afraid to (and why): I am always going to be afraid, no matter what it is that I’m writing, because I worry about it succeeding. I want to write for other fandoms though, I guess, but like I said, I worry about capturing the characters right and having a decent storyline that is unique.
What inspires/motivates you to write: Honestly, positive feedback. I love hearing what people think about my writing and it motivates me to continue.
How do you deal with self-doubt: That’s a tough one. I guess I just look towards my writing friends or beta’s for reassurance or I go back and read the positive comments and likes on the fics I’ve already shared. It encourages me to continue.
How do you deal with writer's block: I usually listen to music and I’ll look up gifs of my favorite characters, create stories in my head with those gifs or I’ll create gif sets of specific scenes. If that doesn’t work, I’ll take a break and watch one of my favorite TV shows for inspiration.
Do you plan/outline your story before you start: For my RPs, I have a group chat with those I’m writing with and we usually shoot ideas back and forth, but mostly we wing it. For my fics, I normally just wing it, but with Out of the Fire, I have a rough idea of what I want from each part. With that said, my ideas or plans often change as I’m writing. These characters have a mind of their own sometimes. Lol.
Do you have any weird writing habits: I don’t know about any weird habits, but I always have music on and I guess I have to do it in spurts. I’ll write a few paragraphs or sentences, pause and scroll tumblr or facebook or gifs, and then go back, reread what I wrote and then write a few more. Rise and repeat.
Have you ever received hateful comments on your fic and how do you deal with it? So far, no I haven’t, and I hope I don’t ever have to deal with that. But I know it’s bound to happen. I guess if I were to ever encounter that, I’d like to say that I’ll take it as a learning experience but I honestly don’t know I’d feel about that.
Conversely: what’s been some of your favorite feedback on your fanfic? Oh man, I guess my favorite would have to be ellewritesfix05 reaction to the secret santa fic I wrote for her; Dean Fucking Winchester. And all the positive feedback I’ve gotten for Out of the Fire.
If you could give one piece of advice to a new and/or struggling writer, what would it be? Have fun with it. Write what you want and what you’re comfortable with. Don’t be afraid of constructive criticism and most importantly, don’t stress. Writing is fun.

September 17: 3x07 Day of the Dove
I am incredibly discombobulated today—usual weekend nocturnal shenanigans I guess! Anyway it’s somehow midnight. Gonna try to write up these note on the Classic episode The Day of the Dove in as efficient a manner as possible.
Hmm, a planet with wavy pink Fraggle plants. I like it already.
But where is Spock? Very suspicious.
I really appreciate Kirk giving a little speech to set up the overall question/issue for us. (I know he does this all the time with the Captain’s logs but this is out loud and so… more obviously expository.)
Oh no, it’s our old friends…the Klingons.
I will admit that this ONE TIME, the Klingon is being reasonable. Like, it is reasonable to think that Kirk and the Enterprise attacked his ship, given that his hip WAS attacked, and who else would it be?
Three years of peace between the Klingons and the Federation? That is inclusive of the show so all this tension must technically be “peace” and also implies there was something more like a direct war going on, like, right before Kirk got the captaincy.
Zoolander voice: What is this, a colony of the INVISIBLE?
“We have no devil. But we understand the habits of yours.”
No takers? No takers on the torture? No volunteers to be mercilessly tortured by the Klingons?
Star Trek Beyond could have had Kirk and Chekov bond over being brothers! I mean, to other people.
They’ll kill 100 hostages at the first sign of treachery. He does know there are only 400-some people on the ship right? Maybe you should pace yourself, Kang.
Kirk’s so badass he needs MULTIPLE guns trained on him just to use the phone.
Oh-ho secret message to Spock. Which version of the iPhone will be capable of doing THAT?
The Klingons are “suspended in transit” is an awfully nice way of saying they’re just dematerialized atoms in space. Philosophy major and/or Bones nightmare fuel.
How did Kang not see this coming, by the way? Like, he just says “I’m taking your ship now, me and my 6 men versus your 400-some men, and I’ll do this by simply declaring it to be so. Now let’s beam up to your ship, where I’ll be greatly outnumbered, and there are armed security guards all around me.” Guess he’s been reading The Secret!
WIFE AND SCIENCE OFFICER
Aka the most important part of this whole episode.
Kirk’s face is very ?????? You can have both????
It’s legitimately not even important for her to be the science officer tbqh. Like that is so gratuitous. That’s just in there to drive me insane.
"We're prisoners, somehow, after I demanded to come on the ship, assuming they'd just give it to me without any kind of fight. How DID this happen?”
Federation death camps lol—someone’s been watching Fox News.
I do kind of wonder… is this an actual rumor that goes around the Klingon homeworld or is it something that the alien entity put in her head specifically to make her angrier right now? I mean it really could be either.
I also appreciate this episode for being pretty much the only one to actually attempt to give the Klingons a reason for being as they are. The Romulans… maybe aren’t well-described, but they do have a sort of regalness to them, appropriate for being related to Vulcans, and you can kind of imagine that they are the way they are because they’re Vulcans without the intense self-control. Plus they’re literally only in 2 TOS eps and in the second, the Federation are the aggressors. But the Klingons show up a half-dozen times only to be depicted each time as just like Cartoonishly Bad, aggressive, violent, and selfish for basically no reason. And I mean, some people really are!! But TOS has so much nuance in other places, that it always seemed a little disappointing to me that the Klingons are really just like ‘well we’re just bad and we hate everyone and we really like killing I guess.” At least in this ep there’s a little more added to that: that there is poverty on their world, that they feel aggrieved, that they feel unprotected, that taking and conquering is how they look after themselves…
I think that’s later in the episode though.
He’s detaining them in the LOUNGE lol. With their favorite dishes available to them to eat. Absolutely barbarous conditions.
I can’t believe Chekov is hanging in the elevator with the cool kids. Like, one of these things really isn’t like the others.
Kang is officially sure of himself for someone currently imprisoned in the lounge, that most fearsome of Federation death camps.
Hmm, could the glittery light alien have taken over??
You know what, that's a lot of tasks for Johnson to do all by himself: search the whole ship, fix the engines, and free 400 people.
Sulu would love this: everyone gets a sword!!
“Bridge. I gotta show this to Sulu immediately.”
Klingons have maintained a dueling tradition. That’s interesting. Finally some characterization going on.
Spock is really living up to his logical nature today. Everyone else has gone off the emotional deep end and he’s like “have you considered this completely rational explanation that accounts for the actual, observed facts??”
Whoops Chekov is actually an only child. Scratch that previous Beyond headcanon. (Interesting that his dead brother does really resemble Sam though—killed on a research colony??)
Love that Sulu knows that about him though.
Oh, that’s a pretty schematic picture of the Enterprise. I want that on a t-shirt.
Lol the pan out to the armory, now filled with… swords!!
Do ALL of these men have a fetish for swords? Sulu and fencing, Spock displaying swords in his quarters, and Kirk in his San Francisco apartment, and Scotty salivating over this Scottish blade.
“Klingon units.”
Finally Sulu gets his sword! It’s what he deserves.
Love that the shiny light alien also has a fetish for swords.
Oh no, it’s our old adversary, an alien life force.
What is the alien’s purpose? Um, I’m pretty sure its purpose is to start shit.
“An appropriate choice of terms, Captain.” I don’t even remember what this is referring to but I think it’s pretty clear that Spock is enjoying himself during a crisis again.
Bones, being so dramatic. Were there atrocities? He’s talking about the Klingons as if they were literally hacking off limbs—it’s a few stab wounds here and there, chill.
Oooh, time to behave like military men—strong words. (But I thought it wasn’t the military?? @ S**** P****) (This might not even be my best argument, given the context of this episode, but I’m sticking with it.)
This is like a giant game of capture the flag.
AU that’s just about the Enterprise crew playing capture the flag with the Klingons.
Sulu in the background standing guard with his sword
Damn, turning on Spock with the slurs now!!
Spock was absolutely ready to kill him. Like he would 100% have taken him out with a blow to the head. And he’d been doing such a good job of not feeling the alien’s effects so far! Admittedly, that was a strong provocation though.
Honestly, I really like this scene. It’s uncomfortable and tense and you can really see how the alien is bringing out the worst possible influences of their respective races. And I liked how Spock was definitely full on pre-Reform Vulcan for a minute there. It was a more effective portrayal of what that might have looked like than All Our Yesterdays tbqh.
A result of… stress?
Kirk got himself out of it first. He’s so strong. He knows himself so well, he cannot be outsmarted by any alien.
“We’ve been taught to think in terms other than war.”
“The alien brings out the worst of us—patriotic drumbeating…even race hatred.”
He’s so sad; he can’t imagine thinking like that about Spock :(
Sulu in a Jeffries tube! A man of many talents. It’s okay bb, take credit for turning on the lights.
The alien must have been getting bored. The Klingons must have been doing too well, and the playing field needs to be leveled for maximum shit-stirring.
“Let’s find that alien.” That’s how I ALWAYS feel.
Oh, Kang, you’re so close—“What power supports our battle but thwarts our victory.” So, so close to getting it.
ALIEN DETECTED.
Spock takes his sword, of course.
“Jim.” Obligatory Jim moments hit differently when they’re not so obligatory.
“Jim—stop hitting my protégé. And put that sword down.”
Kirk looks so sad, picking Chekov up to carry him bridal style.
Also in addition to ‘race hatred’ I think we need to add ‘rape-y tendances’ to the bad stuff that the alien is inspiring here.
“A brief surge of racial bigotry. Most distasteful.” Spock winning for understatement of the year.
They're assuming the alien is trying to test out their relative powers but I think it just wants entertainment. I mean, doesn’t it look like a naughty little thing?
Mara’s outfit is… little shorts? Interesting. Usually not my style but she makes it work.
Spock doesn’t even look at Johnson as he falls lol. Another one bites the dust.
“It exists on the hate of others.”
What does this remind me of? Oh, the Vast of Night and the whole “aliens made us do every bad thing ever” conspiracy theory. At least this one makes more sense, in part because it is not quite so overwhelmingly broad!
All hostile attitudes must be eliminated, he says, and there's Mara right behind Kirk giving him a death stare lol.
Kang is so obviously posing. Google Earth, always taking pictures.
Only a few minutes before drifting forever in space becomes inevitable? Good thing Kirk works well under pressure.
“Well… do whatever you can, Scotty. You know the drill.” Doesn’t even bother giving real directions anymore. We’ve been in this scenario before.
“So we drift in space, with only hatred and bloodshed aboard.”
And the 392 people below just get to…live in Enterprise prison, I guess.
Star date: Armageddon. So dramatic!
I’m not even making that up; that’s an actual quote. Can you imagine being an Admiral listening to this?
“Stop the war now.” An actual line, really aired on television.
Spock wants to threaten the wife lol. That's the old pre-Reform Vulcan seeping through. Surak who?
Damn, Kang is cold. “Eh, she gets the concept of being killed in battle.” They’re gonna need marriage counseling after this.
“There is another way. Mutual trust and help.” Yes that’s my hero!!
“No one can guarantee the actions of another.” Can’t remember the context of this entirely anymore, but great line.
The entity is loving this—multi-person choreographed sword fight!!
"Those who hate and fight must stop themselves. otherwise it is not stopped.” Another baller line. Spock has a lot of deep thoughts today. And so does Kirk. And Kang.
Kirk tries to reason with the alien. Nice try.
“Shoo. Shoo, alien. Off the ship, go away.”
Omg that last moment—Kang slapping Kirk’s back way too hard, Spock’s completely ridiculous wide-eyed expression when he does, like some sort of combo of amusement and confusion, and then Sulu just passing on by in the background….
Then the alien just yeets itself into space. And that’s the end!
Always feels weird when there’s no wrap up on the bridge.
Also, what are they going to do with the Klingons? They have no ship. They really did come out of this a lot worse than Kirk and co. No ship, huge casualties—and no one to blame even, but the alien.
I feel like the alien messed up a little in killing so many Klingons. Like, it could have accomplished its purpose, angering the Klingons and turning them on Kirk, by attacking the ship a little less violently—you know they’d react to 5 deaths pretty much the same as 400, and then there would be many more people to fight forever and produce that sweet sweet anger!
Maybe the alien’s powers aren’t strong enough to influence 800 people though. Also it wants equal forces and 800 people wouldn’t fit on the Enterprise, one assumes. So it still makes sense.
That was, of course, an excellent episode. 100% agree with is classic status, even though the main things I remembered going in were the wife + science officer bit, and everyone laughing at the end in a really forced, fake way, in order to make the alien go away.
I thought the Klingons were a lot better/more interesting today than usual. First, I think Kang is a better character, or a better actor maybe, than the others; he has a certain way about him that is… more watchable, more sympathetic. And he’s always saying these really dramatic things that make it seem likely he writes patriotic Klingon war poetry in his off time. Also, including his wife made them seem more… not human obviously, but normal. Not just cardboard cut-out villains. And of course the actual lightly specific motivations I earlier mentioned helped too.
Also, the plotting was very good: it built up slowly but surely over time, so at first the alien’s influence wasn’t that obvious, and then it became more so, and then it became horrifically obvious and extreme. And then you had to re-evaluate earlier moments: was that the alien changing facts in their heads, or a real part of the animosity between humans and Klingons? And it wasn’t always clear, which I appreciated. The tension when the people were at their worst wasn’t overdone, like in that moment with Scotty, Spock, and Kirk—or even in Chekov’s assault on Mara, tbh. The various strategies of the different sides were very entertaining too; there was never a dull moment, and they fit in a lot of straight-up actions and twists into 50 minutes.
The possible threat was truly terrifying, also: stuck in a space ship, forever, unable to die, feeling the worst possible emotions all the time, besieged, angered, despairing, fighting a war that can’t be won, being injured and suffering only to recover and fight again, and it never stops… A perfect nightmare mixture of insanity and violence and pain. And the alien, in encouraging hatred and anger, doesn’t discriminate between sides: they turn on each other just as much as on the Klingons, breeding paranoia and infighting. For eternity.
The episode also felt much more strongly anti-war than I remember tbh. Like it was not subtle. Kirk literally says “stop the war” in so many words. He has a part in his speech where he talks about the possibility of other aliens out there, encouraging other wars. And while I do think “maybe the aliens are making us do it” is a cop out explanation, or would be if it were real, the scenario gave the show a lot of room to say, like, pretty ballsy things: to include “patriotic drum beating” along with “race hatred” in a list of corrupting feelings they were experiencing; to show how the same instincts that lead to warring also lead to sexual assault and the aforementioned ‘race hatred;” to reveal the true horror of an endless war by making the participants unkillable and sticking them in a singular space ship in the middle of nowhere; to imply that the combatants of war gain nothing from it, but outside or third-party entities will pull strings of their own design to profit from the conflict as long as possible; even to make an impassioned plea to camera to stop the endlessness of the conflict. Like I can’t even totally unpack this but it is a lot!
Finally, it was also a great Kirk episode, which of course is my most important factor. He’s smart; he’s strong; he’s so sure of himself and his values that he cannot be manipulated to mindless hatred, he represents the values of the Federation, and the show itself; he treats even his enemies with basic respect and humanity; and ultimately, he saves the day.
Okay I was not efficient in writing this up at all! It is very late!!

Hi. There’s a lot of things I really wanna ask but I’ll try to minimize. tee-hee. I am curious of what the batfam did during Harry in a “trial” did they ever retaliate after? And what about Umbridge? Did she ever survive? lol. And is there a sweet inducing brotherly moments between batfam that the hp people are kinda jealous of them? Thank you much. :)
P.S. I read it and it was awesome...looking forward for more will wait for part 7. :)
I haven't quite figured out what Harry's trial would be for in this universe.
Since I don't adhere to JKR's version of magic in America, as far as I see it magic laws in the US are much more laxed.(*) So there really isn't a law about underaged wizardry that can be enforced since Harry only uses magic outside of school when he's home in Gotham.
Now, of course, Fudge could just decided he wants to be a huge dick and charge Harry with it anyway. But he's got enough of a PR nightmare going on as is, so trying to publicly smear the boy-who-lived and then trying to expel him on grounds that under normal circumstances wouldn't stick would probably turn a lot of people against him.
-
But, regardless, let's ignore my rambling about how we would get to that point, and focus on the fact Harry is on trial and potentially going to be expelled for something that shouldn't be happening... His family is pissed.
I think I've mentioned it before, but Jason gets ahold of the Prophet and sees what Fudge is saying about Harry and Dumbledore and immediately starts trying to figure out how much blow back there'd be if he shot the minister of magic... and, honestly, for quite a while, he's convinced the risk is worth it.
The rest of the batfam is still pissed about everything going on here: Too many people are acting like because they don't carry around those stupid little sticks, they can't really be Harry's family. Like they couldn't possibly understand what's going on here.
They had to pry every little ounce of information out of the Order like pulling teeth.
And Bruce has honestly been this close to saying fuck these people - Harry's dedication to this fight is commendable, but nobody here really has his best interest at heart, they just want to keep him away from a mess he's sitting clearly in the middle of. Bruce is not comfortable putting his kid at that kind of risk.
Then this whole kangaroo trial nonsense starts up and everyone is done with all of this ridiculousness. Even Harry is honestly ready to punch out at this point... but he's also kind of petty, and doesn't want to give Fudge the satisfaction of tapping out now. So he goes through with it all, and comes out on top.
-*-*-*-*-*-
As far as Umbridge, I don't see much changing in her story line, except she's made an insurmountable number of more enemies. Though, since she doesn't exactly run in the same circles as the batfam and JLA it's not going to effect her too much...
I always liked to think she had to slink into obscurity. Like god knows she couldn't go back to the ministry after everything. And Harry, again having a moment of being absolutely petty decided that going after her and putting her on trial and potentially into Azkaban would just be validating her, so he purposely has her left out of the people they were going after for supporting or enabling Voldemort.
She's still black listed though, so there's no government job she can hold... and if the rumor mill happens to be turning and Ms Rita Skitter can put her collum to good use for once... well, that certainly had nothing to do with Harry. Nope. Not at all. No idea where Skitter got all those details about the absolute torture Umbridge put her students through for a year.
-*-*-*-*-*-
I don't think jealousy is really much of a thing when it comes to Harry's relationship with his family. I thing most of the adults are happy to see that Harry found a loving home, even if it wasn't how things were originally supposed to go. McGonagall especially, loves that Harry is happy and healthy and clearly cared for, inspite of the situation he was originally left in.
And his friends... well, that's just Harry's family, same as Ron and all of his brothers and sister.
If anything, it's probably a little bittersweet for Remus and Sirius just because James and Lily were their family, and even if they really didn't get to spend a whole lot of time with him, Harry was too. And they never stopped loving him, but his life is so drastically different now than it would have been if things were different. And they have to figure out if they even fit into this version of Harry's life, let alone how.
-*-*-*-*-*-
(*I was heavily influenced by the other wizard named Harry in high school (The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher), so that's where a lot of my ideas on how magic is handled comes from. Basically, as long as you're not using your abilities to do things like kill people or mess with their minds, you can be as open about magic as you want. (Most people don't want to really believe it anyway, so they find ways to write it off.))

Warhammer 40k: Wrath & Glory #41
The party says goodbye to the people on Jonah’s World, mostly the Knights. Larry takes a moment to catch his sister, who is cleaning up the bodies from the square. He says he noticed a rune on her belt that looked a lot like one he has, so he’s going to give his to her, as he supposes she would know what to do with it better than he would. She thanks him for, her voice completely obscured by the mask on her face.
They get onto the Wolves’ ship, Thunderfist’s Howl. When they exit the hangar, there’s a woman there, who hands out messages to Vivek and Larry. Larry goes aside to read the message, which is from his mom and basically boils down to that she wants to see him and that she loves him.
Izarak catches up to Larry, and asks if they may speak. Izarak says he knows that there isn’t going to be a good chance he’ll be taken back into the Ecclersiarchy, in fact the only reason he hadn’t been thrown out already is that his supervisors don’t know where he is. Izarak wants to know if he may be able to join Larry’s crew after all of this is done. He says that the party has started to feel more like friends than anyone back at his work. Besides, he is obviously at odds with some Imperial ideals that are taken as given. Larry tends to agree, and tends to be the same. Larry mentions having been a pilot in the Imperial navy, but he left, when he was ordered to virus bomb a planet. Not that it probably stopped the virus bombing… Izarak says it was still something, better to do something or refuse to do something, even if they may be unable to stop things from happening. Izarak mentions how he was stuffed into becoming a little village priest, when he reported another priest from taking bribes.
Larry says he’ll gladly take Izarak on board, if they can figure out what he can do (Larry jokes about putting Izarak to clean the toilets). He mentions that Izarak was helpful in calming the crew when they were traveling through the Warp; this would be useful in the future too. Izarak says he’ll think about
After that Izarak goes to eat and take a nap and goes to pray in the ship’s chapel.
The Wolves (that is Fafnik, Skarde and Uffe) grab a hold of Chazaqiel and start heading off. Coco runs after them and asks if Uffe has a moment to spare. Uffe sends Fafnik and Skarde ahead. Coco asks if Uffe is a high-ranking Wolf, and Uffe says somewhat (the real answer is yes, very). Coco asks if Uffe could write some sort of an affidavit, testifying that there are eldar on Dysmonia. She wishes to inform her family about that, and perhaps it could help to prove that Jim was killed by eldar. Uffe notes that there isn’t much of a name recognition. Coco asks if people respect Space Wolves, and Uffe shrugs and says Coco would know her family on that front better. But Uffe agrees to write such a thing, after he has checked what is going on with Dysmonia. Coco thanks him.
After that Coco finds the navigation station and asks if she can join to see how they work. The navigating officers, who have no idea who Coco is and what she’s doing there, ask her not to touch anything. Unfortunately the officers talk in their native Fenrisian, so Coco doesn’t get much out of their conversation.
Larry goes to find Vivek, who’s reading his own message in the corner. Larry asks what’s the letter, and Vivek says it’s from Mars; new orders and a promotion. Larry mentions getting a letter from his mom. Vivek says he’s glad to hear she’s alive. Larry says he has something to ask of Vivek, and Vivek comments about him not coming here to just flirt then. Larry says not to worry, he told Coco he wanted to “talk” with Vivek. Anyway, Larry asks if Vivek could introduce him to the captain of the ship, as he’s interested to see how a voidship this size works. Vivek says sure.
He takes him to the bridge and introduces him to the Captain of the ship, an older gentleman named Fjolt Freidasson. Turns out the captainhood of a ship like this is pretty much in the family. Fjolt has a daughter, who will become a Captain after him. Fjolt explains to Larry how the bridge works. Apparently Larry charms the Captain sufficiently enough, that he asks him to come drinking with him, which they do. Fjolt shows Larry a picture of his wife, whom he loves very much, and some pictures of cool ships with Wolf-decals on the side. When they arrive to Baal, Larry goes with Fjolt to check them getting out of Warp.
The party meets up at the ship that’ll take them down to Baal. Vivek is already there. He asks the party not refer to him as Vivek down on the planet, as he’ll be there as a Martian representative. They ask what to call him. He has a name Martians refers to him as, but it is a mouthful (apparently easier to say in Cant Mechanicus), so he asks them to call him Marshal. Apparently a new title, which arrived with the message from Mars. Vivek doubts it will stick, as he only got the promotion, because his tech-priest died on Dimmamar, and Mars needs someone to be high-ranking to toss their weight around. Coco congratulates him on the promotion nonetheless. Larry acknowledges Vivek’s loss, and Vivek shrugs, saying she was a good tech-priest, but losses happen.
Eventually the Wolves join them, Skarde and Uffe carrying a metal casket that turns out to hold Chazaqiel’s remains. Uffe hands over to Coco an affidavit, and Coco thanks him. Uffe lets the party know that he won’t tell the Blood Angels about the party’s dealings with Chazaqiel. They can decide themselves what they’d tell the Blood Angels. The party is obviously worried about it, as they don’t know how, well, bloodthirsty the Blood Angels will be. Uffe explains that he has met with Lord Commander Dante, and he believes that he would not be unfair, though he can not say which one of the Blood Angels they’d be meeting. He recommends they play up the aspect of themselves as victims of Chazaqiel’s influence.
They get to Baal, which is a desolate and ruined place. They are greeted by a woman who takes them towards the monastery-fortress. There is a mournful song echoing around the halls of the monastery. Skarde wonders if they could ever sing something happier, and Uffe comments that there isn’t much to be happy about. Skarde says it reminds him of someone he knows, and asks when he will be hearing Uffe’s aria.
The Angels wish to see the Wolves first, so the rest are taken to a side room to wait, where they are offered some food and drink. Eventually Vivek is taken to meet the Blood Angels, and after that, finally the party. They are taken to a small room, where there is a table, on which Chazaqiel’s remains are laid out. Around the table are the three Wolves and three Blood Angels, one in the blood red armor, one in the librarian colors of blue. The final man is clad completely in gold, adorned with a sorrowful golden mask. A trick of the light makes the mask appear to be angry. This is Dante, the Lord Commander of Imperium Nihilus. The party bows down towards him.
Dante asks the party to speak of what they know about Chazaqiel. The party keeps it vague at first, admitting that they’re somewhat afraid of this situation, being merely bystanders. Eventually they want to bring up the Countess in the situation, hoping to get aid from the Blood Angels in dealing with her. They kind of lie a bit to Dante, and at some point get caught, by claiming to have overheard Chazaqiel talking about the Countess with someone regarding the mushrooms she uses to control the people. Dante encourages them to be truthful, and makes a point that he has been tasked by Lord Commander Guilliman to look after the people of Imperium Nihilus, and that he has sworn to do. That includes the party. The Wolves had also vouched for them, which helps.
Larry comes out with having had the mushrooms put into him and then later removed, and that those mushrooms are now in the hands of an Ordo Xenos Inquisitor by the name of Ace Valerius. He’s alright now, but obviously it’s not something he just wants to put out there. Dante asks how these mushrooms came to be inside Larry, which leads to Izarak explaining about the eldar presence on his home planet (with making it clear there are no eldars on the planet anymore, and pleading that the long-suffered people of Treshan should be left in peace) and came in contact with the Countess. Izarak also mentions them having found a Blood Angel, Michael, who had been caught and kept by the Countess for at least a century. He mentions that Michael doesn’t remember anything about himself, and seems to be having other issues as well. Dante says that Astartes can fall into a kind of a coma if their life is threatened, and waking from that can cause such troubles as they describe. Dante says he can’t off the top of his head tell who Michael might be, but whoever he is, they would gladly take a brother back home.
The Blood Angels promise to send some of them to Llosie to hunt down the Countess with the Wolves. Before they can explain more, another Blood Angel enters, he speaks with Dante a bit, and then hands him something that looks to be a clay tablet with some symbols on it. Dante in turns hands it over to Uffe, who snaps off a piece, crumbles it in his hand and tosses the dust over the table. It has a strange effect. Opposite side of the table, where Vivek is standing, they can see through the dust, he appears as a much younger man; his hair black instead of grey, the lines of his face gone. It disappears quickly, and the only reaction is from Uffe, who mutters only the word “Time”, and then says to Dante that he’ll look into it.
