Is it just me or does anyone get hints that Lely was abusive in some way? (Spoilers below, both for general game stuff and skill checks)

At the very least we know it was toxic because Ruby just tells us that she was legit worried about Klassje being with him. That she has “dangerous patterns” of behavior with men. Could be jealousy, but she seemed genuinely unbothered by that aspect of things. Big deal, she lost interest.

We know that, for a mercenary, Lely was nice. For a mercenary. He liked to party, chat, and fuck. That doesn’t mean he cares about her or what she wants, just that, at least sometimes, they want the same things. But what about when they disagree? Can she “tame the beast” then?

We also know that she’s lying when she doubles down about being 100% sure if you pass the half light check. Besides, she’s shady, yeah, but the only benefit I can see to saying this is a real stretch, because it honestly doesn’t help her sell the story as much as it tanks her credibility. If she wanted sympathy she could’ve said she was, if she wanted an iron clad redirection she could’ve said no she wasn’t (her not being SA’d was directly related to shifting blame to ruby), but 89% is weirdly truthful. It does strike a middle ground between sympathy and redirection, but that doesn’t make it false. If anything, being the truth would make it easier to use. The game even explicitly says she is more prone to half truths and misdirections than full lies. Maybe it was a joke or fucking with us, but she doesn’t treat it like one and neither does the game. The game treats it as dead serious.

We know that she believes it’s possible to deserve being raped. Very specifically that she can think of at least one person who does, and then adds “plenty of people”. A rhetoric check reveals that she rolls her eyes if you tell her otherwise.

We know she lies about their time together, because the details of their encounters she gives don’t match the deserters spying (not when he died, but other ones). In fact, she contradicts herself in the middle of her storytelling.

Lastly, we know that this 89% moment is when a check reveals that she has cigarette burns on her body, which in context adds more weight to her being covered in bruises. It could be kinky, and so could the SA thing. I think that’s sometimes how she sees it (as stated earlier, there’s an 11% of the time when she doesn’t see it that way). But I don’t get the impression they used prior negotiations and safe words, and the skill check that indicates her pride in keeping him contained is a classic response to abuse. And that’s not even mentioning how fucked up they would get.

Here’s the facts: 89% of the time she thinks fondly of it (nostalgic even), 11% of the time she doesn’t, she cared for him a lot, but she was also scared, she says love is terror, she was proud of herself for “taming” him, she’s more than willing to wreck her mind and body, the people who cared for her were worried about their relationship, and Lely said verbatim “I’m gonna rape her”. Is it bravado in front of the mercenaries, is it a hot fantasy, or could it be that he was indifferent to her desires and he saw himself as taking advantage of her? Who knows? Even if it wasn’t that specifically, did he show a bad side to her in other ways?

We can’t know the answers in a game that was designed to make this ambiguous, especially since she would never tell us when she can’t be taken in.

The realest part of the Barbie Movie was when Barbie was like "okay but what if this hurts his feelings? what if this makes him sad? :(" after Ken stole her house, stole her car, and stole her agency, because as a woman you still have to second guess everything you do on the assessment of whether it might hurt a man's feelings.

Ultimately the resolution of Jason and Cass fights comes down to the fact that while he has his own ideals that don't mesh with the bats, Jason can be flexible. DC skipped the whole reconciliation with the family but while he's willing to kill it's generally a means to an end to him, not the whole entire point unless you're talking about Joker. Meanwhile for Cass the question of killing vs not killing is dead serious to her which means any time they're working together and things start going off track it's like:

Jason: Look if we kill this guy we send a message to his boss which makes it easier for us to negotiate with him from a position of power and I just think that-

Cass, snatching one of his guns and pointing it at her own head: Go on, pull the trigger. Kill him. Kill me. Go tell Batman that you let his daughter die to make a negotiation easier. He already let you die so no problem right? You think we should die? You think our life only worthwhile as part of a plan, just because we're killers? Are we doomed? Are we rotten to the core with no hope of redemption? Go on then, kill us and kill part of your soul alongside it. You clearly don't care for it so why are you even trying? Kill yourself along with us, come on Jason let's all just die right?

Jason, slowly backing away: I think you may be projecting a tiny bit so just. Calm down before I call the suicide hotline please.

Cass, slowly lowering the gun and knocking the random henchman unconscious: Yeah that's what I thought, fucking pussy.

i've said it before but it will forever and always make me insane that jacob's ending is to join the cullens for the sake of bella not having to give anything up. they find out jake will be immortal & tied to renesmee forever, so bella gets to smile & say "my family is finally complete! ^-^" but jake already HAS a family. he has a father and 2 sisters. quil, embry, seth and sam are like his brothers. jacob and leah were planning to run away together. he's always been welcome in emily's home, sue has been a family friend since before his birth. bella abandons her mortality by choice because she feels no connection to the people around her, but jacob has really strong bonds. it's clear that every character we meet in la push is like family to him, he's an active member of the community. jake would've graduated high school and been a mechanic, would've grown into a young man. a good friend, a fun uncle, a present son. he's set up to have such a rich life. and he's just magically compelled to give that up. beyond his control, he loses sight of everything, because his high school crush's baby is now the singular most important thing to him. he's perpetually 18 with his perpetually 18 year old girlfriend, running around vancouver or alaska or wherever with the girl who friendzoned him at 16 & her in-laws (who were antagonistic to him for months). and i'm just supposed to say omg yay now he doesn't have to let go of bella! everyone is happy! it's complete madness

I finally watched breaking bad (all within the past week or so while I worked, finished it and watched el camino last night) and I'm confident this isn't a new thought I'm expressing or anything but genuinely how DID an entire generation of dudes convince themselves Walter White was cool and admirable and intended to be sympathetic. I know ppl just lack media literacy sometimes but I'm still so confused

I don't think I've EVER watched a piece of media that so blatantly depicts a guy making the worst possible decisions at every turn and having his life ruined for it and not being redeemed or made sympathetic in any significant or lasting way. the kinds of justifications villains USUALLY give that make people consider them "morally grey" or "tragic" or whatever (everything I did was for my loved ones, I did what I had to to survive, once I was in this I couldn't get out, I just needed you to trust me so I could keep you safe, etc etc) is ALWAYS framed as complete self-serving bullshit when Walt says it, and one of the only shreds of personal growth he ever exhibits in the whole series is when he finally fucking admits that. every time he does something even remotely cool or drops a quotable one-liner, something terrible immediately happens that makes everything worse and makes him look like an unreasonable idiot asshole again. by the end of the series the ONLY characters they can still contrast as being morally "worse" than him are literally a bunch of bloodthirsty neonazis who kept a guy in a cage for several months. this show is practically SCREAMING at you the entire time not to admire Walt. why did every dude I knew in highschool have his face on tshirts and Facebook pfps.

I just don't get it. at least with The Dark Knight's Joker it was like, a feature-length movie and that's it. you spend a lot less time with the Joker and it has a lot less time to delve into his motivations, so there's way more room for flanderization and misinterpretation as people extrapolate the few cool/interesting/sad things they saw into a whole nuanced misunderstood guy in their heads and online. Walter White has 5 seasons' worth of 45min episodes to convince you beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is a miserable fucking loser who ruins everything he touches because of greed and selfishness. if you weren't watching it for that, what WERE you getting out of this. what DID you think this show was about. am I just missing some key piece of context from 2012 or whatever that would help me understand this
