Overall thoughts and opinions on the most famous Phantom adaptations / most famous Eriks

Because these things are fun, i thought maybe it could be interesting for me to reunite my overall thoughts on the most popular adaptations, because everybody has opinions on them (and maybe my takes are super cold and vanilla). Still, it's fun!

I'm also gonna go with the most popular because there are like a million Phantom adaptations and I don't have the energy to rank them all. (i'm also mostly doing the ones that are series / shows / musicals- the books i would pretty much mostly mention the Leroux OG and Kay, and i'm already going somewhere with the second one). (Forgive me all Ken Hill / Song at Midnight / MazM fans)

-The 1925 silent film with Lon Chaney: I'm really biased, but I admit this is my favorite Phantom adaptation, even if i know as a film it's rather limited by the constraints of the era (bad acting, slow pacing, the weird whitewashing of the Persian etc etc). It downplays the tragic romantic elements of the story (Christine is very one-dimensional and seems more afraid of Erik than empathetic), and Erik is written a little too "generic evil villain", but there are elements to suggest that there's more to Erik than meets the eye, and why he's an engaging figure in the first place. Yeah, like most, i hate the ending, but it's saved by overall faithfulness to the novel (he's born deformed! he has a death's head! he has a life of tragedy! he loves Christine! you can't imagine the number of adaptations that don't get these simple things RIGHT), and the subtle moments Chaney adds to make his Erik more three dimensional (the moment in the Apollo's Lyre scene where he holds his mouth in pain lives in my head rent free) It has my favorite movie Erik, and that's all that matters to me. <3 8/10

-The 1943 film with Claude Rains: I always call this film "missed potential". It looks beautiful, it sounds beautiful, it has good quotes, I like the film delving more into Christine's character; but the Abbott and Costello comedy of the two Raouls is out of place, and the writing of Erique is kinda of a mess (and considering he's the most important character in POTO...YEAH a good adaptation depends a lot on his writing). You don't really understand what is his connection with Christine, and how his initial sympathetic scenes kinda clash with his more violent streak (he gets thrown acid in the first place because he kills a man pre-Phantom); making the character come off as a little inconsistent and not as sympathetic as he should be. This movie also started the "disfigured in an accident, no Persian" versions of Phantom that I feel kinda cheapen the story later on (a lifetime of tragedy is what shaped Erik, not "one bad day"). A real shame, because Rains carries an elegance to Erik that I think helps with the imagery of the character (a monster trying so much to be "human"). Hmm...6.5/10

-The 1962 with Herbert Lom. This one also changes a bit, and normally i'd be bitching and moaning about it, but i prefer the changes here to the Claude Rains version since they're more consistent in portraying Erik's character. You feel for his music being stolen, and want to see this artist have such a simple dream as seeing his creation come true. People don't like it erases his obsession with Christine, but i think here it works, since you can believe his passion for his art is what drives him. (Also, i think this movie is what started the trend of Phantom adaptations having another villain, which is something explored better in Phantom of the Paradise). It doesn't look as nice as the Claude Rains film, tho, and something in the acting stops it from going the most. 6/10

-Phantom of the Paradise: A BLAST. It changes a lot about the source material, but considering even the setting is different, everything works to its advantage. Winslow is the first Phantom that really delves well into the "tragic monster" element of the character, with even his violent tendencies being a consistent trait from the start of the story (he attacks Philbin for making an inoffensive comment about the Juicy Fruits). The imagery is distinctive, Swan is a very compelling villain, and the songs are fantastic. Winslow's sacrifice, like Lindsay Ellis said, is simply a progression from his acts in the novel (yes, I believe Erik would sacrifice himself to guarantee Christine's safety, post development). What only sucks is that I don't feel you buy Winslow's passion for Christine / Phoenix, and she comes off as inconsistent in her ambition and not as empathetic (still, she sings very nicely and I love that the actress resembles Mary Philbin (1925 Christine) at times). Also while the Faustian elements add to the movie, i'm not sure how they can relate to Erik's' character in general (not to mention the Dorian Gray element). Also the pacing in the last 10 minutes is rushed and kinda sucks. But still...As a movie? It's my favorite. 9/10

-The Maximilliam Schell 1983 made for TV film: My least favorite, and it all has to do with how slow and dull the pacing is, you just don't get the sense of dread or tragedy. The reincarnated wife subplot is really random, and it makes Sandor pathetic and delusional instead of empathetic and tragic. And i'll take bad over boring any day of the week. 2/10

-ALW's musical (add here the 25th version too): Oh ho ho, the one piece of media that got us all into Phantom I think. It's a big, bombastic musical, and you can see the appeal. While i don't like some characters are turned more one-dimensional (Raoul, Christine); I do like how it pushes forward Erik's trauma, and how it has broken him; he's not a good man, no, but not a monster, either. And this idea that abuse victims can turn cruel as well...But, you know, they still deserve love. Perhaps they always did! And the focus on the romance which puritans complain about...Boy you will not be ready to hear me when i tell you the original novel implies Christine is indeed into both Raoul and Erik, for different reasons lol. I dont like the omission of the Persian, but I like that this cements that again, Erik wasn't a rando who one day snapped, it was a life of tragedy that turned him into what he is....We can dislike it, we can like it, but we can admit it has influenced our perception of the story in more ways than one. 8/10.

-The 1988 cartoon: The most faithful adaptation of the novel is also the cheapest movie of the bunch. Whew lads...Tho I do like Erik's character. He's got the redemption, the deformity, the sense of humor (when i read Erik i often headcanon him having this Erik's voice). I also like Christine, she's not written as a bland damsel, she shows a bit of an attitude. And hey, rare Persian appearance! I even like the ending, with the cast showing compassion towards Erik's misfortune. It's just that the technical limitations of the movie avoid the film from reaching high status. 6.5/10

-1989 with Robert Englund: An unpopular opinion, but I love this film. It's strange in that it's both very faithful to the novel, adapting the gothic horror of the elements, but it changes way too much Erik's character (the crux of the story) into somebody who isn't really tragic or sympathetic. A musician who sells his soul to the devil (an element it took from Phantom of the Paradise...I have the theory that Phantom adaptations take elements from each other more than from the novel) and gains immortality...and kills people for no reason??? Normally, in another adaptation, I would dislike a lot this change, but Englund's interpretation turns the character into more layers than simply a psychopathic asshole. He gets the "allure" and horror of Erik, which is a big part of the character. I feel with a more book accurate backstory, and impulse more the angle of "doomed dark lover" with Christine (yes his love is also...downplayed), this would easily be one of the more popular Eriks. Yeah it steals a lot from Nightmare on Elm Street, but there's an interesting movie in here, amidst the music and the beautiful cinematography...8/10.

-The 1990 miniseries with Charles Dance: Cherik! The phandom darling! This one is strange since i feel it diverges from the novel as much as the Robert Englund version, yet it's one of the most beloved adaptations. It offers an interesting interpretation of Erik, he's not as cruel, but the movie delves more into the aspect of him being a doomed romantic lover. He's not as manipulative to his Christine (i'd argue this is one version of the story where they should've gotten together imo), and has a gentler approach to life. The series takes the element of the book of him having arrested development and runs with it. Still tho, the gentler approach kinda cuts the tragedy of the character; what with loving parents and all being something Erik DIDNT have growing up. The appearance of the father is what dulls the film, and makes Erik come off as more dependent and childish. Still, Charles Dance gives his Erik a quiet dignity, that avoids the character falling into a manchild interpretation. 7/10 (not bad, just that i like my Eriks more lonely and threatening)

-The 1998 film of Dario Argento: Y'all owe Gerard Butler an apology, lol. This is the ONE truly shit adaptation of Phantom, lol. It feels like a fever dream. It's more gross than scary, it's not tragic, it's not romantic, Erik is not in any way sympathetic or complex or alluring...Like the fuck lol. 3/10 (and that 3 is because it makes me laugh...)

-Wishbone "Pantin' at the Opera" episode: Eh, "Phantom for kids", not a interpretation of the story I like, but it's accurate to the novel, which makes it stand out. And it gives Erik a rare happy ending! Tho, as expected since it's for kids, it downplays a lot of the more complex themes. Still...gotta praise the accuracy. 5/10

-2004 with Gerard Butler: I don't think it's as bad as the phandom made it out for years. It could be better, but i think the technical details and the bad makeup are what drag the film down, since it doesn't diverge massively from the story or themes (except the weird grooming thing...ew). This Erik is interesting in that much like Cherik, he grew up inside the Opera House, and it's an unique view of the character, that he's got arrested development due to never leaving his own "house" growing up (a bit of a plot hole then how he learned magic, engineering, architecture, etc etc, but eeeeh). He's also more vulnerable and emotional compared to the stage counterpart, who seems more self assured and angry. It's not horrible, just average, and could be better. 6.5/10

-The cartoon episode of the Triplets with Phantom (aired in the 2000s-something): Phantom for kids again. it's not an interpretation of the story in general that i like (too fluffy for my liking), but this episode gets the points of the story; Christine's complex feelings and Erik's redemption, while still keeping his initial wickedness (he even gets a sorta happy ending! my boy!). also it's funny at times, so there's that. 6/10

-Love Never Dies: This is...frustrating. I'm of the unpopular opinion that a sequel focused on Erik can work, but I feel his story with Christine is over, and dragging it back again just places the characters in square one, their development null. As an original story, it can be a potential good drama, but with these established characters, a lot of the emotions feel forced and manufactured. 5/10

So overall...My favorite versions of Erik and the story are...the musical and Chaney? And Paradise and Robert Englund for the wild out there versions. But there's always something missing, i can't always point to one and go "THAT is the definitive Erik". Erik is a very complex character, made of light and shadows, and the movies never reflect that.

I don't think most of these movies are good, we like them because they're Phantom content, but still, it's interesting to observe how this story has changed reflecting the interests of society at the time being. Before, we wanted this cruel monster punished...Then we turned him into an 80s slasher...And now in the monster fucker era we see him as a potential romantic lead...Huh.

Still thinking about it after a few days, but the way SMG4 acted towards Mr Puzzles at the end till he sent him flying was something ive been waiting to see him do for a while.

Cuz a lot of people didnt really see it or pointed it out, but SMG4 doesnt just have an explosive anger, but a side of him that rarely comes out until its really serious and the situation, whatever that might be, is dire.

And that is his cold angry side.

We saw it first on the Revelations movie, when Melony was supposedly dead by Zero.

That part where he legit felt so much anger he WANTED THE WORST TO HAPPEN TO THE ONE THAT HURT HIS FRIEND.

HE LEGIT WANTED THE GOD BOX BLOWN RIGHT AWAY.

And thats a cold, legit insane quote that still gives me shivers to this day.

Now we saw it again when he was running towards Puzzlevision too. The cold obscured stare till he grabs Luigi and SWINGS HIM SO VIOLENTLY TOWARDS THE TV HEAD. BRO WAS DEFENLESS, AND HE DIDNT EVEN HESITATE.

The way the others looked at him kinda shocked and a bit fearful maybe?

I want more of that side of Four. Cuz like Mr Puzzles said. He acts nice now, but deep down, he can be a real villain if he wants to.

Good thing tho, all of this has shown up when his friends are hurt, so yeah, i love how hes ruthless to the ones that hurt his friends x3

2. He has told Annabeth “what if i’m actually a really terrible person and i’ve just manipulated everyone into liking me?”

Percy disassociates sometimes, especially in triggering situations, and Annabeth and Percy were at a restaurant once when a guy accidentally bumped into a waiter and she dropped all the dishes she was carrying and they broke. The sound of the glass breaking immediately made Percy disassociate and shut down. Annabeth got super freaked out.

11. Annabeth is a night owl, Percy is constantly exhausted, so Annabeth is always up way later than Percy and she loves looking at him sleep (not in a creepy way lol) because he looks so peaceful and young and it’s very different from how stressed and anxious he usually looks

12. Percy once accidentally knocked over and broke one of Annabeth’s bowls and he immediately apologized and started cleaning it up (scraping his hands in the process.) Annabeth had to reassure him for hours later that she wasn’t mad at him and that she understood it was just an accident.

13. Annabeth is gonna be the main “breadwinner” in the family once they grow up and have kids and stuff, but Percy is still gonna work bc he can’t stand the idea of being “financially dependent” on someone (even though in a marriage and healthy relationship, if they are the breadwinner, their money is also kinda you’re money yk (i explained that badly but ykwim))

14. Annabeth doesn’t care how many kids they have but Percy wants at least 2 bc if they only have 1 then the kid will be lonely

15. When Annabeth is mad at him she tries to be rational and deal with it in a healthy way but sometimes she’ll lose her temper (she’s not exactly the MOST patient person) but when Percy is upset with her he shuts down and refuses to talk about it

16. Annabeth works on being patient with Percy and trying to get him to talk to her about his feelings but sometimes she gets fed up and annoyed with him and it makes him close himself off even more

17. Annabeth has nightmares about Percy in Tartarus sometimes. Percy knows and feels terrible about it.

18. Hazel and Frank starting secretly taking pictures of Annabeth and Percy doing normal couple things (cuddling, holding hands, literally js looking at each other lovingly, etc.) and posted the pictures to Pinterest (Frank had to teach Hazel how pinterest worked) and now Percabeth is pinterest famous without even knowing

19. Annabeth can cook but not extremely well. like she has basic levels of cooking but she’s WAY better at baking. Percy is the chef. But they also set up a system every week once they move in together (Annabeth’s idea) where Monday, Thursday, and Saturday Percy cooks; Tuesday and Sunday Annabeth cooks or does something. And then Friday they order take out or go somewhere. At first it stressed Percy out cs he wasn’t used to having the money to go out for dinner and he felt like he was wasting money but Annabeth helped him get used to the idea. They also bake together a lot.

20. Percy’s love language is physical touch but it’s also words of affirmation. He is also one of those people who gives amazing compliments but at the most random times (i.e. Annabeth could be working on homework wearing pjs and Percy will randomly tell her that she has gorgeous eyes or that she’s the best person he’s ever met and Annabeth loves it.) Annabeth’s love language is acts of service and gifts. She’s ALWAYS getting Percy some type of gift and wants to do stuff for Percy. It took Percy some getting used to the gifts cs he felt like he was supposed to repay her in some way but then he realized that she didn’t want him to repay her.

21. They both get each other new flowers every single week because Percy LOVES flowers and he loves looking at them and smelling them. He loves everything about them. Percy used to get Annabeth flowers every single week but Annabeth realized how much he loves flowers so she started getting him some too. Their house has 2 new bouquets every week and it’s awesome.

22. Annabeth asked Percy to move in after college and Percy was js like “i thought we were already doing that?”

23. Annabeth DESPERATELY wanted a dog so Percy got her one on their first wedding anniversary (an Australian shepherd puppy (they later get a golden retriever puppy for their oldest))

24. They ended up having 3 children. the oldest is exactly like Percy, the middle is like a perfect mix, and the youngest is exactly like Annabeth.

25. Annabeth was really worried and scared about being a parent (Percy was too but he tried not to bring it up too much cs he knew that Annabeth needed support)

26. They DO NOT go the harry potter approach and name all their kids after their dead friends. They were just NORMAL and chose names they thought were pretty or cute. (they landed on something like Haley, Katarina, and Charlie (cs Percy IS a bit too much like harry potter to resist.))

27. The wedding was super beautiful and happened on a lakefront (not at camp.) Percy and Annabeth did all of the planning together (they had some input from Hazel, Piper, and Frank.)

28. Percy decided he wanted to be a firefighter but then he got extremely injured so he had to stay home for a few months and he was a stay at home dad (he was MISERABLE.) Afterwards, he was having trouble deciding if he wanted to go back to being a firefighter or if he wanted to be a teacher. Annabeth said that she would feel better if he was a teacher because it would be a less life-risking job. Then Percy became a teacher, but stopped a few years later and went back to firefighting. Once he retired from that (when he was like 58) he went back to teaching AGAIN. 😁👍 He’s like barbie.

29. They are one of those couples who are constantly touching but not in a big pda way. They both weren’t exactly raised to show a ton of affection in public, so they don’t kiss or cuddle that much in public. However, they are constantly touching somehow (i.e. holding hands, legs close together, etc.)

Okay, so I liveblogged my reactions to reading LOTR; now I'm watching the movies and figured I'd share my reactions.

(I had planned to wait a bit before watching the movies, but I keep seeing screenshots that make me think different elements are pulled out and emphasized, and I'm fascinated to see how they take the same base story and present it in this different medium. So here I am. XD)

The Fellowship of the Ring

Ooh, I like the narrator lady's voice.

Is that an orc? They're terrifying!

Also, Sauron looks less terrifying than my mental image while reading the books showed.

I fear I might get jumpscared by Gollum. The way he flicked his head around? And they got the glow of his eyes so well!

(Also, it's so fitting that LOTR starts with several minutes of backstory infodumping. I think Tolkien would've been disappointed by anything less. XD)

Ahhhhhhh the hobbits seem extra charming!

"If you're referring to the incident with the dragon, I was barely involved." OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH THAT'S A LOTR QUOTE!!

Ahhhhhh the Nazgûl are so creepy! I mean, I knew they were creepy in the books too, but they feel extra creepy now that I see them on screen.

Ahh! Got jumpscared by Gandalf. (I'm easily startled.)

Oooh! I was hoping they'd do this—mix in the scenes with Gandalf's meeting with Saruman instead of him just recapping it much later. I felt as I read the books that it would have been better pacing (or at least, I should say, better pacing to my modern sensibilities as a reader—I shouldn't assume that the original audience back then consumed media exactly the same way as people do now).

I need to rewatch part of this scene again because all I can do is chuckle at Merry-Go-Gandalf.

Annnnnnd just got startled by Merry and Pippin. X'D

My goodness they got to Bree quickly! *flashes back to weeks of reading* I feel that a lot of characterization got skipped over, but also, the movies may find other ways to thread that in—plus it may take a slightly different spin on the characters.

(Am slightly disappointed that Merry and Pippin did not get nearly eaten by a tree. Pity, that.)

But also, that lower, hobbit-sized window in the door? PRECIOUS!

SECOND BREAKFAST SCENE YESSSSSSSS

Hmm. The orcs are smaller than I'd imagined. (Still quite scary tho) Though I guess to a hobbit they would seem quite a bit larger.

I had wondered if Aragorn was going to look too kingly to pull of the Strider side of him, but he does it quite well!

The working conditions in Isengard are not OSHA compliant.

Oh, that's a— that's a big scary orc!

Arwen! I was not expecting that. Like, at all. (Movie Arwen is so epic. I love her.)

Ahhhhh! One does not simply walk into Mordor!

The Council of Elrond is much more chaotic than in the books. XD

AHHHH Bilbo gave me a half jumpscare there.

Their journey seems so much less cold and miserable in the movies compared to the books. XD

OSHA violations. OSHA violations everywhere. (I know they don't have OSHA there but I'd like to think they had a Middle Earth equivalent with the exact same requirements anyway because it adds a significant layer of mirth to the situation, so we are moving forward under the assumption that they do.) Look at this. Look at it.

I know Saruman is tall, but that guardrail can't be the required 42 inches. And I highly doubt that he filed the necessary paperwork for an exemption.

OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH How did I miss the significance of the password being "Friend" in Elvish? Because it's a dwarven mine but the elves were friends—the way the movie hovered on Gimli for a second there made it hit me like a ton of bricks because I started wondering, "I wonder what this means for him?" I love how different storytelling forms can draw things out!

(Adding in a parenthetical while circling back after the first movie ended—I do wish they'd put a little more focus on Legolas and Gimli's relationship changing. But even so.)

CAVE TROLL JUMPSCARE! (Yes, yes, I know, I totally expected that... but it scared me nonetheless. I fear I would not do well watching a horror movie.)

The dwarves also have no regard for Middle Earth OSHA. No handrail at all on that bridge??

Also, THIS was much closer to my mental picture of the scene (prior to reading LOTR) than the book had. Perhaps I've seen enough screenshots over the years that it worked its way in. XD

I wasn't sure at first what I thought of Aragorn knowing that Frodo was going off alone and sending him off. But after thinking it over, I think that him letting the great source of power go away fits within the thematic context of the movie very well. That, and the fact that the movie has fewer layers of complexity surrounding their route make it just make sense that they handled it this way.

And also, it's twice now that I've cried during the death of Boromir.

I really like the way The Fellowship of the Ring ended here—I mean, yes, it's the same as the book. But the pacing and cinematography was great!

Also, beautiful credits music.

Overall, I really enjoyed this adaptation. It does remove some complexity, but it also adds some other details and complexities that the books just gloss over entirely. If I were looking for a 1:1 copy, I would probably find myself disappointed by the movies. But as it is, I'm happy as long as a movie holds true to the spirit of the source material. I think that the movies nicely take and build upon the themes of the books in a way that makes sense for the storytelling medium. And that's a good adaptation.

(Watched some scenes from the extended edition the next day. The extra scenes definitely hit on some of the character moments more! I like the tiny bits it shows between Legolas and Gimli.)

With the elephant being just a little bit agitated, people are falling left and right, even without being shot first. Simply poor form in terms of personnel management—believe it or not, if your people are dying without the enemy even needing to be involved, it reduces your numbers. *mind blown*

I know some people dislike any deviation from the books, but I'm quite intrigued by Aragorn going cliff jumping. I honestly don't have any guesses about how or when he'll return, but I'm riveted.

One thing this is doing really well is showing the ugliness of war—especially as children are being outfitted with armor.

Was not expecting elves, not gonna lie.

(To be fair, they might actually have a pass as it's clearly meant for military use, and the military does not answer to OSHA. Saruman and the Dwarves, however, do not have a pass. Isengard might have raised up an army, but it was not a legal military entity.)

I'm not sure I like movie Faramir. His whole thing was not wanting the ring, y'know?

Oh, okay, good, he passed the test, all is good, he's a solid dude after all. Still prefer book Faramir.

The Return of the King

(I'm watching the extended edition right off for this one. Four hours, twenty-three minutes, five seconds, let's GOOOOOOOO!)

The speed of how fast Smeagol was corrupted really puts into perspective how long Frodo and even Boromir held out.

(Also they way I felt during that whole bit of his backstory is proof that I REALLY wouldn't do well in horror movies X'D)

Oh good. I would've been disappointed if they'd cut out the scene with Merry and Pippin greeting them.

Sam is the MVP for sure. (Well, either Sam or Gollum's well-placed, ever-present loincloth. It has served us well.)

I can really feel for Elrond here. He wants nothing more than to protect Arwen, but she will never be happy if she lives an eternity of regret. </3 But she's his child.

Hmm, wonder what Pippin's up to.

If I was trying to do a sneak attack, I would simply not have torches lit. They don't even need that many torches. It's just for the vibe. (No trust me I'm on the edge of my seat here; just had to get that thought out.)

Poor Faramir :( Denethor's hateable side is really coming out here. Even the cinematography zooming in on the nice meal he's having in the safety of his castle while sending his son to likely death. Excellently done.

Oof, I would simply Not Sleep There. I mean, I sleep on a top bunk without a rail every night, but the stakes are much lower.

Gollum driving Frodo and Sam apart really adds to the tension (and hurts my heart!)

"War is the province of men, Éowyn." Mmmm, I love a good conversation where the people are talking about one thing but really talking about another.

Slightly disappointed that Merry isn't going to spend the two-day ride thinking Éowyn is some bloke named Dernhelm. But the smile of realization and the "My lady" made up for it.

You know, until I finished reading the books last month, I had NO IDEA that ghosts played such a pivotal role in LOTR. Or any role, actually. It just never made it into the spoilers.

Almost-buried-in-skulls is another LOTR thing I never knew about.

I actually didn't expect them to do the heads catapult thing in the movies. Another case of showing the horrors of war well!

Go Gandalf! (Seeing someone beat up Denethor is quite satisfying.)

See, an orc just fell off the side of that siege tower without even encountering battle. Why? No handrail. (Again, Middle Earth OSHA doesn't have jurisdiction here since it's an army, but even so, this is why there ought to be better safety systems all around.) AND THEN some soldiers of Gondor fell too! Handrails, people, HANDRAILS!

YESSSSSSS I was worried for a few minutes there that the movie would gloss over Sam's moment of glory. I worried in vain!

(Watched through the entire rest of the battle with no recorded reactions because I was too busy being riveted and sometimes crying, so now I'm at the part with the orcs fighting in the tower and I SWEAR next time I watch this, I'm going to do a preventable-fall-death count.

Poor Sam. His whole role in the movie is running up stairs for Frodo.

One scene to break us all

I grew up on Star Wars. I'm more of a new era fan, with prequels being always a part of it. Also, as a kid I was watching Clone Wars series on television. It definitelly made both my idea of the world and humor more dark than psychologist would consider healthy, although I have my own opinion on refusal to expose children to tough themes in media, but thats not what I want to write about. I want to write about a scene that I can't really recall having much interested in when I watched it as a kid yet now, I can watch it over and over with tears crumbling every time I see it.

Why didn't it affect me? Affect us? Why was it that in the past it felt like an exposition? We can account it to my small brain not really comprehending what's going on, waiting for a cool duel between Anaking and Obi-Wan among the fires of hellish landscapes. But I think there can be a deeper cause. One that was explained in quote accounted to Joseph Stalin. "One death is tragedy, thousand is a statistic"

Execution of Order 66, without any Star Wars uniwerse background, is about the scale of events that happens in the movie. I heard that scenes used in that sequence were primarly planned to be at the begining of the movie to showcase scale of Clone Wars, notify a viewer about how all of galaxy is raging in fights between clones and droids. They scrapped that idea and used it to showcase the scale of Palpatine's victory over Jedi: all around the galaxy, with one sentence, Sith Lord wiped out hole Jedi Order we came to know thruout the prequel trilogy. That's what I mean by exposition. It's shocking and terrifing on it's own, but ultimatly, those were just the events. Emotional weight was put in the Jedi temple.

So what changed? Why is it now that I watch order 66 I can't help but shed at least one tear?

As I said, I was watching Clone Wars on television. But it was occasional, when I have the time and hit the right channel at the right time type of watching back then. Then I watched it preety much from beggining to an end when I was a bit older, but it still didn't feel that close to home, as it was way back when it was still ending on Yoda and his little journey. Even then tho it already altered my perception of the movies.

Then came the time, the year 2020, everyone will remember as the year pandemic hit. But fans will know it was also a year of the finale release, Clone Wars season 7, featuring phew side plot-lines, Echo, Bad Batch, martez sisters and Darth Maul. But most importantly, it finally got to that point. It finally allowed us to hear "Execute order 66" in the show. And as it did, it did justice to what Order 66 represents. The end of an Era.

By connecting the Clone Wars show, by putting it right into the events of ROTS, it symbolically made all of that happen thru out the show part of the Prequel Trilogy for good.

Now we don't see sexy, blue alien chick getting blasted in the back. We see Ayla Secura, kind yet tough master that helped carrying Anakin after he took explosion onto his chest, getting shot multiple times by Commander Bly.

We don't see weird looking brown Jedi getting shot down by clone pilots on some airy planet, we see Master Plo Koon, the one that brought Ahsoka to Jedi Temple, dying before he could blink.

We don't see a long headed man, concerned about wookies in previous scene, confused at clones. We see Ki Adi Mundi, man that almost died in the second invasion on Geonosis and bickered around with Anakin and Ahsoka, terrified of the sight and feeling that his clones are out here to kill him.

Thousand deaths is a statistic. It's the exposition of scale. It's how the history is written in the book. The war took thousand of innocent lives. That is important on it's own. But you won't cry over it. You will cry over a death of the ones you cared about. Over the ones you got to know.

At the beggining, when I said about watching Order 66 scene, I lied a bit. I ment watching the extended edit, fan made, connecting all the scenes happening in the universe that were ever made for screen. I'm still waiting for any cinema to release the Revenge of the Sith movie that starts from that episode in season 7 Clone Wars, then follows both story lines of Anakin and Ahsoka together and when it gets to Order 66, it puts all the scenes possible, even cut scenes from Jedi Fallen Order, as it too crushed my heart, when I realised what's going on when Kal high fived a clone on his way.

Order 66 started as a statistic about thousand deaths. Years have passed however, allowing us to witness characters truly involved in it to the point where the scene, being not far from two decades old now, is more heartbreaking than ever before.

Taste in books i think each of the sides on Sander Sides would have

Logan: Easiest side to tell since he says his book taste in canon lmao, mistery books guy, agatha christie, sherlock holmes, murders on rue morgue, he just really enjoys a good mistery (he’s just like me fr). He also probably reads books about scientific discoveries and psychological studies on a day to day basis (since he seems to have an answer for everything), either really likes or really hates sci fi depending on the scientifical explanations the books gives

Patton: Ok so, im gonna be honest, i don’t think Patton reads much? In fact hes probably the one who reads the least out of all sides, but he does seem to know his stuff, quoting studies in some episodes ( ‘Can lying be good?’ being the one who comes to mind ), so he probably reads a few articles about Morality and philosophy, also when i imagine Patton reading i imagine children’s books with deep messages like Dr Seuss, so personally i think Patton’s taste in books would be books like “The Tao of Pooh” which explains philosophy in a simple fun way taking inspiration from children’s media.

Roman: Roman’s my favorite side and although i would like to dump my personal taste on him i am aware that he canonically hasn’t read my favorite book and dislikes dark retellings of fairytales, leaving me to tears since those are my favorite kind of story. However i will indulge a bit and say that Roman would love Shakespearean plays ( His favorite would be Hamlet bc it inspired Lion King ) and typical fantasy books. Im also 100% sure that guy has a shelf full of Disney Movie Books like the novelization of Beauty and the beast and the villain’s origin books by Serena Valentino, also has those super pretty Disney Classics books ( lucky mfer ). And obviously he would have the original novels of multiple musicals ( Wicked, Be more chill, Dear Evan Hansen…) and some ballets/non-Disney classics as well (The nutcracker, The wizard of oz, Swan lake… ). Also Harry Potter i guess, since that’s canon 😒

Virgil: We all know what im going to say, Horror fan. Likes Edgar Allan Poe’s stories and classic horror books that inspired movies/series ( Carrie, Ring, the haunting of hill house… ), also reads a concerning amount of True crime about unsolved murder cases, and he has a special edition of the novel of The nightmare before Christmas somewhere trust me. And to self indulge a little, Dark retellings of fairytales, especially the Horror leaning ones.

Janus: I feel like Patton would read simplified philosophy books while Janus would grab shit like The gay science by Friedrich Nietzsche at the local library (never read this book, hilarious title tho), Overall i think Janus’s taste on books would consist of either philosophy and sociology books (especially the ones that annoying people read to keep gloating about how smart they are, except he actually likes them), and influential plays like Shakespeare, The Odyssey, The Iliad, Medea, Phantom of the Opera etc… His taste is the perfect combination of annoying Theater kid with pretentious philosophy kid (He is the guy they strive to be 😭)

Very simple, Dark romance and horror, the books are his inspirations for new creative ways to annoy the shit out of the other sides, he is slowly but surely making a list of new horrid murder and torture methods he learned via horror books, also dark romance for him is just romance since he thinks normal romance books are boring and lack taste, some other side definitely walked in on him reading once ( picture him reading on the sofa twirling his hair and bouncing his legs in a very stereotypical teen girl way ) and asked what he was reading only for him to answer something like “ ‘Taken Hostage by the Hot Mafia Boss’ :D” Also definitely read the Kam4 Sutr4.

Bonus: Remy/Sleep has a book detailing the multiple different ways on how to brew coffee and Picani has every Kids Show Book he could find ( Gravity Falls 3rd Diary, Star vs the Forces of Evil Book of spells etc… )

MY THOUGHTS ON THE MIRACULOUS LADYBUG MOVIE

Felt more balanced, I really liked the push and pull of both of them, especially how they were more like rivals in this depiction (can u tell i like my rivals to lovers)

Both were sort of equal here compared to the show, whereas in the show Ladybug is oftentimes the one who can do everything without Cat Noir, it was nice to see more CN appreciation <3

to save one person is to save the world? UM...okay...good quote if you don't think about it too much...or at all

marinette solved all her problems and fixed all her character flaws by singing one song

like, it was mildly engaging, but i kinda got whiplash with how fast the plot progressed, like i was watching the world collapse in front of me in a matter of seconds - not sure what went wrong, but it just left me wanting more and feeling like there could be gaps filled

anyways, what can i expect for a movie that has to cram an entire origin story and final battle in 1.5 hours

ended in a way that made me happy tho :)

FINAL THOUGHTS

it was fine... animation & music was solid, but the plot felt kinda mid to me...TBH EVERYTHING IS MID COMPARED TO SEASON FIVE
