I’ve been in fandoms long enough to see this happen in real time.

I’ve been a Sherlockian FOREVER and greatly admire Jeremy Brett’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in his series from the 80’s. Thing is, the man was never public about his sexuality but enough people who knew him are still/were around and have confirmed that he was, at the very least, bisexual, but most likely gay. (He did marry two women but he left the first one for a man (!) and speculation is he married the second for a green card but did actually care for her.) Anyhow, my point is in spite of this fairly common knowledge, as late as 15-ish years ago even hinting he might have been gay would get you kicked out any discussion group (ask me how I know 😏) Nowadays it would probably be NBD.

And we all saw what happened with BBC SHERLOCK (fuck you Mofftiss!) Funny thing with that is, Mofftiss could have gone down in history by making John and Sherlock openly a couple, but decided to squander that opportunity by mocking the fans who wanted that to happen. (Again, fuck you Mofftiss) My pet theory is that when they started out they actually were planning to make the leads a couple but when the series became a monster hit and all of the cash from homophobic countries started rolling in, they chickened-out and started denying that fans were seeing what they were definitely seeing. So now, instead of being forever known as the proud creators of a ground-breaking series, Mofftiss are instead known as creators of the most egregious example of queerbaiting ever seen on TV. Good job, guys (slow clap).

So here we are now, 10 years later, where David Jenkins said, fuck it, imma make a romcom about gay pirates, and if anyone doesn’t like it, they can go fuck themselves. By doing so, he’s not only destroyed the opportunity for other showrunners getting away with queerbaiting (thank The Great Maker) but raised the bar for how gay characters should be treated. You know, as just people, with good and bad qualities and just as deserving of a Happily Ever After as the zillions of het couples on the hallmark channel have gotten.

So, I’m still side-eyeing other showrunners to see if they have the cojones (or ovaries) to Step Up and quit kowtowing to homophobic countries and just treat their gays properly. We’ll just have to wait and see.

i immediately started sobbing. i truly can’t put into words how special Our Flag Means Death is to me. but, i’m going to attempt it anyway.

i was trying to figure my sexuality during the height of my fandom days. being mocked by the cast and creators of shows that were actively queerbaiting us, only to have them try to make us sound stupid when we called them out on it. it really did not help. it fucking sucked.

i had to spoil OFMD for myself about half way through, because i couldn’t handle a show doing that to me again, and in 2022.

instead, i found a show that not only follows through, but whose show runners, cast, and crew celebrates the queerness surrounding it. embraces the fandom. loves the show as much as we do.

that is so fucking special to me.
