I think it's so impressive that so many people manage to make sense of the strange writing choices from the last episode and turn it into fics that work, but my brain is still so stuck on the whole Abby thing.
Can I accept that Buck apparently didn't really process or research his sexuality at all over the course of six months? Maybe, though it feels slightly ooc
Can I accept that Tommy is apparently so hurt and traumatized that he'd rather run than listen to Buck? Maybe, though after six months and consistantly showing him to be very attentive and an open communicator, it also feels a bit ooc
But then the Abby thing? Which doesn't make sense for so many reasons? And the fact that they never talked about exes or their past or their identity after six months?
It's just a lot to swallow over the course of two super short scenes without any kind of build up 😭
#bucktommy#and i know that they didn't have a lot scenes beforehand#but what they did show us especially in 8x05 felt so different 😭#and from a bts perspective it was such a compelling relationship with so many opportunities for storylines#i think i'm still processing everything#but their choices are so strange 🤷♂️#i am trying to come up with any kind of scenario of where they want buck to end up that doesn't involve a relationship like this#and none of them work as well as this one

#'sorry for barging' anon#sorry gonna answer this in the tags since it's such a loaded topic#but yeah exactly- i think a lot of it comes down to people wanting them to perform their (very real) grief for an audience#and getting mad when they don't. which is wildly unfair and unrealistic and just... extremely entitled#and very much coming from a lack of understanding of grief and that it's not a perpetual state of uncontrollable crying#a massive part of grief is continuing living with all its up and down moments with a new heavy weight in the background#living in a perpetual state of sobs is not something any human can sustain. it involves adapting and continuing to live.#and that involves doing regular everyday things AND experiencing happy moments still. that does not mean you aren't still suffering.#to question whether they're 'truly' grieving is.... kinda evil and completely ridiculous lmao#and shows a massive lack of basic empathy and understanding of how human emotions work#we see less than 1 percent of their lives. to actually feel like you have the ability to judge someone's grieving process in general#is wild and weird but especially when you literally have seen nearly none of their lives in the past few months#i'm sure all of us have laughed and seen a friend and had other happy moments since october#that doesn't mean we do not miss liam and that we aren't devastatingly sad at other points.#and to somehow think that zouis reconnecting and being happy about it after such a tragic event would be somehow anti-liam is insane#i've even seen people judge zayn for not cancelling his entire tour which is so.....#if they for a second think that liam would have been petty enough to enjoy the idea of all of his friends stopping in their tracks forever#they clearly didn't really know him since he was clearly always SO supportive of everyone in 1d#and probably would have been very happy to see zayn and louis mend their relationship#it feels like a very weird way to make a fucking death and real life grief from his friends into a stan war which is......... beyond gross

Tim Drake has a weird fucking function
The thing about Tim that I find unique is that his life became SO MUCH WORSE after joining the heroing thing. Everybody else had a mid-to-shit life before becoming a hero/living with Bruce and mostly everybody (except Jason who LITERALLY DIED) had their life improved by being a hero/being Bruce's kid (or at least it is typically portrayed as such.
Tim had the exact opposite trajectory. His life wasn't perfect before he became Robin, but like...multi-millionaire/billionaire (canon is unclear, but he's within Gotham's upper-strata) kid with both natural intelligence + charisma and a bright future ahead of him and parents who were emotionally neglectful but nothing really beyond that (which is also a form of trauma, but all of the info we have indicates that the Drakes were no Arthur Brown or David Cain) and he still had other people he could rely on outside of them. He went to boarding school, which could be something horrible OR something amazing depending on your own thoughts/experiences. I grew up having a commute where we'd drive past a really pretty and rich af boarding school that literally everybody in our area DREAMED of going to, so to me the idea of going to boarding school sounds incredible but mileage may vary. Tim seems like the type of kid who would thrive in that though. Based on what we know in canon atm, his pre-robin life was fucking amazing.
And then he starts being the sidekick and working towards becoming Robin. His parents immediately get kidnapped and poison themselves through drinking tainted water; his mom dies and his dad is in a coma. This is not the fault of Robin, but Tim himself muses about the idea that Robin and dead parents are linked: to become Robin completely, you must lose your parents. And with how fate/destiny/canon events can operate in comics universes, maybe he isn't that far off. Once his dad wakes up, their relationship becomes strained as the man grieves the loss of his wife and realizes that his son has been doing vigilantism as a hobby. It is unclear exactly how good of a parent Jack was before the incident, but the results of Tim's involvement with the Robin mantle has definitely made things worse between father and son. Jack will also die within quick succession of 2 of Tim's best friends, his girlfriend, and his other father. He will also effectively lose like 1/2 his loved ones in the fallout of all of that mess including: his older brother, his other friends (both civilian and superhero), and the stepmother with whom he shared what I would argue is his best parent-child relationship (Dana also may have died, but it's left unclear). He has stopped pursuing higher education (the moment he even applied for college he 'died', and it seems he hasn't made another attempt since) and if he wasn’t a major focus of the media before he sure is now. He tries to quit briefly (in fact he initially was planning on quitting once someone more suited came along) and cannot bring himself to do so. Even when he does manage to get away for a while, his superhero life impacts the pre-robin life he is trying to go back to. Leaving is an impossibility, this is all there is for him now. He also isn’t allowed to make mistakes anymore, not when lives hang in the balance. The one who enforces that impossible standard the most (besides Bruce depending on who's writing) is himself. He’s got TRAUMA now and people want to hurt him constantly. He is constantly questioning his own sanity and morality and place in the world. He almost dies like every month. Tim grows colder and less grounded, he is becoming both a better and a worse version of himself at the same time. He’s saving lives in the same few issues as he’s setting up a Saw movie plot for the man who killed his father. He is haunted by the ghosts of his past and the looming figure of his future. His life becomes SO MUCH FUCKING WORSE after he becomes Robin. Some of it is the fault of others, some is the fault of circumstance, and some of it is due to his own actions. But basically all of Tim's worst traumas and life-changing moments are either tied to or caused by Robin. Dick's parents would still be dead, Jason would still be living on the streets, Stephanie would still have Arthur Brown for a father and a lot of other things that deserve their own posts/IDK if they've been retconned, and Damian would still have been raised in the eco-cult where death is a constant. Those are life circumstances that occur without the involvement of Robin, the only one who even needs Bruce involved at all in their series of events is Damian. But Tim? All of what is considered his 'worst' moments occur after he assumes the role.
This idea is what I find the coolest and most fascinating about Tim as a character. Being a hero is usually portrayed as either an outright awesome thing or a righteous duty that one must fulfill or (maybe in a grimmer and/or more grounded story) a sacrifice to your interpersonal relationships/mental health that is made for the greater good. For Tim, being a superhero actively ruined his life (both because of the general circumstances surrounding being a kid vigilante and the choices he made as part of that role). It's never portrayed that way in canon because we need to come out of issues going 'wow being a superhero is so cool! I'm gonna buy the next issue!', but when you just look at Tim's life literally everything really bad that we know of occurred after he became Robin.
#tim drake#batman#batfamily#Red Robin 2009#Red Robin#idk this is just why I think Tim is a really interesting character. I'm probably not being as articulate as I could be but it's tumblr so#I've had a lot of people say that they think Tim is the most boring robin. And I disagree because I don't think any of them are boring#but it is definitely the hardest to explain what makes Tim interesting to people with only a cursory knowledge#and it doesn't help that a lot of what makes Tim cool relies on his relationships with OTHER characters.#like you can explain why Jason is cool and interesting without even mentioning Batman if you really want to.#with Tim you need a fucking relationship chart and like 11 asterisks whenever anything involving the 'Bruce is dead' era is involved#so I just felt like typing up why I think he can really work as an exploration of somebody who straight up got WORSE after heroing#granted it's never actually stated because DC needs to make money. and tbh the closest we've ever gotten is Red Robin 2009#which I feel is dubiously canon at best at this rate. was it retconned? did any of it happen in the current universe?

it's basically the same explanation as in the manga, but the anime has made it easier for me to understand what Kabru's beef is with the Touden siblings, and I think that explanation was really well done
#in the manga i was like 'he doesnt like them... because they give their money away??'#but here its much clearer. he doesn't like them because they just straight up funded an underground crime ring#and they didn't know and kabru knows they didn't know#but it's that lack of thought of what the consequences might be of their actions that he really doesnt like#and its such a nice breakdown of a complicated situation#because WE have spent the entire last season falling in love with these siblings and their autistic tendencies#but kabru's brand of neurodivergence is figuring out how people work and understanding social dynamics#he cares so deeply about the dangers a dungeon brings to the humans involved#and understanding how everyone inside and outside a dungeon does what they do and why#and then these two very capable tallmen siblings waltz into town... and they just dont give a shit#they're changing the social environment so much without giving it any thought. thats got to be incredibly grating#/I/ find it annoying when people wont think critically about things i love to think critically about!!#anyway. i love kabru. i love that we're going to start seeing more of him. love that the anime fans are going to fall in love with him too#if they havent already

So uh. MelDan ammirite? This (kinda) blew up on Insta and other socmed I use so ig I'mma upload this here too lol
It started as a crackship (and it's still is, I kinda like to jokingly them imagine them pretending to like each other but actually wanting to skin each other alive, a little ooc for both of them, but it's mostly just for fun) but rn I'm exploring the potential ""relationship"" through a more angsty lense.
No text version below
#hpma oc#hpma daniel#my art#magic awakened#daniel page#melly anderson#melly anscombe#OK SO#I think that there's many different ways these two could “work”#I could go with a safe route aka transfem!Daniel x Melly all cute and sweet#OOOOR I could make it angsty and potentially one sided#my current idea? Daniel knows Mel is a metamorphmagus and wants her to tell him who she really is#but Mel ofc doesn't really want that for many reasons#she doesn't feel comfortable sharing who she really is bc she doesn't want people to know the real her in general#if she tells Dan he'd pry more and he'd discover WHY she's pretending to be Melly and that's a no no#this frustrates Daniel to no end he's not even sure if Mel even likes him back sometimes#Mel feels bad for deceiving Daniel snd wants to be honest w him but she can't#although I do have somewhat of an idea why Mel would get involved w him like this I'm still trying to figure it out#(she's probably having a comphet phase + she feels lonely af and needs a distraction from everything + to move on from Melissa and Cass)#and maybe also Ivy? she avoids her several reasons despite feeling heartbroken to do so#real question is tho what does Dan even see in her lol#that's def smth I gotta think about lol#but yeah. it's not canon to any of my current universes it's just for some mindless fun

my one season 4 complaint is Where The Fuck Was Aneesa
#never have i ever#i really wish her and fabiola had stayed together them not working out didn't rlly serve any purpose to the plot for the new season#fabiola's new relationship was barely rlaborated upon. as expected.#and aneesa was basically written out she was barely even part of the group#plus that scene of them at the staircase talking about fab's robotics team. they still have so much chemistry and they were literally just#talking about robotics#i understand she's not a major character and she can't have a separate plotline to herself but she wasn't even involved in anyone else's#her and fabiola were cute together and she would've at least been part of the plot if they were still dating#allison was barely a character what was the point of writing some random new partner for fabiola when she already had a perfectly good#love interest#it just doesn't make sense to me. whi decided it would be a good idea for them to break up#was it just an opportunity to shove in a nonbinary character who had no personality and was just there as someone's s/o and call it#representation#cause there are Many better ways to have nonbinary rep than this#but ofc mindy kaling wouldn't give a shit about this.#n e ways for this support my nonbinary aneesa hc . it's real.#fabiola torres#aneesa qureshi#OR AT THE VERY LEAST SHE SHOULD'VE GOTTEN WITH PAXTON. SHE HAD THAT NICE HOT JOCK LINE AT THE END OF SEASON 3#im fabneesa 4 life but i would honestly be haply with her dating paxton. they're both cool and they'd be fun together. and she deserves a#nice hot jock boyfriend.

The thing about show!armand is that his great evil* wasn't about him obsessively doing anything he possibly could to keep Louis it was looking at Louis and thinking "maybe if you don't actually care very much about me I shouldn't burn my whole life down over you and your treasonous daughter I'm annoyed with." It didn't have to be any more vindictive than that. His baseline state is monstrous; he kills people in elaborate little plays every night for enrichment and group bonding. I definitely think he put a couple little extra vicious twists in there for the love spurned but really at the end of the day the worst of what he does to Claudia and Louis is withdrawing his protection and treating them like any other victims.
*season three pending
#contrast to episode five where absent any alternative louis is all he has and he's determined to make it work because the alternative is#sitting with the void (himself)#but the fail state of their relationship is so passive if he really had been like fine but i'm going to half ass directing it because the#material involved doesn't move me#would that have been so much better?#all he has to do is be like ok. i have standards actually and the wolves will descend#and then of course the lying and the gaslighting which is imo where the real relationship horror lives for them#press says iwtv#interview with the vampire

..... is this a safe space to admit i kinda really don't like that lucanis used to have a crush on viago
#okay these are about to be some real salty tags and they might sound insane#i just. there are other crows.#like as i look back on it it's a criticism i think i have with the whole game#that the structure of “faction contacts” basically forces everything involving that faction to involve the same two people#and for whatever reason it really bothers me with the crows specifically#idk a lot of it just feels kinda fan-servicey to me#like when i go back and read eight little talons i think viago calling lucanis “that demon of a grandson” -#- works a lot better if they don't really know each other like that. it makes the crows sound big!#like he knows OF him he's the grandson of the First Talon but he doesn't KNOW him#and for lucanis idk i just feel like it could have been any other crow boy and still serve the same purpose#and on top of that i feel like viago's characterized in the Wigmaker Job as a kind of a hard person to like#(i say this with love as a reader but in universe i get the feeling this guy is respected and feared but not particularly liked)#and i think it brings a lot to Teia's character that she's really into this spindly unpleasant pile of spikes and nerves who poisons people#in a way that i really don't buy that lucanis would#idk i just feel like it simplifies all three of their characters for the sake of -#“oohhh look at this player the one guy from the book you love likes the OTHER guy from the OTHER book you love ~worlds collide~”#thing. and as a certified viago teia and lucanis enjoyer i'm not a fan!#anyway#datv critical#i might expand on the faction contacts thing later bc i really feel like it's a Thing in this game#marie speaks#idk if any of this is coherent or makes sense but like. I NEED to know if i'm the only one who feels like this

I've read your stories, so well written! Which is what I want to talk about, HOW ARE YOU SO GOOD AT WRITING!?! Half of the words you use I have no idea existed! How can ya write an engaging story from looking at one sentence so quickly?! What are ya secrets?!
(If you have already answered a question like this, can ya link me?)
Thank you, my friend :3 I'm not that great, trust me haha. I'm just a turbo nerd with 20-ish years of books under their belt, that's why I'm relatively well-spoken. I'm also afflicted with an overactive imagination that helps keep me awake at night (among other things), which is how I'm struck with inspiration in the way that I am. (Seriously, I get writing/drawing ideas constantly, all throughout the day. I have docs I write them down in so I don't forget them)
I did answer a question like this before, but I don't mind answering it again just so I can offer another bit of writing advice that I consider very important:
Don't compare yourself to others. Well and truly, comparison is the thief of joy. Learn from others, yes. Read the classics, look up to the greats, dive into works that are lauded as masterpieces so you can grasp what works in storytelling and why. But, on the flip side, don't allow yourself to get discouraged while you do so (which might be easier said than done, granted). Envy and inadequacy are tragically common feelings every person grapples with, in every aspect of life, writing included. You might read something so great that you'll feel like a damn fool standing next to it. Don't let this happen. It's ok to feel bad; someone will always be better than us at something, for better or worse. But you can't let it drag you down. Use it as fuel for improvement. Compare to gauge your own strengths and weaknesses and find inspiration, not just to put yourself down. You'll never want to do anything if you do, because you'll think there's no point when you're not as good or beloved as someone else. Work hard, get better, do not be afraid to tell yourself "good job" - and, with all of this, do it for YOU. Write because it makes you happy. Don't chase trends to be popular and appease others, don't browbeat yourself because you don't measure up to someone "better". Just write what you want and improve your technique for your own sake. You can become the greatest writer in the world and still be miserable because you keep comparing yourself to someone else. The only person you can be is YOU. Take SOME measure of pride and joy in your own work, however good or bad it turns out to be. You'll never know peace or happiness otherwise
#i might be struggling with comparing myself to someone else currently... that might be why I felt like saying this haha#i have a story I want to write but I can't bring myself to do so anymore#because I read another story involving the same characters and it's so fantastic that I feel ashamed even wanting to do something myself#people on here literally refer to their work as a fucking bible and the writer as Jesus#how do I compete with that? What can I say that hasn't been said better? You know?#I feel like nothing I put out will even be half as good as that. So I just sit there all gloom and doom and... worthless#seriously my writing and works feel downright worthless compared to that shit#don't be like me kids. be happy with yourselves. don't compare too much.#it becomes a form of mental self-harm after a while and it doesn't do anyone any good#... Man I sound like a bummer lol. Seriously anon. Thank you for your kind words. They mean a lot to me#wish you the best of days my man you deserve it

DM, on getting together to talk about backstory stuff I have to have him build with me: I might need to ask a few more questions about Felix and also what drives him besides curiosity
me: is curiosity not enough??
also me: well the other major thing was supposed to be solving this mystery that I asked for your cooperation with six months ago and have never gotten any input on
#me building felix in 2022: this guy will be actively and strongly driven by curiosity so I can get him into pretty much any situation#dm: sure but what's he REALLY after. so I can figure out how to put him in a situation.#yeah I guess I wouldn't expect someone incapable of curiosity himself to recognize that as a valid driving force! my bad!!#he's NOSY and he's KIND and BRAVE. what more does he need!! haven't you ever seen a detective show! haven't you seen scooby doo!!#I mean I've finally sufficiently chewed upon the lad to figure out at least SOME of his underlying Stuff and what makes him tick#so I have a better and fuller understanding of various Whys of his behavior and a little more depth and nuance for choices#but like if you're looking for like... a lust for treasure or a revenge quest or something like that idk what to tell you dude lmao#a specific diagetic thing ABOUT felix is that he generally doesn't HAVE a more specific drive than This One Mystery; he's drifting#how about you work with the character you're given. while weaving your fictions. how about that.#man to be fair I reserve judgement on this backstory until we've at least talked about it but#I still really hate and resent that the one PC whose backstory needs a lot of involvement from the DM got stuck with this one#I don't WANNA let you do it. I don't trust you with it :')

there's an essay jumbled up in my brain about dunmeshi's beginning and how clever and deceptive it is as a sleight-of-hand trick that distracts the audience from the depth and scope of the worldbuilding and foreshadowing that's being set up the entire time by dangling zany characters and wacky dishes and biology fun facts in front of us, and how that serves to catch invested viewers off guard when those elements come to the forefront, but also how it works against it with other viewers wanting "more" and not seeing it because the plot bait isn't laid out up front
how people getting frustrated with the characters "not taking things seriously" is mirrored and refuted in the confrontation between Laios and Shuro. how the characters' attitudes aren't just a result of shallow low-stakes "comedy rules" where nothing matters, but are an extension of their personalities (Laios's nonstandard expression of emotions being offputting even to people he knows) and the world and social environment (adventurers being desensitized to death and injury because resurrection magic is commonplace). the way the party refers to "saving Falin" instead of "retrieving Falin's corpse," indicating that they still see her with full personhood, and how that phrasing leads to some readers/viewers believing that Falin is alive in the dragon's stomach, conscious of being slowly digested while the party carelessly fucks around "wasting time." how the weird tonal dissonance makes sense in-universe and yet is deliberately challenged more and more the deeper the party goes
all the character building and pieces of lore slowly weaving together the shape of the larger world, laying the groundwork for the major themes that will surface later. so much is right there in the "low-stakes" early episodes if you know what you're looking for (or pass the perception checks).
it can be so satisfying to see new viewers/readers pick up on the clues even in the earliest "simple" episodes, or notice new things and make connections yourself....and it can also be frustrating to see people dismiss oddities and dissonance as shallow or bad writing because they don't expect a "cooking anime" to have depth like that. why try to question and understand and peel back the layers when you don't expect there to be any layers?
why can't laios take things seriously for once?
#mypost#i'm majorly out of practice for doing any real critical cohesive writing lol#trying to put this into coherent words has been such a mess so here's a vague gesture at my thought process about it#it's both my favorite and the most frustrating thing to see#because i've seen SO MANY people say they dropped the show after a couple eps thinking they know what it's about and where it's going#a cute but ultimately unsustainable gimmick#people for whom the characters and the food/biology infodumping weren't enough of a hook#but i wouldn't change anything about the structure to put a more obvious plot hook in the beginning#because it would give the game away TOO much#i LOVE how the audience has to acclimate to the characters' attitudes about death#only for our assumption that it's all normal and fine in this world to be thrown back in our faces#how we're left to notice the winged lion appearing in statues and carvings and coins and armor in the background#long long before it's ever brought up as a real entity by the plot#the history of the kingdom laid out in plain view but nevermind that. magic painting food!#i've seen the language around falin and her resurrection cause so much confusion#but of COURSE the characters involved wouldn't directly say 'we need to get her corpse to revive it'#bc pragmatically they already understand that as their goal. it doesn't need to be stated out loud; it's just how this process works.#but also they don't SEE her as an object. a dead body.#they need to 'save her before she's digested.' 'the spell couldn't reach her in the dragon's stomach.' 'hang in there falin'#death isn't real to them. not really. and so it doesn't quite feel real to the audience either#not until they find her skull and that realization slams home#like......i keep comparing it to gravity falls#which is episodic and goofy in the beginning but also has a much more obvious plot hook to keep people interested#(a main character entering a secret bunker indicating that he's lying about his ignorance of the town's mysteries)#the main characters in gravity falls are AWARE that there is a mystery to be solved and are trying to find more information#but i don't think that approach would work as well for dm!#laios's goals were never that lofty. not until they HAD to be because the situation demanded it of him#it's the characters trying to solve one personal problem and finding themselves entrenched in something vast and dramatic#that they weren't even fully AWARE of when they set out. and we the audience are on that journey with them!#it's SUCH a good structure i wouldn't trade it for anything. but also. tragic to see people give up and dismiss it so fast.

"The division between the two families [the Woodvilles and the Nevilles] and their allies can be seen in the royal charters that they witnessed. Warwick, Rivers and Archbishop Neville of York, while serving as chancellor and afterwards, were fairly constant witnesses to royal charters and consequently often appeared together. This was not, however, the case for other family members and friends. From 1466 to 1469, if Scales or Woodville associates like Sir John Fogge, John Lord Audley or Humphrey Lord Stafford of Southwick witnessed royal charters, then members of the Neville group, such as John Neville, earl of Northumberland, or John Lord Wenlock would not, and vice versa. Discounting the ubiquitous Warwick, Rivers and Archbishop Neville, of the twenty-four charters issued between February 1466 and June 1469, twelve were witnessed by men associated with the Woodvilles, eight by men associated with the Nevilles and two were witnessed by no member of either group beyond the two earls at their heads and the archbishop; only two charters, both from 1466, featured associates of both families.
Such striking segregation of witnesses suggests that something more than simple convenience or availability was at play. [...] The evidence of these witness lists does show the extent of the split between the two groups from early in Edward's [first] reign and of the need for political society to work with that cleavage in the heart of the Yorkist regime."
— Theron Westervelt, "Royal charter witness lists and the politics of the reign of Edward IV"
*This is specifically applicable for Edward IV's first reign; in contrast, the charters in his second reign displayed a great deal of aristocratic and domestic unity and cohesion.
#the woodvilles#edward iv#wars of the roses#richard neville 16th earl of warwick#my post#elizabeth woodville#Obviously I hate the idea of Elizabeth and her family being seen as a social-climbing invasive species who banished the old nobility and#drove Warwick/Richard into rebellion and dominated the government and controlled the king and were responsible for Everything Wrong Ever#but I also dislike the 'revisionist' idea that they were ACTUALLY just passive and powerless bystanders or pawns who kept to their#social “place” (whatever the fuck that means). Frankly speaking this is more of a diminishment than a realistic defense.#the 'Queen's kin' (as they were known at the time) were very visible at court and demonstrably influential and prominent in politics#and as this shows there DOES seem to have been a genuine division/conflict between them and the Nevilles during Edward's first reign#(which DID directly lead to the decline of Neville dominance in England though the maintained honored positions and influence of their own)#Especially since Edward's second reign was entirely void of any such divisions - instead the nobility were united and focused on the King#even Clarence and Gloucester's long and disruptive quarrel over the Warwick inheritance never visibly left its mark on charters#so the Woodville/Neville divide from the 1460s must have been very sharp and divisive indeed#And yes it's safe to say that Elizabeth Woodville was probably involved: whether in her own right or via support of her family - or both -#it's illogical to argue that she was uninvolved (even the supportive Croyland Chronicle writes that Edward was “too greatly influenced”#by her; she and her family worked together across the 1470s; she was the de-facto head in 1483; etc)#Enhanced by the fact that Elizabeth was the first Englishwoman to be crowned queen - meaning that the involvement of her#homeborn family marked the beginning of “a new and largely unprecedented factor in the English power structure” (Laynesmith)#This should be kept in mind when it comes to analyzing contemporary views of them and of Elizabeth's own anomalous position#HOWEVER understanding the complexity of the situation at hand doesn't mean accepting the traditionally vilified depiction of the Woodvilles#Warwick and the Nevilles remained empowered and (at least outwardly) respected by the regime#Whether he was driven by disagreements over foreign policy or jealousy or ambition - the decision to rebel was very much his own#Claiming that the Woodvilles were primarily responsible is ridiculous (and most of the nobility continued to support Edward regardless)#There's also the fact that Warwick took what was probably a basic factional divide and turned it into a misogynistic and classist narrative#of a transgressive “bad” woman who became queen through witchcraft and aggrandized a family of social-climbing “lessers” who replaced#the inherently more deserving old nobility and corrupted the realm - later revived and intensified by Richard III a decade later#ie: We can recognize their genuine division AND question the (false/unfair) problematic narrative around the Woodvilles. Nuance is the key.

The way people sometimes refuse to acknowledge that writing choices that clearly go against established canon should mean something is endlessly frustrating to me. We don't have to agree on the interpretation, but these writing choices SHOULD mean something.
Otherwise, it's shitty writing.
#'the ga wouldn't even notice'#'the character doesn't seem to mind'#'you're reading too much into things'#no actually the fact that so many people think writing doesn't have to involve any stylistic or thematic choices to build meaning#and that writers just do stuff and as long as the character doesn't say anything it couldn't possibly mean anything is absurd#like y'all can pick up any classic piece of literature and think the writing just manifested on the page#and nothing is any deeper than some author saying what happened to a character like the character's just recounting real-life events#and that nothing really means anything except exactly what is said outright or some shit#but that's not how good writing works#in any form of media#and if the blatant contradictions are not being addressed then maybe the writing is shitty actually#and also even IF something wasn't intended to mean anything by the author directly doesn't mean that no meaningful connotations exist#for the audience like jesus christ y'all#i get enough of this bullshit from my students i don't need it in fandom too#let people analyze things and dig into them and spec and 'look too deeply' it's fun#and also it's okay if someone has a different interpretation than you and wants to talk about the possibilities behind that interpretation#or about other possible interpretations#it is not hurting you to see someone 'read too much into something' let people have their opinions#without trying to shut down everything you disagree with goddamn#anyway#911 discourse#fandom negativity#and actually i do think it's mostly shitty writing at this point#but that doesn't make it not mean anything that it's shitty writing actually#and it shouldn't be viewed as some awful character flaw for someone to point out why certain choices don't make sense#and to talk about what they would like to see addressed because of that
