🌈Dream Along With Me FAQ!☁️

Hello, Hi! I decided to do a little FAQ since I get a lot of the same questions in my ask box! Beware... I have the tendency to yap... I will update this from time to time as more questions pop up!

✨ Question: What made you want to make DAWM? 🌈 Answer: So when I was very young, I had landed an internship at Jim Henson's, but I wasn't feeling satisfied with my work there, it wasn't scratching that creative itch. That's not to speak ill of it, when you're an intern you're not given that many tasks that are "higher stakes", that's just standard at a studio. When I was talking to my pops about this, he recommended I make the project I wished I was working on. Earl (full name Early Early Oxenfree) was my character that I was fixated on at the time, so I decided to give him a story and make him some friends. Take a gander at some of the (non-spoiler) concept work I started out with :oD (Don't worry, one day I'll show the other concepts when I can)

✨ Question: Is this an ARG/Mascot Horror? 🌈 Answer: No, it's an indie animated series :o)

✨ Question: Is this going to be like Five Nights at Har Har's? 🌈 Answer: No 😂 but if you enjoy that you might like DAWM?

✨ Question: Why does Archie have blue hair/yellow skin? 🌈 Answer: Because I like that combo. 😆 I mean why not? That's my favorite blue-- it's the same blue as my bird, Kraken! The choices for Archie's sweater and pants would've been a nightmare to track in animation so I had to go with something more simple. Yellow happens to be a skintone in 80s animated television that was popular at the time because of how eye-catching it was. I'm not going to make him look worse than he could be just because Marge Simpson or Yellow Guy or Sid the Science Kid or Joy from Inside Out did it first, that would be bad character design, babey! Primary colors are timeless and iconic combo for good reason. They're eye-catching and give contrast with colors in their simplest form, which is one reason they're prevalent in childrens' animated media and "kidcore" aesthetics.

✨ Question: You worked at Jim Henson's?! What did you do there? 🌈 Answer: Yes! I was inducted as a muppet in summer of 2010! Kidding, I was just an intern. I was assigned to paint UV Texture Maps for paintings and props in the background. I also... modeled a pumpkin for their Halloween episode... One 😂 You can see one of my paintings in "Sleep? Who Needs It?!". It's a little funny because they picked the one painting (of three I made for this episode) I was not proud of... But uh, I also got to color one of the pages for the Archaia Dark Crystal comic and that was really cool <:o)

✨ Question: Why does Roy have 5 fingers on one hand and 6 fingers on the other? 🌈 Answer: It's all the better to high-five you with, silly! His handshakes are one finger friendlier! ;oD Hehe okay but silliness aside, when I was designing Roy, he was meant to look unsettling and off-putting to funnily contrast his sunny disposition, and was aware that folks judge people that are born a little different (it's unfortunate and honestly sucks but that's a whole other can of worms). One of the things I did was give him an entirely different finger count-- It was to make a little fun of gen A/I, which is unsettling and off-putting itself. Later though, folks pointed out he could be polydactyly representation. I love Roy and think that's actually pretty cool!

✨ Question: What were your inspirations for DAWM? 🌈 Answer: The Muppets, Sesame Street, Osamu Tezuka's works, and Moomin were some animated/puppet media off the top of my head that always stuck with me my whole life and have influenced my retro inspired work the most. They all had such sweetness and charm to them, and all felt like a found family :o) My favorite trope. Puppets were also just deeply meaningful to me because they were physical forms of creativity and childlike wonder you could hold and play with! I thought whenever you made one, you put a little bit of your heart and soul into them.

I wanted the Dreamalong Gang to have the charm of Jim Henson's and Tove Jansson's characters, but I wanted them to have the humor and intrigue of Gravity Falls, Over the Garden Wall, Don't Hug Me I'm Scared, and Welcome to Night Vale. DHMIS and Night Vale actually inspired the story the most because they were both a really nice mix of absurdist humor and horror! Sleep Paralysis Demons were a point of intrigue for me that I thought were perfect for a Dreamscape setting, so I started working on including those.

I will mention too that seeing Welcome Home encouraged me to post my art again, seeing it made me feel nostalgic, but also incredibly happy to see people appreciate Muppet-inspired art again <:o) I fully intended to just keep all of this to myself because being in the public eye is spooky, but I know that's something I wanted to change, so I just started throwing spaghetti at the wall... this time, with feeling!

I have been animating more with Toonboom lately though! For editing programs, I have been using either Adobe After Effects or Premiere Pro. I used to use Capcut, but they put a lot of effects I used under a paywall >:o0 Peepee....

✨ Question: Can we have a Content Warning List? 🌈 Answer: Yes! I may update this from time to time if it changes, if that's alright, but as far as what has been planned/written... Here are the trigger warnings so far:

Body Horror, Friend Loss/Death, Neglect, Religious Horror, Abusive Households, Blood/Slight Gore, Cleithrophobia (fear of being trapped), Suicidal Ideations, Depersonalization/Derealization (these are kinda/sorta... it's hard to explain without spoiling), Oneirophrenia (Dream-Reality Confusion), Manipulation/Brainwashing, Disorientation.

Eleanor Grayson's hero outfits, part 1. I'd like to make a lineup of a handful of alternate universe variants, but for now here's her normal fits and 1 AU (:

Extra information about each of them (and her in general) under the cut:

Suit 1 - Nolan took Ellie and Mark both to Art's shop to get their first hero suits after their powers emerge, and of course them being twins means Art wanted to make them matching suits - knee high boots, fingerless gloves, the same goggle mask and everything. Considering the public knew that Omni-Man and Invincible were father and son, I think they'd also know that Invincible and Mercy were twins, so their similar suits were like marketing to their image as the duo heroes. The white line on her chest is a stylized "M" for her hero name, Mercy. Eleanor does NOT like the skintight suit, she gets self-conscious about it, but she thinks there's no avoiding it (since so many heroes wear them) so she doesn't bring up how uncomfortable it makes her. When she goes home she throws on a random jacket from her closet - it was not made to be part of a hero uniform, so it's getting torn apart like 5 seconds into any battle. Very funny mental image of Eleanor going to a normal clothing shop and bulk buying like 20 of the same exact jacket bc once she wore it for the first time she went "welp it's part of my image now, I have to keep wearing it".

Ellie and Mark at this point are inseparable. They're the typical close twins who do everything together, growing up sharing everything and doing all the same after school activities and such. Them getting their powers at roughly the same time (Ellie got hers first but only by, like, a week maybe) just made them closer, as they delve into the world of being a hero together with their loving father (:

Suit 2 - Art probably sees her jacket addition when she's on the news with Invincible, and he immediately goes "hey, wait a sec..." so she comes clean about how uncomfortable the tights make her. He wishes she'd told him the first time, but he takes it in stride and makes her a new suit right away with a skirt at her request. He thinks about adding a jacket to it too, but at that point she kind of got used to not having it (since the normal jacket broke so often) so she said it was fine actually. The skirt addition was pretty much immediate, so it wasn't too big of a shift from suit 1 to suit 2.

Ellie moves out of the house at this point (thanks to a nice GDA paycheck. She wanted to move out ASAP because she can't stand being in the house that reminds her of her father, as opposed to Mark staying to support their mother). Her and Mark's relationship is a bit strained from general hero troubles and of course the trauma of their father's leaving, but mostly they're still pretty close so they still market themselves as the twin heroes, fighting together and generally being inseparable to the public eye.

Suit 3 - her current outfit as of season 3 of the show. A lot of shit happens in between suit 2 and suit 3, and Mark and Ellie wind up separating. Firstly because of their strong disagreement about their father - Mark went to Thraxa alone (Ellie chose to stay on Earth while he left) and came back with the mentality that their father is changed man who needs their help. Ellie, however, heard that the Viltrumites took him away to be executed, and only says "Good". She can never forgive him, and it stresses out their relationship. Secondly, while both of the twins were horrified about finding D.A. and Darkwing in Cecil's payroll, Ellie decided that it wasn't a dealbreaker for her. She opposed it the same as Mark did, but she still thinks that working for Cecil is the best way for her to be where she needs to be to help people and save the world. This decision tears the twins apart almost completely. At this point, they both get outfit changes - Mark keeps his suit design but changes the colors (which are ironically black and blue like Mercy's original suit colors), while Ellie decides to completely overhaul her uniform entirely. New design, new jacket, new color scheme. Neither of them want to be associated with each other anymore, so they avoid the "twin heroes" moniker at this point. Also I like the red on the underside of her gloves and her boots because it looks like blood. Her bloody path, her bloody hands.

My friend chose this color scheme for me, and I just wanna say the colors are picked from show Cecil's outfit (: to showcase her being a loyal GDA agent at this point even after what she learns about him. The red line going down her jacket is meant to represent Cecil's red tie.. heh.... I like Cecil a lot, sorry I had to give her a suit based off of him lmfao

"Bad End" AU Suit - just want to make it clear, this is an AU and not her canon future. Ellie's love of Earth and humanity is her most defining character trait. She'll do anything she thinks is necessary to protect them - which is one of the biggest reasons that she's still willing to work with Cecil after the reveal, because she understands that sometimes you need to do bad things to save as many people as possible. In this AU, shortly after the Invincible War, she looks around at all the death and destruction and realizes there's no point in fighting against the Viltrumites. She comes to the conclusion that there's no way to win against them - that the only way to save the planet and people she loves is to join them and plead for their survival from the inside of the empire. Mark, exhausted and angry and full of the typical Viltrumite violent temper after the war, can't even bring himself to hold back against the betrayal from his own sister. They fight for a while, equally matched, before Ellie realizes their fight is just bringing more pain and destruction to the world that she's trying to save. So she leaves the planet to join the Empire, but not before Mark manages to give her a very nasty face wound that'll leave her with a permanent reminder of what she chose to do.

She's too attached to her 3rd suit because it's a reminder of what she was trying to protect, so she refuses to wear the typical Viltrumite uniform. Since there's some variation in their uniforms anyway, I think they'd be fine with the suit as long as she wore it in the Viltrum Empire colors, so she has it remade with the colors and symbol.

The next time BE!Mercy sees Cecil, he calls her a traitor to her own people - but she just frowns and says "Aren't we doing the same thing? Making a deal with the devil to save this world?"

She learned it from him, after all.

when was the last time you cried - it's funny; i couldn't tell you. i've never been much of a crier, no matter the emotion. even when atlas was born, i was too excited to meet him to actually happy cry.

do you have kids? - uhhh surprisingly, yes? [she laughs] i-i don't know, i was about to say "oh, yes, i have a son" all effortlessly like some PTA mom, that was wild.

do you use sarcasm a lot? - more than i'd like to admit. it's hard not to!

what's the first thing you notice about people? - it sounds corny, but their eyes. a smile that doesn't reach the eyes can tell you so much about someone. the way they look or don't look at you, the way their eyes move while they speak...

I’m curious how y’all feel about the following: if someone leaves a comment on someone’s art that’s just “oh I thought that was (different character)” with no further comment about the art itself, do u feel that it’s rude, whatever, or a compliment? I like your kingswap AU, but some part of me can't help but feel like something's been lost in the blorbofication of our beloved monarch. I think it'd be interesting to see some of his more villainous traits get reintegrated over time as he gets further into the loops.

His ability to be casually cruel towards others if they endanger his goals/those he wants to protect, his disregarding of other people's feelings or autonomy if he thinks he knows better.

Could be fun to explore!

Oh, this is intentional! I very specifically wanted to put Clovis' 'best foot' forward (or at least the funniest one with him being an anxious dog) as I yap about this AU stuff. I think it's really important to highlight the best/more positive parts to the guy, as a reflection back to the King. Think of it...like the conversation about the Emotion keys in ISAT, and the conversation about how strong emotions are ultimately temporary - both good feelings, and the worst ones. I don't think the King is entirely his bad points, if that makes sense? Yeah he's VERY capable of being monstrous, yet he also accepts the flower and goes 'hell yeah, best victor wins, lets make this a fight worth remembering'. So, with Clovis, while he's technically not the actual King, i'm being very intentional with how I want to show him off, if that makes sense? Highlighting some aspects and downplaying some. Like, sure, Clovis isn't ACTUALLY the ISAT King but goddamnit if i'm not intentional with my AU and get the character themes and voice correct and keep what made them appealing I Will Die.

But you make a fantastic point, so I'll share some thoughts on Clovis' worsts parts.

(If you didn't catch the bad behavior soon enough, this guy would totally be an insufferable rules lawyer in your Table Top RPG campaign)

Despite his party dynamics being silly and nuanced, and everyone picking him up like a dog from behind a dumpster, Clovis is actually very outwardly unnerving to a lot of folks who don't come baked with that Vaugardian sensibility to Not Ask Questions. He can be very particular about how he wants to approach things, and can be very 'i've done this before, my way is best' - this sort of behavior is downplayed with the Party because 1) He's actively searched them out and has pledged himself to Mirabelles cause, so she (and the party) are sort of the boss, so he feels he shouldn't cause a fuss if it's not something that he knows he's an expert in, 2) His strict sense of knightly sensibilities and code keeps him generally polite (and awkward) with most folks, and 3) They were nice to him so if they think him insufferable and not useful He Will Die.

When things get intense and serious, so does Clovis. Isabeau affectionately calls it 'locking in' (but also recognizing when Clovis is getting fixated on 'i think i'm right listen to me' and goes 'oh shit thats what I used to do lets diffuse') and Mirabelle thinks Clovis is 'the good kind of scary' (since you know, Knights and justice and doing the right thing).

Needless to say, when you add the loops into this equation, a situation where Clovis gains intimate knowledge of how everything works in the House, and companions which are repeating things to the point of no longer being meaningful, paired with the frustrations of nothing working...Oh boy. Not to mention, Clovis' greatest potential ally in this scenario, the person who shares the hell that is the loops...is also the person with the most baggage regarding Clovis' familiar appearance and mannerisms. So once those frustrations bubble up...

Needless to say, Clovis has an...interesting dynamic with Loop because of all of this. Clovis isn't sure he likes the ability to scare his Star-guide.

(...there is...one other person here that shares the loops with Clovis...but it's Complicated. We'll talk about THAT later.)

How do you have the time to manage art with so many other interests?

I HAVE NO IDEA. I'm juggling uni, character design, hiking, vintage toy restoration, birdwatching, painting figurines, and everyday chores and I do NOT know how I'm doing it. I thiiink if I had any tip it would be to do a little bit of everything, and it doesn't have to be daily. I go hiking once a week, I restore vintage toys every few weeks to a month, I go to uni daily but work on art during lectures, I paint figurines while studying via vidio/audio, and I completely ignore my chores until I get freaked out at the mess and have to force myself to do them [:

ANOTHER THING! if you look closely at my art, you'll notice I use a pencil brush and some of the lines are a little sketchy. this is both a stylistic choice AND an amazing timesaver! I don't really Do sketches. only for commissions where I'll need to check in with the client to change poses, clothes, expressions, etc. my lineart IS my sketch. this means I can cut my drawing time in HALF a lot of the time.

Here's a diagram of the man himself !!

Also, with Cuphead and Mugman, their heads ae lined with the same gelatin their hair is and that thick layer of gelatin acts similar to that of the dermal papilla, the liquid is held on top of this thick layer acting like the skin and/or blood that layers on top of the roots.

You would have to stick a needle with a large amount of force to go through the gelatin and cause leaking, which is equal to taking a drill or bone saw to his exposed bone

begging u to talk about eclipse’s pov in o’ medusa as of chapter 5 please please please - i know thats really open ended but i want to hear EVERYTHING ur willing to share about his point of view and feelings on everything that’s happened so far, esp the scene where briar begs him for bandages and insists to get them in the temple instead of town and in this last chapter where he saved them from neador and then from his statue. what does he think they’re really hiding from? pls. im begging u pls infodump abt gorgon eclipse i want to hear it.

When briar is begging for bandages, Eclipse does not understand why they do not value their life. They do not grasp the danger before them, and they will soon regret every dwelling here. The only reason Eclipse allows briar to stay the night is because he suffers the smallest bit of guilt of reopening their wound when he grabbed them too roughly. Otherwise, he would have forced them out of the temple—if not outright removed the blindfold to force them to open their eyes and face him or flee. He didn't care to believe in anything they were talking about, and he certainly did not agree to help some goddess by protecting this scared and wounded human.

But then he woke up to a morning where the temple had another presence, and the air was slightly warmer, and there was a sweetness to the echoes of briar's footsteps. It made him weak with want. When briar pleaded with him to stay, he still held his resistance but it was a losing battle even then.

As for who Eclipse thinks briar is really hiding from, we'll get into that more in the next coming chapters. <3

I enjoy shoving him in a freezer & making him beg for his life. I just think he's the type of guy who would be perfect to use for testing out torture methods, or maybe just for lab experiments yknow. It's somewhat appealing to put a boisterous man in his place.

what was everyones endings in your du drow playthrough? like did they live happily ever after or did some of them parish from the narrative

-Lae'zel died in Act 1, DU drow slashed her throat after she tried to murder-suicide the camp out of fear of turning into a mindflayer.

-Gale sought out the crown. In the game's canon this means he immediately ascends to Godhood but in my personal narrative (I finished the game before the epilogue was out) he goes on to research it while having to flee Mystra's wrath by any means necessary for several years before anything can actually happen.

-Wyll broke his pact with Mizora. They also rescued his dad from the prisons after going down there and realizing he was still alive (despite her best efforts) this was mostly for rubbing-on-Mizora's-face purposes LOL

-Karlach died at the docks because of her engine after the brain was felled.

-Shadowheart sacrificed her parents and for a while travels alongside DU drow and Astarion, events from A Novel Experience proceed.

-Astarion killed Cazador, was persuaded not to ascend and freed both the seven thousand marks and his spawn siblings. Events from A Novel Experience proceed.

-Barcus got flung through the sky and died from rough-landing-itis.

-The gang sided with the mercenary duergar at Grymforge and killed Nere. The gnomes that didn't die remained enslaved to the duergar.

-They saved Arabella both at the tiefling grove and at the shadow-cursed lands.

-The rest of the gnomes at Moonrise Towers and the tieflings from the grove were never rescued, so I think that means they died. Zevlor was freed from his illithid tank and I'm sure he's dealing wonderfully with that information.

-Halsin stayed behind in Act 2 since they never rid the land of the curse. Good luck with that buddy!

-Jaheira came along into Act 3 because these guys need at least One adult present (and herself and DU drow loved bickering).

-They made an alliance with Gortash but didn't honor it, killing him at his tower later after disabling the steelwatch.

-Yenna was captured by Orin and died at Bhaal's temple.

-They killed Lorrokan AND Rolan and I'm sure Isobel and Aylin lived happily ever after.

-Raphael died, Hope survived.

-Minsc was rescued because mom said so. I'm sure he's out there Minsc-ing around right this moment.

-They betrayed the Emperor and freed Orpheus, who had to take on the task of becoming Ilithid himself.

-DU drow killed Orpheus.

EDIT: Nothing happened to Kagha because I didn't pursue her quest, I was mixing things up with another run of mine.

hello! i’m thinking about The Hug again and how much the way agatha embraces rio looks like for a while there her primary goal it just to comfort rio. then the situation flips again so quickly but the way she cups the back of rio’s head and pulls her in and rio melts is so- anyways idk where i’m going with this but i’ve always found this scene so interesting because i feel like agatha is exuding tenderness and protection for rio and it’s so very different from the way she acts around her in the rest of their scenes together, i don’t really know what to make of it. do you have any more thoughts on that, aside from what you’ve shared in the deep dives etc?

I think that around the campfire and during the HUG Agatha was letting herself feel - maybe for the first time since Nicky died - sorry for Rio. And Agatha is by no means an empathetic person, some of it is nature but she also very much doesn't want to feel sorry for others, that would make all the serial killing a tad more difficult, you know? It's no surprise that she empathizes the most with Wanda and Billy who are so similar to her, she's self-centered like that!

When it comes to Rio, Agatha is making an active choice to hate her, to cast her as the villain who took Nicky, because the alternative is blaming herself or blaming no one at all, and then what? She'd be alone with her guilt and sorrow, and she can't have that.

(It's interesting that if you put Agatha in a situation where she doesn't blame Rio and she's allowed to grieve freely you get detective Agnes. Who's still a mess and still has some very unhealthy coping mechanisms, but when she doesn't associate Rio with Nicky? Her true feelings, that sappy romantic yearn, really start to show.)

Let's see what Agatha went through just before the HUG (I really like to call it that in all caps). She learned about Lorna Wu using the Ballad to save her daughter. She almost lost Billy and cried in front of the others. She then had a moment of genuine bonding with Billy. Around the campfire, she experienced a rare sense of community and connection. As a result she was more vulnerable than usual, more open and tentatively receptive to other people. In other words, she was exercising her long atrophied empathy muscle.

I really think that Rio opening up and talking about Nicky caught Agatha off guard. Not because she didn't know that Rio was in pain too, it's more like she'd always refused to acknowledge it or linger on it.

And look, despite all, these two really, truly, deeply love each other. Rio was Agatha's person, the only one she ever opened up to, her partner, her whole support system. Agatha has accidentally let herself feel these old familiar feelings and now her heart is melting for Rio. The hug is a a rare moment of selfless love from Agatha, it's "I see you too and I miss you and I'm sorry."

And then she flips it over because of course she does. If you think about it, it's exactly what happened when she killed Alice. Because Agatha is always so starved, the moment a treat is within reach she can't help herself, her body reacts before the mind can stop it. And just like that giving becomes taking. It's what Agatha does.
