5. Favourite series and why

Oooh, fun question - every time I think of an answer another series comes to mind! For sake of narrowing my options down, I'm defining 'series' as 5+ books (since there are separate terms for duologies, trilogies and quartets) and after a lot of back and forth I think I've got to give it to Discworld.

It's one of those series where the quality of writing just gets better and better with each book and I can re-read them over and over again and still find something new each time.

It's also one of those series where I would never just recommend one or two books in it, I will always recommend the whole series.

25. A book you think about and you cringe because of how terrible it was

This is a controversial choice but I went into The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley with very high expectations because I'd heard so many good things and I finished it feeling very "What the actual fuck was that?".

38. What qualities do you find annoying in a character?

Characters that lack self-awareness and don't engage with their own flaws irritate me - but a lot of that is often less the character and more the author failing at what they're trying to do, I think. As in, it's often very clear that the author wants you to root for/agree with Character A, but everything they've shown actually makes me side with Character B type of thing.

Also the type that's like: 'I have a sad and angsty backstory that's the reason why I've done so many terrible things but I'm just going to wallow in self-pity and/or guilt as a shortcut for character growth instead of actually holding myself accountable for my own choices.'

Although equally often it's not the character that's the problem so much as it is the fanbase for that character.

Bug Race was a poll (because tumblr now has polls) that people spectated like an actual bug race (you know in primary school how you all pick a bug and line them up and the one that gets the furthest when playtime is over wins?)

Considering we are the site of ‘would you still love me if I was a worm?’ And ‘effervescent’ the results were surprising to say the least.

I suspected it might be that after the fish race lol... But people used to race bugs in the playground? I don't think anyone wlever did that in our school. I just hit things with sticks

Oh look, it seems like there's a Republican-led movement to purge voter rolls in the lead-up to the election! It's almost as if your vote matters and they don't want you to vote! Anyway, I whipped up a quick map (based on this) that shows when the voter registration deadline is in each state. There are a few deadlines coming up in the next week or so.

If you live in a state that regularly purges voter rolls for infrequent voters (the orange ones in the first map), or if you moved recently, it's good to check if you're still registered to vote.

Vote.org makes it super easy to check your registration: https://www.vote.org/am-i-registered-to-vote/

Just put in your address and DOB and they'll tell you whether you're registered. (And they give you a quick link to register online if it turns out that you're not! Only the 9 states in white on my map don't have online registration, and for those they provide instructions on how to do it via mail or in person.) If you want an extra verification, find your state's election website and double-check there.

So yeah, give yourself peace of mind -- do a quick check. :)

i turn 24 today. To celebrate, I made this comic to be a spiritual successor to lead balloon, a comic in which I talked about the darkest period of my life so far.

A lot has changed since my 23rd birthday and this one. My priorities have shifted a lot, in ways that I think are mostly good. But i think the best part about today is that suicide has gone back to being a far away notion. I'm really lucky, and I'm grateful for that.
