thoughts on sonja & martha for February?

Oh this is such a fun pairing to think about! I like don’t primarily ship them, but there are a few AUs I have in mind where they’re shipped and they do always have fun vibes.

In my post timeline/main universe, they aren’t together. There Martha and Sonja are kinda meant to be foils. They are both focused on magic, but Martha is a healer whose primary focus is reversing magic-caused ailments and Sonja is using forbidden magic to learn necromancy.

So within my main universe, they don’t tend to get along all that well, at least at the beginning. Martha sees Sonja as being far too reckless and unconcerned with her own safety. Sonja sees Martha as being incredibly judgey and butting into business that isn’t hers. I haven’t plotted it all out yet, but I like to imagine a storyline where they soften towards each other.

For Martha this starts during the Capsize revival arc. Martha is very heavily on the side of just putting her spirit to rest and not playing with the powers of life and death. Then she’s forcefully shown what Capsize thinks “going to the afterlife” means. This doesn’t entirely stop her from thinking that the revival is a bad idea, but she does admit that Capsize’s soul is clearly willing and ends up helping Sonja with the research for protecting her and Spark when they actually do the revival.

Then Sonja I think this starts when her flux flu starts getting worse and - with the Realm of Mianite not having any of the resources that Ruxomar did - she ends up having to work with Martha to make sure she doesn’t, like, die. And I think Sonja really does start to appreciate Martha’s methods here when she proves able to figure out magic in the far more limited world (even if the gang definitely end up having to go on a long quest to actually get the things to control Sonja’s illness).

Basically, in my mind universe they aren’t really a ship, but I do want a storyline of two people with different takes on magic growing close and realising there is benefit to the other’s methods.

For actual ship stuff, I have them “together” in two aus.

One is my yuri vampire AU, where before Sonja was turned into a vampire, I do think Sonja and Martha were kind of a thing.

In my eyes, Sonja kinda idolizes Martha in this AU. Martha is an experienced vampire hunter who can go toe-to-toe with Lady Ianite and live to tell the tale, she has knowledge that Sonja can only dream of and makes her feel like she isn’t alone in the knowledge of vampires.

However, Martha is still Martha. When the main plot of the vampire au begins, AKA Ianite discovering Capsize who she believes is her long lost love reincarnated and begins stalking Capsize with the intent of turning her, Sonja comes to her begging for the knowledge to kill Ianite. Martha won’t give her the info because she knows that Sonja won’t stand a chance but she won’t tell her that she’s afraid to lose her when she’s already lost one loved one to Ianite.

So Sonja goes and gets herself turned into a vampire, loses nearly all her memories to the point that she can only remember resenting Martha and ends up having Ianite with the stalking and kidnapping Capsize plan she literally got turned into a vampire to try and stop.

Then Martha heavily blames herself for this and ends up protecting Capsize in her stead which does in fact lead to further antagonising of her by Sonja. Martha also, despite knowing that she should, can’t bring herself to kill the newly turned Sonja because she still sees the girl that she loved.

Basically an angsty ride.

There’s also an AU that I haven’t written out anywhere which is a yuri fae court.

Martha is a half-fae attempting to figure out why the fae are all suddenly at odds with each other as it’s affecting the town where she lives. Sonja is a trickster fae that’s forming… basically a traitor court that’s trying to force the three fae courts to war.

I haven’t plotted that out, but I do think it’s Martha x Sonja (along with other yuri stuff).

Basically, I have thoughts with these two, not always ship thoughts but I always think they have a fun dynamic to work through and grow with.

18. there are ! some are more sensetive to colors/lights, some like certain foods while others dont (the siffrins absolutely despise instant ramen, while others enjoy it; neo holds the most spice tolerance in the system; nova is the only one who likes tomatoes; lilith and 2im can Not stand the taste of onions and the energy drink we usually buy. and so on) we also apparently have different tolerance to lactose? haven't really figured who has the most/who has the least but our reaction to milk/ice cream/cheese does depend on who's fronting

24. it's okay to not know who's fronting. it's okay to not know your origin. you will figure out everything in time, no need to rush it.

I love fleshing out the creatures in my worlds. Like their appearance, their abilities, their place in the world etc.

I don't like working on the politics and economics. :,)

- in RE? uhm... lemme think... it was either Serennedy or Wintersberg, I think! I'm pretty sure Wintersberg was first, actually. now, my first ship ever? probably in the Kingdom Hearts fandom, it was Soriku :)

- ough. slow burn... I don't actually indulge in that often, I think lmao! I'm very impatient 😔 oh! there is this one Serennedy fic that I'm loving that's kind of slow burn rn. it's called Life Does Not End Here :) one of my first serennedy fics I read, iirc :D

Out of Envy or Jealousy

Martha would not describe herself as a jealous woman. If jealously came into the equation with her relationships, it was her causing it, not feeling it. So, the fact it was currently building within her as she watched Foxx was an unpleasant surprise.

Maybe some would give her an excuse for it. After all, there was not a soul that seemed immune to Sonja's charms. Everyone loved her. However, that love was always platonic, nothing for Martha to worry about.

But as she watched her talking with the pirate captain, she couldn't shift the idea that their relationship was somewhere a little beyond friendly.

It was stupid, she tried to tell herself. She trusted Sonja and she'd never given any reason for Martha to believe she had any feelings for anyone else. But the mystic was very much a bundle of self-doubt and anxieties hidden by an outer layer of haughtiness.

How could she not feel the creeping insecurities as she watched Capsize smiling as she twisted one of her curls around a finger. The way Sonja was smiling back easy in a way that Martha couldn’t ever tell if she ever was with her.

Why else would Sonja have spent so long trying to revive her?

No, Martha could remind the two who the couple was.

She strode over with little care for the conversation she was interrupting. She wrapped her arms around Sonja. The fox turned in surprise and, as she did, Martha planted a kiss on her lips.

It was petty, she knew, but that didn't stop Sonja from leaning in close and embracing her. Everything about it assured that Martha had absolutely nothing to worry about.

Capsize gave an almost perplexed smile. "I'll leave you two to it."

hbomberguy’s latest video on plagiarism has made me completely rethink literature and writing. I have never once so much as considered intentionally plagiarizing anyone or anything, but I think there’s something more that has come out of this: the names of the people who created the works Somerton (and others) ripped off.

Plagiarism isn’t only bad because it is lazy and disrespectful, it’s bad because it buries the truth. If you can’t find a source, the conversation is over. Somerton’s sources are fairly easy to find by simply searching his plagiarized lines, but that isn’t true in most cases. Most of the time, the line from statement to source is a lot less clear.

Today, I was writing a report on English Ivy, which is an invasive species here in the US. I wanted to know when it was introduced and I at last found a source claiming it was introduced to the Americas “as early as 1727” on a .net website that seems quite reputable (it has multiple major universities credited in its home page), but there is no citation for where this date came from. I dug deeper and found a pamphlet created by a city government in Virginia that made the same claim, only to discover the first source linked in their bibliography. Another website (a botanical garden’s page) gave the same date with the same source hyperlinked. Of course, I have classes to attend and things to do and probably not enough time to follow the lines back to where this 1727 date came from, but if I had not just watched this video, I wouldn’t have given that date a second thought.

Of course, it doesn’t matter in the long run exactly what year hedera helix was introduced to the Americas, but it makes you wonder how many facts have been so vaguely attributed that it becomes completely impossible to figure out where they originated (and further, whether or not they’re true at all).
