A Dichotomy of Thought || 9
Previous/next chapters found here.
You and Johnny take a walk. CW: domestic abuse, panic attacks, dissociation, drug withdrawal, vomiting.
-
“Holy shit,” Jackie crows at the sight of you, her dark eyes huge and round like twin moons. One of her hands holds the rag she was using to wipe down the countertop of the bar and the other covers her mouth in a dainty expression of horror. “What happened to you?”
You shake your head, a silent plea not to ask any more questions. The bruises on your face still throb with your pulse, a painful reminder that you are alive when you’re not even sure if you want to be.
“Rooster’s gonna send you home,” says Jackie. “There’s no way you’ll get tips like this.”
“No he fucking won’t,” you say through your teeth. A day of not working means a day of no tips. A day of no tips means the stash of money in your locker remains stagnant. If there was one thing you had learned on Saturday, it’s that your time with your boyfriend is coming to an end, one way or another. Either he will kill you, or you will kill him, or will finally scrape together the means to leave.
You’ve got your eye on an apartment across town. One with copious natural lighting, one with a small but open floor plan. It would be more than enough for you. It would be everything.
Jackie sees the fire in your eyes—either that or you’ve gone and scared her—because she calls over Ruth to cover for you both and takes you into the break room, grabbing a bag of cosmetics out of her locker and doing her best to cover up your bruises. She gives you her jacket to cover the ones on your arms, the tiny circles caused by fingertips.
“Thanks,” you mutter, feeling like there’s something stuck in your throat.
“We gotta stick together,” she says, shrugging a shoulder. “I can’t work here alone. Not with just Ruth to talk to all day, and Rooster strutting around—“
“I know I didn’t just hear what I thought I heard,” a male voice says, the break room door flinging open and startling you both. Ruben stands there, his cowlick looking remarkably like a rooster’s comb. Your manager hates being called Rooster (which seems to make the problem all the worse), but the likeness is just too canny. “Why is Ruth out on the floor alone?”
“Girl stuff,” Jackie says with open malice. “You wanna hear about my monthly cycle, Ruben?”
He scowls, recoiling. “Just—wrap it up ladies. And wash your hands.”
“Jesus,” Jackie mutters once Rooster is gone and the door behind him is safely shut. “Men are so fucking weak.”
The bruises on your face throb at her words. Men feel pretty fucking strong to you.
-
“Yer outta yer mind if you think I’m eating that,” Johnny slurs, head in his hand where he sits slumped at the kitchen table. His entire body throbs, stomach wracked with nausea as he stares down at the eggs in front of him.
“You need to eat,” Simon says, firm and quiet. Just the sound of his voice makes tears fill Johnny’s eyes—but that’s all his eyes do these days. Water. It’s the withdrawal, he knows. It makes him feel like crawling out of his own skin would be a mercy, like he’s suffering from the worst flu he’s ever had: puking and shitting his guts out, body aches from hell, eyes and nose running constantly. Combine that with the tension with Simon and it’s like he’s living in a nightmare he can’t wake up from; except even in his worst dreams, Simon had never done something like this. Even in his worst dreams, Simon had been a hero to him.
“Can’t trust you,” Johnny mutters.
Simon reaches out, the motion a little too sudden and unexpected. Johnny flinches.
When Simon moves again, it is slower, with obvious purpose as he takes Johnny’s fork, spears a bite of his eggs, and brings it to his own mouth.
Somewhat mollified, Johnny picks up the fork and begins pushing the eggs around on his plate, just to make Simon shut up. Even if he knows the food isn’t poisoned, he still doesn’t have an appetite.
Then Simon sets a green pill beside his plate, and all it does is set Johnny off again.
“Get that away from me,” snarls Johnny.
“You can’t just quit cold turkey. They’re opioids, Johnny. It could kill you to stop.”
Fury swells up inside him, the edges of his vision bleeding black. Johnny shoves the half plate off of the table. It shatters against the linoleum, a sound which makes Simon flinch. For the moment, it satisfies Johnny’s need for control, his need for retribution. His need for violence. “I hope it does,” he grits out on a whim. “Don’t you pretend that you care.”
The table creaks under Simon’s weight as he places his palms against it and leans forward, his face stormy. “I fucking love you. Everything I ever do is because I love you so fucking much—“
“Oh, right,” Johnny scoffs.
“—yeah, right, I’ve been killing myself to keep you alive and safe and happy—“
“And you’ve been doin’ a shit job!” Johnny shouts, face reddening.
Simon goes quiet and stiff. Johnny doesn't believe for a moment that he’s gone too far. Simon is the one who went too far the moment he dumped the crushed oxycontin into Johnny’s juice. Everything else is fair game.
Before they discharged together, Johnny would have thought that Ghost’s face beneath the mask was just as stoic. Now he knows better, knows that Simon wore the mask to conceal a face which too often wore its emotions so plainly.
He looks sad. Angry. And for a moment Johnny thinks Simon might even hit him. It would be welcome, Johnny thinks. He would be glad to have a bruise to point to, to be able to say ‘Here is where you hurt me’ instead of all of his bruises being on the inside. But instead Simon just turns away and goes into the bedroom, slamming the door shut behind him.
After a moment, Johnny hears the balcony door open and shut too as Simon puts as much distance between them as physically possible.
Well, Johnny thinks, looking toward his slip on shoes. I can do you one better.
-
By the time you are clocking out, there is a message from Simon on your phone. Since poker night, there have been a few days of radio silence from the apartment next door—and you don’t even want to know the things they might have heard coming from your own apartment. You’ll be happy to see Johnny again, to know that Simon is getting to take a few brief minutes for himself, even if that’s all you can give him.
But when you open the message, your stomach drops: Johnny is missing. Have you seen him? sent nearly thirty minutes ago. You slam your locker shut, clenching the phone in your hand as you slip back out to the front of the restaurant, already bringing up the interface to call Simon, to hear what has happened and to find out how you can help.
It isn’t needed.
Johnny is sitting in the booth in the corner. Your heart swoops, takes your guts with it. You carefully make your way to his booth, noting the sweat on his forehead that he is mopping away with a napkin, noting the way his arm trembles. He looks thinner than ever. He looks sick.
He smiles at you.
“Are you off work? Did I catch you at the perfect time?” Johnny wonders.
“You did,” you say cautiously, slipping into the booth.
“Good. I want to take you somewhere.”
“Maybe we should go back to your apartment. Simon is pretty worried about you.”
Johnny’s face darkens, visible storm clouds rolling in. It makes your stomach turn over, anxious. “Simon doesn’t worry about anyone but himself.” He stands, shaking a little, and holds out his hand to you. Nothing else you can do, you take it, careful not to pull him over as you stand out of the booth.
-
The place Johnny takes you is a park nearby. It’s one that is handicap accessible, something which you’ve been taking notice of more and more often lately. The sidewalks are smooth and wide, the bathrooms are roomy, and there are plenty of benches (such as this one) for you and Johnny to sit down on when his leg aches from walking so far.
Your phone burns a hole in your pocket. The first thing you had done was text Simon that Johnny was with you and he was okay. You could feel the buzz of multiple messages, but you hadn’t brought the phone out yet to check them, not with Johnny’s focus on you. You could sense that Simon was a sore spot right now.
You didn’t want to make Johnny angry.
So the two of you sit on a bench in dappled sunlight, the sweat cooling on both of your bodies.
Johnny leans over and vomits.
“Jesus Christ,” you say, scooting close to him to rub at his back. “Are you alright?”
“Detoxin’,” he mutters, wiping the back of his mouth with a napkin he brought from the diner. “Don’t worry about it.”
You’re pretty fucking worried about it. Detoxing from what, you wonder, as Johnny sits up, leaning back heavily against the park bench, close enough that you can count his eyelashes. He takes several deep, steadying breaths, and you take the stolen moment to look at him. His jaw is sharper than ever, cheekbones sharp, circles beneath his eyes, but he is undoubtedly handsome. The thought startles you; you haven’t had such a thought about a man in years.
Johnny’s eyes open, blue as the sky, and rake over your face.
“Yer makeup job isn’t very good,” says Johnny at length.
Your heart skips a beat. You turn away and watch a woman pass with her dog, a shepherd. Wetting your lips, you can’t think of anything to say. Johnny’s hand appears out of the corner of your eye and you flinch away from the touch before taking note of the shape of his hand: open, with soft fingers meant to caress instead of hurt. Baffled by this gentle touch, you let him stroke his thumb along the shadow of a bruise visible beneath Jackie’s makeup. It makes you shiver, like a cold breeze has blown in.
“What was his excuse?” Johnny asks. “Or did he even have one?”
“What did Simon tell you?”
“Everything. Already suspected most of it. He beats on you, doesn’t he?”
“I don’t want to talk about this,” you mutter.
How long has it been since someone knew? No—not since someone knew. Since someone cared? Since someone confronted it head on and called it what it was? Jackie knew—she had to know—but other than taking the heat for you about some texts on your phone and helping you cover up the bruises, she never made any motions to acknowledge it. Your family had known, before they cut off contact with you for good, but they were terrible creatures in themselves.
You thought that maybe Simon had known, too.
People seemed to have a limited capacity for caring about others. Or maybe they just had a limited capacity for caring about you.
“I want to help you,” says Johnny, earnest.
You can’t help but look at him with suspicion. “Why?”
“Because it’s wrong, what he’s doin’,” says Johnny simply. “Because we’re supposed to cherish the people we love. Because no one deserves this, least of all you.”
Your hands work anxiously in your lap. He says the right things—but you’ve always been a sucker for pretty words.
“The last time a man wanted to help me escape a bad situation, it was so he could put me into a worse one,” you admit. Johnny’s face falls, hurt splashing across his features, and you feel it keenly, like it is your own. You’re quick to assure him: “I want to trust you.”
The rest remains unspoken: you don’t know if you can.
“The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them,” says Johnny with a wane smile.
“Hemingway said that.”
“Aye. You like to read?”
“Yes, but not Hemingway.”
Johnny laughs, a bright sound that has your mouth curling upward. Smiling isn’t unfamiliar to you, not when you must plaster one on all day to have any chance at all of making tips, but it’s been a while since it’s been genuine. Maybe that’s why it feels so strange. Maybe when it’s real, it uses different muscles.
“If you were going to help,” you begin cautiously, giving an awkward smile to an older couple as they shuffle by, pausing and waiting for them to be gone before you continue, “how would you do it? I’m…I’m in deep. He’s got videos.”
“Videos.” Johnny’s jaw has clenched tight, his eyes hard and cold.
“Of me.”
“Aye, I assumed. So he’s blackmailing you.”
You shrug a shoulder, eyes on your scuffed work shoes.
“What if I could make him disappear?” Johnny asks quietly.
You glance up. “How?”
It’s his turn to shrug, an expression of feigned indifference. A little smile tugs at his lips. “An accident. Any accident, really.”
You finally understand him, and at first you laugh, grin tugging at the bruises on your face until his own solemn expression barely changes, and then your laughter dies on your tongue.
“Johnny what the fuck,” you whisper. “You’re joking, right? I—Jesus Christ. I have to pretend that was a joke. You’re talking about murder, and—
—and I’m the first person they’d suspect!”
“That’s why it would have to look like an accident,” Johnny emphasizes.
“You’d be risking my freedom, my life—“
“I’d never let you take the fall—“
“Then you’re putting your own life at risk—why would you—fuck you don’t even know me!”
Johnny’s face goes red and he says nothing. Your teeth click shut with how fast you shut your mouth. You’re embarrassing him, making him angry—that much is clear. Maybe he expects you to be grateful, (and there is a part of you, small, which is flattered, as nonsensical as it is), but mostly all you are is scared shitless.
Johnny talks about killing the way most people talk about getting lunch.
“I forget that you don’t know about our past,” Johnny says, seeming to shrink into himself as he leans back against the bench, running a hand through his mohawk. “Simon n’ me. We’re ex-military. I don’t even want to guess at our combined body count. I—lass. I’m scaring you.”
“No,” you lie soothingly. Your hands clench together to keep them from shaking and giving you away. “No, no—I’m fine, I just remembered, I was supposed to give Jackie some gas money. She gave me a ride the other day. I should probably go—“
“I’d never hurt you, I swear it,” says Johnny fervently, sitting up tall. He reaches for your hand and you want to scream but you go limp instead, like a rabbit caught in a dog’s jaws, playing dead. He takes your hand and pets it softly. You barely feel it, mind far away.
“It’s okay,” you soothe him emptily, hoping to placate him enough to get away. “I’m fine, I promise.”
Johnny seems to realize what you’re doing. He gently lays your hand back in your lap.
He says, quiet: “I’m so sorry. I’m an idiot.”
You can’t talk anymore, shell-shocked, terrified. There was a time when you were good at this: good at appeasing the beasts inside men. You could soothe your boyfriend’s bad mood in a heartbeat with just a touch or a few words. But over time it had become more and more difficult, and you had become more and more afraid. Now no matter how hard you try, your efforts feel stunted and lame.
Johnny is talking, low voice rushing over you like the current of a warm river.
“—in public, aye? Would be a fool to hurt you here, wouldn’t I?” he asks, voice soft. He has moved to the far end of the bench until a gaping chasm rests between you both, one you are grateful for. It gives you the space to breathe, your chest throbbing. “All these people around—someone would stop me. You’re safe, lass. Take a breath fer me. Aye, and another—good girl, that’s it. Doing so well. Strong one, aren’t you?”
“Shut up,” you croak, feeling uncomfortably tethered to your own body, to the burning of your eyes. You reach up and wipe at them before the tears can fall. Beside you, Johnny sits quietly. Several minutes pass, and each person who walks by the bench seems to bring you more and more security, until you are safe enough to feel silly and embarrassed by your own overreaction. “I’m sorry. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”
“Don’t be sorry,” says Johnny. “It was my fault. I didn’t mean to frighten you. I won’t…I won’t bring that up again. I guess it’s pretty stupid. Simon’s been telling me so all along.”
“Are you two fighting?”
Johnny snorts. “You could say that. He did something…something terrible. I don’t know how to trust him anymore.”
“Do you still want to trust him?”
“Aye,” says Johnny, voice nearly carried away by the breeze. “In the service, I trusted him with anything. Everything. My whole miserable life. Never wanted that to change.”
“Someone once reminded me that the best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them,” you say.
“Sounds like a fucking cunt.”
“Hemingway or you?”
“Both.”
You have just relaxed back onto the bench, tilting your face toward the sun to offer it another one of your rare smiles when a shadow falls over the two of you both.

Can I request a fluff??? Kenma tutoring the reader since the reader is bad at studies?? And later they confess and all?? Thank you!!
Infatuation or Love?
Tumblr media
Pairing: Kenma Kozume x Reader
Warnings: Fluff
Notes: I'm sorry if it took so long. I really know Kenma as an introvert so him agreeing on tutoring someone seems too impossible. But I thankfully manage, I just hope he is not that out of character. Hope you enjoy it!!
_____________________________
I sigh in relief after hearing the school bell and was ready to take my console out of my pocket when the teacher called for me.
I stay still from my seat thinking what will we talk about knowing I didn't even do anything wrong this week.
I decided to finally stand up and walk to her desk and saw she was checking something in her grading sheet so I just stood in front so we wouldn't invade each other's space.
But this is nerve wracking.
"Sensei?" I called out in a whisper to alarm her of my presence.
"Kenma, I'm sorry for what I'm about to request" she started as I bit my lip a little to distract myself.
"I know that you are really busy especially if you are a regular in the volleyball team" she started as I nod in understanding but still thinking where our conversation is heading.
"But I need you to tutor someone"
It felt like my brain stopped functioning on her words.
I hope, I wish, if you don't mind.
It seems like those words are not in her vocabulary.
Do I even have a choice in this?
"Sensei, don't we have other students for that?" I mustered up the courage to question her as I tightly grip on my gaming console.
I need time for myself too. Lev is already a heavy problem I'm trying to unload from my life.
"They have declined"
"Then why can't I?" I almost slap my hand on my mouth when it let out the words that shouldn't be stated.
"Well I thought you would agree since you and Y/n seem to be close compared to the other students I gave this request to"
My ears pick that one name.
"Y/n?"
"Yes Kenma" she answered.
"Game"
"Come again?" The teacher exclaims in puzzlement as I tried to supressed the growing blush on my cheeks.
That came out loud than what I intended.
"I mean I don't mind, Sensei" I murmur that lifted a small smile from the teacher in front of me.
"Alright then, here's her contacts. Both of you should talk about your schedules so you know when you will have tutor sessions"
She handed me a card before I bid my goodbyes and immediately went to the volleyball boy's changing room.
I peek inside and saw that everyone seems to be already in the gym so I changed to my practice clothes.
I took my phone and typed her number.
It took me a lot of courage to even send a greeting and need to double check my spelling so I won't look stupid.
I hope this is the 'Y/n' I knew well due to Kuroo's constant nagging.
I quickly turn off my phone when I click the send button and just started walking to the gym, trying to calm my heart down.
Kenma, this is not you.
I remind myself when I start to notice I'm getting work up in this set up.
"Kenma! You're late!" I heard Kuroo immediately as I took a deep breath because I can really feel my racing heart.
I am not even sure if it was really her.
"Hey you ok? You look lost?" Kuroo ask as he stop in front me so I just walk past him and just start warming up.
"You look red, did you run on your way here?"
"Shut up"
"I'm just asking! Who knows you might be experiencing heat stroke right now"
I just ignore his nagging and just let the time pass by but I can't deny that my mind was in the phone.
Silently yearning that she would message me back.
Just because of one tutor, I had the chance to spend time with her.
"Kenma right?" My ears perk up when I hear her soft voice amidst the crowded hallway of the school.
I glanced up from my gaming console and saw the girl I started to secretly admire out of nowhere.
I just know I liked her when my heartbeat went faster and felt my face turn warm.
This infatuation just decided to target me right now.
"You're the one I'm going to tutor, correct?" I ask in a whisper as she hums in agreement.
I started to walk towards the library and felt her follow me.
My nerves started to get more out of control from the silence between the two of us until we finally managed to take a seat in the school's library.
"Where do you want to start?" I decided to break the silence and hid my gaming console to focus but I can't deny how my hands tremble under the table.
I really don't like socialising.
I only agree because it was her. Seems like I screwed myself up.
But thinking of the bright side, I prefer here than the gym where I won't even have enough rest unlike here where I bask in the cool and calming surroundings of the library without anyone annoying me.
Extra credits because of her presence.
"Wherever you want to start with" she answered in a whisper and my heart seems to calm down.
Is she also shy?
I mean, I only see her in every match we play, except when it's outside of tokyo.
That's why she always catches my attention until it turns into infatuation.
Now I need to suffer with the quick heartbeats every time I hear her name.
I shook my head to remove the thoughts that keep distracting me as I put my bag down to the floor.
"Alright then, we'll start with the easiest"
I need to take the lead which I have never done my whole life but this is a girl I'm talking about.
A shy one to say the least so since I need to teach her, I need to take the lead no matter how much I hate it.
As long as it was her.
Yet those moments where I need to push myself out of the bubble, will be one of the memories I would be honor to remember.
Because our relationship started to progress until we finally become comfortable in each other's presence.
She became a part of my routine and in exchange of fighting against my anxiety, I get to know more about who she is.
The reason why her grades started to fail was because she was also a working student. She can't balance school requirements and her work.
But she is not that really hard to teach. I think I only need to repeat myself twice and she will understand the lesson we are tackling.
And right now, three weeks after this tutoring session, I'm starting to have the urge to just lean on her shoulder and rest because I'm really starting to get comfortable in her presence.
It feels like I don't even want this to end.
"Kenma, I finished it" I heard her beside me as I finished the round I started playing like 10 minutes ago as I stopped leaning on the chair to check the worksheet I gave her.
Is this still infatuation when I'm starting to put efforts for her own good?
I slid the paper in front of her as I leaned towards her so I can point out where she went wrong in the third equation.
"In this part, you need to use the exact value. The only thing you're going to estimate is the final answer. Alright?"
I heard her hum as I finally had the urge to look at her and saw her focus was already on me.
It felt like my world stopped at that moment.
I saw how her face started to turn a little red until a notification sound caught my attention that made me break our eye contact.
I immediately turned away my face from her to hide the obvious blush appearing on my cheeks.
I was really falling in love that time.
And the obvious glances as the time passed by started to get to me.
"Kenma?" I heard her call for my name after I finished a practice match that brought the focus of my teammates on me.
"Oh, you're here" I muttered before I permitted myself to leave while drying the sweat from my neck using my towel.
"What brought you here?"
I finally glanced at her and saw she was holding a small box. I also noticed her shifting her feet from time to time and I unknowingly smiled.
"Sensei said that my grades are already good. So you won't need to tutor me anymore"
She mumbled as I nod but I can't help the sadness I felt in my chest and I out my mouth in a firm line to avoid saying something I shouldn't.
"Is that so?" I lost my words as my mind blank knowing it might be our last before we become strangers again.
"Yes, so as a little gift for keeping up with me. I made you an apple pie"
"Apple pie?" She nod when I repeated her words before she handed me the pastry.
"I've heard from your teammates that Apple Pie is your favorite" I didn't fail to notice the small blush forming on her cheeks that really confirms to me that this feeling of mine is not one-sided.
"Thank you Y/n. It was nice being with you" I exclaimed as I took her gift from her.
"Would you mind prolonging our time more?" I suggested and she immediately lifted her head up in delight.
"Are you sure?" She asked as I nod.
I saw her clasping her hands together as she seems to think whether to let out the words she is thinking or just let it be.
"I like you, Y/n"
I admitted it first so it won't be more difficult for her and I saw how her eyes met mine.
"That's why I ask you if you would like to prolong our time longer" I can't prevent myself from lifting a small smile.
And out of nowhere, I felt her own body on mine as I raised the box so she won't crush it.
"I like you too, Kenma. I really do"
Can I still call this infatuation?

Laurie!! 💛 (sorry, I just live in your inbox now 💖)
I'm back on duty and I'm here to tickle the collective fandom brain.
With Presumed Innocent coming out soon (aaaah), I would just like to hear all your thoughts on Rusty.
Is he guilty? If so, would we still do unholy things with him (duh, obviously)? Or is he just an innocent little guy and only guilty of cheating and murdering pussy? He obviously likes being choked and I'm not complaining. What else might he like? Is he a pancakes or bacon/scrambled egg breakfast kinda guy? He does need his protein tho, for several reasons... 👀
Please let me/us know all your thoughts and hopes for the new show and the character we're blessed with this summer, thank youuuu.
Paying my Rusty tax for inspiration ✨ (again)
Tumblr media
hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii! 💖 it's so good to see you in my asks again, daphne! thank you for the rusty tax (and the painful reminder that i wish this was ME) and the great questions! i've thought about that man A LOT but the majority of those thoughts are just about how badly i need him so... they're not too constructive... let's see what my -1 brain cell comes up with pretty much on the spot! 🤭
i don't think he's guilty. since the first teaser, i just had the feeling that he's innocent and his wife killed carolyn. clearly he has a talent for lying and manipulating facts (isn't it essentially his job?), he even lied to his therapist in one of the recent clips i saw! trying to lie to the human equivalent of a lie detector is both bold and dumb. he's clearly not completely innocent. cheating on your wife is bad but when your wife is ruth negga it's DOUBLE bad! i watched a quick interview of the woman who plays carolyn and oof. renate has something special. so i kind of get it <3 but i am better than a man and i would not ruin my marriage! the text messages and calls he's sending her are also very bold and dumb. he should know better than anyone how to avoid looking guilty. the dna, the messages, the stalking, the affair that was not so hidden since they were going out together and everything, this is just so stupid! he'd probably be so mad if he defended a client who basically did everything he shouldn't do and now tries to plead for innocence. i'm interested to see if we get an insight on how an attorney of his prestige and of his rank can turn into the most stupid person you've ever met. i mean, we know how, he's desperate to get his dick wet. but still, maybe there's more to it. maybe carolyn isn't that sweet, smart, picture perfect girl either. i'm giving her the side eye too.
i'm soooo excited for the show!!! my only point of reference is defending jacob so i like to compare both series. defending jacob had some really good twists so i expect the same from presumed innocent. in my opinion, one of the most powerful plot twists in defending jacob included the mother, laurie (i can still hear chris evans saying i love you laurie it was an amazing moment <3). so maybe that's why i focused on barbara sabich right away. i don't know, i'm so curious to see. i want to watch the original movie after the series, just to compare as well. i might never do it but at least i'm planning on it! anyway. can we just take a moment to appreciate how crazy it is to have this kind of show as your first television project? jake really popped off with this and his acting is absolutely insane in what we've seen so far! everyone in the cast seems solid. i'm guessing they showed most of the freaky sexy scenes in the trailers already to tease the audience, but i'm curious to know if there is more of that good stuff that they're hiding! i'm also looking forward to watch jake and peter saarsgard on screen again! and the glasses. i can't word vomit all of this and not bring up the glasses. now that we know jake is practically legally blind, i proclaim myself the protector of his corneas and i demand that he wears glasses more often. my motivation is purely selfless and it's not because i fold like a folding chair at the sight of jake with glasses (vision pun intended).
i saved the best stuff for last apparently! but mmm. what is that man into? i can't cook to save my life so he's eating cereals for breakfast. i'm kidding! (well not really but still). we know he's into choking, finger sucking, doggy style, public sex/sneaking away in a public setting, he loves the thrill of forbidden things and we see how touchy he is with carolyn so i'm guessing he's into marking because it's like a proof of something that is happening in secret of others? idk, just thinking. i don't know if his stalking habits fall into kinky or just regular obsession over the one thing he can't have under his total control, but i'd lowkey like it if he extended his stalking with some spicy elements. the way he holds on to carolyn, touches her everywhere, it's giving possessive and i love it. the ring though. oh the ring. why doesn't he take it off? does carolyn like it, does she get off knowing she has a taken man under her spell, that this greek god of a man prefers her to his wife? does rusty like the reminder of his cheating? does he like the self-inflicted guilt and pain of being reminded of his horrible and immoral actions? i think there's definitely some masochist tendencies in him. he's so quick to apologize for everything like oh no i might have killed a woman but i'm sorry tho </3 he might loooove the fake pity and fake apologies. whether he uses this tactic or if it's used on him does not really matter. to put it briefly: rusty is a FREAK and i want to be the somebody who matches his freak!
thank you for doing this, daphne! it was so fun to ramble pure nonsense fuelled by the sad 2 hours of sleep i've gotten last night 😭 i can't wait to read this tomorrow and be weirded out by how little sense it makes. i especially can't wait to read this after watching the entire series and seeing how wrongggg i was. it will be just as much fun as writing all of this! mwah mwah ily! 💖💖💖

A/N: I am so so sorry for taking forever with this one. I did not forget it, I promise. It was a whole thing with trying to find inspiration and rewatching the movie for research. But it... is... done!!!
Viper still refers to Bradley as a baby because he is (in his eyes)
Charlie is the horny German lady which I find hilarious
Yes, I used the TGM Squad as the kids for everyone who had children in the movie
The guys all have a work past with Viper
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He takes a seat at the counter, minding his own business as he reads a menu.
You smile as you walk inside, you always love coming here and not just because you get to see Penny and Pete, your favorite couple at the restaurant but because you get to make your waffle buildings.
‘Maybe today I’ll build a hut. Oh, and for the steam we can use coffee.’
Penny notices there’s a little pep in your step while she hands you a menu. “How are you doing, Butterfly?”
You giggle, “I’m doing just fine.”
She smiles and tells you your table is free.
He sees you enter the restaurant, sitting down in one of the empty booths in the middle of the row.
Penny turns around filling another customer’s coffee, she notices the looks he’s sending your way and needs to stop it before things can progress, you don’t need any more heartache (even if you don’t remember it today).
It would also save him from meeting your dad, who’s in charge of the port, Viper aka Mike or your cousin, Iceman aka Tom.
“I wouldn’t,” she tells him.
He furrows his brows and turns towards the waitress. “I’m sorry, what did you say?”
“You’ll only find yourself heartbroken if you try to pursue her.”
“What makes you say that?”
She purses her lips; she doesn’t find it necessary to tell him of your accident. But then she realizes he’s new and must be one of the few new cowboys that came into town.
“You’re gone for more than half of the year doing what you do. You’ve never met her but if you did and it was time to leave both of you would be crushed. Imagine how much that for a second.”
“Maybe she’d come with me.”
“She-” She sighs at the wound of glass breaking. “Excuse me while I go kick my husband out of the kitchen.”
“I didn’t do it on purpose, Pen.”
“Out of the kitchen, Maverick," a new voice says.
He doesn't know it, but it was the actual cook, Marcus.
He sighs, pushing the doors open, taking a seat beside the man. “Sounds like you did good there.”
The dejected man chuckles, “yeah.”
“Hey. You happen to know that girl sitting in the booth, would you?”
Pete glances over his slumped shoulder. “What’s it to you?”
“Woah. Woah. Why is everyone so aggressive? I was just asking a question.”
“A question that shouldn’t be asked.”
“Okay. Message received.”
“You seem like the type who won’t take no for an answer?”
Leonard chuckles, “am I really that transparent?” He chuckles to himself as he takes a sip of his coffee until he turns back to look at Pete and realizes how serious this whole thing is. “Oh, shit. Sorry, I just thought-”
“She wouldn’t go for a guy like you,” a voice says sitting on the other side of the rancher.
The two men angle their bodies to hear the man better.
Pete gives him a sarcastic smile. “Yeah, thanks for that, Cougar. We don’t need to give it any more ideas.”
“First off, it has a name and oh, she’s trying to make a door.”
The two look back and focus on you trying to get the finishing touches to your waffle house done.
He debates on walking over to you after hearing everyone’s warnings.
Clearly no one here wants to see anything bad happen to you if they’re this willing to stop him before he could try anything.
He pushes himself out of the chair, grabs a toothpick before heading over to you.
“Hey,” he starts off not to startle you entirely before sticking the toothpick in place, opening and closing the door to show you how well it works. “I thought this might help you a little more.”
You glance up at him, giving him a smile. “Well, then I guess the only thing I can say is thank you. To be honest, it probably would have taken me five minutes to figure it out, so again, I thank you for saving me from any potential embarrassment.”
Leonard lifts his hat, “I always do what I can to help a beautiful lady such as yourself.”
“Ah, I bet you say that to everyone you see then.”
He chuckles. This certainly isn’t what he was expecting when he walked over, it's different, nice even. “May I,” he gestures to the empty side of the booth.
“Please, I’d like to look a little less pathetic in front of, well everyone here.”
“I don’t think that’s possible.”
“You flatter girls to get them in your bed and expect that very thing to happen, don’t you?”
“Uh- well,” he stutters.
You shrug, “doesn’t matter now. I’m just happy to have some company even if it’s just for a minute or two.”
“Well, then I’m happy to be of service.”
You dazzle him with another smile.
This is different from the other times he's gone out with girls.
You lift your watch to check the time. “Oh, looks like it's time for me to go. Sorry,” you sheepishly shrug as you reach for your bag.
“Uh- oh, okay. Yeah, I guess it’s time I went back to work.”
You get up and barely walk past him when you stop. “Is that you?”
“Is what me?”
“The farm smell?”
His mouth opens into an “o” making it obvious he now knows what you’re talking about. “Oh, yeah. Perks of being a rancher. Sorry about the smell. I didn’t realize it was so bad.”
You shake your head. “No, it’s- it’s not that. It’s just- it's more of a comfort thing. It reminds me of my family because my dad and my cousin are in the ranching business, and this is- the smell of, well the farm, is basically what I grew up with.”
He nods, “okay, good to know I don’t smell too much like shit.”
You chuckle, shaking your head. “Happy to help but I seriously have to go now.”
“Okay.”
You head over to Penny and pay her before saying bye to everyone.
Leonard shakes his head once he sees your car leave. “She sure is something else.” He then heads over to his car, sneakily watching you leave.
-
He spends the night talking to Rick, watching his kids. “So, you gonna ask her out?”
“Me?” Leonard shakes his head, pulling Rick’s youngest, Javy, away from the fence before his beloved (crazy) goat comes over and towards the edge to scare the kids.
The rancher isn't going to have his headbutting, crossed eyed goat injure another one of his friends' kids (even if it's on them because they didn't listen). “I- no.”
“You like her?”
The kids’ “ooh” at their dad’s comment.
“What? No. She’s just- she’s... busy?”
“Excuses.” He pushes himself off the fence, “come on kids. Your uncle needs alone time to process the fact that he’s a wimp.”
The kids mumble wimp under their breaths as they walk by.
He’s left alone with his thoughts.
-
“Did she get offered any drugs today?” Mike asks his nephew.
Tom shakes his head, “no and you know she wouldn’t take anything anyway.”
“She wouldn’t know.”
The blond glances over at the older man.
“Don’t give me that look boy.”
Neither of them says anything else as they go their separate ways before going out to the garage so they can repaint the wall.
Nick and Carole walk to the open space, "hey guys."
"Do you know what got her in such a happy mood today?" Mike asks.
The couple glance at one another.
"When we went to get food, Penny said that one of the new ranchers came in and talked to her, but I don't know what happened," Carole tells him.
"A new rancher?"
She nods. "Yeah, he's the only one here who wears his hat twenty-four seven."
"And you don't know anything about this?" Tom asks Nick.
The mustached man narrows his eyes at him, "if we knew anything else we would have told you."
"I'm just checking, mother Goose. No need to get your p-"
Mike smacks his nephew on the back of his head. "Stop it. Nick take another roll and again, thank you for the food, Carole. If you could just-"
"Set it on the counter for later, I'd be happy to."
"How's life been with the baby?"
"It's been great. I know it makes her sad that we can't bring him around here. All they've wanted since they were kids was for their kids to be friends and hangout all the time."
Mike sighs, "yeah."
Carole sneaks up the stairs to check on you. She barely opens the door and sees you standing there, a smile breaks across her face. She's happy to know that you're safe and sound for another day.
-
The next day is a weird one... for Leonard.
He had no idea what was going to happen when he made his way to the restaurant, and he most certainly wasn’t expecting you to not remember him (and mean it).
Sure, he’s had a few girls say they don’t remember him but after some persuading and mentions of certain clues, they break, this time with you though, not so much.
A few minutes passed after you ran out until someone explained to him why he shouldn’t continue doing what he’s doing.
“Everyone knows but,” Penny sighs. “She was in an accident that killed her mom and left her with what the doctors believe to be permanent brain damage.”
That is the last thing Leonard was expecting to learn about you. “All those light threats make sense now.”
“Now that you know, are you going to keep trying to date her?” Penny asks him. "Because if you’re not and you break her heart, you can just leave now. We won’t tolerate that kind of behavior.”
He nods and finishes his coffee, coming up with a few ideas.
-
Rick lounges on his couch, as usual, and watches as his friend jots down a few things. “You must really like this girl if you’re so willing to do just about anything for her.”
Leonard shrugs, “I don’t think that’s it.”
“Well, you’re doing something really nice for her, someone you’ve met a few times. As for me, your best friend barely gets a birthday card.”
“You’ve been giving yourself your own gift every year.”
“Oh, yeah and what’s that?”
“Your kids.”
“Damn, you’re good.”
-
He sits at the counter in front of the kitchen, waiting for you to come in so he can ask to eat with you.
You enter, at the same time as always, greeting Penny and Pete before sitting down to look at the menu.
He stands up and walks over to you, “hey, is this seat taken?”
You look up from the menu, “yeah, that’s my boyfriend's seat.”
“Oh, it is?”
You nod, “and he won’t be happy to know that some random guy sat there while talking to his girlfriend.”
“What if we say we’re just friends?”
“Are we though? I mean, I don’t even know your name.”
“Leonard.”
“I wasn’t asking. Look, I gotta go.”
Everyone hears the commotion outside and runs out to see what’s happening, Penny and Leonard being the fastest to get outside when they hear your voice.
“It’s not- it’s October thirteenth.”
Nick slams his car door closed before rushing over, wrapping his arms around you, wanting to give you some kind of protection.
Leonard takes a step forward, ready to tell the cop everything when Penny gets to him first.
Pete grabs the cowboy, “you and Goose are gonna take her home. She needs to be with her family right now. She needs comfort.”
He nods, taking his words into consideration.
The boys get you into the car, but the ride home is a blur, you don’t even know if you’ve responded to Leonard.
-
Your father and cousin are outside before you know it.
"What happened?" Mike asks, taking in your state of distress.
Nick looks up at the older man with sad eyes. "She found out again."
He closes his eyes, rubbing his chin.
Tom comes to your other side, the two men helping you inside.
The mustached man stops the rancher before he could step any further onto his front porch. "I'm gonna have to stop you right there."
Leonard furrows his brows. "What do you mean?"
"You being here isn't good for her."
"What does that mean?"
"This is something we've done before. You have never been involved."
"How would you know?"
"You don't know her, and you don't need to concern yourself with her. I'm asking you once and only once. It's time for you to go."
The man turns around, not even waiting to see if he's going to walk away.
Nick peaks through the window, whispering, "what are you doing?"
Leonard rushes closer. "He kicked me out."
"He doesn't want her to be more heartbroken than she is. Are you here for her or for you?"
"What- why are you asking?"
"If you're here because you want to date her, I'll let you in. If not, you can turn your sorry ass around."
He didn't even have to hesitate. "Open the door."
The blond smiles and lifts the windowpane higher. "You said you'd open the door."
"I'd like to not have my ass kicked too bad, thank you."
He rolls his eyes and crawls through, listening to your cries as you listen to what you went through again.
"Can we- I want to talk to the doctor." You quietly hiccup, "I'm sure I've already talked to him but let me go again. Please?" You ask your father.
He nods and you all are off to the facility you were in for some time after your accident.
-
"It's the same thing I've told you before," Dr. Simpson finishes.
You nod, "I'm sure you have, and I appreciate you taking the time to explain it to me again."
Leonard and Nick were stuck talking to one of the patients, (ten second) Sam.
"Hi, I'm Sam."
They nod and introduce themselves to him and continue to do so until Tom grabs them by their collars, hauling them out of the building.
"You two idiots wanted to stay. Stop getting distracted."
-
Once you got home, you decided to go to your room and write in your journal, needing to process everything.
"Would it- could I go talk to her?"
Mike silently nods.
"Go get 'em, tiger."
Nick averts his gaze your dad's stern look.
-
He knocks on the door, waiting for you to answer as he removes his hat.
The door swings open.
You stare at him through your lashes. "What do you want?"
"To talk. Check on you."
"I'm fine. Go home. I'd say I'll talk to you tomorrow, but I'll forget you by midnight." You walk back into your room, leaving the door open.
He takes that as an invitation and enters. "I- uh-"
"I don't want you to feel like you have to stay after everything you’ve learned. I would understand if you didn't want to talk anymore."
"No!" He nearly screams before realizing his mistake and sits down. "I mean, I don't mind it. This- your twenty-four-hour memory is no problem. I- I actually think you're worth getting to know, every day."
You don't give him a verbal response as you nod, unsure of how to respond.
As you two bask in the silence, the other's downstairs are preparing for the next day.
-
“You coming to the garage or are you going to call Carole?” Tom asks him after his uncle walks out of the room.
“What do you think?”
Your cousin rolls his eyes, “still as lazy as the day I met you.”
“Hey, I am offended.”
“Good.”
Nick shakes his head, mumbling a variety of comebacks that he would never say out loud because he values his life.
-
Leonard reaches around, rubbing your shoulder, not realizing the time or what’s about to happen.
You wake, opening your eyes and start screaming, alerting everyone in the house.
Tom and Mike make it to your room in no time.
The older man hauls the rancher out of your room and out of the house. “I thought I told you to stay away.”
“You might have.”
“Then why aren’t you?”
“Sir, I really care about your daughter and honestly, the thought of showing her how much I care about her everyday sounds-”
“Like you’ve got some kind of ulterior motive.”
“That hurts. No, I mean, telling her every day that I care for her and making her fall for me again and again. I can’t explain it but, I know I’m the right guy for her. Everyone here cares for her and I’d like to count myself lucky enough to be a part of that community. I know you think I’m messing with her but that’s not true and even if you push me away, I will still be here and continue to stand by her.”
Mike has a lot to think about now.
He nods, “don’t come around today. She needs time to heal and take it all in, you hear me?”
“Yes, sir.”
“I’m sure I'll hear from you later. Now go.”
Leonard smiles as he leaves. He spends the day making a gift, as a precaution he doesn’t come by for a couple of days.
Leonard has a lot of things to think about.
If he stays and builds a relationship with you, he’s going to be putting his dreams on the back burner; something he’s had his mind set on for a long, long time now.
Can he, do it?
Is it worth it?
As much as it hurts him to think about, he needs to. But then he thinks of you again and it is.
He makes a mental note to email his response.
-
He knocks on the door and Tom answers it. “You’re back? I thought you decided to leave.”
The rancher shakes his head, “nope. Can’t get rid of me that easily. I- uh- I actually made something and I want to play it for her. I don’t know if it’ll help but, you never know.”
He steps aside, giving Leonard enough room to walk by.
“Thanks.”
You and your father enter the living room, seeing him placing the tape in the VHS player.
The tape plays before either of you could ask what's going on.
Your name flashes across the screen, drawing your attention along with mentions of the accident and Bradley, Carole and Nick's son who's four now.
You touch the scar hidden by your hair.
Tom stands back, waiting for what you decide to do.
Mike rubs his hand across his face. "Did you do this?"
He nods. "I did."
You take a deep breath and grab his arm, bringing him with you.
-
"Where are we going?"
You don't answer him.
"Should I be worried?"
You stop in front of your car. "Do you ever shut up?"
"I could."
"Do it now."
"Stop being mean to me or I swear I'm gonna fall in love with you."
You roll your eyes. "I need to talk to you, and I don't want to do it with my guard dogs nearby."
"Oh, sure."
He opens the door for you, earning a furrowed brow look from you.
You don't say anything as you drive to the one place no one knows about.
"Are we-"
"The accident site, yeah. I didn’t know that at the time but now that I do, it doesn't change the special value it holds."
"That's good." He turns to you, seeing the way you're staring at him. "What?"
"We need to end this."
"End what?"
"You know what."
"Honestly, I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Leonard-"
He cuts you off before you can continue. "You remember my name?"
"If you'd let me get a word in, you'd know that the only reason I know of you is because I have a journal. I've been keeping notes of everything, I just- I never realized it."
"And that means we need to not see each other anymore?"
"Exactly."
"Why?"
"You."
"I'm not following."
"You," you close your eyes, huffing through your nose. "You're so sweet and have been since we first met but you're going to get hurt."
"What makes you think that?"
"You've stayed longer than any guy ever has but to do this every day is just- I know it's a lot."
"It's nothing."
"See, that!" You point at him. "That right there is exactly why I'm ending this. You've got such a pure heart and I can't be the reason it breaks when you realize it's not worth it to stay."
"Who's to say that I'll stop feeling what I do?"
You avoid eye contact as your tears blur your vision. "You will, just like I know how my father and Tom are tired of it. They'll never admit it, but everyone has their breaking point and I think us meeting and seeing each other has pushed theirs. I'm really sorry, I like you. I do but I'm doing this to protect us."
You offer him a weak smile as the tears spill from your eyes and down your cheeks.
Before you leave to go back inside, you hand him your journal.
He pulls you back and kisses you.
Your first kiss with one another and it's amazing but can't last forever.
You pull away, walking inside with heavy steps; barely able to keep yourself together.
Tom nor Mike stops you, but they do make sure to call Nick and Carole, knowing you'll need a good day tomorrow even if you don't remember it.
-
Leonard doesn't come into the diner for a few days.
Carole sits with you at your job while Rick, Nick, and Pete drive Mike and Tom to see him off.
"What are you guys doing here?"
"We couldn't let you leave without saying goodbye," Rick tells him.
"That's nice but how do you know these guys?" Leonard points between the guys in the group.
"We used to work together before I decided to settle down," his friend explains.
"Is that what you've been telling people?" Pete asks, staring at the man with a confused expression.
Rick glances at the man, "what are you talking about? Of course, that's what I've been telling people. It's the truth."
Pete shrugs, "I just thought-"
"Thought what?"
Nick smacks the two across the back of their heads. "Alright you idiots, there's a time and a place to talk about this. Now is not it."
The two grumbled, rubbing the now sore spot.
"We came here to talk to Wolfman before he left."
"You told them?"
"We all worked for him," Rick points to Mike. "Of course, I'm going to tell them."
"Anyway," the oldest chimes in. "We're here to send you off but not before giving you this." He hands him a CD.
"Really?" The rancher asks, not understanding the sentimental thought behind it just yet.
Mike nods, "I think you'll like it. Check side B, song four. Everything will make sense after that." The older man walks away, letting the others take their time in following.
Nick pats Leonard on the back, saluting him before wishing him luck. "I wish you luck, my friend."
"I'm pretty sure you just jinxed me."
"That's for the theater and you're going to need it one way or another."
The rancher frowns.
Pete chuckles, "you really leaving?"
The blond shrugs. "What else can I do? She told me she doesn't want me, and I can't force myself into her life, you know. Whether she remembers me or not. I'm going to respect her decision."
"That's really nice of you, not everyone would do that."
"I keep telling you I'm not like everyone."
"And I understand why. You're going to do great, kid."
The man in the cowboy hat purses his lips as his brows knit together in confusion. "If I'm not mistaken, we're the same age."
"Potato, potahtoe."
"Not the same."
Pete smirks and slaps his arm before jogging to Mike's car.
"You really want to leave?" Rick asks, standing beside him, resting his arms on the fence. "Because I'm not buying this whole "I can do this" thing. I mean, from what I've heard it sounds like you love her but who am I to assume."
Leonard shakes his head, "you heard wrong."
"That's a load of bull and you know it."
"You'll never know."
"The kids are going to miss you."
"They'll find something else to occupy them."
“You know they won’t.”
“Whatever you say, man.”
Rick’s hand hovers over his friend’s shoulder, he doesn’t pat him like everyone else had (knowing he’ll be back in no time). “You’re an idiot.”
Leonard lets out a dry, “thanks.”
Tom gives him a knowing look, “you know I’m right.”
“If you’re just going to be a jerk, leave with the others. I don’t want to talk to you.”
“You said you were going to stay by her side no matter what. What happened to that guy?”
“She made the decision. She doesn’t want me around; thinks she’s going to save me from heartache or something.”
“You’re an idiot.” Tom walks away, leaving him with his thoughts.
Leonard shakes his head, not understanding half of what just happened; all he knows is that he’s offended. He hops in his truck, his heart heavy and mind full of useless thoughts; he places the CD in the car player.
Half forgetting he’s had the damn thing this whole time and never once thought to use it. He skips to the song Mike told him to play.
He’s barely on the road for ten minutes and gets out of his thoughts, his fingers stop tapping along to the beat on the steering wheel when he slams on the brakes. “Holy shit! Holy- no way. No way!”
His smile is as wide as can be. “I knew the old man liked me.”
He turns the car around and heads towards the office you visited when you were told about the accident again.
-
He runs through the door, trying to sneak in by the security guards before anyone can kick him out.
“Hey, where do you think you’re going?” He turns to face them, removing his hat.
He shrugs, not saying a word.
Maybe playing dumb would be easier?
The taller of the two stares at him with raised brows as his partner takes in Leonard’s appearance. “Go on in.”
Ron turns to Charles, “what’s wrong with you? What if he was a murderer or some psycho?”
“Did he look like a psycho to you?”
“No but-”
“But nothing. I got good vibes from him.”
“What did you smoke for breakfast?”
“I’m not answering that,” Charles says, checking the computer for today’s schedule.
“If someone gets murdered, I’m not protecting you.”
“Dick move.”
“Cya, man.”
“What?”
Ron pats his shoulder, “cover your ass. I’d remember that if I were you.”
-
Leonard runs into the room, eyes scanning all around and over anyone in the room, only to not find you, for the moment.
He wanders further into the room, tempted to ask around when he sees ten second Sam and decides not to, there’s too much time that could be wasted and he can’t waste a second right now.
You turn the corner, not noticing him as you help someone outline the outline of their sketch.
A voice calls out to you, and you turn, finding him.
“Hi? Do you- nevermind, stupid question. Could I- uh- could I talk to you for a minute?” He asks.
You know everyone here will be fine for a few minutes. You hesitate to answer him. “I- we can- just- just follow me.”
-
You two stand in your special art room. “Have we met before?”
His chin juts out. “What?” His eyes wander around the room, finally understanding.
“As you can see, I’ve seen you before. I mean, I know I’ve talked to you, but I don’t remember it. You- you haunt my dreams. I’ve seen us in my favorite restaurant, as if we were on a date and- and I don’t know if it was real or not.” He can see how it’s wracking your brain to try and remember something that won’t be there.
He nods, “we have. We’ve met a few times.”
“That’s all you’re going to say?”
He holds a journal in front of you, “if you really want to find out, read this. It’ll tell you everything.”
You stare at the cover, wondering if you should read it or not.
You hold it close to your chest and stretch your hand out for him. “Hi.”
He raises his brow but shakes your hand. “Hi?”
“We’re starting over.”
“Oh, that makes more sense.”
The door opens, “Hi, “I’m Sam.”
You purse your lips, trying to hold in your laughter.
“And our special moment has a little twist.”
“Leave Sam out?”
He nods, “we’re leaving him out.”
You nod and slowly remove your hand from his. “Hi, I’m Sam.”
“I swear to-”
-
You push open the door and cover your eyes when the sun hits you. Leonard turns around and smiles at the sight of you looking as beautiful as always. “Hey, you’re up.”
You nod, your eyes landing on your precious baby boy, Jake, pretending to be like his dad with ranching.
“How are you feeling this morning?”
Your daughter, Natasha, runs over to you with her arms open for a hug.
Everyone always says that a mother and her child share a special bond, in this case it’s true because you open your arms and scoop her up, holding her close to you, even if it is a little strange just finding out she’s your daughter after watching the video Leonard made for you.
“I’m okay, a little weird this morning.”
“I don’t blame you.”
You tilt your head up at him, staring at him like you’re trying to memorize his face. “I think Tom’s doing things he shouldn’t.”
He turns around, finding your cousin doing the exact opposite of what he told him to and hands Jake to your father so he can help your cousin from messing up his ranch (any more than he already has). “Son of a-”
“Language!” You and Mike shout.
“I wasn’t going to actually say it,” Leonard tells you two.
You and your dad share a look. “He’s your husband, you take care of it.” And he walks away.
“So rude,” you mumble to yourself.
“Hey guys!” Nick and Carole wave as Bradley runs towards Natasha (who hasn’t left your side until this moment).
You smile and wave back, hugging Carole tightly.
“Let's go inside and see what you have in your kitchen for breakfast.”
You lean in closer to her, whispering, “does he ever eat? I swear he is always raiding my pantry.”
“Fast metabolism.”
“I don’t buy it.”
“Can I tell you something?” She asks.
You nod.
“Neither do I.”
-
You, Carole, and Nick grimace at the sight of Leonard's friend and his coworker-
"Can they eat each other's faces somewhere else?" Nick mumbles. "I'm trying to eat here."
You and her share a look.
"You're still eating," his wife points out.
He shrugs. "I can't pass up when Sundown cooks. That'd be like disrespecting Penny."
Leonard walks through the door and grimaces. "You two need to stop trying to eat each other and enjoy breakfast. This is not what I imagined when I suggested you two go out."
Charlotte and Rick part from one another, offering weak apologies.
You and Carole can't help but laugh.
The rancher turns around at the sound of your laughter and knows that he wouldn’t trade this for the world.

Hey Lovey! This is a question but I thought it would be beneficial to get your thoughts on this. Would Kilorn be the kind of uncle to tell his niece/nephew that if they shake their soda can before opening it the drink will taste better and then preceded to watch the chaos unfold? Thats all, Love you!
Hello! Thank you for your lovely ask! There is no dull moment when you have Uncle Kilorn around!
Tumblr media
Dude, you and I know that the moment the Barrow-Calore children were born. Kilorn immediately took on the position of the "Fun and also Responsible Uncle."
When Mare and Cal are in a mission, and Ruth Barrow is too busy taking care of her other grandkids.
Kilorn would take good care of Coriane and Shade. He would changed their diapers, bathe and feed them. Read them bedtime stories or the stupid antics he and their mother would often get into (of course, he will tweak it a little bit, to make him look cool infront of his niece and nephew.)
He would send them toys that they would love but are very noisy to play with (Which Mare and Cal absolutely loved *insert sarcastic voice*).
And YES! He would definitely play pranks on the Barrow-Calore family. However, I don't think he would play a prank on his niece and nephew. HE WOULD TEACH IT TO THEM!
After Uncle Kilorn told them about the soda trick. He would hand a can of soda to baby Shade and point at the garage.
"Now, go give this to your dad. He must be thirsty!"
Shade, beams at his uncle, holding the cold can of soda between his small chubby hands. "Dada, thirsty." His little toddler feet marching towards the garage.
"Shade!" Kilorn called after his nephew.
Shade slowed his steps and looked back at his uncle.
"Don't forget what I taught you." He winked.
Shade grinned, showing his baby teeth and shaked the can aggressively. Excited to hand his father a tastier can of soda.
Note: Cal being very thirsty was indeed very thrilled to see his son waddle in his workspace to hand him a cold can of soda. Though he was not pleased that the soda shot through his nostrils.
Uncle Kilorn was banned from the Barrow-Calore household for a week.

We've been here for about 2 weeks at this point, and I still haven't seen the whole estate yet. That's why I've decided to go on a little walk around the back garden while San and Mingi are at work. Rora Manor stood on a lot of land, some of it even going into the woods surrounding it.
Walking into the back garden through the kitchen, I took a path that led to the right. It really was stunning. Seonghwa managed to get a lot done in the past 2 weeks.
The best way to describe the garden was that it resembled a small park with open spaces, trees, flower beds and fountains. The whole shebang. I must say, Aunt Jenna did prefer the more extravagant side of things.
About 10 minutes in on the path, I noticed some iron gates ahead and as I walked closer to them, it dawned on me what it was.
It was a cemetery. There was a cemetery within the manor grounds.
Carefully opening the gates, I walked into the threshold. Aaron Harper. Alice Jennings. Elizabeth Jennings. Ruth Harper (neé Jennings). These were all people I read about in the journals and letter.
Pausing, I saw a figure wandering about near a tomb.
"Ruth? Darling? Where are you?" He must have heard me walk up because the next second, he was staring at me. "Oh. It's you. Have you seen Ruth? I've been looking for her all morning."
To my absolute horror, there were claw marks across his chest and as I looked slightly closer at the tag on his shirt, I felt my heart drop to the pit of my stomach. Colonel A. Harper.
Aaron Harper. I just walked past his headstone.
"Are you quite alright? You're looking a bit pale."
Quickly nodding, I turned around to get out of the cemetery.
"Fine. Not sure where Ruth is, but I have to go, bye."
Closing the gates behind me, I watched as the figure of Aaron Harper gradually disappeared.
Jogging back to the house, I was slightly out of breath by the time I slammed the door shut to the kitchen.
"Were you being chased by wolves or something?"
Looking up, I saw Wooyoung standing by the island looking at me weirdly.
Taking a few quick strides to stand opposite Wooyoung, I leaned my elbows down on the counter.
"Quick question. Has anything weird ever happened here to you or any of the guys?"
Wooyoung stared at me for a second, "What? Why?"
"I'm pretty sure this place has ghosts."
"Ghosts? What about them?"
Seonghwa came into the kitchen and leaned on the counter next to me, intrigued by the conversation we were having.
"I was just saying that this place is haunted."
Seonghwa shared a looked with Wooyoung before turning back to look at me, "What makes you think that?"
I stared at them blankly for a minute before pointing a finger out, "What makes me th- I literally just saw a guy who was probably alive in the 1800s with claw marks across his chest looking for his wife – who, by the way, then asked me if I saw her – before disappearing into thin air."
They remained silent before Wooyoung just shrugged, "I mean, it's never happened to us before so, like, congratulations?"
Rolling my eyes, I reached an arm across and whacked Wooyoung on the shoulder, "Oh yeah, just what I wanted, a ghost who was probably mauled to death go 'oh, it's you, have you seen my wife'."
Glancing over at Seonghwa, I scrunched my face up in confusion, "Why are you in your full suit?"
"I'm heading into town with Yeosang, you wanna join us?"
I was just about to decline, but then remembered that there was a little shop that may have something I wanted.
"Sure, I want to pick somethings up as well."
Tumblr media
Wooyoung watched as the car drove off before making his way into the back garden.
"AARON! GET YOUR ASS OVER HERE YOU DIMWIT!"
A figure materialised in front of Wooyoung sporting a wide grin, "You called for me?"
Wooyoung thwacked the back of Aaron's head, "Don't do shit like that with Y/N."
Groaning, Aaron rubbed the sore spot, "I hate that you can actually touch me."
"Ah yes, the pro of having a mother who practised necromancy. You catch on to some things. Now, quit trying to scare Y/N. She looked like she was going to faint."
Aaron let out a laugh, "I know, she looked so pale. Just so you know, Joong told me to do that. He wanted to give her a little push."
Wooyoung shook his head before turning to head back inside, "I think that just pushed her to think she's lost her mind instead of finding out the truth."
Tumblr media
Stepping out of the car, I walked beside Yeosang as we made our way through the town centre.
"Oh! Yeosang, dear."
Turning my head to the side, I watched as a woman around Aunt Jenna's age make her way over to us.
"I'm so glad that I've caught you! I've found where -"
"Mrs Hunter, why don't we talk about this over some tea," Yeosang looked back at us, "I'll meet you guys back at the car, yeah?"
Turning my gaze to Seonghwa, he must've caught on to my confusion.
"Mrs Hunter was a friend of your aunt's, she likes catching up with us when she sees us."
"Okay, well, um, I'm heading to the bookstore, you get whatever it is that you need, and we'll meet back at the car? Though to be fair, you'll probably find me in that gelato parlour next to where we parked."
Grinning, I parted ways with Seonghwa and headed to the little run-down bookstore around the corner.
While there were other bookstores in the area, I specifically wanted to go to this one because the owner was a small, elderly lady who was very superstitious, so along with old books on spells and potions, there were also crystals and incense sold.
Entering the bookstore, I greeted the owner with a smile, "Good morning, Mrs Stewart."
"Hello, dear, what can I do for you?"
Pulling out a piece of paper from my pocket, I passed it to her.
"I was wondering if you had these in stock?"
Pulling on her glasses from around her neck, Mrs Stewart held the paper up, "Sage, Palo Santo, rock salt."
She hurried along the back before returning with her arms full, "Here you go dear. Are you experiencing some negative energies at home?"
Pulling out my wallet, I handed her my card before placing all of the items into my tote bag.
"Something like that. I just wanted to try this out."
"Well, these will certainly do the trick."
Thanking her, I left the shop and headed to the bookstore on the opposite side of the road.
Tumblr media
Sitting down on the floor of my bedroom, I stared at the items placed in front of me.
"How the hell am I going to use these without looking crazy."
As I mulled over the question, my eyes zoned in on the 4 large pieces of rock salt.
"Hey, Y/N? Have you – Why do you have sticks on your floor?"
Looking up, I saw San poke his head in, looking very confused.
"In. And close the door behind you, will you?"
San padded along the carpet and sat down across from me, picking up a Palo Santo stick as he did so.
"I'm sorry, but what the hell are these?"
"That is a Palo Santo stick, apparently, you burn them to get rid of spirits or bad energy or something, the same goes with the sage and rock salt, though you place the rock salt on the 4 corners outside of your house."
San stared at me blankly before shaking his head, "Why exactly?"
"Because it feels like the right thing to do. I don't know, but like this place is giving me a I'm-slightly-dark-but-not-that-dark-I-may-have-spirits vibe, okay?"
San picked up the sage, "So what? You're gonna burn sage and paul-pal whatever stick all around the house?"
Shaking my head, I plucked the sage and Palo Santo stick from his hands, "No, I'm gonna burn them in my room. I don't care if there are actual spirits in this house, I just don't want them in my room."
I saw the corners of San's mouth twitch as he stared at me in disbelief, "You're unbelievable. Everyone else would try to get rid of it 100%, you on the other hand, just don't want it in your room"
Handing San two rock salts, we started our way downstairs, "Come on, you're helping me put these on the four corners." Pausing, I looked at the flower beds Seonghwa planted. "Maybe bury them in the four corners. Seonghwa might throw them away if he saw them in his flower beds."
Grabbing a trowel each, we started putting the rock salts into the ground, working quickly so that no one would see us and ask questions.
Tumblr media
That night, I asked Mingi and San to stay in my room, because as much as I didn't want to admit it, that person-spirit-thingy did actually scare me.
After burning the sage, the three of us sat in bed for a bit just talking about our day, and I don't know if it was my imagination or something, but when I mentioned the figure I saw in the cemetery, the both of them just froze for a bit before they carried on with the conversation.
We didn't talk for long though because I was tired from all the running and they were tired from work.
Standing at a round table, I glanced around and noticed that Wooyoung and Seonghwa were beside me.
Focusing on the table I noticed that there were candles lit, as well as powders and dried herbs in jars.
Wooyoung cracked open one of the large leather-bound books on the table, "Okay, let's get started, shall we? You grab the mortar and pestle, Seonghwa, go and melt the lard in the pot, please."
Feeling my arms start moving, I looked down, confused. I had no control over my body whatsoever.
Bringing the mortar and pestle closer, I watched as Wooyoung added all sorts of powders and herbs into it.
"Okay, mugwort, clovers, soot, vervain, you crush those into a fine powder, I'm gonna go and find the tincture."
Grabbing ahold of the pestle, I started crushing everything.
"Seonghwa." My voice was small, almost as if I was scared. "Yeo and Yunho will be alright, right?"
I saw Seonghwa glance back at me, and although he was smiling, I could see the worry in his eyes, "Of course they will, it's just a pack of werewolves. Nothing they haven't dealt with before."
"But this pack, they're different. They're more dangerous."
Seonghwa glanced back at the pot before he came over to me, "They will be fine princess, plus, we're making all this to make sure of that, yeah?"
Seeing me nod, Seonghwa went back to the pot.
Once everything was crushed I went over to Seonghwa, waiting for Wooyoung to come back.
"Okay!" Wooyoung entered with a small bottle in his hands, "Now mix in the powder and once I add the tincture, start stirring clockwise."
Mixing in the powder, Wooyoung added a few drops of tincture. We stood over the pot for 10 minutes before taking it off the fire and distributing it into two jars.
"Are you three finished? We will be leaving soon."
Looking up, Yeosang and Yunho stood at the doorway, both adorning cloaks and satchels.
I closed the lids to the jars and handed them one each.
"Rub this on your palms or on your tunics before you meet up with the pack, it'll bring you into the air if you can't outrun them. Oh, and this," Reaching into the pocket of my apron, I pulled out two cloth sachets. "If your life is in danger, squeeze the bag and the guardians will help."
Smiling at the two, I watched as they were about to leave, "And please be careful. Those werewolves. They're different."
Groaning, San felt around for the blanket, but when he couldn't feel a body beside him, he opened his eyes.
Upon looking at the sight above him, his eyes widened. Reaching his arm across the bed, San smacked Mingi in the face.
"Mingi. Mingi. Wake up."
Mingi squinted his eyes open, "What's goin- what the fuck?"
Mingi's jaw dropped when he saw what was in the air.
Suspended a few feet above the bed was a body. More specifically. Me.
San looked over to Mingi, "Should we go get Wooyoung? Or Seonghwa? They would know what to do, right?"
"No need. She'll come down soon."
The boys looked to the window, where a figure stood with its back to them.
"It's awakening."

Hey! First, I’m so sorry to hear abt the menstrual pain!! Periods are the worst especially when you’ve got really bad cramps :((
So for distractions! For the otp ask, if you’re answering the questions themselves how about 41-45 for Ruth x Ava? Or if you want something to expand into a fic, one of any of those!
I hope you feel better soon!
thank youuuu have. many ava/ruth fluff snippets ;w;
41. Which one would take their jacket it off and drape over the other one because they were visibly shivering?
Ruth nearly jumps out of her skin when something heavy and warm settles over her bare shoulders -- though she almost immediately feels silly as strong, familiar hands settle on her shoulders and then run down her arms, sending warmth washing over her in their wake.
Tired after the weird charity gala the Agency had talked them into attending, she leans back until her head is resting on Ava's shoulder.
Ava says nothing, arms settling around her with a soft contented sigh.
They'll have to leave eventually -- definitely have to say goodbye to the investors and the Council and whoever else she'd been introduced to tonight before she's truly off the hook -- but she doesn't care.
For now, they are both content to stand in the moonlight and watch it dance on the pond and fountain below them.
And that's enough.
Tumblr media
42. What's their favorite type of weather to enjoy together? (getting snowed in together, watching thunderstorms, etc.)
Ruth loves the summer in Wayhaven.
It's a strange sentence to think, even to herself, as summers had always been the worst part of the year when she was growing up nearby. All that time having to find things to do to stay away from her home when her dad was home, all that time having to face the fact that she didn't really have friends -- it had been miserable.
Now, it's the best time of year for her to talk Ava into spending time with her, just the two of them.
And Ruth isn't sure she's ever happier than she is when she's on the open road with Ava, wind in her hair, casting adoring glances at Ava's beautiful profile.
They always drive to the same place -- a cliff overlooking the sea. It's more remote than the park they'd first gone to, so Ava is always so much more comfortable to sit close beside her, shoulders brushing with every breath they take. When the sun finally sets, they often stay a little longer, lying back in the grass and watching the stars and talking about... anything. Nothing. Everything.
The way Ava smiles when they're alone like that feels just like the summer sun on her skin -- sends that same warmth washing over her like a hot shower, until all she can feel is that twinge of joy and pride that comes with being able to make Ava smile, even a little.
...she's in far, far too deep to fight this now, but she can't find it in her to regret a single second of it.
Tumblr media
43. Who would give their life for the other without a second thought?
Oh, they both would. This fact makes both of them very upset. Don't feel like writing the angst rn but IT'S COMING in my fic eventually.
Tumblr media
44. Who would dance in the kitchen making dinner? Would the other join in or watch from the doorway?
Ruth nearly startles when Ava's arms slide around her waist, though she laughs as she tilts her head to give Ava access as she presses a line of kisses to Ruth's throat.
Ruth had been humming along to the music playing from her laptop as she cooked dinner, aware of the Commander in the next room keeping an eye out for her, but uncaring enough to actually change her plans for the night. They'd been getting closer recently, crossing that unspoken line between friends and.... something else more and more.
She's still not used to the amount of pleasure she gets from such simple, soft kisses as Ava rests her chin on Ruth's shoulder and begins to sway to the music.
"...you're so beautiful," murmurs her lover, nose brushing at the corner of her jaw. "I adore you completely."
Ruth shivers visibly in Ava's arms, making them both laugh.
"You buttering me up for something, Commanding Agent?" Ruth asks, but there's no malice in it, only a gentle tease that makes Ava chuckle.
"No," Ava says truthfully, swaying a little more meaningfully, a little more purposefully now. "I just wanted to be near you."
Ruth's heart squeezes painfully in her chest, but she smiles anyway, turning her head to press a kiss to Ava's cheek.
They don't say anything else for a long while, though eventually Ruth does move her meal off of the stove and they dance a little more formally. Ava's eyes are unbelievably soft as she twirls Ruth around the little kitchen in her tiny apartment and for a little while, nothing else in the world exists but the two of them and the hazy glow of contentment surrounding them.
Tumblr media
45. Can they fall asleep without the other?
Ruth nearly shrieks when a pair of arms wrap around her in her sleep.
The stranger crawling into her bed pauses, pulling away a little and mumbling half-asleep apologies, and the familiar lilt of a soft British accent makes her relax again. Ava sinks into the mattress behind her, burying her face in the back of her neck, muscles heavy with tension that slowly seeps from her frame as she breathes in the smell of Ruth's skin.
"...alright?" Ruth asks after a moment, too sleepy to ask a full question, patting gently at Ava's hand settled on the mattress next to her stomach.
Ava sighs, curling around her a little more. "Bad dream. I'm fine now."
Ruth hums, and a distant part of her investigator mind does a few quick calculations. She knows vampires don't sleep much, but Ava's done this every few days for the past week or so now.
"Having a lot of bad dreams lately," she breathes.
She can feel Ava frown against the back of her neck as the arm around her waist tightens even more.
"...very observant of you, Detective," Ava mumbles at length, though there's a playfulness somewhere in her voice that makes Ruth snort.
Shifting so that she can lie on her back, she coaxes Ava to rest her head on her chest, slipping her fingers against the back of her neck and stroking gently as her other hand settles against Ava's upper arm, thumb lazily running back and forth against her skin where her sleeve has rolled up.
Ava melts into her and Ruth grins into the darkness. Sleep begins to tug at her again, but she mumbles with the last of her awareness, "I've got you. Sleep."
Whatever Ava mumbles in response is lost as Ruth drifts off again, though she thinks it might have been French.
...

Hiiiiiii, I just caught up on today’s chapter of Where The Hell Is The Karma so i would be remiss if I didn’t ask you to share something about it! I know it was longer than you expected and a struggle to finish- anything you want to share about that? specific scenes or character beats?
If you’d like something more general- I’m truly loving all the whump, both emotional and physical, so if you had anything you wanted to share on that, I’d love to hear it too!
Yay thank you! This chapter was a strange one for me because I plotted it out as I was writing chapter 1 and 2 so that I wasn't writing myself into a corner and in chapter 3 nothing would directly contradict what I had already written from Jamie's POV. Sooo ... when it came to writing Chapter 3 I thought I had a comprehensive plot outline that I just had to fill.
And then! As I was writing it (and I've never properly felt like this before) the characters sort of demanded their own moment in the spotlight. When I said "aw there's about 1000 words to go" I didn't have the Roy and Ruth scene, I didn't have the Simon scene, I didn't have the ransom discussions even in the plot outline. My brain just kept going, "yeah but how is this person dealing with this" and "yeah but if this thing happens how would each of these different people react" then when that turned into another paragraph it felt a disservice to not include it.
I had a little note around when they are going to Manchester that was "Roy muses about how much people love Jamie Tartt" and that sentence turned into like 5k of the chapter lol

hi Ruth! I’m coming at you for nice ask day 💖 I’ve noticed you sending some really sweet, thoughtful asks to friends (and I still remember the one you sent me) about their fics and it’s just so lovely to see 🥰 now for the question - when did you read RWRB and what made you go looking for fic?
hello hello Rae!!! :) :) I am well determined to spread the love and gratitude!! Y'all are just SO GOOD!!!! I am working so hard to not blow up everyone's inbox every time I read something. I AM TRYING.
Nice ask day is so cute. Thank you for the question. I read RWRB when it released in 2019, and I remember feeling this very foreign feeling in my chest that I didn't understand at the time, only that I felt especially seen by Alex and Henry, their crises and struggles to exist inside narrow confines of family pressure and expectation, their struggles with anxiety, and their individual journeys around self-determination. Only after the millionth reread (and my own crisis a few years ago) did I realise that oh, there's a reason I would feel a tight pressure in my chest whenever I thought about Alex. I was more like him than I thought. :)
I have been deep in the fic world for over a decade now (I wrote some especially horrific 1D fics when I was 14, thankfully scrubbed from the internet forever, never to see the light of day again). Now I just voraciously read whatever I can get my hands on. I went actively looking for fic after rereading RWRB and watching the movie for the [very, very high number]th time. No idea why I didn't earlier, but happy to have found it again. It's been helping me get through my hideously stressful dissertation. <3 reverse pomodoro method, where I write my paper for 15 minutes and read fics for 45. not going well but what can a stressed grad student do?
Since I last sent you an ask, I've made a considerable dent in your list of RWRB works and BOY HOWDY!!!! everybody needs good neighbours? yours for the afternoon? I want you I need you? call me old fashioned? you're all that i need? basically all of them?????????
<3 <3
xoxo, Ruth

6, 7, 17 for the fanfic asks
tag thing 3/3
I believe this was from this list, though my answer is super late
6. Have you written any fanfictions featuring OCs? If so, elaborate!
I actually have a repository for my Star Wars OC fics now. Hoping to put some more in there to fill upcoming whumptober prompts, it was kind of inspired by the animated short series Visions, in that it could kind of bend the rules of canon and not have to have anything to do with the main narrative. A good exercise in character development, I think. There are a couple upcoming OCs (‘dark ocean’ has one main one that helps out our MCs and I have this whole long 4 part series planned about a serial killer that spans 40 years, and while 3 parts feature canon characters, the 4th will, in theory, be almost all OCs) and I feel like most fics have to have at least 1-2, right?
And I'm kind of sad that it’s unlikely that I’ll ever finish the ‘Nordic noir’-style fic that was supposed to be the continuation to my main AU series, because Astrid, my first and most beloved OC, was going to make a comeback and play a slightly larger role. She is my most beloved because I was actually really nervous to include her because 1) past experiences especially from my former fandom days back in the 00s made me wary of OCs, especially female ones, 2) she had to deliver a lot of exposition, 3) it was exposition on a sort of controversial topic, 4) yeah I was kind of using her as a mouthpiece for my own ideas about said controversial fandom topic. So I was super nervous but she was well-received and that gave me a lot more confidence to write more OCs into fics.
7. What’s a troupe you love to write?
I am assuming this is supposed to say ‘trope’ but you know me I love an ensemble (though also ensemble casts can be so hard to write). Jk, yeah tropes, idk I like a whole range of hurt/comfort tropes, that’s definitely where I’m most comfortable. Magical exhaustion/magical consequences, always fun. ‘There was only one bed’, classic. I feel like I keep having things with ghosts in them, don’t know if that counts as a trope. ‘___ as death/grief metaphor’. I also keep writing about nightmares, so much that I had to have a little talk with myself on this current rewrite about nightmares and cut like 70% of them.
17. Are there any writers and/of stories that you consider an influence?
I think early writing inspiration came from Tamora Pierce, particularly her Circle of Magic series (see previous post about books that have stuck with me). Definitely turned me on to the idea of like, magical found families. Tamsyn Muir I feel like I have a weird relationship to because there’s a part of me that’s like…mad I didn’t think of it first but definitely once I got over that she’s for sure inspired me to just go so much harder on the death metaphors and the descriptions of corpses, so that’s fun. I’m trying to remember how I filled out this question for NaNoWriMo way back in the day…idk I think American Gods is an influential single-story for me. I can’t think of any other big authors but also in terms of fandom writers who influenced me, I’ll admit to being influenced to loving long, plotty Star Wars fics by ruth baulding, the only reason I still have an open fanfiction.net account, and when I was getting back into writing fic around 2018 or so, I was both inspired and encouraged by @veliseraptor so thank you so much <3
Ok, I have to go clean my apartment now, feel free to send any other questions from this list or from the other ask game thing (see tagged thing 1/3), and I will answer them when I return!

[WP] “At Power Pre-K, we have all sorts of activities to nurture the budding superhero, villain, monster, titan, or…um, what exactly IS your child?” [u/codeScramble - Reddit]
~Lost in My World~
The Atlas Educational Center, since 1982, has been a pillar in the "enhanced" community. From superheroes to supervillains, from Kijus to Titans, even the horrors of the unknown found their way through Atlas' hollowed halls. Regardless of gender, race, religion, state of being, or dimensional status, Atlas is here for you!
As the bell sounds, hoards of children rush out of their classrooms and make their way to the exits. Fighting against the waves of children are a couple. A man with glossy black hair and wearing a cheap grey suit that's one size too big, and a faceless feminine-looking robot in a teal nurse uniform with a massive stain on its chest.
"I still can't believe you bought a suit," groaned the robot.
"I thought you wanted me to look more professional?" asked the man.
"You look like you hang around sports bars looking to "loan" people money," said the robot. "The fact that I'm currently wearing vomit and still look better than you is just pathetic."
"Welp, it's a good thing you didn't love me for my looks," said the man. "Next door on the right." The two stop before a blue door labeled "After School Care." The two look through the door's window, seeing kids playing with each other and an eight-foot, yellow-scaled half-dragon man reading a book to a group of kids.
"Scans aren't picking up anything out of the ordinary," said the robot.
"Why doesn't that make me feel any better," said the man. The half-dragon noticed the two and motioned them to come inside. "Any last words?"
"Yeah," said the robot as they opened the door, "Don't [CENSORED] up." The man wipes his hair before following the robot inside as the half-dragon sends the children around him away.
"Hello, I'm Mr. Thune. I'm with the front office," said Mr. Thune as he shook the robot's hand. "Are you Barbie's parents?"
"Barbie?" asked the robot.
"I'm her dad, Elliot," said Elliot, shaking Mr. Thune's hand, "just call me "Elli." This Barbie's...birth mother, Ruth, model designation R_0tH." Mr. Thune looked at his hand as hair grease dripped from it. "I am so sorry."
"No worries," said Mr. Thune. With the flick of his wrist, his hand suddenly burst into flames, evaporating the grease from his hand. "Follow me." Mr. Thune guides the two to a door at the room's far corner. Meanwhile, Ruth stares daggers at Elli.
"You named it?!" whispered Ruth.
"She named herself," whispered Bob. "Besides, it's kinda fitting if you think about it."
"I can see how you'd think that," said Ruth. "Also, what did we talk about using my real model?"
"Hey! It took a lot of work getting Bee into this place," said Elli, "I'm not risking getting her kicked out just because you're- "
"*Ahem*," Inturupted Mr. Thune as he held open the door, "right this way." The two regain what little composure they had before walking into Mr. Thune's office. Mr. Thune then pulls a stone with a rune carved into it. He whispers into the stone, flames flowing from his mouth into rune, causing it to glow orange. Mr. Thune tosses the stone back into the Daycare room, and it transforms into a golem made of rock and amber. A lizard child points at the golem.
"It's Mr. Pebbles!" yelled the child, followed by the frantic cheers of the other children. Mr. Pebbles whines as he looks back at Mr. Thune, who's slowly closing the door behind him.
"Fifteen minutes, twenty minutes tops," said Mr. Thune as he closed the door just before seeing the children pounce on Mr. Pebbles. With a heavy sigh, Mr. Thune walks over to his desk and sits across from Bob and Abbi. "Anyway, let me start off by saying that your daughter is not in any trouble."
"Oh, thank god!" muttered Elli, relieved.
"However, we do have some- " Mr. Thune pauses as he looks around his room. "questions. First off, is there any genetic or magical history that we should know about, anything you may have forgotten to put on her forms?"
"Nothing I know of," said Elli. "She doesn't like basil." Ruth stealthily kicks Elli's shin under the desk.
"All of its information is up to date," said Ruth. "Is there something wrong?"
"No, nothing's wrong," said Mr. Thune. "It's just that...here at AEC, we run all of our students through a genetic database to help better identify their needs or any assistance they may need now or in the future. Now, I mean no disrespect, but neither of you is Barbie's genetic parent, correct?
"No," answered Ruth.
"But we're her parents where it counts!" Elli interjected.
"I promise you, that is not in question," said Mr. Thune. The half-dragon's ears perk up suddenly as he stares intensely at Bob. "We've just noticed some abnormalities that I thought you could help us identify."
"Uh...like what, exactly," asked Elli, nervously.
"Well, for starters," said Mr. Thune, "your daughter seems to have a habit of disappearing."
"Like, skipping class?" asked Elli.
"Oddly no," answered Mr. Thune, "AEC has the most advanced surveillance system of all our neighboring universes through the use of science, magic, and temporal machinations. However, it seems your daughter can avoid detection completely for short periods." Ruth sits up in her chair.
"You're implying it has the ability to hide its entire existence from time itself," said Ruth. "That's impossible."
"Not for Barbie, it seems," said Mr. Thune. "We've asked her how she does it, and her response is like any child her age, "I don't know. At first, we thought she may have been some old god or eldritch being or maybe just a re-incarnated pillar of reality. Those theories eventually proved false."
"Is that...good?" asked Elli. Mr. Thune sat silently for a moment as his gaze shifted to Ruth. "Is that a "no?"
"I'll be frank with you," said Mr. Thune. "As an elder dragon, I have seen the death and birth of universes more times than even fifth-dimensional beings can imagine, and in all that time, I have never felt, let alone seen, a being as unique as Barbie." Mr. Thune pulls a pamphlet from a desk drawer and slides it in front of Elli and Ruth.
"There is a universe known as the Index, dedicated to capturing all the knowledge of the multiverse and every previous iteration of it. It may know what Barbie truly is and her capabilities."
"But?" asked Ruth.
"But," continued Mr. Thune, "due to the universe's unique properties, it is unlikely you could accompany her to Index." Ruth and Elli tense up at the thought. "Now, this is by no means mandatory. Barbie has been a model student, has excellent behavior and stellar grades, and is well-liked by almost everyone. However, some would feel more comfortable having a better idea of what exactly your daughter is."
"Why? She's perfect," said Elli, "that's all that matters."
"Elli..." said Ruth.
"No!" interrupted Elli, "I don't care if some fancy school board or a few parents feel uncomfortable around my kid. From what I've heard, she's done nothing but what was asked of her and then some!"
"Sir, please," said Mr. Thune, "nothing's set in stone. I just wanted to make sure that you're aware..." Elli nearly jumps out of his seat and stares down Mr. Thune.
"Save it! I don't need you or some universe to tell me my little girl's special!" said Elli, "I get a reminder every morning when she wakes me up to take her to school!" Ruth grabs Elli's shoulder, and the two look at each other before Abbi eases him away from Mr. Thune.
Elli breaks free of Ruth's grasp and walks towards the door. As he gets closer, the sounds of children whispering and running away can be heard on the other side. All Ruth can do is watch as Elli storms out of the office.
"I'm sorry," said Mr. Thune. "I had no intention of upsetting..."
"It's fine," said Ruth, "emotions run high when it comes to her. Sometimes, he just cares too much."
"In my line of work, there's no such thing," said Mr. Thune. Ruth takes the pamphlet and looks over it for a second. "It's yours if you want it?"
"...no thank you," said Ruth as she returned the pamphlet to the desk. "I should probably chase after him before he angrily shows people baby pictures. Thank you for your time."
"Not a problem. I'll have them send your daughter to the front office," said Mr. Thune. Ruth nods as she leaves the office, closing the door behind her. With a deep, raspy breath, Mr. Thune blasts a cloud of ash from his nostrils that quickly fills the room. The sound of muffled coughing could be heard all around the room as several random objects began to shake.
"You know, it's rude to eavesdrop on adult conversations," said Mr. Thune as he stood up from his chair. "Come on, your parents are waiting for you."
Suddenly, several books, pens, paper, as well as other objects became solid black as they melted into liquids. The black liquids then flowed collectively into one of the chairs facing Mr. Thune, combining into a three-foot-tall humanoid figure. Three balls of light hovered from the ceiling light above the black figure.
Two of the lights placed themselves on the black figure's head, acting as their eyes, while the last one set itself where the heart would be. The black figure then transformed into a pale, nearly white-skinned little girl with chin-length messy black hair and equally messy pigtails. The girl wore a grey dress with a teal jacket, mismatched socks, and matching mismatched sneakers.
The Barbie sheepishly looked up at Mr. Thune as she made her backpack appear.
"I'm sorry my daddy got mad," said Barbie.
"It's ok, he was just scared," said Mr. Thune.
"I know," said Barbie. Mr. Thune walks over to Barbie but barely passes his desk before Barbie hugs his legs. "I don't want my parents to be scared of me."
"Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey," said Mr. Thune as he kneeled to meet Barbie. "If I've learned anything today, it's that neater of your parents are scared of you. They...they just want what's best for you, and sometimes it's hard to know what that is."
"Because they don't know what I am?" asked Barbie.
"They know who you are," said Mr. Thune. "You're Barbie, the girl who can do anything! And that's enough." Barbie wipes her face and smiles. "There's that superstar smile. Come on, let's get you to the office so I don't get yelled at again."

TGIWednesday: I feel a nap coming on…
"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime" - Lao Tzu
Tumblr media
TGIWednesday News
My sweet momma, aka Granny Ruth, used to say, “I feel a nap comin' on.”  Clearly this is generational lol!  My youngest son Hunter’s youngest daughter Blake burst out in tears during my last visit, and it seemed like, for no good reason at all.  When her mom asked her “What’s wrong?” she fought back more tears and through trembling cheeks said, “I don’t think I took a long enough nap at school!”  Amazing, at 5 years old she is wildly self-aware.  How is your sleep?  If you cringed reading that question, you need to address it.  My family practice doctor and friend of decades says, “If people could get 2 or 3 nights of good sleep they’d heal faster.” Amen to that (and we have an audio for improving your sleep here) Sleep is about patterning, so make every effort to go to bed at the same time every night, and prior to that, if you can take a hot shower/bath or hot tub - even better.  Do your best to turn off the overthinking.  If you’re depressed, you’re stuck in the past... have anxiety/stress/tension? worried about the future? Make every effort to be fully present and we’ll see you as getting healthier as you read this here and now!

"It was awesome speaking with you yesterday!  My hip felt great after our appointment, I went to yoga last night, slept incredibly well, and I woke up with almost no pain in my hip and legs - and some actual flexibility - what an exciting and hopeful thing!  As I mentioned to you, two different orthopedic doctors were ready to do hip surgery, but doing Qigong and now with this clearing and your recommendations, I am confident I can postpone indefinitely!  Also, the sway testing and pendulum was wild to experience, and thank you for clearing my pendulum and explaining the best way to use it!  You are so much fun, and have an amazing gift!  I am looking forward to diving into the rest of the materials." - Renée D. / New York
