5. How do they feel about their family? Chosen and/or biological?

The three of them are each others' chosen family in every sense of the word and they have so much love for each other, even if they show it by being annoying on purpose (hello aikarico). Atlaki and Cas have grown somewhat distant from the Pale Tree over the years, but they don't hate her.

Aikarico's biological parents are dead, and she only knew her mother for a very brief time, but she holds a lot of resentment towards them for the bullying she endured as a cub in the Legions. Little does she know, before they died, they were planning to run away to Lion's Arch to give her a peaceful, war-free childhood. They never got the chance.

13. Is there anyone they'd like to be closer to than they are?

Atlaki is very content with only being close to his small bubble of people, and Cassien is largely the same, although more open to new connections. Aikarico has her eyes set on @the-tired-commander's Zytarra!

17. How talkative are they?

Atlaki and Aikarico are complete opposite ends of the spectrum - Atlaki would be content to listen to every conversation, whilst Aikarico needs you to know her every waking thought. Cassien is in the middle, a bit closer to Atlaki!

20. Any song(s) that you feel represent your character best?

Your new julisuba fic is making me go insane btw. I am so sososo normal about them. Normal. It's so good! The earrings, the knight outfit colors, turning both heinkel and Subaru into sopping wet cats in the same fic, the scars, the poison reminding him of Todd, the callback to the armor around julius' heart, the Emilia bits, ,,,,, the smutttt,,,, all of it was exquisite!!

{ 💥 COLLISON - what emotions do they have trouble dealing with? !!

She is pretty intent on her whole 'I must conceal my emotions' thing, but she is also human and that doesn't always work out. She believes she cannot achieve her goals if she doesn't dispense with them. If she weeps for every person she comes across, she will get nowhere. If she lets the words of her enemies get to her head, they will obtain the victory she so desperately wants.

She can deal with anger, annoyance, and even sorrow. She's felt them before. She muses about how she doesn't cry anymore for she has no tears left to shed. Her nightmares plague her because of these emotions that she suppresses, reminding her of them when she closes her eyes.

But also, I think a part of her has trouble dealing with emotions of genuine adoration and cherishment. She can count on one hand the amount of people she trusts, but when someone reaches their own palm out to her? When they show true care? She wants to believe it, but there is the fear that it will vanish before she can fully embrace it. They need to prove themselves to her- Prove that what they're expressing is true.

2. Did you reread anything? What?

I relistened to the whole Southern Reach trilogy in preparation for absolution, as well as listening to Dune and The Left Hand of Darkness again!

10. What was your favorite new release of the year?

tbh i think the only things i read that were released this year are Failure to Comply by Cavar and Absolution by Jeff Vandermeer. without having finished the latter yet, it might have to be failure to comply! but what a tough choice...absolution is an interesting addition and it has the same language that i liked about the rest of the series, but im leaning towards your take of not really a necessary addition. it felt very much like i was wading through ten years of notes and exploring the world, which is still fun! but failure to comply set a fire in my head and kept me thinking about the mechanics of language and storytelling, as well as being lined up with disability studies which I've dipped into this year as well, so I think that might take the new favorite spot

22. What's the longest book you read?

I can't quite remember if it was this year or late last year, but I'm pretty sure it's House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski at 710 pages. tentative second place goes to Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco at 633 pages. both incredible reads!

my own question: Are there any phrases/sentences that stuck in your brain from this year's reading? Why?

it's so funny, as i sent you my ask i was like "wait i don't know if i have an answer for this off the top of my head", and honestly I had so many quotations marked from this year's reading that it was hard to pick one! but I think I have a good answer that i feel like reflects a lot of what I've learned from my reading and reflection this year.

the whole thing is a great and quick read, but i came across these words, in "The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction" by Ursula K. LeGuin, discussing fiction in the context of theories which suggest that the first cultural inventions in human history were a sling or carrier bag/container:

...One of the entries in this glossary is heroism, defined as "botulism". And hero, in Woolf's dictionary, is "bottle"...I now propose the bottle as hero.

...I differ with all of this. I would go so far as to say that the natural, proper, fitting shape of the novel might be that of a sack, a bag. A book holds words. Words hold things. They bear meanings. A novel is a medicine bundle, holding things in a particular, powerful relation to one another and to us.

...That is why I like novels: instead of heroes they have people in them. if you’re ever in the position to choose between giving up and accepting defeat, and actually trying to fight the ancient unkillable god that is about to peel apart reality like a string cheese, remember this: scientifically speaking, you might as well give it a shot!

1.there were trees at the beginning of the world! there were trees so long ago that they predate bacteria that causes wood to decay. when a tree fell, it would lie there in stasis and there wasn’t any way of breaking down wood xylem on a molecular level in that way.

2. it seems obvious to say, but wood eating bacteria are literally incapable of comprehending what they’re breaking down. It’s just not information conciously available to a microorganism. they don’t know what they’re deconstructing, where it came from, bacteria have no way to even fathom the existence of a tree as a concept.

3. Regardless of the facts above, the world we live in today is a world where wood inevitably decomposes

it is worth fighting the unkillable god no matter how pointless it seems. it is worth taking the risk even though youre trying to accomplish something impossible. the reality in which you live was also once reality in which trees didn’t rot. You live in a reality that allows for existence before the possibility of destruction. you live in a reality where uncomprehending microbes break down matter that is so far beyond the scope of their comprehension that it feels comical to specify something so obvious. you live in a reality that occasionally allows unshakeable physical truths to be altered with no warning.

It is worth fighting the unkillable god because trees are so old they predate the source of their destruction, and it still did not spare them. It is worth fighting the unkillable god because bacteria rots unthinkingly, because there is room in our cosmos for destruction without comprehension on the part of the destroyer. It is worth fighting the unkillable god because now and then reality retracts the promise of immortality without fanfare, and when that happens there is no mercy for the ancient. the unmaking is not softer for the desecrators ignorance. for all things, existence is endless until the exact point where it ends.

so you might as well try to kill the unkillable god. it doesn’t seem likely, but at the beginning of the world, trees didn’t rot. so you never know! you never know
