You brought up hunger pains being felt and it immediately made me think of how bad it would be for the strawhats as kids when sanji is stuck on that island with Zeff, starving. And that led to a different rabbit hole thought of Sanji’s backstory in general with how much pain that kid was forced to endure. Yes, all the strawhats had to deal with pain as kids, but i think Sanji’s had the most physical pain? And now im remembering how chopper was literally shot at... hm... okay- so just in general, the shared pain is very interesting with all the strawhats as kids mainly because of their backstories

exactly ! thats why in my first post about soulscar luffy has light blue marks that ace and sabo dont. that is sanji

with sanji’s abuse happening so young, his pain was the most common and people like usopp, luffy, nami, and zoro kind of grew up with it (chopper did not create soulscars for others until after he ate the fruit). it’s like, whats happening to this one rhat’s leaving us in so much pain ?

and then the two year pause where hurt doesnt happen as often, theyre like oh he mustve found somewhere safe, thank goodness. then when he gets stranded, it’s such an acute sense of hunger that everyone can feel it like they’re truly hungry, and not even luffy eating more helps stifle the feeling

the strawhats all suffered in their childhood, and that makes them all familiar with pain early on (especially pain from luffy and sanji). the adults, meanwhile, are sort of hinted in that they’re soulmates are younger since they went years with only three or four, and then suddenly as these new ones start popping up, so they’re a little concerned but it’s not like they can do anything

i think i exhausted most of my options already but i think it’s worth mentioning that asl becomes brothers a little sooner here ! ace and sabo didnt know u can have more than one soulmate, so when they see this little kid with the a scar on his cheek that looks just like their mark, ace gets defensive because he’s already sabo’s soulmate so this kid can’t be theirs. ace still throws him around because he’s stubborn but tones it down when he sees that it’s also affecting sabo and sure as shit they’re supposed to be bonded

they’re not completely not hostile but they’re not as bad as they could be, if only so they don’t have to deal with unnecessary pain. but this time when luffy’s captured by porchemy, it doesn’t take them the entire day to rescue him because they immediately feel the first hit and sudden the smattering of red on their faces is impossible to ignore

also, hunger pains can be shared through the bond ! it doesn’t linger as long as it would for the person starving, but it pangs in ur stomach as a way to let the soulmate know that they may be fine and unmarked externally, but they’re still hurting and it’d be preferred if they got help

asl have become used to hunger, what with living in a jungle and foraging for their own food which sometimes means days they dont all get what they need, so they’re able to push this aside when needed. when ace set out and was stuck on that island, though, luffy could feel the distant ache of hunger and would thoughtlessly eat more in an attempt to relieve it. him and ace would constantly use the marks as a way to view the progress of their journeys

on the topic of external pain, internal injuries don’t often create a mark unless it’s something that causes bruising beneath the skin; ie some internal bleeding, bruised/broken ribs, etc. other internal injuries like, say, appendicitis, muscle tears, some other types of internal bleeding, or something with the organs will mainly be felt and not seen. it’s also possible for someone to be so wracked with grief/anxiousness/fear that the tightness in their chest can very faintly crawl through the bond, though this does not happen often

oooo i love your soulmate au! I gotta ask tho, what would the others feel when Luffy gets into a fight? especially Sabo because I imagine that he just wakes up and theres a BUNCH of new marks on him because of Luffy and he doesn't even know!!! 😭

LMAO poor sabo, the fact that he doesnt know his soulmate is driving him crazy even though it feels like he should. it creates a bit of doubt

usually when theyre fighting alongside luffy it’s possible for them to push aside the pain that isnt theirs since they’re already ignoring their own pain for the sake of the fight. their pain meshes with each other’s

when they’re on the sidelines is when they’re really able to register it. it’s hard, and they want nothing more than to jump in to help or maybe even just to mask his pain with theirs (but they never do this cuz they’re selfish, but not so much as to make him feel more than he has to), but such is the way of the soulbond—you are to share their scars and their hurt and you are to love them anyway

I just had a thought about impel down and the soulmate au. Luffy almost died from poison, it may not be a very visible wound, but it still hurt like hell from what i could tell. How would that show up for all his soul mates? Would it even leave a proper mark? I feel like all the strawhats during their time being separated over the time skip would have so much added onto their canon feelings mainly because of the fact they can feel whats happening to their captain. It must be awful knowing and feeling someone you love is going throigh horrible pain but you cant so anything to help.

Also, do you think ace would feel happy anytime he noticed a new soul mark from luffy? Knowing his brother is still alive and adventuring? (And vis versa for luffy)

hmm, i’m not sure internal injuries would show up, but the poison burning his skin could be a bit like a flickering of marks everywhere across his soulmates’ bodies. it’s a little like, hey this is so overwhelming not even the bond knows what to do about it

it’s a terrible thing, and it further builds onto their determination to support luffy and do whatever they can to make it back and stick by his side

ace would feel pride knowing his little brother is out there making waves, but he’s always been a big brother before a pirate, and he cant help but worry worry worry whenever luffy gets hurt to a larger degree. like when luffy was fighting arlong and teeth marks kept showing up all over, or when crocodile stabbed him (horrifying to feel), or when he was climbing up drum—he’s proud because hell yeah thats his brother being an awesome pirate, but also thats his brother being a pirate and he cant not worry about him

luffy would quite like it i think, even though ace is a logia so he doesnt get hurt as often. though this also means that most likely feels it when blackbeard takes him down. not sure what this would lead to, if he’d still believe thwt ace is capable of protecting himself, but it’s there

I love it so much when creators are happy to infodump about their stuff! The way you say the soulmate au works is so fascinating to me because i usually dont get into the genre with how many that are purely romantic. Im assuming each color represents a different soulmate? I wonder what sabo would think about his soul marks with his amnesia. Would they trigger any memories for him? Or does he just think about who his soulmates could be? Also, like you mentioned, ace and luffy noticing the random new navy blue marks that could only come from sabo. They're reactions would be interesting to see :)

Semi-dark side note: if a dead body were to somehow get cut or bruised, would that leave a soul mark on their soulmate(s)? Adding onto that (if its the case): would ace and luffy assume thats why they're getting new soul marks from their 'dead' brother?

YES IT IS MY FAVORITE THING !!!!

yes all the colors represent them !! if they don’t have a specific theme/motif/whatever, like robin + flowers and nami + oranges, then i resort to shapes and lines and textures i think would match them.

for example, to me luffy’s marks (mostly red for Captain, streaks of yellow for Brother) appear similar to oil pastels; they stain your fingers and stick to you stubbornly, just like the boy himself (at least in my experience). sabo is different shades of blue but mostly royal and navy, and i see his mark being precise lines that curve into each other, similar to an ink pen. ace has his flames, and so his marks are bursts of oranges and reds that vary in intensity depending on the size. they could also look like they’re drawn from chalk instead of just stylized flame but i haven’t decided if i wanna keep that yet

it could trigger some memories, especially luffy’s scar since it’s such a distinctive mark. while it doesn’t return his memories, it makes him curious about who this monkey d. luffy is if he appears to be his soulmate. and when will i see the orange one ?

hmm, good question. i could see it happening if the body wasn’t preserved or anything, like in the middle of a battlefield, but i also think the pain-sharing might end there. with the death of their soulmate, they no longer have the other piece of their self. it’s like calling out and only receiving an echo in response—there’s no one there for them to bond to.

ace and luffy might not know that, so they could possibly think of what you mentioned for a while ! then as time goes on they’re like, wait, if he’s been at the bottom of the sea all this time, why can we still feel things so clearly ?

Soulmate au

Sooo what happens in marineford

luffy is already hurting so bad and teetering into his mental break, he hardly notices the burst of orange and red fire that marks his chest. it doesn’t really matter anyway, because it gets burned off just a few minutes later

sabo doesn’t understand why his body’s suddenly burning and he has one soulscar appear before another quickly over laps it until the day he regains his memories. if luffy were awake, he’d have felt how the grief was so severe it carried over the bond

the strawhats, meanwhile, feel a little like their failure is getting rubbed in their face. it hurts almost as much as the marks on their chests do

For the soulmate thing, it says they share pain, right? So does that mean when luffy got his 'x' scar, the other strawhats felt all that? Or is it a dulled version of the pain? Same with when sabo 'died', luffy and ace would've gotten the face scar, right? Wouldn't this change a bit of that part of the story? (Sorry if you haven't thought about it a lot. I just love the idea and want to know more) :)

yes ! they feel everything.

because the strawhats are such a large group, though, the world basically makes it a little easier on them by making it so that they can feel the most severe pains first, while the little things like bruises and papercuts aren’t felt as much. this is so they’re not constantly hurting. it’s all about severity

(when the number of soulmates is a more manageable number, like 1-3, this does not apply)

but yes they do feel everything. down to the very last detail

and yes, ace and luffy do feel and get sabo’s scar ! when a person dies, their soulmate will receive a soulscar in the shape of the wound that killed them, if there was one. (ie if someone was stabbed in the stomach, their soulmate would feel the pain and receive a mark, and it remains just as any other scar would because the dead cannot heal.) because of this, they did not immediately know that sabo hadn’t died.

and yeah it would chabge a little lol. it’s a little hard to ignore the blue and navy scratches that start showing up on their fingers when they can see it happen and feel the sting
