Man, if I had a nickel for every award-winning comedy series that answers the question "what if capitalism ruined the afterlife?" I would have two nickels. Which I realize isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice right?

man, i wish The Good Place would've been more upfront about how the entire "soulmates" concept was literally just made up by The Bad Place for Michael's torture experiment. the show never outright acknowledges this, and yet, towards the end of season 1, a huge portion of the conflict and torture comes about through figuring out who likes who and the moral implications of confessing love and the expectations of love versus "dying alone" as it were. and i'm actually kind of frustrated they never brought it up again! the show takes soulmates as a real concept up until like...the series finale, maybe? if i remember correctly?
if only the show's creators had taken one teeny tiny step forward and been more overt about our society's views on love literally equating to torture. but alas, alloromantic folks will never take that extra logical step. alloromantic people accidentally imply all the time that, on some subconscious level, they understand that the societal weight we put on romance is oppressive and stifling. AND YET. it's still too scary for them to outright denounce romance, because it holds too much social and cultural weight (as both a concept and an institution). so that's fucking frustrating.
it's like...yes, you're literally so close to understanding the problem here, guys. im begging you to just make the connection and say it outright.

please don’t ever become a stranger | 18.3k words
Mike isn’t sure how much time passes—how long they stay there, foreheads pressed against each other, holding onto one another’s hands like they’re scared to let go. But finally, Mike finds the courage in him to open his eyes and whisper, “I wish we had more time together.”
Because isn’t that what they’ve been missing all along? Time. They’ve never had more than a few months together before being rebooted, and even now, the longest the two of them have gotten to interact, the universe is separating them again. It’s as if every single fucking time the two of them get close and begin to fall in love, they have to start over again.
Now, knowing the full extent of their shared history, Mike just wants more time with Will. That’s all he wants.
Or:
The Good Place season 3 finale, but make it Byler.
—
the tgp brain rot is so real right now, you guys. if you’ve had to interact with me at all this week, i apologize for dragging you back into your tgp brain rots with me.
also, let the record show that i gave suni @astrobei like three different tgp fic options, and she went with the most devastating idea i had. so she is an accomplice to the crime that is this fic.
anyways, enjoy this late birthday fic for my dear suni, whom i love very very very much <3
oh and here’s the playlist full of sad songs that remind me of this fic.
(also a big thank you to @messrsbyler for helping me with this moodboard!!!!!)

The Good Place and MSP: Pacing and Narrative Structure [a crossover for a probably tiny audience]
this post will contain spoilers for The Good Place and My School President so be forewarned!
I was watching a couple of videos about The Good Place by the youtube channel Pillar of Garbage (this one and this one) and it sparked some *thoughts* which reminded me of one of my powerpoint presentations on MSP that I made.
Basically, The Good Place (TGP) and My School President (MSP) have an atypical narrative structure and in particular atypical pacing compared to other shows like them or the shows we might expect them to be.
Firstly, both shows have “premature” big reveals:
halfway through the first season of TGP, Eleanor admits that she is in the Good Place by mistake, instead of filling an entire season or more with her hijinks as she tries to hide that fact
MSP establishes that Tinn is not an unmoved cool guy out to get Gun but in fact a soft, pining gay romantic in the first episode, a reveal which in other shows hasn’t happened until the mid-point of the season or even the very end
Secondly, both shows move through plot lines more quickly than other shows would:
TGP introduces several season- or episode-spanning concepts and then move past them with in an episode or two: e.g., season 2 of TGP starts with all the characters being rebooted in a second go-round of the Good Place experiment, and it seems the whole second season will be much like the first with the characters only realizing they are in the Bad Place at the end → in the second episode of the season Eleanor figures out they are in the Bad Place; and episode 3 of the season (Dance Dance Resolution) has them speed run through hundreds of reboots, representing possible seasons of content.
practically every problem introduced in MSP is resolved by the end of the episode: e.g., Sound is introduced and wants to take over the club → by the end of the episode Gun is back in charge and Sound has been welcomed into the fold; or Tinn knows Gun’s mother is sick but she tells him not to tell Gun → in the next scene Gun finds out, a couple of scenes later things are smoothed over with Tinn, and by the end of the episode we know Gun’s mother is going to be ok; a girl gives Tinn sweets and compliments him which makes Gun jealous → in the next scene we learn it was a case of mistaken identity. As a result, there is little protracted drama or angst (especially revolving around miscommunication) in MSP compared to other BL shows
Thirdly, both shows don’t always have us win:
e.g., at the end of season 2 of TGP, when Eleanor is on her quest to be a better person, she isn’t rewarded for it, it makes her life harder, and she falls back into her old ways
e.g., in MSP, Chinzilla doesn’t win Hot Wave
It was really interesting reading through peoples’ speculations on social media while TGP and MSP were airing about where these shows were heading next, as invariably there were people thinking of other shows (sitcoms, BLs, etc.) and expecting these shows to go those routes (e.g., expanding relatively simple premises over full seasons, or extensive plotlines and drama steeped in miscommunication and jealousy). But then the next episode of TGP or MSP would air and blow through a full season’s premise in half an episode or sidestep all the most dramatic possibilities
Because of these three things (“premature” reveals, quick pacing, the protagonists don’t always win), TGP and MSP felt fresh week after week. We didn’t know where TGP was going to go next, and MSP was flipping the conventional BL narrative arcs and plot devices on their heads. The shows felt confident: they didn’t need to stretch things out over multiple episodes or full seasons because they knew they had more than enough compelling narrative material to keep going.
These shows surprised us, but at the same time the progression of the story and the characters felt more realistic than in other shows. The characters in TGP face setbacks but ultimately grow as people over the course of the show, and the characters of MSP communicate with each other like most real-life friends and partners would and don’t get mired down in extended miscommunication plotlines.
Also shoutout to this post by @distant-screaming that reminded me of the narrative/pacing section my MSP ppt

THE GOOD PLACE_3.06 "A Fractured Inheritance"
I'm going to hug you because I love you. And because you feel just as alone as I do. I'm sorry our parents were such wankers. And I understand that you can't accept my apology because that would quench your creative thirst. They forced us to compete, and that competition has fuelled your art for decades. It's so awful, and I'm so sorry.

The end of milkvan kinda reminds me of the twist at the end of season one of The Good Place.
For those who don’t know, TGP is a sitcom about a woman named Eleanor who dies and is sent to what she thinks is the “good place,” but (SPOILER) the twist at the end of season one is that she was actually in the “bad place” the whole time.
And there are plenty of hints leading up to this. Bad things were always happening to Eleanor throughout season one. At least for me, as a viewer, the twist worked because I was thinking “this is just how sitcoms are written, things always go awry for comedic effect.” But what was really happening was the writers were playing with my expectations of writing conventions in order to deliver a twist.
Melvin is very similar. There are glaring issues with their relationship, but the main reason people believe they are going to stay together, even if they don’t necessarily like them together, is because this is just how media is usually written. The main guy and the main girl end up together, that just how it works.
And it’s not like the Duffers aren’t intentionally playing into this as well. At the end of seasons 3 and 4, no matter how much time they spend breaking down their relationship, they throw in a last-minute confession to keep up the expectation that this is what’s going to happen. But it’s doesn’t negate any of the work they did to chip away at their rocky foundation.
I think when they finally go through with Byler in season 5, people will have much the same reaction that I did watching the twist from TGP. A moment of “Oh! I totally noticed that it was written wierdly, but I didn’t know why until now!” And I don’t imagine it’ll happen overnight, but I can see people starting to piece together some of the hints the Duffers had left in past seasons. Things like crazy together, the rain fight, Mike standing in front of Will’s closet at the end of s3, etc. It’ll be fun to watch everyone get caught up.

that show brings me so much comfort to the point where I've rewatched seasons 1-3 multiple times but I CANNOT bring myself to rewatch four because I start sobbing I feel you

I play Fantasy Football with my dad’s side of the family and every damn year I forget that last year I slapped unimaginably. Like we all make stupid team names and avatars but I’m off the charts. The one year I won 1st was the year DBH came out and 2 seasons into TGP so I, as a joke, totally throwing, only drafted Detroit and Jacksonville players and called my team Detroit Become Jacksonville, only that was the year the Jaguars went fucking crazy god mode out of nowhere so I kept sweeping it was unreal. Free draft picks carrying me home.
Anyway I couldn’t remember what I was as I’m opening it to set a team for this year, and smacked in the face with Aguccim Quad Squad the avatar for which I made was a meme about Ryung-gu getting 3 moms, and I lose it
