Ranking mxtx couples by whether or not I think they'd be good parents
(I'm 90% sure I'm forgetting someone)
Yep, next question (S)-
Wangxian: tried and tested good dads. I wish them luck with the whole “trying to get wwx pregnant” thing
They have some shit to work through, but after that I think they'd be fine (A)-
Ling Wen/ Bai Jin: if we're just going off the original publication, I would put them in a much lower tier, but since the revised edition added that thing about them raising orphans together and said orphans turning out alright before unfortunate circumstances, I'm putting them up here. I think they'll be alright once they work through the miscommunication
Xiao Xingchen/ Song Lan: They obviously have a lot of trauma they're working through, but I'd like to think they and A-Qing will be a loving family in the long run
One of them would be a good parent, the other wouldn't be a bad parent (B)-
Jiang Yanli/ Jin Zixuan: there's no canon reason for me putting them this low. Jin Zixuan just gives off a mediocre parent vibe to me (and we all know Jiang Yanli is the best)
Yushipei: Yushi Huang has good mom energy, and Pei Ming has been shown to be a not terrible mentor. I'd want the misogyny fully beaten out of him with a mace before I'd think he should have kids of his own though
Lang Qianqiu/ Little Guy: at the very least, they're making sure Guzi is fed, clothed, washed, vaccinated, and has access to education. Neither of them know what they're doing, but I think Little Guy is good at faking it. I wish them luck in their upcoming custody battle
You know what, surprise me/ I'll hear you out (C)-
Bingqiu: My first instinct is “no, do not bring kids into this,” but then I remembered tharnShen Qingqiu has a surprisingly decent track record? Like, Ning Yingying and Ming Fan both turned out a lot more health than they did in the original novel, and though I wouldn't call him in a good place, Binghe is doing a lot better than Bingge. The wild card for me here is Luo Binghe because I have no idea how he'd be with kids
Quanyin: Yin Yu had a decent track record until he was pushed into snapping. I think rn, he needs a couple centuries of being a babygirl before he's ready to parent again. No idea how Quan Yizhen would do though
Born to “dual income, no kids, rich uncles/aunts” (D)-
Fengqing: Feng Xin is canonically a bad dad. I know he's working on it, but it is what it is. Mu Qing has been shown to be decent with kids, but I think he’d have a melt down if he had to deal with the mess constantly.
Hualian: I mean, Xie Lian has raised three kids at this point and one of them became a god, another became state preceptor and then sorta complicit in a genocide, and one became god AND committed genocide + he babysat a ghost king for months and didn't even realize that's what he was because it was a miracle if he remembered to feed him… so, a mixed bag. Hua Cheng may be schrodinger’s child hater, but I'm intrigued by the idea of him raising kids just because I want to know how his own childhood would influence his parenting abilities. They should probably just stick to babysitting for now though
Mingling: Liu Mingyan is too busy writing gay porn to be dealing with kids, and I just can't imagine Sha Hualing as a mom
Please don't bring a kid into this mess (F)-
Beefleaf: Do I need to explain this one?
Mobeishang: Shang Qinghua should not be put in any position where he has to teach someone about consent (Binghe’s early attempts at flirting being a prime example of why that's a bad idea). I also think Mobei Jun is still working on the whole “why hitting people is not cool” thing.
QiJiu: I think the original timeline is a prime example of how they're just not in a place to be raising kids
Jun Wu/ Mei Nianqing: Xie Lian would like a refund on his adopted father figures. They had one kid and he only made it to age 20 because he was cursed to not die
#heaven official's blessing#tgcf#mdzs#grand master of demonic cultivation#svsss#scum villian self saving system#I'm not tagging every couple because idk all their ship names#hualian#bingqiu#wangxian#beefleaf#qijiu#fengqing#quanyin#yushipei#for anyone wondering about the “schrodinger’s child hater” comment:#HC is shown to be on good terms/likes Banyue and Guzi but in the revised edition theres a scene where HC says he doesn't like kids#but also in that scene he's brainwashed and thinks he's a rich 16 y/o#mentally preparing myself for the Feng Xin stans to explain why mr “behave xyz way or I wont acknowledge you as a person” is a good dad#Feng Xin is less of a himbo and more of a tall/buff Chilchuck and I'd like if the fandom at large acknowledged that#idk what ship I forgot to include but I know its not a Jaing Cheng ship#edit: the Binghe defenders are raising valid points but he's still a wildcard to me because of his trust and abandonment issues#I could see bingqiu being good parents like... 5-10 years after the series end point

the AD scene of Hua Cheng setting Xie Lian loose in the armory for the first time is SO fucking cute 😭😭 XL's like a little kid in a candy store, he's bouncing off the walls. The start of the scene is so silly:
谢怜:——是兵器库?可......可以摸啊? 花城:哥哥随意。 谢怜:这短剑阴锋诡谲,最宜刺杀!此刀只需择一明主,以一当百没有问题.....等等!这是什么?这是不是双头转灵剑——我只在传说里听过! 花城: 哥哥,你觉得如何? 谢怜:还有这把,什么如何? 花城:喜欢吗? 谢怜:喜欢啊! 花城:有多喜欢? 谢怜:太喜欢了!
[Enters the armory] Xie Lian: —Is it an armory?! Can... can I touch? Hu Cheng: You're free to do as you wish Gege. Xie Lian [excitedly grabs a weapon]: The edge on this dagger is treacherous, it's perfect for assassinations! This knife only needs to choose a talented master, you could go one against a hundred, no problem! Wait! What’s this?! [Draws a sword] Is this a double-ended spiritual sword?! I've only ever heard of it in legends!! Hua Cheng: Gege, what do you think? Xie Lian: [absentmindedly] And this one.... Think about what? Hua Cheng: Do you like it? Xie Lian [with delight]: I like it!! Hua Cheng: How much do you like it? Xie Lian [excitedly]: I like it so much!!!! [Xie Lian runs off to look at more swords and the scene continues]

to me i think the revised edition will always be the same level of canon as my favorite fanfictions. i'll take the parts i like and incorporate them into my own personal headcanons, but at the end of the day, the original is my one true canon
#they picked a hell of a time for the revised edition#releasing it at around the same time as the official translations of the original was... certainly a choice#no judgment to people who like it of course#tgcf#e pokes the hornets' nest

okay so i've been hearing a whole bunch of things about the revised edition:
-> additional hualian scenes -> heavily changed lang qianqiu/fangxin guoshi flashback arc -> looking into the memories of other characters in order to understand them, like ling wen and the brocade immortal -> more "sanitized" -> characters (mostly xie lian from what i've heard) lack a lot of mistakes and flaws, making the story less interesting, apparently? -> like the book 4 (cnnovel) flashback was a lot less messily emotional? -> better flow -> (haven't seen, but talk of) jian lan and feng xin story being expanded upon?
mxtx has left the original edition up and we only have the english translation of the full story in english.
what's canon to you? when you consume fan content and the like, or when you're making up scenarios in your head, what content do you pick and choose from each edition? or do you throw yourself into one or the other?
#for me i pick and choose what i like in both#(and the translations from clearnoodle are canon to me (at least what's on the site))#a flawless character makes them feel like a mary sue to me so#again this is based off of what i've heard#i think i prefer the original in that aspect#but i do love some of the revised edition content#i think we should mix them together like two different colors of kinetic sand#my rambles are great i swear#tgcf#heaven officials blessing#tian guan ci fu#tgcf special edition#tgcf meta#i. think?#meta

What a perfect ending, telling the legends mortals have about Xie Lian and Hua Cheng and how to worship them both. They have to be together! Bonded cats do not separate!
Now it's time for the extras... Or at least the extras included in the official translation. I didn't learn that a "revised" edition of TGCF was made after the official English translation until halfway through my readthrough - if I reread these books next year like I've been planning to, I should like to read that version instead. Is there an unofficial translation for it that's popular or recommended?
#Me Talking#tian guan ci fu#heaven official's blessing#TGCF liveblogging#I'm really curious about the revised edition!#I know for a fact it has extras that aren't in the official translation as well as new stuff about Xie Lian's Guoshi Fangxin time#that I'm also very interested in

Why is 7seas releasing deluxe editions of tgcf now after the full revised version of tgcf was released? Or am I missing something?
#tgcf#unless the deluxe edition IS the revisions#which i highly doubt#then it feels a little predatory to get people invested in a fancy version of the draft#when they already *bought* the draft before#and now it is common knowledge that the final version is out

Adding for comparison:
“You know, we do think the same way. You think I’m incomprehensible? Well, the feeling’s mutual.” He met Xie Lian’s gaze. “At this point, I might as well just tell it to you straight. I’ve got a whole bunch of opinions about you.” “Uh...well...I knew that already. For ages now,” Xie Lian said. “Oh really?” Mu Qing said coldly. “Then do you know that I often thought you relied on your status too much—that even though you were His Highness the Crown Prince, even though you had good fortune, your skills weren’t that much better than mine?” “...” “I also thought that you probably only liked doing all those good deeds for show, because you wanted all the praise and flattery. And that you only helped me because of that—I was the perfect subject for you to demonstrate your sympathy and kindness on. To be honest, some of my opinions haven’t changed, even now. Maybe they never will. Even if I push these thoughts down, they’ll come back eventually.” At that point, Xie Lian didn’t know whether to sweat about this or what. “There’s no need to say stuff like that in such detail to the man himself, you know?!” Unexpectedly, Mu Qing continued with, “But more often than not, I’m still...kind of in awe of you.” Xie Lian was taken aback. Mu Qing gathered his courage. As though someone were choking him, forcing him to speak, he stiffly said, “Isn’t that normal? You...are rather amazing. You’re...also...a better person than I am. In short, I...very much wanted...to become your f-f-friend.” “...” Xie Lian had never in a million years imagined he’d ever hear that from Mu Qing’s lips. Though they were stuttered, forced, and stiff, they were such honest, sincere, sensible words! His eyes went wide. “You...” Mu Qing had finally squeezed the sentence out through the cracks of his gritted teeth, and he let out a long breath. “That incident after Xianle’s fall...no matter if it was right or wrong, no matter if I was in a difficult situation, I still owe you an apology.” Xie Lian was stumped for a moment. “...It’s all water under the bridge, so let it go. But let’s not worry about it now. We need to get out of here first!” Mu Qing raised his voice. “He told me that if I fell under suspicion, you would take advantage of the situation and not save me even if you knew I didn’t do it. That you wouldn’t believe me because you hate me.” “He”? Xie Lian knew exactly who “he” was. “I didn’t agree to help him, but even so...everything he said, I’ve thought before,” Mu Qing continued. “Deep down, I always thought you hated me, that you despised me, so I... I’ve always... Anyway, you don’t actually think that way. I’m glad.”
—Vol. 8, Chapt. 127: Upon the Heaven-Crossing Bridge, Three Idiots Return to Olden Times, 7seas
It's interesting because it seems like the edits were rearranging (Mu Qing being called over by Jun Wu is mentioned before the end of the "f-f-friend" speech), adding more depth to their convo (they're actually conversing rather than Xie Lian being stumped or trying to quickly brush Mu Qing's confession aside), making Mu Qing more clear (such as him directly naming Jun Wu as the instigator instead of weirdly playing coy like in the unrevised), and—what I consider the most significant change—removing Mu Qing admitting that he won't honestly change after this.
So much of Mu Qing's character in the story is him hoping that Xie Lian is actually a terrible person, and it diminishes his character growth of admitting this is all projection and undermines his reconciliation with and apology to Xie Lian for him to then admit that some of his unfair opinions have not changed, will likely never change, and will in fact probably return later. However, because mxtx removed those lines and also cleaned up Mu Qing's speech, he directly admits that his thoughts were projections, accepts that Xie Lian does not and never has thought less of others, least of all Mu Qing, and is willing to finally see Xie Lian as he is going forward, without falling back on his terrible habits like the unrevised states that he would.
tgcf revised—mu qing & xie lian's reconciliation, chapters 192-193, translated by me
note: i'm not a translation professional, i did this for fun to give a rough idea of what happened in the revised version of this scene. it's also inevitable for subtleties to get lost in translation so do be aware. i know the english prose sounds a little awkward because chinese prose works differently but i wanted to translate it as directly as possible & any attempts at making it sound "smoother" or nicer would demand biased input from me which i wanted to minimize
edit; found a typo in the first slide. mu qing should say "even thought" not "even though"
#tgcf#human compares translations#thank you op for translating this!!!#one day there will be a complete revised translation for everyone to enjoy#but i'm loving the edits that have been revealed#and i especially love how mxtx sought to fix this reconciliation#and make mq a better friend#cause i know of a few people (myself included in some parts of this) that felt that the this scene didn't do enough#and now i feel like a lot of those hesitations might just be resolved
