This image shows a female agricultural worker pulling dry grass outside of Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai, China in 2010. It demonstrates the harsh contrast between two conflicting populations in a country that was traditionally agrarian but is urbanising quickly. China was an agricultural country for years with the majority of its population living in rural areas in primitive housing, living traditional lives. However due to the recent boom that many countries in the Far East have experienced, it has quickly become an emerging superpower on the world stage, due mainly to its economic and military status. Though due to how quickly China has urbanised it has led to a real clash of cultures between the agricultural population and the cities. This image has truly captured that struggle, a lowly farm worker using her bare hands to tend to the lawn outside a modern metal and glass skyscraper which is looming above her, symbolic of how the business centres of China have grown up and overshadowed their roots, forgetting their traditional Chinese ways as they become more and more westernised. The composition of the image is beautiful and almost creates a triangle, from the two bottom corners to the tip of the skyscraper, which is visually pleasing to the eye. This could also be interpreted as similar to the feudal system of medieval society, with the peasants at the bottom and the royalty at the top, similar to this, where we have the agricultural worker at the bottom and the CEO at the top of the tower, looking down on its history. It is a beautiful image that captures the zeitgeist of a nation.
