and now for something stupid
#but really i also just wanted to play around w this sort of coloring style bc its been FOREVER since ive used it#and i think i can make it look better now#AND i think i can make more sillay stuff like this and not have it take as long w cleaning up lines#anyway now you all understand the terrible dynamic between these three#phobo's infodump text is just copypasted from the wikipedia page for knives.#julliet ALSO uses knives is the thing so hes actually mansplaining < JOKE#he just wants to share. even if it gives her a headache. but he wouldnt mansplain he doesnt have it in him. hes ok with felonies tho#but julis life hasnt known peace since she was told to take care of the newbies#and shes ALSO a newbie (just slightly less so) so really this is probably just tartarus hazing her#theyd take one look at the two disorganized unserious overeager newbies and think ''you know what would be fucking hilarious''#and pass them onto the neurotic slightly-less-newbie who takes everything as seriously as possible. disaster combination.#i cannot stress enough that this is a group of bandits and murderers theyre NOT above hazing.#deimos actually is doing the best job at it since he is stealing as we speak#i mean hes not supposed to do it to his teammates but still. on the right track#as for the dynamic between deimos and phobos themselves its like. theyre just bros. theyre both pretty similar in personality#except deimos is kinda more mean and cynical while phobos can be kinda. dense and naive despite literally where hes at in life#but most of the time theyre basically beavis and butthead#i would also like to stress that juli is not being homophobic she just already cannot stand these guys and cant believe the audacity#but. complete misunderstanding. karma for stealing wallets ig#this will never be cleared up by anyone ever#but again thats not their dynamic they are just beavis and butthead. and i guess that makes juli daria LOL#finn's ocs#finn's art

Utena & Mecha
Something that occurred to me while thinking about Revolutionary Girl Utena and its influence on Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, is that Utena, while firmly in the magical genre, has a surprising amount of connections to the mecha genre.
Probably the most well-known of these is that Neon Genesis Evangelion[1], a show that was at least partially inspired by Hideaki Anno[2] being a fan of Mobile Suit Gundam[3], had staff (including Yoji Enokido[4], Shinya Hasegawa[5], Kazuya Tsurumaki[6], and Toru Takahashi[7]) who would go on to work in various positions on Utena, with Enokido and Hasegawa in particular being part of Be-PaPas[8], the pen name of the key group of people in charge of Utena's development.
In addition to this connection, another member of Be-Papas, Chiho Saito[9], was also a fan of the original Mobile Suit Gundam, and not only has drawn art of Char Aznable and Lalah Sune[10], but was even inspired by the latter to make Anthy Indian[11]. As an aside, it should be noted that Saito, in addition to being the mangaka behind the Utena manga, also worked with Ichiro Okouchi[12], the main writer of Witch from Mercury, on a pair of light novels that elaborated on a couple of episdoes from the Utena TV series.
In addition to being influenced by mecha anime (Gundam in particular, both directly and indirectly), Utena has also gone on to influence future mecha anime.
The first of these would be FLCL[13], in which Tsurumaki and Enokido collaborated on another tale of surreal adolescence, albeit one which, among other things, substituted magical swords emerging from people's chests for giant robots emerging from their foreheads instead.
Another example is Gunbuster 2[14][15], in which Tsurumaki and Enokido worked together again on another story of surreal adolscence and giant robots, set in space this time, and with two leads who take visual inspiration from Utena and Anthy, one of whom was inspired by the other to become a prince mecha pilot.
Enokido would go on to team up with Takuya Igarashi[16], whom had previously worked with Enokido on Utena (under a pen name) and Ouran High School Host Club[17] (also influenced by Utena, though more focused on comedy), which resulted in Star Driver[18], yet again a tale of surreal adolescence and giant robots, but this time featuring a secret dueling game in a high school and a marriage of mecha fights with magical girl aesthetics.
Witch from Mercury is interesting then, in that it both hearkens to this history of Utena-influenced mecha but is also a departure from it, eschewing the surrealism of Utena, while sharing the show's appreciation of symbolism, theatricality, and queerness, and instead using and remixing elements of Utena's narrative structure and character archetypes. This more grounded approach to Utena, coupled with additional narrative elements from Shakespeare's The Tempest, as well as corporate politics and violence more traditional to Gundam, makes perhaps the most fitting tribute Mobile Suit Gundam can give to Utena and its history of strange association with mecha anime.

interestingly the only mention i can find of a monastery loquarium is (rendered "loquorium") in "the california padres and their mission" by charles francis saunders and joseph smeaton chase, a book in the public domain:
The Mission relics at Santa Inés are many and interesting. Besides those used in the present-day church services, and the beautiful old vestments that are in the sacristy, there is a considerable collection arranged for interested visitors in an interior room of the convento — a room formerly used as the loquorium, where daily, after dinner and after supper, the friars were at liberty to come to rest for an hour from their laboring and praying, and relax in human chat.
the next paragraph also mentions this room now housing relics "patiently got together from all sorts of places," including "from the earth of the surrounding fields as the plough turns it up"
#originally the search yielded archive.org's text version which seems to have been like that autogenerated version from (their own) scan#where it clearly results in a lot of typos as it's ''misread'' like ''inés'' becoming ''in6s''#so it made it difficult to cross reference w/the pdf scan lol...''convento'' had become ''comento'' like i figured that was wrong but had t#actually see the original text to know what had gone wrong there#speaking of limited information recorded in specific places....#how that santa inés is i believe from saint agnes; the portuguese form being inez#akd's character in ''the outside story'' being called ''inez'' in some articles but in the movie they're only called/credited as ''izzy''#a potential nickname; i could believe that this jumped off from them being named inez but thus far it remains apocrypha lol....#pentiment#it's also ofc like; how many resources on olden monastery rooms that aren't scanned / converted to text / public domain available thusly...#but you can somewhat expect Monastic Trivia to potentially show up in other sites or even via like online dictionaries....#checked as much by looking up another [term for Special Room in a monastery] and getting various results defining it#oh now i'm remembering some fun research moment learning that some like Christian Order was defined by standing during prayers instead of#kneeling...and the definition is available and they're all exactly the same b/c they all come from One Resource offering that definition#this came from that ''i'm drawing winston's Standing Posture a certain way'' moment where i read the wikipedia page for [standing] lol#which stemmed from reading the wikipedia page for contrapposto in an effort to learn other Artistic Terms For Standing Certain Ways#orthostasis....yep there it is in the ''see also'' section of the wikipedia Standing article: agonoclita / the agonoclites#7th century christian sect who Never Kneeled...name from greek for like ''i do not bend the knee''...One Citation = everyone's sole citatio#oh also noticing that a loquarium was probably all the more relevant when piero seems to note The Rule frowns on too much conversing for fu#like i've been to Dinner With Benedictines In Their Monastery multiple times lol no such pressure modern day to not chitchat#but that when Rule manifestations were thusly; a room that was like ''exempt'' from that would be unsurprising....fun chitchat hq#monasteries of w/e various orders having zones dedicated to being more chill than is supposedly required outside it....#hmm wikipedia's saying benedictines maintain silence As Much As Possible outside bonus silent hrs / social convos are Limited#news to me. also says ''but such details'' abt the day to day life is technically left by The Rule up to whatever Superior of an abbey#evidently the way of doing things at the one i was familiar with / around were not so pressed about silence / rare/limited socializing

hot take I don’t think the reason to research the lives of historical trans people should be to figure out exactly what kind of gendered language they would have wanted us to use for them, I think it should be to engage empathetically with the complexity of trans experiences in times different from ours. and also to acknowledge the impossibility of fully understanding historical people who can no longer speak for themselves, even as we keep trying to do it.

when i was a kid i really resented the fact that my mom kept forcing us to check out nonfiction books alongside our fantasy novels in order to "broaden our minds" and basically ensure we were learning Real Factsies(tm), but now that i'm older, if i don't go off and learn some Real Factsies(tm) every so often, then i'll end up finding my fictions dull and uninspired
#i guess i just also hated how kids' nonfiction tended to present itself. unless they were like those slim encyclopedias#with all the sleek pictures n glossy pages of diagrams n shit#bc i remember reading a nonfiction book abt seahorses for adults called 'poseidon's steed' in like fifth grade and loving it#adult nonfiction books (in my limited experience) tends to read more like storytelling except everything is real and has citations#also now that i'm an Adult(tm) with More Life Experience(tm)(tm) (this is a cue for my older mutuals to laugh at my precociousness or w/e)#i find it easier to connect to the text-- in this case a book abt a guy called paul otlet n his contributions to information science#which is a thing i am Very Much interested in bc the internet has spoiled me with its indexing and yet i love analog information#also it was right next to two volumes from the 60s detailing various historical book burnings#and indeed the intro talked abt how this man's life's work was handily destroyed by the nazis who thought he was cataloguing garbage#learning abt all the lil guys in the 20th century who fuckin loved organizing information n bitched abt there being information overload#they are So Real they would have looked at the modern internet n gone 'this is too much make wikipedia the main page'#花話#anyway i doubt i'd have appreciated reading so much had i not read fiction so avidly growing up#and i rebuke the idea that the fantasy novels taught me nothing at all bc stories teach us abt being people#and demonstrate experience better than a more academic n factual analysis/write-up or w/e#yes i do love to learn abt philosophy in its like. rigorous academic state or form or w/e.#but that's diff from seeing it in practice in the real world or in people's stories n how it Affects Things
