Friday Night Lights- Can Lightning strike twice?
Friday Night Lights for fans is a show that carries a lot of weight. It really showcases small town life, the pressures of being a high-school football star. Throughout the series, we are constantly reminded that these are kids going through experiences for the first time and learning and growing as they do so.
There is a reason this news broke almost a week ago and I am writing this now. This show means a lot to me. As a fan of a lot of these actors and what they have gone on to do since, as well as the characters they played here. One can't have seen this series and not immediately think of the classic Eric Taylor line. "Clear Eyes. Full Hearts. Can't lose."
While the news broke that there is a reboot set within the same universe it immediately made me want to check in with some all time favorites. Where are Coach Taylor and family? Has Tim Riggins been able to stay out of trouble? What happened to Vince and everyone from the later seasons?
Tumblr media
It is hard to picture a reboot without wanting to see those queations answered. Yet there is power if they can get even remotely close to replicating some of the complex themes this show touched upon. Including alcoholism, abuse, sexuality, depression, ptsd among others. Even day to day life is much different than when this show debuted in 2006. For example, I was 15. I am now 33 with kids of my own. Some of these themes are processed differently now in terms of the thinking process. A successful reboot is possible. There are just a few things they need to do in order to achieve that.
One thing and this probably the most important is change the setting. Returning to the same town already makes it so you have to address what people want to know. You could make more of a showcase out of it. Perhaps the new team goes on the road to Dillon, Texas. Even if you keep it in the state of Texas it seems like all you are doing is chasing legacy if you use Dillon as the setting once again.
Fully embrace the culural shifts that have occurred since 2006. That may aggravate a small selection of people, but times have changed. You can't make a show releasing in, say, 2025 or 2026, the same you would have in 2006. It's been 20 years. Lean into the only thing that has not changed is the pressure of doing well at football. Let your show and new characters come to life around how Americans often care more about football than they do the athletes on display.
Tumblr media
This is an intriguing prospect. If they misfire, it will be seen as a cash grab cashing in on nostalgia and the reboot/revamp train. If it done well, they may be able to showcase the power of football and the pressure cooker situations of life in a small town twice. It remains to be seen what will come of this reboot. This project is in very early development and one that will have people paying a lot of attention for years to come.

09/02/23 - Austin, TX - BRAND NEW LONGHORN - Triple-digit temperatures again today for the University of Texas vs. Rice football game. Mixed emotions about who I’m rooting for as I was a longtime Rice Owls fan when we lived in Houston. But now, we live in the Austin area and the Texas Longhorns are my new team which makes me a brand new Longhorn. Hook ‘em Horns!
