REAL affordable skincare advice
*Note: Everyones skin responds differently to different products and routines so this might not work on all skin types. Also acne/cystic acne is often times hormonal which means cystic acne might only be temporary for some young adults and long lasting for others*
When I was around 16-17 years old I started to get bad cystic acne out of nowhere and for no apparent reason. No one in my family had a history of cystic acne so it was strange that I had suddenly started to get these really deep painful pimples that wouldn’t go away for weeks. Every night I would wash my face and put on spot treatment but the deep cysts wouldn’t ever leave and the surface level pimples would just be replaced by a new pimple 2 days later. The winters were really hard because my face would become super dry and peely while at the same time being oily and cysty. It wasn’t until I met up with an old friend (he used to have acne like mine but now has amazing skin) who gave me the best skincare advice I‘ve ever recieved. I’ve been following it everyday ever since and my skin has drastically improved.
1. Exfoliate! Use a spin brush or sugar scrub every once and a while to refresh your skin
2. MOISTURIZE! Try moisturizing everyday if you have oily or dry skin. Try out different types of moisturizers to see what works best with your skin type there are some great affordable options at grocery stores like Stop and Shop.
3. Change your pillowcase! Change it every couple of days which can mean washing it or even just rotating the pillows you sleep on and change the side of the pillow you use.
4. Drink water. Duh Everyone has said this
5. Eat less dairy/fatty foods.
6. De-stress and sleep more. This one is probably most important but way harder said than done
7. Wash with salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. This is purely personal preference and it might not always work
I hope this helped someone looking for stuff to try that doesn’t want to drop $50 on skin creams. I wish I was told this information years ago so I didn’t have to deal with so much painful acne and embarrassment. Good luck!

i hate it when people tell me to just drink more water like bruh i drink 2 liters a day any more and i’ll be attached to my toilet
so i’ve been doing some research (cuz i have pretty bad acne ) of food that help with acne cuz my current $400 skincare routine isn’t really fixing the problem for me... so i’m trying the fix “inside out” approach. i ended with berries, turmeric (combined with black pepper or healthy fats to help it absorb so you dont just poop it out) apple cider vinegar, and just heating more healthy food in general... so i’m trying this all combined in a vegan smoothie to see if it helps my skin clear up 🤷🏻♀️

How to reduce teenage acne
How to reduce teenage acne
Teenagers are loaded with a lot of things. Yes, they don’t have to think about their next pay cheque or paying bills or worry about their children, but they do have to do things right for a brighter future. Their to-do list generally includes getting good grades, participating in extracurricular activities or engaging in sports, making friends, and basically, enjoying their teen years. It is also…

For the second week of product talk, I am going to discuss Toner. Mostly misunderstood, I will explain why they are important and talk about my favorite ones.
The #1 reason why you should be using a toner is that it’s the last step in the cleansing process. It removes any excess cleanser, oil, dirt and makeup. But also, after you take a shower, a toner will removes chlorines and minerals often…

Hi everyone! After years and years of suffering with horrible cystic acne, I am excited to say, I found the CURE! (At least the one that has helped me the most without leaving me broke)
Let me start by telling you that I have tried absolutely EVERYTHING to get rid of my acne, from crazy homemade masks to going all the way and taking Accutane (something I could never finish since it gave me unbearable side effects). Finally after years of trial an error ( 9 to be exact -- I’ve had acne since I was 13) and thousands of dollars down the drain, I found something inexpensive (all the products for less than 37 dollars) and amazingly... it CURED ME!
Disclaimer: I have not been sponsored by any of the brands I mention below. I personally use all the products, and found them myself with trial and error after years of trying absolutely everything! I AM NOT a licensed esthetician or dermatologist, take everything I said with a grain of salt (meaning try it slowly and at your own pace, PLEASE don’t hurt your face). Read labels, and consult your doctor before using these if you have to.
Tee Tree Oil ($9)
This has been my saving grace! Whenever I get a big cyst, I place a little bit of this oil, with a cotton swab, on the tip of my pimples and BOOM; so much better in the morning.
This oil has anti bacterial components which helps kill the underlying cause of acne AND its natural!
Clay Mask ($9) + Apple Cider Vinegar ($6)
The clay mask says you can use it either with water or apple cider vinegar. Definitely use it with the vinegar.
The apple cider vinegar promotes rapid cell turn-over since it has vitamin A (retinol -- the same thing found in Accutane), but it is a more natural source.
You will definitely SEE the difference in the morning, and your face will feel refreshed.
P.s -- if you buy it, I recommend the bigger one. It has so much more product for only a few more bucks.
Jojoba Oil ($12) or Argan Oil ($12)
I did some research and it turns out that Argan is more helpful for a dryer skin, while Jojoba is better for a more oily skin. ( I use Jojoba for this reason)
Both of these promote healing, and have anti-inflammatory + anti-bacterial effects.
Directions to use the products:
Night time:
Every night wash your face with any gel based face wash (I have been using FAB’s ). Exfoliate your face 2-3 times per week (I have been using Origin’s scrub).
Mix a little bit of the clay mask with the apple cider vinegar in a bowl. Apply generously all over your face. Wait until it dries, then rinse it thoroughly.
Apply a toner, then wait until it dries. I have been using Mario Badescu Facial Spray (which can also work as a primer)
Apply either the Jojoba oil (oily skin), or the Argan oil (dry skin), just a few drops. (Tip: don’t put so much that you have left over -- that you skin didn’t suck up) Wait until it dries.
With a cotton swab, place on the tip of each pimple, a little bit of the Tee Tree Oil. (Tip: it is a ver strong smell, so I recommend you you start with smaller doses) Another tip, if you face looks like mine in the first picture above, I suggest you dilute a little bit of the the tree oil with some water and rinse you face with it instead of the face wash
Go to bed knowing you face will be loving you in the morning!
Morning time:
Wash your face with the face wash ( I do not recommend washing it with the tee tree oil in the morning)
Apply a few drops of either one of the oils (Jojoba or Argan)
Use a toner.
Feel refreshed and beautiful. GOODBYE acne!
I’ve been doing this routine for about 4 months, and the second picture is the result. All the products linked have lasted me more than 3 months! Specially the amazonian clay, from which I still have more than half! ( So the money is definitely worth it)
If you are going to try any of these products, I recommend you start first with the Tee Tree Oil. It is the one that works the fastest, making the most difference. By that I mean; it makes my inflammation absolutely disappear by the next morning.
Extra tips:
Another huge part of getting rid of my acne was nutrition:
PAPAYA -- this is not a joke! If you are lucky enough to live in a place that has papaya EAT IT! Papaya is a an anti-inflamatory and has been healing all my remaining scars like a miracle.
Milk -- I found that the times when I consumed less dairy products, my face not only got less cystic pimples, but they also healed faster.
Sugar -- The times when I consumed most sugar were the times when I got most of my black heads and white heads.
Chips -- they are a big NO-NO, whenever I eat chips, my face ALWAYS gets a breakout the next morning.
Try not to use liquid foundation. (I know, I know -- this is something I always have trouble with. I too try to hide my acne with as much foundation as possible) I found that wearing powdered foundation helps me not break out so much.
Try to only use gel based moisturizers, as they are better against oily skin.
THERE IT IS! I hope you found this a little bit helpful. I’m sharing this ( my embarrassing acne covered face) in the hopes that it helps someone! I wish that someone had posted something like this on Tumblr for me years ago. I would have saved myself some money and suffering! If you do decide to try this, please SEND ME PICTURES of before and after. I promise you this routine is worth a try. Hopefully together we can help lots of people!
{Edit to add: Both of these pictures were taken with my cell phone’s front camera. The only difference is that I took the first in my bedroom at night (source of light: a lamp), and the second one was taken with natural light during the day. I didn’t want to edit/alter either of them since I wanted them both to be authentic.}

I think people really underestimate how damaging teenage acne can be.
Oh and I'm talking about the horrible one.
The one where your whole face is filled with pus.
It's hard, I know. I'm sorry you have/had to go through this.
It will lessen with effort and it's okay to ask more help from your parents.
It was a traumatic experience and you worth more than your face.
It's okay to cry about it. Always. Your struggle is real.
