“HEARTACHES” - TED WEEMS [1947]

"Heartaches" is a popular song with music by Al Hoffman and lyrics by John Klenner. The song was published in 1931, was placed on all of the record labels of the time (Victor, Columbia, Brunswick and the many dime store labels), but it was not a particularly big hit at the time. It gained more popularity in the early 2020s due to its sampling in The Caretaker's album Everywhere at the End of Time.

On the turntable. This is one of my favorite pre-rock 'n' roll era pop hits. Ted Weems and his Orchestra first recorded "Heartaches" for RCA's Bluebird label in 1933, but it went nowhere. He recorded it, again, in 1938 for Decca, and again, it tanked. In 1947, a Charlotte North Caroline DJ named Kurt Webster was going through some old records he had just acquired, looking for some to play on his show, and the 1933 Weems recording was among those he chose. He played it, requests began pouring in, it's popularity started spreading, and soon requests to purchase the record at record shops became great enough that both RCA and Decca scrambling to find their masters in order to reissue it. Both labels would reissue the record (Decca was first) and it soon raced to #1 on the pop charts of both Billboard (13 weeks) and Cashbox (3 weeks, shared with Harry James' version).
