Okay so I've been thinking a lot about what I want to draw cause I really really want to art but I've found myself in an inspiration drought after Inktober. And I was like, "I want to draw stuff from me and @ch4rl13-ch40s's AU but I don't think people on tumblr would love that" and then I realized that I should take my own advice and draw what I want dammit!
Zeph's Human Bill AU: A Summary
I will provide context for each individual drawing, but here's a summary of the AU beneath the cut. I've made it as brief as possible, but it is long please read it I spent hours on it. It's also BillFord stuff, I know this is primarily a FiddAuthor blog.
TW for religious trauma, child abuse/neglect, and drug use/addiction.
Part I: Bill's Backstory
William Cipher was born in the year 1951 in middle of nowhere Oregon. Shortly after entering kindergarten in 1957, Bill received an autism diagnosis (or what was autism in the 50s) and his mother was distraught, especially so because the local pastor told her the autism was caused by a demon possessing him.
Bill's mother quickly pulled him out of kindergarten to "home school" him and broke his leg to keep him from leaving the house. Bill would spend the majority of the next 7 years alone in the attic, reading old books left from the house's previous owners, favoring the thick and dusty math textbooks over the rest. Any time he got to leave the attic, he would collect things - anything to call his, random objects like bottle caps, spare change, pieces of thread, rocks - a habit that would later develop into kleptomania.
Bill grew extremely malnourished with a leg that never healed right. His father rarely interacted with him, but his mother made sure that Bill understood he was corrupted and needed to heal the only way anyone could - through Catholicism. Of course, as time passed, Bill didn't get "better" so his mother got angrier and angrier while Bill's anxiety got worse and worse, his religious rituals developing into crippling OCD. Triangles and the number three in particular became something of a holy symbol of the trinity to him. Arranging objects into threes, drawing triangles on himself and his possessions, counting by threes during panic attacks...
One day, Bill lashed out after his mother discovered the items he'd pilfered from downstairs and tried to take them away along with his precious books. As punishment, his mother splashed acid on his face, an injury that blinded his left eye. In his anger, out of pure impulse, Bill started a fire, fully intending to burn the house down with his parents inside. But while he waited outside, hearing their dying screams, 14 year old Bill realized too late that he regretted it. The police and firemen discovered him nearly catatonic outside the smoking building.
Part II: Backupsmore
After being passed around the foster system, Bill finally graduated high school. Grade school had not nearly been the utopia Bill was hoping it would be, but he still had a little bit of hope left that college would be a bit better. Though he didn't remember much from his childhood, his memories teaching math to an old teddy bear inspired him to declare a major in mathematics education.
Although Bill initially regarded his roommate warily, it didn't take long for him to find common grounds with Stanford Pines. The two bonded over being labeled freaks as children and found comfort in the strange new experience of being understood and seen. Eventually, after battling some internalized homophobia, the two started a secret romance
Unfortunately, all good things come to an end. Summer separated the two lovers and in the terror of being alone, Bill turned to hard drugs to cope. Although he was happy to see Ford again their sophomore year, hiding his budding addiction became a constant anxiety. And to add to his paranoia, Ford made a new friend out of Fiddleford Hadron McGucket. Bill despised the skinny blonde southerner immediately, terrified that Ford would replace him. After months of tension and open hatred between the two, Bill's homicidal impulses reared their ugly head again and he broke Fiddleford's arm. He would have done more, but Ford was able to separate the two. Naturally upset, Ford initiated a roommate swap as soon as he was able.
Part III: Gravity Falls
Bill graduated college out of pure spite and moved back to Oregon since it was familiar. Bill's students there had very mixed opinions of him. Sure, he was a little creepy and his dark humor wasn't for everyone and everyone had a different story to explain his limp and his eye patch, but one thing was undeniable: if you wanted to learn complicated mathematics, he was the best teacher you could hope for. Students from several small Oregon towns took his class for college credit.
After four years however, Bill's teaching career would come to a screeching halt when an accidental meth overdose landed him in the hospital. Unable to find any family or valid emergency contacts, Ford was contacted. Though it was not his initial plan upon being summoned without warning, pity and the softening of memory over time drove Ford to pay Bill's bail for drug possession and take him in with the hopes of keeping him clean.
It only takes a week for Ford and Bill to fall back into their old romantic patterns which come with mixed feelings; Bill is terrified of being abandoned again and Ford is worried about being let down again. Things go quite well for them for about a month or so - and Ford buys a cat for Bill which he names Pythagorus - until a familiar face fresh off of divorce proceedings arrives in Gravity Falls.
After Ford broke up with Bill in college, he and Fiddleford had a brief fling before Ford admitted he was just trying to get over Bill. Fiddleford arrives with the hope of getting back together with Ford, but is horrified to find Ford right back in Bill's "evil clutches." Fidds gets more and more unhinged as his memory gun usage ramps up and Ford tries to keep things civil between the two men.

I like the *idea* of Teen Lantern, but Thai Pham was a much much MUCH better Teen Lantern
oh totally, but tai also had the advantage of an entire 100 page issue to himself. lots of space to explore his character, his life, his friends, family, etc. ya girl keli did not get that luxury.
honestly, i think archetypes and character tropes are kind of an advantage when it comes to an ensemble cast, at least at the beginning of a story. i know that it’s sort of frowned upon to have stereotypical character types in a story, but when you have a larger cast, the shorthand is pretty useful. (im not talking about stereotypes based in racism or bigotry, that shit should definitely be frowned upon. im talking shit like “bookworm”, “jaded veteran”, “eccentric wealthy person”, “tough guy”, etc.) it gives the audience a solid foundation to view the character from. it’s a starting point. when you have a lot of differing and contrasty character types you can get a lot of good stuff happening, from dynamic dialogue and creative fight scenes and clashing motivations.
the real best part though is the subversion. stories and characters can’t be deconstructed without being solidly constructed in the first place.
it’s the difference between an annoying comedic relief character and a relatable fan-favorite. the annoying one is there for pure comedy with nothing underneath. sometimes the subversion comes from a quiet moment with an otherwise boisterous character - there’s a side to them that the audience has never seen before, something relatable and human. (think bart from the yj tv show: presented as a hyperactive ditzy speedster before revealing a more somber side molded by the apocalypse. tragic yet hilarious characters like ice king from adventure time or old man mcgucket from gravity falls.) and sometimes the nuance can be purely performance based, (jaskier from the witcher is a good example. he was pretty explicitly a pure comedic figure but the actor and editors managed to make him relatable and sympathetic as well)
its why theres so many gd gruff dads. the mandalorian, geralt of rivia, john silver from treasure planet, joel from the last of us. they seem like a jaded tough guy archetype, but deep down they’re a teddy bear who loves their kids. batman is currently not on this list, because idk what the fuck is happening with him rn, but i would like him to be. gruff dad batman is best batman.
we love characters that play with expectations, but u gotta establish what’s expected first. a good example is the show community. all the characters are very very different people when comparing the first episode to the later ones, because they started as tropes and grew into people. yknow, breakfast club style.
anyway this is a long way to get to my point that... tbh i think they should’ve gone more tropey with the current yj issues. at least in the beginning. establishing very different and dynamic character types to create an interesting team vibe. then ease on into the nuanced and complex people they each are on the inside, deepening interest and connection with the audience. instead they’re all pretty complex and nuanced from the word jump, which muddies the waters a little bit. i don’t know where the starting point is. they’re subverting expectations i never had in the first place.
with keli it’s a little like overdeveloping your character backstory for dungeons and dragons. the coolest and most interesting part of a character’s story being completely behind them is kind of underwhelming. the focus should be on the story being told Right Now. i love her concept, but the delivery leaves a little to be desired.

Southern Lullaby
FiddleMarch Week 4: Family (UNEDITED)
Fiddleford has sung the same lullaby to his son since the day he was born and Tate hung onto it like a life line.
The song is more then what is said in the lyrics. It is a song about a father's love for his son and a bond that was never truly broken Ao3    SONG
“When the honeysuckle’s climbing ‘round the door, And the music is a soft and low. And the twilight skies Are gleaming with the colors that are streaming, It’s like what you see in dreaming. That’s for sure.”
The soft sound of banjo music replaced the singing and filled the quiet house. The melody coming from an open nursery door where a man sat on a rocking chair with a banjo in his lap. In front of him was a small crib where a baby was laying. The child did not seem to care about the lullaby as much as the mobile above him.
The stars swayed to an invisible beat of their own and it entertained the small baby. He kicked his little legs and reached up to them. The music seeming to make the experience of his dancing stars more captivating. The man just rocked in the chair and continued the small song in an attempt to get the child to sleep.
“Don’t you hear the bees a humming And the sound of banjo strumming?
Honey, close your sleepy eyes And gently, softly toddle off to sleep.”
Fiddleford stroked the banjo strings gently and smiled at the toddler that was curled up in his bed so he could face his father. The boy hugged the teddy bear in his arms tightly and seemed to hold onto every word that his father sung. The same old lullaby since he was a baby.
The toddler’s eyes started to slowly drift down as the soft strumming of the familiar instrument seemed to rock him to sleep. His father’s voice seemed to act like a second blanket that made him feel secure and happy. Tate rubbed his face and snuggled down further into the star patterned sheets as his dad started the next line.
“And a thousand angel voices are in tune. When they come out and rejoices by the moon.
When we pass the pearly gateway, Betcha we won’t notice straight ‘way How as Heaven ain’t a great way off from June.”
The eight-year-old in the bed seemed to be asleep and Fiddleford slowly stopped playing the instrument in his lap. He let the banjo rest as he watched the boy’s chest rise in fall slowly as he hung onto the little teddy bear loosely. His heart hurt with how much he was going to miss his son but Ford needed his help and with how things already were at home this was probably for the best. A little break would not hurt anyone.
With a soft smile, the man stood up and moved to leave the room quietly.
“Dad?” A sleepy voice called out and stopped Fidds in his tracks.
Fiddleford looked over his shoulder at his son.
“Yes, Tate?” He whispered and made his way back over to the bed, “Ya’ need something, sugar cube?”
The boy rubbed his sleepy eyes and looked over at his father.
“You’ll be back soon, won’ ya?” Tate whispered.
“Of course, I will,” Fiddleford smiled and took his son’s hand, “I just gotta help my friend out with somethin’ and then I will be back before ya’ know it. You won’ even know I was gone.”
Tate gave a small smile but did not seem convinced. “When will you be back?” He asked quietly.
“If all goes according to plan I will be back next June,” Fidds said with a small smile, “But I will call you every day.”
“Promise?”
Fiddleford leaned over and kissed Tate’s head, “I promise. Now you get to sleep. Ya got school in the mornin’.”
The man moved to leave the room but a tug on his sleeve kept him in place.
“Can…can you finish the song?”
Fiddleford smiled softly and moved back into the chair he had occupied a moment ago. He settled the banjo back into his lap and plucked a few strings.
“Anything for you, Tater-tot.”
Tate smiled at the nickname and snuggled back down into the blankets as his father started to pluck the strings to the banjo. The soothing and familiar tone of the instrument lulling him slowly to sleep.
“Don’t you hear the bees a humming And the sound of banjo strumming?
Honey close your sleepy eyes And gently, softly toddle off to sleep.”
Tate stopped his footsteps as he walked around the new McGucket manor when he heard a familiar song from one of the rooms he had just passed. The man backed up slowly and looked into the room with interest. Even after so many years of the tune being lost to time he could recognize it instantly.
The man stared at the man that was plucking away at the strings in front of the fire. His father seemed to get younger as he sang the last few lines of the song. Tate suddenly felt like he was eight again and was about ready to get ready for bed so his dad could sing him to sleep.
Fiddleford let the last note die out on his own and stared ahead at the crackling flames. The old man did not even seem to know that his son stood in the doorway and watched him.
“Used to play that for ya’ every night,” Fidds said softly as he let his fingers brush over the strings, “Ever since ya were born. Put you right to sleep when I started to sing.”
Tate slowly moved into the room and took the other chair silently.
“Never got to that stage of life where ya’ would have fought me out of yer room to make me stop,” Fidds said sadly, “Or give ya’ the chance to have kids so you could sing it to ‘em.”
Fiddleford stopped his fingers and let the soft strum of the notes die.
“I’m sorry, Tate. I didn’ just ruin yer life; I ruined yours too.” Fiddleford said that words sadly and hugged the banjo close to him.
Tate frowned at his father and looked into the flames in front of the two of them. He had never been that good at words.
“That doesn’t matter, Dad. What matters is you are getting better and you shouldn’t be sorry for my bitterness over what had happened to you. I should have tried to help you but,” Tate took a breath, “I didn’t. I just pretended I did not know you.”
“Oh, sugar cube,” Fiddleford set the banjo down and put his hand on Tate’s shoulder, “That don’t mean nothing. I wouldn’t have tried to help me neither seeing how far gone I got. Heck, the fact that ya’ did stick around town and didn’ split is enough fer me to be grateful about.”
Tate looked over at his father and almost crumbled when he saw the man had just the same amount of love and affection in his eyes as when Tate was a child. Even after messing up, his father still loved him above everything in the world.
“I love ya’, Tate,” Fiddleford said as he tipped the hat up some.
“I love you too, Dad.”
