i hope this hasn't been asked before. what size do you make your canvas? and do you crop it to fit other socials (like Instagram for example)? i hear that 300 dpi is standard. i never know if it's good to make my canvas big or not.

hi i think this ask is like at least 4 months old but i was scanning my sketchbooks from last year and i abruptly remembered i had gotten this ask because i had made a little chart in my sketchbook trying to figure out how to answer it

anyways theres pros and cons. and the size of your canvas is really going to depend on personal needs + preference. how good ur computer is, how complicated ur art style, how comfortable drawing feels, how much disk space you have to spare, what youre gonna end up using the art for in the end...300dpi is standard for PRINTING specifically, if you only plan to ever post things online then 72dpi works great and will save you space (fun fact a lot of professional animation files i deal with are 72dpi. and those eventually go on your tv screen). but personally i make everything i draw 300dpi because i am always printing stuff for cons, zines, etc and its nice to have the option even if i dont end up printing.

when I was a teen I used to draw on a rly shitty laptop and i made everything 800x800px 300dpi because big canvases would cause a lot of lag and also the resolution on this laptop was pretty small so 800px was a lot of the screen already. now i have a slightly better laptop with a bigger resolution and i sketch on giant 10000px-40000px canvases with the hard round brush and no shape dynamics or transfer whatsoever to minimize lag. when it comes to making a final illustration when i know ill be using a bunch of layer effects/blending modes/colors/mixing brushes etc etc ill generally crop the canvas down to the 6000px range. most illustrations i try to make sure are comfortably printable on tabloid size paper so thats pretty much anything hovering around or above 3000x5000px w 300dpi (so 11x17in). HOPE THIS HELPS?

EDIT: OH ALSO re: socials. i always ALWAYS size down my art to post on the internet. i think its crazy when other artists dont. because why would i ever let the internet have my hi-res file for free. also in general i think it looks better if you do the resizing yourself because if you don't then many social media sites will compress your file for you! a lot of people will post a hi-res file to twitter and then go "Wow twitter killed the quality of this img!!!" UH YEAH because they have an automatic image compressor. because they need to save space too lol and they dont want your image to take 248263895 years to load. same with instagram and to a lesser extent tumblr. when i post anything on social media i resize it down to 1200px-1600px on the longest side... its a little arbitrary but im kind of basing it on the smallest resolution of widely available screens. mostly because i think it looks stupid when u open up an image file fullsize and u have to scroll to see the whole thing... also iirc instagram only takes images up to 1080px before it resizes them? granted if you upload something smaller than that itll also resize it up which will look worse so I think bumping the numbers just over 1080px is pretty safe.

I should really be bringing the dpi down to 72 too when i post online but often im too lazy to do that. but it will technically help ur image load faster and stuff. and make it less likely for people to yoink it off the web and print it themselves.

the development of their relationship is like... at first they HATED each other, they found each other so ANNOYING and INSUFFERABLE, naturally... until a little problem in the form of a 13 year old child showed up at the dojo. apparently this kid was enough of a mutual threat to get the two of them to tolerate each other enough to reluctantly team up... also can i say they r literally like cartoon antagonists to me? they are SO funny and dumb i am SO obsessed... anyways! after the whole main plot of the isle of armor is over, they still kinda almost, try 2 awkwardly ignore each other? tsunderes... they cant admit theyre growing fond of each other xP and after a while, that strategy just doesnt work out :p they continue 2 train at the dojo, and this soon leads 2 them becoming friends! this part is integral 2 me 4 the development of their relationship, they become total besties, they r such galpals........

after some indeterminate amount of time after becoming friends, avery finally falls for her. i headcanon klara was always attracted to him, even when she hated him, lol. they were like two freaks who were perfect partners in crime. they get really close and affectionate, even platonically ❤ ... u can tell how crazy i am over enemies to friends to lovers for them xP

so with ALL THAT in mind.... i think klara would ask first? technically? i mean klara would b the kind of person 2 want someone 2 confess their undying love 4 her, but avery was kindaa weird. i dont think they would have EVER asked her directly tbh.... they were soo confused abt their feelings hehe, abt her but also abt dating in general. klara kinda knew abt the latter, considering avery would have opened up 2 her abt it in my brainspace. i guess knowing this she would just shoot her shot & suggest that they could date! avery is so nervous.... he panics and says he needs time 2 think on it, and when he finally recomposes himself hes all like, Ahem, Klara, I Would Like To Formally Accept Your Ever So Gracious Invitation.. hehehe.... he was so funny.

UM so they try dating!! and i dont rly care if it isnt realistic or believable or whatever at all i just like cute indulgent things.

hmm.. honestly i really like the idea of their first kiss being kinda like, lowkey. juxtaposed to the kind of people they are. one might expect some kind of grandiose fairytale type situation... when in fact they were just chillin alone somewhere on the island, and she asked 2 kiss them... and they agreed! it left avery asking themself, what am i doing? how did i get here?? everything had been so different. this definitely wasnt what they would have imagined for themself... but they loved it. averys life was changing in unexpected ways. i guess this was first-love making him a little cuckoo in the head, huh? maybe this event had been a bit grandiose, in its own way.

WOW this post really devolved into me writing fanfiction about how kissing klara caused existential revelations within avery. nice! ok!

anyways!!! we r almost at the end! so!! avery was so touch starved, omg. he wouldnt let just anyone touch him, tho, of course. but if he liked you, well... earlier i said i believed they were pretty close b4 they dated, so if klara were to grab their hand, they wouldnt object, hehe~ (shes the one w the cold hands btw, and a firm grip, too..). things abt avery & physical touch interest me so much honestly, it is so intriguing when a character who could use psychic powers 4 everything would decide not to... especially when it comes 2 affection....

immortal guy im already doing a reread. successfully convinced another person to read with the phill "i will marry your mom so we can bcome father and son" screenshot shit bc hes insane and needs to be put down. the moment phill looked at the aquarium at the party during the showdown chapter i knew what wuz gonna happen and i was screaming dont do it at the phone and they meet eyes anyway like in romeo+juliet 1996 which phill guesses previously. im sick. they think theyre subtle.

im pleasantly surprised at how gentle and warm moments there are in the story given the initial intro. moments between chloe & juna, hira & matilda, karl & asha rovoi & chloe ekin & myeol and ofc phill and myeol, despite the pace of the plot it feels very character driven. and also phill phrases everything in the most insane way possible but his internal monologues about myeol are all just "i need to do nice things for him so he will want to stay with me because i am comforted by his company" when u strip away his evil face. guy seriously makes 937203 plans and manipulations just so he could be friends with myeol. alright. I think the balance between myeol and phill's relationship is masterful like despite all of phill's behavior and how he technically holds all the power myeol is aware of it and uses it to manipulate him right back and this push and pull makes them feel like theyre on an even playing field which prevents it from feeling gross and it becomes hilarious instead. its a good read. the specific thing u drew that made me read it were the portraits of the characters specifically the portrait of banachet with the rest of the troubleshooters bc he was just that beautiful. thanks

dude idek how to respond to this bc these are my thoughts 100% exactly and explains everything i love about this comic!!!!!!! yes their dynamic is one of my favorite things i kinda describe it like the best parts about queerbaiting but without the queerbaiting LOL bc it has all the insane subtleties and implications and the tension of not being together but there's 500 lesbians in the story and myeol is bi and phill flirts with guys so you know its all in good faith lol.

the power dynamic IS so funny bc it looks sooo bad to anyone who doesnt know them (like when everyone was side eyeing phill during the trigger dgkljf) but all the insane shit on either side cancels out 😭😭 & i even cant picture them with anyone else like theyre both super lonely and won't let anyone else in in their life and even tho myeol is more sympathetic to immortals he cannot even give a shit enough abt them to remember their faces or remember anyone trying to be friends with him ohh i just love them :)

hmmm honestly im very easy to please w gifts, i dont know which medium youll be using but for art it can rly be anything- i typically rly like Cozy Mundane settings like. drinking a cup of coffee or wearing a big scarf outside when its snowy, things like that! there arent rly any things i dislike in those kinda scenarios so u have a lot of free room and i guarantee u ill love it. in case u write fics then i just, really really like introspection and having someone else there that notices it and offers comfort or another perspective, etc. like, kaito and shinichi both have So Much on their plate, they should maybe have someone to talk to, shinichi at least has ai even if shes more roundabout in showing she cares, and kaito has no one lol. tho ive recently been REALLY into the idea of keiko figuring out his other identity and always covering for him when ppl invite him out somewhere when hes working on or at a heist. imagine... kaito finally getting to talk abt everything to Someone.. im on that kaikei friendship agenda. i Know they said that both aoko And keiko have known him since they were kids, id like some interaction to showcase it !!

im sorry if this is a silly question but what is the difference between alpha and mm technically speaking? i know alpha looks realistic but is it just the textures? because i usually find the shape of mm more appealing too but i've seen alpha stuff with kinda a mm look and vice versa so i got confused. if i wanted to turn an alpha object into mm would i only have to replace the textures or is there more involved? and if i wanted to create mm objects, i'd need to get assets from the game or is there a place where people already posted it for the public? for example textures and patterns lmao omg sorry but textures is rly the thing i love the most about mm. anyway thank u and sorry

not a silly question at all! i dont think there is one defined definition of the difference between mm and alpha. but i personally think mm style is similar to what you described.

i think there are 4 aspects that make an something mm:

1) texture

for texture, it is more cartoony and not super realistic textures. especially for things like wood and fabric. peacemaker has some seamless, wood textures you can download. but also a great place to look for seamless MM textures are EA floor tiles! so you can export the floor tile textures and use them on your cc.

one detail that especially makes something look more MM is edge highlighting. its something i didnt really notice at first and a lot of my early items dont have, but it really gives it the MM touch and also makes textures not look so 'flat'. another detail with texturing to make it MM is adding a pretty strong 'ambient occlusion' which is essentially shadowing. so there is little to no shadowing at the top, and then strong shadowing as you get closer to the floor.

2) sizing

in general MM items are larger than what you would typically think. i think sometimes EA makes things TOO big (coffee tables and end tables especially), but in general the overall sizing tends to be exaggerated. alpha items tend to be smaller and more realistic to a real life size.

3) proportions

proportioning is different than sizing, because this is specifally focused on smaller features. things like handles, tassles on blankets, thickness of cords/cables on hanging objects, etc. are much thicker and chunkier than what we would normally see in real life.

4) drop shadows

mm stuff tends to have pretty strong drop shadows. this again was something my very early stuff doesnt have. i used to delete them entirely actually, which maybe one day i will go back and fix lol! but having a strong drop shadow is another small detail that helps give an mm feel.

one small note, some world items dont have drop shadows and some of the things i mentioned here dont really apply to world items. but in general, these are the things i think make up a mm-style object! i hope that helps and if you need more assistance/tips when you start your project please come join my discord server! i have a channel where cc artists/creators can ask for help :)
