but i like to receive the upholstery images in my head : (
make up your own upholstery images. I believe in you
#there's something interesting to be teazed out here of course about the presumed purposes of writing and reading#to create an experience versus to communicate some idea with use of craft#and how these ideas align with ideas of genre; and genre fiction 'versus' literary fiction#however as someone with no mind's eye I just simply care so little about what someone is wearing &c.

[Image Description: Tassum Teaz, an anthropomorphic hyena. They have lavender fur with violet spots, short pink and purple hair that covers their eyes, golden piercings, and a purple and green striped tail. They are wearing a violet and gold collar, a yellow coat with a lilac plaid pattern, a black tank top with some white lettering visible (specifically the "S" and part of a "k"), black lounge pants, beige legwarmers with white cloud-shaped patterning, and violet shoes with lilac soles. They are waving to some unseen person and smiling. They are standing in a spacious sewer near a set of metal ladder rungs on a brick wall, a green sign labeled "Street" and pointing upward mounted beside the ladder. End ID.]

This is a very aimless ramble but. I am very middle of the road on the idea that Kaz could... Uhh, Retire, from the Barrel life. I'm not saying that he can't heal or whatever, (bc he can, will, and should, however long it takes), but I feel like removing him from Ketterdam specifically is like taking a frog from somewhere damp. He'll fucking die, put him back..... Like, I quite like a good few of the fics where like he dramatically fakes his death or has a whole second life running, or they go to Lij, or whatever, but I have to suspend my disbelief sometimes. There's a whole point about futurity here that I'm too tired to teaze out but... well, think of how many times Kaz says in CK that Ketterdam is 'his' city, and how he outright refuses to go to Ravka with them; and even after they've run out Pekka, which you might assume was what was keeping him there, he seems to just intend on experimentally creating and destroying, and making himself useful to and deserving of Inej. His future plans amount to 'fuck shit up' which maybe comes across as directionless, but also... Kaz likes stealing paintings and interfering with merch business and gathering blackmail. He didn't steal Van Eck's De Kappel because it would help him get revenge for Jordie, he stole it just to prove he could, and he seemed to find it rather funny to play dumb when Van Eck mentioned it. He has a lot of pride in the Dregs, as well, and I don't think he'd like to leave them in someone else's hands; he literally calls the Slat 'my house' when he orders Per Haskell out. So even though the removal of the revenge motivation might make him struggle for a while, I also find it hard to see him necessarily embarking on... a conventional and/or respectable life lmao. The dream he has during the firepox where he's looking through the farmhouse window at himself and Jordie, who won't let him in, says to me that he can never quite go back to who he was. Unconventional and disreputable... maybe more likely. (You know that SNL skit that's like. "My dad got me a pink gun. So there's a lot there." Yeah I can't help but think it would be like that 😭). But you're not getting him permanently out of Ketterdam, ever, imo. Retreating maybe a bit, actually leaving the Barrel life... Hm

Actually there’s probably something interesting to teaze out here about how these people seem to be using arguments that a process is unethical indiscriminately intermixed with arguments that it is not art, or using arguments that a process is not ethical as arguments that it is not art.
The first analogue that comes to mind is writing—writing is often cast outside the pale of ‘real’ ‘literature’ because it offends morally (“smut,” “drek,” &c.). A moral judgement must be an aesthetic judgement because (to the post-Victorian mind) all of our aesthetic judgements must be based on “morality.”
The second analogue that comes to mind is comedy—people often use "that isn't funny" (a ludic or aesthetic judgement) as a way of saying "that's offensive" (a moral judgement).

Northanger Abbey Readthrough, Ch 5
Mr. Tilney is still missing! He is not to be found at the theatre, the pump room, or out of doors. However, according to the narrator, this absence is very clever of him:
This sort of mysteriousness, which is always so becoming in a hero, threw a fresh grace in Catherine’s imagination around his person and manners, and increased her anxiety to know more of him.
Also, poor Isbella keeps dropping hints about James, She liked him the better for being a clergyman, “for she must confess herself very partial to the profession”; and something like a sigh escaped her as she said it but Catherine has no idea what she is hinting at! The fact that Isabella wants "delicate raillery" reminds me of Anne Steele from Sense & Sensibility:
Miss Steele wanted only to be teazed about Dr. Davies to be perfectly happy. (Ch 34)
Mrs. Allen is highly gratified to find friends that are shabbier than her in dress! But she and Mrs. Thorpe hardly ever actually talk to each other, in what they called conversation, but in which there was scarcely ever any exchange of opinion, and not often any resemblance of subject, for Mrs. Thorpe talked chiefly of her children, and Mrs. Allen of her gowns. If you want an example of Austen actually writing one of these conversations down, check out the "bragversaion" between Mrs. Elton and Mr. Weston, where he only really talks of Frank and she brings literally every statement back to Maple Grove. (Emma, Ch 18, V2)
Catherine and Isabella rapidly become friends, perhaps a bit too rapidly. Their quick friendship will be contrasted later with the more properly and far slower intimacy between Catherine and Eleanor Tilney. However, I have definitely had vacation friendships like this, where due to the amount of time together and the knowledge that you will soon go home, the friendship moves very fast.
They called each other by their Christian name, were always arm in arm when they walked, pinned up each other’s train for the dance, and were not to be divided in the set; and if a rainy morning deprived them of other enjoyments, they were still resolute in meeting in defiance of wet and dirt, and shut themselves up, to read novels together.
And then we come to the famous rant against the degradation of novels! And you know what? Austen has a good point. Why not have heroines of freaking novels read novels? What a strange brand of doublethink! A heroine must not read novels whilst existing within them. Funny to think that many of the novels that Catherine might have been reading would be considered classic literature now, though many more have faded out of recognition.
Austen also rightly points out that people are far more likely to actually read novels than "edifying" materials such as poetry or history, something which will come up later on the country walk. This makes me think of the scorn towards YA novels and comic books/novels today, which I still see way too much of. Let kids read what they like! A general love of reading will get anyone far in life.
(To be honest, I still kind of prefer fantasy YA because way too much of the adult stuff features rape/non-con/sexual assault and that's far less likely in YA)
But yeah, you just tell me the last time someone came up to you gushing about a History of England, it's not those books that capture our imagination and make us feel, it's novels. There is a reason I'm still reading novels from 200 years ago today and little else, and it's not just because factual information is far out of date!
Only a novel indeed!

HELLOOOO I need more Faith lore. For how lobg was she walking around in the hibernation suit and what was her first non-hibernation suit outfit? What did she order from cantina?
@hibernationsuit 🖤✨
Honestly, Faith wanted out of her hibernation suit as soon as possible. She was hardly making tracks through the Vale before ripping that thing off. Narratively, it makes sense to me if she got her hands on new clothes in Edgewater.
I have a few different outfits I usually like putting her in! But her very first once she's out of the hibernation suit?
Ports of Call: Water Resistant Wear, Casual
"A black vest over-top a red shirt with dark brown gloves, charcoal pants and black boots."
WELL, with my game pulled open here, if we're going strictly off of what you can buy from Amelia, her go-to order at Cantina would be Trip-Teaz or Plain 'n Pure Water. Since, ya'know, she'd only be selling Spacer's Choice beverages at the bar. But you and I both know she's secretly fond of keeping Amelia company more than the drinks.
For a little bonus, her actual booze order would be Rum and Somethin' (Rizzo product), but she isn't opposed to Iceberg Aged Whiskey (Glacial Age product). Realistically, when alone, Faith only drinks very little. For personal reasons, she takes having self-control over her alcohol consumption very seriously. Which is a battle she loses during Death Wish Arc, and why afterwards she tends to only drink if Max is there to be her accountabilibuddy, because she feels like she can't trust herself after breaking when she tried for so long to not fall into that place. Also why Max takes any booze out of her quarters and keeps it in his own stash to remove the temptation, after a long conversation with her about how the thirst for it gets to her.
